My mom took a test to find out whether there was native American ancestry in her family. When the results arrived, they were negative for native American but positive for a small percentage of Samoan. I'm guessing there must be a sailor somewhere in the family tree in order for that to be there. Most of her family has European roots, so that one caught all of us by surprise.
These tests are not conclusive. If they don't have a sample swab from a political/ethnic group then they won't show a match. That's why so many people have been told they have native blood but the tests don't (ie, the whole tribe has been wiped out).
Interestingly, my spouse was always told that they had an "Indian" ancestor with obvious indications they meant that the woman in question was Native American. Well, we did a DNA test and it turns out she was Indian, Punjabi to be specific. They had the wrong meaning of the old term, but family refuses to accept the results and insist that she was Native American, even some family that met her long ago. I have strong suspicions of why they won't accept it and none of them are flattering.
This is a great observation, Claudine. Indeed, our DNA results can sometimes be at odds with family history that is passed down to us. It's important to bear in mind that even with a perfect knowledge of the history of your ancestors, DNA can still show some unexpected results. We each inherit 50% of our DNA from both our mother and father but exactly what 50% we inherit is random. This is known as genetic recombination and can cause unexpected DNA results for many members who do not inherit a region that they know their parent(s) has. Please see the article we've linked here which delves into inheritance and how it works: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Understanding-Inheritance?language=en_US. Remember that your DNA is only one element of a much larger picture, and your family history and relatives will play an important role in your genetic make-up, even if they are not specifically reflected in your ethnicity results. Check out the linked here for more information on the factors that can caused unexpected results: support.ancestry.com/s/article/Unexpected-Ethnicity-Results. We hope this article helps!

I think this is awesome! I would love to trace my family history on my maternal grandmothers side...we're black but we know we have Irish and Italian on that side through 2 my grandmother's grandparents but one of her grandfather's has an unclear ethnicity and I've heard everything from he was Indian to possibly Nepalese or he was from the Caribbean...the elders in my family who would have this information are all dead...i have one picture of him and a possible first name...I'm going to do my best to track him down 😁
When he asked about tracing his family to the beginning of time. There is this woman I went to church with who is really into family history and genealogy work. She works on it everyday for as long as I was a kid (I'm almost in my 40's) she was able to trace her and many others family history all the way back. She carries this huge long roll of paper with her everywhere she goes anytime she finds a relation to someone at church to shows them this huge poster of family tree kinda thing. It's amazing .
Her grandparents on her father's side are/were Swedish, but her father was born and grew up in Denmark, became an architect in Denmark, and then immigrated to NYC and opened a design studio, married a New Yorker and got little Scarlett.
I was gonna say, could've asked me that lmao. Johansson is a Swedish name, not Danish. Even so, her family lived in Denmark for a while so they were still Danes who later moved to the US. 😊
My mother's background and my father's background is all German English and Scandinavian. I love hearing how people have such surprising and exotic roots.

I did my DNA test with Ancestry last year as well. Not surprisingly, I was about 47 percent East European and Baltic. However, I was pleasantly surprised that I'm about 11 percent Scandinavian (mostly Norwegian). For a long time, I thought I had Italian or Spanish blood in me haha, as a lot of us in my family on the father side are very dark haired. But it seems that we prefer the North haha. In Norway we have very dark haired and skin people in the saami communities. They stem from the Sibirians travelling along the northern coast of Russia and Scandinavia. They don`t look Scandinavian at all. You see, american people... we are all just one big blend that has evolved from tribes emigrating all over, blending with other tribes creating new tribes. Etc etc.. There is not several "races". There are only difference in background, appearances, cultures and characters. ONE RACE. Until you get that, you will probably just keep on thinking your ancestry has anything to do with your behavior. It doesn`t. It`s all culture.
Fantastic. I've traced my paternal lineage back to the Norman Invasion in 1066, but that's the linear line through my father. My genetic make-up is much more complex, and includes contributions I had no idea I would discover.
My 26th Great grandfather was William the Conqueror, perhaps we have someone in common. More than 25% of the English population are his descendants. I’m grateful for the historical documentation of the British Empire.
@@donnahibbard1774it’s fascinating stuff! As he was 35-37 generations ago, just about everyone in England with English ancestry will be descended from him ( not all traceable or legitimate of course) and from anyone else alive at that time. So that also stretches out across the world for lots of people too.
I wish you would include the names of the people you’re talking to - I know some of them, but a lot of them I don’t know who they are - I mean they look familiar but I can’t quite place them! Please please please say who you’re talking to!
Only one thing: one of my female ancestors was a "fille de roi." Also, my brother's wife has TWO fille de roi in her line, AND we share one of them. My brother and wife are like 12th cousins. Not sure how much was DNA results or how much was research.
I got a whole new (and much improved) Dad! Plus a grandma and aunt and uncles and cousins and they’re all really great! I was Métis before I did my test, so that was kind of weird and now I’m Italian and Acadian. That was kind of weird; being suddenly not indigenous. Also, similarly to a couple of these people, we thought we were Croatian and we’re actually Slovenian.
I am determined to find my ancestry as soon as I can. I’m 54 and have always wanted to know plus I’d love to leave that information for my 29 yr old daughter and possible future grandchildren ❤
You really should do it, it's very easy now because you can find most records online. When I started mine, back in 1970, you had to spend a lot of time driving from town to town and visiting court houses and libraries and historical societies, and spending hours and hours scouring through old records, and maybe make several trips to each one to find the things we were looking for. And the DNA tests will give you lots of leads and clues. I will warn you, though, most of the people who match your DNA will not communicate with you, but just going thru their online trees and their other matches is a big help.
These test should be done on troubled youth..not celebrities. This will show them how far they have come to get to this present state and they’ll be more positive on their future.

That's said; your DNA tells you who and what you came from and "why"! Celebrity status doesn't matter when examining DNA. Nonetheless, it was exciting to see the results of the celebrities.
This just goes to show that we are all people. And if you are white and have a grudge against another race, for all you know one of your ancestors was that race and fought for everything you have today.
I think it's because we assume that only white people have a problem with other races. So that's the general assumption. However in the last 10 years we have learned all too well that everybody has a problem with everybody else. Maybe more people should take these tests and realize you're a part of everybody else, so get over yourself. Wouldn't that be a great step forward for humanity?

Of all the sad incoherent derp on the internet this is the most incoherent.
It was literally just the one girl and she's a middle aged woman being told for the first time in in her life that she's a third white. Not just an ancestor, an entire third. No one is gonna be happy having that monkey wrench thrown in their identity at that age. Look up "John Hurt finds out he isn't Irish."
If your brand and your career are based on one thing and something else turns out to be the case, it could be frightening. What impact will the news have on other people's opinions of you ? Will you lose your job because you are too White ? I totally understand her fear. Either way, she is a lovely lady.
It's complicated for African Americans to think about just how they may have gotten any European ancestry. People in the comments section need to give Gail King a break.
For real. All these people have no idea about the grapes perpetrated by white men against Black women from the days of chattel slavery through, well, now. I am faintly concerned a missing ancestor might've done that to my great-great-grandmother, and the combination was at worst work supervisor on entry-level employee. Imagine the moment of concern she had...
Once people were ashamed of being Native American or black, but now they get so excited. It's weird, I've always been proud of both my Native American and Spaniard blood. America is called a melting pot for a reason. In Mexico, being called Indian is an insult. I guess people now want to embrace thier Native American and Black ancestors.
With Scarlett Johansson's name, you could have asked any European on the planet. You could have just walked out of your front door onto the street and asked any European tourist. Johansson is more Swedish than Swedish...Johansen is the Danish version...
The tapestry of America is woven together tighter than any of us could have imagined. It's time to stop allowing ourselves to be divided by identity politics and embrace each other as Americans.
White people finding out they have black ancestry: Wow, that's beautiful. Black people finding out they have white ancestry: Y'all tripping, ain't no way I'm related to Larry Bird.
So, why is it, that the black lady said take it back about being 1/3 white? If the white lady's would had said take it back about being black, there would have been an outrage.
If you think about how the 'white' got there for a lot of Black people in the new world the story is oftentimes not a good one. Lots of these relationships were not consensual, so you would feel torn. Also you know exactly why if the shoe was on the other foot why there would be outrage.
@camillejames9966 sure she CAN. And I had that same reaction when I found out by DNA that I'm slightly African. So yeah I know the shame. Have a great day.
I’ve been told I look Italian. I take it as a compliment because Italian men are very handsome. I spent 1 week in Italy and I felt like I was home. So I’m sure I have some Italian ancestry in me. My mom’s maiden name is Jaquez, that’s a French name. So I’m sure I have some French ancestry in my DNA as well. My only concern is I don’t want my genetic material falling into the wrong hands if I do one of those ancestry DNA tests. On my dad’s side, one of his grandfathers was a Spaniard. So I’m just all European, lol.
i want to see how they will do with Indian (the country in Asia) people. Records are difficult to come by beyond a certain time, and people don’t do DNA tests that commonly yet, so it would be challenging
I know what makes up most my heritage. I Am mostly German as my Grandmother was almost full German, French and Dutch as a great Grandmother was half French and Dutch, Scottish on both sides And still carry the last name of my mother's clan who were mean but did the jobs they had to do, 3 different Native American tribes French also on my dad's side with ties to William The Conquer ( i mean my Ancestry fought along side William when taking England) My German roots trace back to The birth city of the Late Prince Phillip. There is a possibly of Asian somewhere do to my looks but that could also be linked to my Plains Inidian roots as my Great Great Grandmother was Full Blackfoot and had some signs that she could be Asian as some Native American do have Asian feature. But I've got ties to The MayFlower as well. I've got both Patriot and Loyalist from the Revolutionary war. Both Union and Conferdarte from the Civil War. (though my Conferate link was he was forced to fight for the south or he was be killed.) Have ties to Andersonville with someone escaping 3 times with broken bones and feet. I mean i come from some very proud and subborn roots.
The Korean/Japanese confusion is very understandable. When Japan ruled Korea, its residents were considered Japanese. When the ROK hosted the Olympics, a "Japanese" marathoner who was actually Korean lit the flame. The crowd roared at the recognition of the man's true ancestry.
In that actor's case in particular, his grandfather claimed to be Japanese after emigrating from Korea to Japan to keep his show business career going. He'd have had issues otherwise.
Bottom line: we are all related. We are all one race--the human race. We have to start loving and respecting each other so that we are all happier. Love makes the world so much better.
@Jadee95 obviously, but not everyone to can trace their family line that far back with confirmed names and records. It's common to hit walls when doing genealogical research.
i still dont understand how this works if every area is changing so much like how do you pick a time to use as the indicator or pick a group to use as the genetic indicator of a region idk
That's exactly the issue. There's no 100% sure way of testing these things, and it won't ever be completely accurate. All DNA tests have different libraries to base their results on, and therefore the percentages will be different depending on which one you get.
@@thespankmyfrank Yeah, how long have we been collecting those libraries? They are very young data sets, I would have to imagine, as we only recently had the capabilities to reliably collect DNA. Even more recently, we have been able to parse through it on such an international level. To my layman eyes, it seems all we can do is find people who are most similar, which isn't that affirming of the idea of race? Like your dna cant say anything about your culture so its not like oh see ur irish no its just oh see you are most closely matched to this group of people.

@reedthis not always. According to some of the shows, blacks and whites married. Some as far back as colonial times. Even bought farms together. It was NOT easy in the South where it was illegal.😢
It is not surprising to black people either. The only thing that I ask is was it a positive union in the family tree? Was it consensual? Was the relationship respected? Just don’t tell people that you have a white ancestor and they owned slaves. That means the slaves were your ancestors from the white relative who kept his children as slaves. 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t like these clip show clips. It feels like spoiler clips. Though this one was nice because it had a theme: you never know when the “us” and “them” you think you are or aren’t apart of isn’t totally true. So let’s be kind to everyone.
The show focuses heavily on people with recent immigrant ancestors. I have to go back 4 generations to find one immigrant. Several lines go back to Virginia and New Amsterdam. Most have multiple ethnicities. My DNA shows almost 100% British Isles and northern Europe.
I love the way they hate being told they have white ancestry, but how they love it when they are told they have black ancestry. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.
For those who don’t get why Gayle had that reaction: for people of color, in this case a black person who is descended from enslaved black people, that white percentage isn’t just fun trivia it holds a lot of historical trauma. It brings up a lot of complicated emotions. Her ancestor could’ve been raped while in bondage, is she supposed to celebrate that? If it’s more recent then that may not be the case but there’s more processing of that info that we go through than our white peers. It’s all fun for you when you find out your part whatever because you don’t have the weight of your ancestors being oppressed, enslaved and dehumanized. The context of how that dna got there is different for you. Have a bit more compassion and try to look at things from outside of your perspective rather than making judgmental assumptions.
So you believe that the sins of ones ancestors should mark them forever? Even though their actions were not new, but had been accepted for thousands of years?

She works on it everyday for as long as I was a kid (I'm almost in my 40's) she was able to trace her and many others family history all the way back. She carries this huge long roll of paper with her everywhere she goes anytime she finds a relation to someone at church to shows them this huge poster of family tree kinda thing. It's amazing .

I used to think she was European because she looks so Swedish or Danish.
If her ancestors were from Skåne, then she might still be danish :-)
Her grandparents on her father's side are/were Swedish, but her father was born and grew up in Denmark, became an architect in Denmark, and then immigrated to NYC and opened a design studio, married a New Yorker and got little Scarlett.
I was gonna say, could've asked me that lmao. Johansson is a Swedish name, not Danish. Even so, her family lived in Denmark for a while so they were still Danes who later moved to the US. 😊

Even have some English in me. Was quite fun to do the test. Unfortunately, I could not trace a lot of ancestors (especially on father's side) as a lot of them were peasants and could not read and write. :(

For real. All these people have no idea about the grapes perpetrated by white men against Black women from the days of chattel slavery through, well, now.

It's odd how many people seem offended by finding out they have white ancestors
So, why is it, that the black lady said take it back about being 1/3 white? If the white lady's would had said take it back about being black, there would have been an outrage.
If you think about how the 'white' got there for a lot of Black people in the new world the story is oftentimes not a good one. Lots of these relationships were not consensual, so you would feel torn. Also you know exactly why if the shoe was on the other foot why there would be outrage.

I wish Americans wouldn't be so obsessed with race and instead realize how awesome their ancestry is.

I love the way you watched this whole video and then proceeded to lie about it and make exaggerated claims. Gives me a a feeling of deja vu.
Even though their actions were not new, but had been accepted for thousands of years?

all were awesome except Gayle King finding out she was 3rd white. "You take that back" like it is an insult. SMH. We should all be proud of all of our mix as it is what makes us who we really are. those realizations and discoveries can help span the divides and open up worlds.
That's was the best part, you can't tell someone how to feel.
Uhm... You do realized AAs have European ancestry mostly because of slavery, right? Ignoramus.
@@TheCarlScharnberg you do realize that a good percentage of people from AA Heritage (as high as 40%) were actually not descended from slaves, right? Actual numbers and fact count. And she could just as easily a been one of them. Not discounting the fact that slavery was a horrible thing because it was. But Jesus Christ, all white people are not to blame. This ridiculous, victimhood, societal urge everyone has is pathetic and ridiculous.
Well she’s sick mentally, so…
@@TheCarlScharnberg: that their own people SOLD them into, right??? Duh.
