Today I purchased this very Brazilian Raintree in a auction at our holiday party. It was donated by Mr. Paul Pikel and the money went to the Central Florida Bonsai Society. This video doesn't do it justice and it's great to see where this tree came from before I became it's new owner. I look forward to the future of this great tropical and can't wait to begin working on it. I will probably get some advice from Paul in the future since he has expierence working with this type of tree.
Great video. I wish you still made them, it would be nice to have a florida teacher to learn how to go through the challenges we face down here. Hope you are still enjoying trees 😊
Thanks very much. I’m still active and still displaying trees. Florida is actually very fortunate for our long growing season and variety of plant material. If you haven’t already, be sure to search for a local club, Bonsai Societies of Florida has clubs throughout the state. Also the convention is May 24-26 this year in Orlando
Hiya Paul, ive only been performing the art of bonsai for a few years seriously, but always loved them, out of all the youtube channels, forums, etc, for research, you are by far the best channel that I always go to, if i'm stuck on something, more often then not, you have a video explaining it in perfect detail, in depth, giving me confidence to proceed in a certain technique. I picked up some 'old' maples from a local remote nursery, and will be applying your air layer technique to them. Thank you so much for your video's, and please, keep up the good work, always look forward to new ones... cheers from Australia ;)
Being new to loving bonsais and wanting to venture into this new world of creativity, I can't thank you enough for the videos I have viewed so far and the ones to come. Great information and illustrations!!!
Your Property Matters, LLC Realty Associates I'm so glad the videos are helpful for you. I want to make a lot more but I can't always find the time. I update my instagram account pretty often so you can see the updates at instagram.com/OrlandoBonsaiTV
awesome videos i just started bonsai about 2months ago im building up my collection pretty fast, these videos are some of the best ones i have found online, they answered so many questions, thanks for posting these keep up the good work.
Imagine being able to Grow and look after amazing looking Bonsai trees. Imagine how good they would look in your home. Imagine how good you would feel.. Wouldn't that be great?
Thanks for your great info. Just bought 2 overgrown starter Brazilian raintrees and fortunatly I watched your video before I worked on my trees. Glad I didnt cut off the lowest branch so that branch can help out the trunk foundation! Please do additional videos on the Brazilian rain tree.
Really wish you still did videos! I get it though. Not complaining. Just saying, you were really good at it. I saw you at the BFS Convention last week and was happy to see you were still in Bonsai. I thought maybe you left the hobby since it’s been so long since a video! Regardless, thank you for the content you did make. Hope to see more in the future of course. But either way, thanks.
Thank you so much and man I really appreciate this message. I saw and met some really great people at the convention that got me really excited about bonsai again.
Walt I'm so glad you are the new owner of this tree! It has so much potential and I know you will learn a lot from it. The best part is that I'll still get to see it from time to time while you develop it, and even show it one day!
Absolutely. If the trunk isn't as big as you want you need to put it in a bigger pot or back into the ground. When its ready put it back into the bonsai pot
Congrats on the baby, first of all. As for the sacrafice branch on the BRT I find that the branch actually pulls the tree to the direction of the branch so yes it continues to affect the tree and a very good way.
That is an excellent question. It is true that the trunk will not continue to thicken once the tree is put into a bonsai pot. In areas where branches meet the trunk the trunk will continue to swell in that area much like reverse taper in a tree when you have multiple branches in that same area. However you will not get the uniform overall growth of the trunk to continue in size once put into a bonsai pot the sacrifice branch only works on that specific area. I hope this answers your question
I'm interested in this too. I see a lot of trees with really long thick trunks several feet tall with no branches until the top. If air layered just under the bottom branches, they would make wonderful, thick trunked bonsai. I just don't want to kill a perfectly nice tree just to find out if it can be air layered. I would love to try this though.
paul, after a month or so; my air layering with the fire tree which i told you seems working! :) i can see some strands of roots peeking out through the plastic covering i made. i opted the plastic over the tin foil btw cause using the latter makes my rooting media(tried an ordinary nursery soil which i collected from another pot that we have here at home ;) ) dried much faster, we have much higher ambient temps here maybe that's why. your tutorials really helps! :)
i've seen a tamarind bonsai once by that exhibit, an awesome nice little tree it was! i'm trying to learn how to make/train my first bonsais atm. i have this fire tree(Morella faya) which i grown from seedling a year ago. it's starting to develop my first three primary branches so far. did the air layering thing yesterday cause i'm thinking of reducing it's future trunk's lengthcause it's way too tall to my liking and i hope i wont fail with it somehow ;P
Great vid. Right now my biggest issue is finding material. I visit the local nurseries as often as I can and there are many great looking shrubs and trees...I am just not sure what makes good bonsai and what should be avoided.
I'm really glad to hear that. I know I talk fast, but I'm trying to tell all I know to help everyone get past the starting confusion and get into the fun part of bonsai
Great video. I have a BRT that has dropped all of its leaves twice this year. The second time it dropped all of the leaves, no new growth came back, and that was 6 months ago. The tree is most definitely still alive, I just can't get leaves to grow for the life of me. Any suggestions?
Hi, very helpful video. I was wondering if you can make a video dedicated to Bonsai soil and fertilizer only? Also it would be very helpful to show the alternatives of some material. Thanks🙏🏽
The channel Appalachian Bonsai has a great series of videos called "Bonsai Soil Tests". It provides a lot of valuable information regarding various types of soil.
Yes youcan pretty much air layer any tree. Decidous trees do well and are pretty quick. Maples are good to do and they will generate roots with lenty of time in the gorwing season
I recently inherited a Brazilian Rain tree from my best friend who passed away. It is very in need of being cut back I think. He passed in Jan and hasn't touched the tree since that month. So I don't know when he re-potted or if he had it's all a guessing game. I've been researching and learning as fast as I can. I have also a maple and another tree I have yet to identify. Any help would be great. I really want to take care of these as much as he did.d Thank you so much :)
Somethings you say about truck thickness conflict with each other. At one point Ive heard you say once the tree is out of the nursery mix your truck is gonna be as wide as its gonna be. Then you say, once in bonsai mix, you leave a sacrifice branch to thicken the trunk. Can you clarify? Thanks, good vids.
If i wanted to thicken the trunk on my raintree should i still trim back the roots or just repot in a slightly bigger pot without touching the roots? Great videos they really help alot. Thanks
Yes it will but it will take some time to rr grow the thick roots that thicken the truck. So if you decide on putting back into nursery mix expect to wait a couple years at least
Hi there! Beautiful trees!!! I have a question regarding the “nursery soil” you refer to. What is it made up of?? I appreciate you time!! Thanks In Advance!
Thank you for the video...I've been away from bonzais many years and picked up at 25-30 year old BRT. Ive only had it for six month and learned more in your 10 minute video then I picked up during that time. I am in Atlanta and so far he has been inside on the a southern exposed window and also use a grow light. Recently no matter what I did he lost all his leaves (hes always inside) I freaked out, continued to water and a week ago new buds were coming out everywhere...after one week Im astomished how much foliage is there!!. I water once a week while inside and Im wondering if thats enough...Soon as temps stay over 60 Ill bring him out on the weekends and see how he does...I thought I could post pics but I can not...Thank you again and Ill be watching!
A big limb of my Brazilian rain tree broke .I cut it off, but I've never been successful with propagation from small trimming. Can't it be done with a larger woody limb. Can I do it in water or how
Thanks for the video! not sure where or how I stumbled on bonsai, but your stuff has inspired me to dive in. Looking forward to your beginner instruction. Any books you recommend?
I live in Virginia and was wondering if you have any tips on getting a thick trunk? With my non tropical I can just place in the ground for a few years. My Brazilian raintree is 16in tall with a 1in trunk.
The best way to get it to thicken up is put it into nursery pot (maybe a one gallon size) and just let it grow. Protect it under 45 degrees. Keep it fertilized over the winter because it needs to keep growing during the cold weather. It may take a full year to get it to a good size
I was wondering if you could do a video on the Jack Pine particularly the mini bonsai Jack Pine because that's the tree I'm growing and its my first tree and I am very lost so please help
Hey, This video was great! I just transferred my Brazilian rainforest bonsai tree to a bonsai pot, using cactus potting soil and very small lava rock mixture. I am having the most difficult time finding bonsai pots, I need almost every size imaginable have any good leads? Preferably online stores so I can have them shipped to me.
Hello. I have one for about a year from home depot. It said irs about 7 years old. It was growing mushrooms on the soil so i decided to repot her. Now, she looks a little weak and still sprouts during the day along with losing leaves. Im concerned. Soil seems to be wet and not moist so I put her now outside to dry up the soil a bit. any suggestions?
+prinmiami85 if your soil is wet enough to grow mushrooms you need a better soil mix. Something that drains better otherwise the roots will rot because they are not getting enough air.
Good afternoon. I have some pictures of my Brazilian rain tree that seems to habe some sort of mite looking creatures on her foliage. She still healthy, but it's concerning. Please help.
Hello. ok, so i have a brazilian rain tree that i left outside for over six months and turned out beautiful. However, this miami weather this month has been too high 90 to 100 degrees. Now she seems to be scortched and not blooming. Some leaves are yellow and shriveled. please help.
hopefully you have solved your problem and saved the tree, but I had the same exact issue with mine. people kept telling me "don't water it too much, let it go dry before you water it again" so I took their advice and only watered it maybe once a week. this was back in january so I figured it didn't need a lot of water, but oh man was I wrong. brazilian raintrees are tropical, and require a lot of water and sunlight to thrive. so my advice to you is this: give it water every 3 or 4 days depending on how hot it is and how much sunlight it's getting. I used to come downstairs in the morning to find 10-20 small leaves had fallen off the tree, and others had turned yellow. I started watering it more frequently, and now it's growing like crazy (I have to prune it every week or two) and it hasn't dropped a single leaf in months. my bonsai went from dying to being one of the healthiest trees I've ever seen.
Miss you, miss your trees, miss your knowledge, miss your teaching skills. You and your videos brought such joy to my life
Thank you so much for this comment I really appreciate that. I hope to be able to dedicate more time to it in the future

Huge thumbs up to a beginner series!
10 year old video but still very informative and it also informed me about the jades that I didn’t know
Thank you so much. You are correct, the basics of bonsai are timeless. I’m glad you found it useful

I hope you are looking to own a bonsai if you don't already. It is very rewarding and a beautiful hobby to enjoy

Great Job! How many months air layer to have roots before you repotting? hope you have the video from air layer - cutting - repotting.
Thanks
Yes the styling and pruning would work for those as well
would you say that the brazilian rain tree is similar to a jacaranda when trying to grow as a bonsai?
A big limb of my Brazilian rain tree broke .I cut it off, but I've never been successful with propagation from small trimming. Can't it be done with a larger woody limb. Can I do it in water or how
The only way I know to propagate BRT is through air layer
There are some die back with bouganvillea but not as much as the raintree.
Any tips for propegating this tree?
Thanks for the video! not sure where or how I stumbled on bonsai, but your stuff has inspired me to dive in. Looking forward to your beginner instruction. Any books you recommend?
Pete Johnson not sure how you found me but try it out! It's challenging and fun. Best of luck!!
What do you think about Blue Spruce for Bonsai?
She is already in the new pot and going thru some negative effects. Should I repot her again or just add more lava rocks; a way to not stress here
I have four brazilian rain tree. Non have thorns. I live in the natural inhabitat of this rain tree. It is actually an endangered species in the wild.
What's the soil mix for the pre bonsai before you repotted it?
do you ever defoliant your BRTs?
So we have to dig/cut through all of those roots every time we repot this bonsai?
When are you going to upload more videos and update your website? There isn't many videos on brazilian raintrees.
I live in Virginia and was wondering if you have any tips on getting a thick trunk? With my non tropical I can just place in the ground for a few years. My Brazilian raintree is 16in tall with a 1in trunk.

Ok sounds great, I don't mind the wait. Thanks again and keep up the beautiful work!
I heavy pruned my brt I know it will have dieback but could it kill the whole tree
I was wondering if you could do a video on the Jack Pine particularly the mini bonsai Jack Pine because that's the tree I'm growing and its my first tree and I am very lost so please help
Some trees sprout roots quicker during the air layer process. For the raintree it took only 3-4 months
Hey, This video was great! I just transferred my Brazilian rainforest bonsai tree to a bonsai pot, using cactus potting soil and very small lava rock mixture. When watering it right after the water would not drain out the bottom holes. I am worried that this might cause rotting to the roots. what would you suggest i do?
thanks, zack
If it isn't draining I would cut back on waterings to give the tree time to evaporate some of the water. In the Spring go ahead and repot into a better draining soil mix
I live in Orlando, and I have a large BRT that needs some love. Is it possible to link up for some professional advice??
Shoot me an email at ppikel7@gmail
Hi, My Brazilian Rain Tree, there're some leave turn yellow, is that normal?
Hey Paul. I was wondering about how the tree would develop any thick surface roots being planted in bonsai soil. Will that happen, or is that a sacrifice that must be made? Thanks, and like always, enjoy your videos.
Surface roots are one of the hardest things to develop on bonsai so that's why we pay attention to them most when selecting material. It helps to visually stabilize the tree and helps us selected the front of the tree.
If you put a tree into bonsai soil you're going to have a hard time getting surface roots to develop. However if you plant the tree in a nursery pot with nursery mix for a lengthy period you can get them started and they can improve over time in the bonsai pot. However for substantial surface roots you'll want to have them in place before going to the bonsai pot
I see what you're saying. I've got a crepe myrtle that I plan on lifting this spring. It's short but stout with a natural looking nebari. I think in a few years I may possibly have a nice little shohin
We want more vids!
Yes just get it into a larger pot so it can expand its roots and continue to thicken the trunk
Now that they're busting growth, I've been working on my BRTs. I was told sacrifice branches aren't effective on this species, did you have success on this tree?
Unrelated, we just had our baby, so I haven't been able to make it to CFBC meetings but I hope to make it to Epcot before the display ends. - Nick
do you need holes in the shallow pots?
No update for this one?
I love blue spruce for bonsai, but I can't gwo them in Florida. Its too hot for them
Is there a tutorial on root pruning this same tree with root-knot nematode infestation?
Can you tell us how to multiply the tree
I have to admit I was a little surprised as well.
I'll try!! hang in there!!
do you keep yours dry or more wet? just wondering what your thoughts are? nice tree bye the way!
I am having the most difficult time finding bonsai pots, I need almost every size imaginable have any good leads? Preferably online stores so I can have them shipped to me.
Where did you get the air layer from? where in Orlando?
Do you think a tamarind tree is a bad idea? its only 3 years old
Hello. I have one for about a year from home depot. It said irs about 7 years old. It was growing mushrooms on the soil so i decided to repot her. +prinmiami85 if your soil is wet enough to grow mushrooms you need a better soil mix. Something that drains better otherwise the roots will rot because they are not getting enough air.

water...soak the tree with water
I recently bought a Brizilian raintree and for some reason, the leaves are yellowing and falling off. What did I do wrong??
hopefully you have solved your problem and saved the tree, but I had the same exact issue with mine. people kept telling me "don't water it too much, let it go dry before you water it again" so I took their advice and only watered it maybe once a week. this was back in january so I figured it didn't need a lot of water, but oh man was I wrong.
brazilian raintrees are tropical, and require a lot of water and sunlight to thrive. so my advice to you is this: give it water every 3 or 4 days depending on how hot it is and how much sunlight it's getting.

Maybe. Where are you located and how much would you be willing to pay :)
