Merry Christmas for the whole family and for the community of viewers and followers in this channel. Special Thanks to our host, instructor, mentor and motivator to get ourselves brave enough to face our little or bigger fiberglass projects and get better experiences with our boating hobby or professional business. Thanks a lot for your decication and quality info you gave to us. Thanks Captain Joe. All the best for you and your family.
Watching you roll that glass over the top of the transom is giving me PTSD. I think I that I had to grind mine off 3 times and start over before I got a clean lamination that didn’t lift in the middle. Beautiful work as usual, from San Diego. I’ve turned several commercial charter boat owners with glass over plywood boats to your channel. It’s helping them greatly with maintenance projects..
Yep, that is definitely a tricky part! Glad to hear the channel is helping folks in San Diego. Keep sharing the channel with anyone who needs a little boat repair advice.
I expect I will never undertake a project such as this - and certainly would never be able to approach the incredibly fine workmanship displayed here if ever I did - but I am FASCINATED and amazed and look forward to each of these episodes like a kid awaits Santa at Christmas. That's how good this channel is!
Captain, as usual great video. Also, a welcoming regard to cameraman Ron, thanks for helping the crew, great job. Finally just a heartfelt appreciation for sharing and educating us with your invaluable knowledge, Merry Christmas and best wishes for the Buskens crew !!!! Let's go fishing 🎣
Capt. Joe, as always a great video. You've inspired me to build a nesting dingy for my 1976 Ericson 35. I want to charter a fishing trip with you, because I have a lot of questions. Thank you for sharing
Hi Captain Joe! Looks INCREDIBLE! That is one bombproof transom! When you started I wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but you nailed it! Beautiful work! Thank you for sharing the process with us! Take care and all the best from California!🧡
Thanks so much! I would like to do a Grady restoration someday. I think they are very good boats. I hope the videos help you with your transom replacement.
Watching from Rhode Island. My son and I are going to be replacing the stringers, transom and deck in the spring( boat is a non heated shelter logic) we got out the floor and stringers before the cold weather came in! Love the videos! Very informative and entertaining! Keep them coming!!
Thanks Captain Joe for the spectacular instructional videos. You have given me the cure for my case of "analysis paralysis" 😊 Now I can't wait for the ice and snow to melt in spring so I can tackle my transom replacement job. It's currently -10°C = 14°F here in Finland and I don't have a heated garage, so my project is on hold for awhile . Thanks for keeping me motivated with your videos. You asked what we fish for here, we'll when I go fishing with my son we usually fish fresh water and try to catch Perch, Bass and Northernpike. When we fish the coast, we go for Perch and Salmon. Merry Christmas! 😊
Walleye on Lake Erie is the primary fishing. Thanks again for the very educational video. I've learned so much. Information I could have used when rebuilding several wrecked Corvettes.
Awesome, I have always wanted to catch a walleye! I understand they are very good to eat, and fun to catch. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your experience with the channel!
I have recently came across your channel, and I must say that the amount of information is amazing and I already feel confident in making some repairs to the keel of my bass boat. That being said, if you ever get the opportunity, I’d like to learn more about clear gel coat. My bass boat looks good for an older one, but I think I can feel some of the flake coming through the clear gel coat, which means I can’t wet sand and/or polish it to much really. I’d like to keep it looking nice. Keep up the good videos. Would also like to see some more fishing videos when the season is around!
Thanks Captain Joe! I am learning so much about fiber-glassing from you! You are generous with your knowledge. I have a project in mind. I'll share it here once I've started. In my experience, you should not talk about a project until you've started. Otherwise I'll never do it.
You guys are awesome!!!have watched EVERY one of your vids!!! Possible project thought would be diy dock box. Maybe done without mold. Everyone needs an indestructible box for patio rv dock or even a coffin box for boat
Awesome tutorial capt. Would've being nice to see the floor removal process / guidelines or tips to follow, thanks for your efforts on the series . Hope your son gets well soon and merry xmas to all.
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you are enjoying the series! We will definitely be tackling the floor soon, and I'm sure there will be some good pointers in there for you!
Request: I've been watching all your videos, and have learned so much, including many tricks and hints. I know you've done a few videos comparing the different fiberglass materials and resins, but being a technical guy by nature, I love charts and graphs. So I'm hoping maybe you could "white board" a graph (or two) of the different materials, showing what's compatible and when you typically use it. For example, in this video you mentioned that epoxy resin won't dissolve the binders in CSM, and you mentioned with vinyl ester you don't need peel ply. I've heard you mention those before, but all these details about the fiberglass and resins, combined into a one or two graphs would be a huge help. (I understand that a lot of the information would be "best practice", and not hard and fast rules). It's challenging to keep the "never dos" and "always dos" straight. Love the videos though! Thanks from Arizona.
Capt Joe fabulous video! Would like so much just being the vacuum man or resin mixer or glass bubbles buster just all around gopher Just for the experience Lol Thanks again for your time y'all make it look way easier than is in the Diyer world!
Wow, thank you, Sir! I would be happy to have you help out around the boat shop sometime! Glad to hear that the videos are reaching folks that appreciate the work we are putting into them!
Sunbury, OH here. Bass and only Bass, I’ve learned a ton from you. I have a 1970 Blazer top that needs attention, and I am going to use everything I have learned from your videos to make it new again. I just have to decide between paint or gel coat for the finish. I am leaning gel coat, but would love your opinion.
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel! It's hard to say for sure if gelcoat, or paint would be better for your Blazer. They could both possibly work. You might do a little experimenting or looking around to see if anyone else has done a similar repair. Appreciate you watching!
I like the PPE you are wearing. Wouldn’t matter for me, though. I would somehow find a way to have it on every part of my body. Even if I’m covered. I have to admit I admit, though I usually start out with nothing on my hands thinking oh I’m not going to get any on me. WROOOONG!

The current boat you are working on seems to need a fair bit of repair other than the transom - at what point do you say the work exceeds the boat's value?
It's hard to say on that one! It would be hard for most people to justify paying a pro to do this much work on an older boat. I am currently doing this one mainly because it's a great way to show everyone lots of different repair methods and techniques. Many folks actually just enjoy working on older boats, or maybe it has some sentimental value. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Oh yeah! I really enjoy going after some freshwater fish when I get a chance. I have never caught a smallmouth bass, that's one of my bucket lists, fish for sure! Thanks for sharing your experience with the channel
Yup, that transom is bulletproof. You just know that the manufacturer won't build a boat that strong like you build them. Thanks for the video.
Much appreciated! It's good to know I'm not the only one who believes in overbuilding.
Thank you for the gift of fiberglassing knowledge that you impart to strangers like me. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
You are very welcome! I'm happy to share with everyone. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Salmon, lingcod, halibut, albacore.
Fantastic work Joe. Could you give a cost breakdown on materials to do this transom ? Just curious

Yes, there is a special dye that is made just for catalyst. You might check with fiberglass warehouse to see if they might have some. Thanks for watching all of the way from Hawaii!
Is there a trick to using the “bubble buster” on CSM? I always end up with fibers wrapped around the metal roller. I don’t have any problems using it on the 1708.

We catch a lot of Spanish macks around here. Usually April through October, with May through September being peak time.
