Spring Snow Plowing is Gnarly. Not for the feint of heart.

- We’re using two trucks to plow put these difficult backcountry roads in the surrounding Nederland, CO area. We’re having too much fun. It was super fun working with my best friend and competitor, Jeramy Meyers from Meyers Services on this one. He’s in the white truck. Getting us unstuck. This grey truck is a 2017 Dodge Ram Cummins 3500 and a Western V plow and the white one is also a dodge.
My transmission shop appreciates deep snow ❤️
😂😂
This is a video on how not to plow snow. Thank you, for an excellent example.
What do you mean? The snow plows look pretty powerful.
Glad it was helpful!
Hey fagfan why don’t you post a video on how great of personality you have I’m sure it would be some great content
The more that I watch snowplow videos the more that I like snowblowers.
Word
Getting stuck with a 4 wheel drive truck used to be so much fun - NOT. I finally got a snowblower for the tractor and even though I don't sit in a warm cab, it's a hundred times better.
Glad they weren’t using my equipment. I’d fire them. I can only imagine that this video was for entertainment on how to not plow snow.
I agree !! Two clowns at play !! One didn't even know when his front wheels were turned.. on several occasions!! Morons !!
For one put more weight in the back of your truck ,two ,slow and steady don’t ram the snow bank , it’s just like when you operate a dozer you don’t take the whole pile at once, unless you have a d10 , use your v plow to your advantage , you pretty much showed everyone how to destroy your truck in less then 8 minutes 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the tips. Yes, we abused the truck last year. We’re doing better with it this year.
And abused the road
The author of this video and owner of the trucks responded in the most humble way I think I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Most people get defensive and have some smart ass response to constructive criticism.
Not enough traction to go slow. With that much snow no pickup is going to do well. This called for a loader, tractor or dozer.
Blade should be 3-4 inches off the ground when working that deep of snow.
Several things stick out to me, 1. Always use 4wheel drive
2. Chain all 4 tires
3. Speed is your enemy
4. Those plows should have feet that keeps the blade about 1” -2” off the gravel
5. Don’t sprint the tires, that’s how you get stuck
6. plow sooner
My thoughts exactly only 1500 pounds of sand in the back
Never chain the front unless you want expensive repairs
For normal driving yes, however for plowing you should not be going as fast as you would for normal driving and the extra traction keeps you going the right direction. You need to be extra carful yes, a very helpful trick to reduce the chance of damage is to let ought 5 ish lbs of air from the front tires before chaining use a Jack to elevate the wheel from the ground, install the chain then refill the tire till the chain has no slack but not quite fully inflated (-2 or 3psi) also you need to make sure the chains for the front are exact fit you can’t have any “loose chain” flopping about.
“What good is traction on the rear, if you can not steer”
Adding weight to the back would of been too easy 🤦🤦 let’s do it the hard way 🤦
The driver of the white ran definitely knows how to handle his equipment
That’s right. He’s a great driver.
@@HighPerformanceEarthworks but the white truck always goes over the area that initially have been plowed by the black truck so he’s driving and pushing allot less snow, from side to side. Black truck has to do the hard work braking threw the 2 feet of snow
Right. Lots of learning last year.
This looks like the equivalent of “hold my beer and watch this” snow plowing.
Man that is one gnarly driveway!!! It appears that it's all uphill. Too bad there wasn't someone that was able to come downhill and break trail. You guys work well together for sure.....Stay safe....
Hey thanks for the encouraging words, Kerry. You’re a beacon of light in the dark. One positive comment out of 100. I really appreciate it.
That snow is so beautiful.
Spring mountain snow is tough. Great job guys.
Thanks!
0:07 RWD 👏
Snowblower on the back of a tractor but not only be better but much more efficient.
If you guys do this for a living might i suggest a serious machinery upgrade! I have lots of roads on my property and a warehouse area I keep clean over the winter and I already have a tractor and snowblower and loader on it then I added a 77 OshKosh plow truck with a 12' straight blade I can angle wherever I want from inside the cab. The truck has turbocharged 6 Cylinder CAT engine and weighs 32,000 pounds without the blade full time 4 wheel drive of course, it might not be as pretty as your pickups but I could see you doing enough damage to your two pickups in a couple years you would have more expense than I paid for the OshKosh.
Full set of 4 chains on both trucks will change your life
A lot of people don’t realize how hard some of this is. Good job
Thanks. There’s definitely a learning curve to it all. A ton of good tips on here. We’ll run weight in the back this year and see how that does for us and try some of the other tips jere too.
@@HighPerformanceEarthworks i plow with close to 1000 lbs in the back of my superduty, it helps but you cant win them all expeically if theirs ice or the snows been packed down like ice. the snow is always really wet and heavy in my neck of the woods and we get between 1-3 feet durring an actual storm. if you dont plow with it you will fight all day!!
Should read idiots plowing. We do 24 + in one pass. 1000#'s counter weight in a f350 with a Fisher Stainless V and real snow tires...no chains. Slow steady turns...no issues. Uphill we will make a skim but otherwise we do a floating blade and try to get it as clean as we can...if its over 28in it leaves some behind but the advantage of clean tracks can not be emphasized enough.
Very true statement these guy's are beginner's
I DEEP snow break the snow with the blade UP about 6" +- off the ground to get in and out completely, then it's easy to work the driveway thereafter
If you raise the V plow up 4" and make two passes you will have a more harmonious outcome.
I'd never put the plow all the way down on gravel. 4:19 always happens to me when I do!!!!
Might of done that atleast once mid storm lol
I think if it was my road I'd be getting them to pay for the work to have the road put back to the way it was! Can't believe you're in that much snow without chains and expect good results.
They have chains on 👀
1. They have studded tires
2. You can’t expect a clean job on an up hill gravel driveway.… you either plow it as well as you can or it doesn’t get done 🤷🏻♂️
Look like fun and nice scenery
My Dad would plow with his 1970 GMC 3/4 ton 250 Straight 6 4 Speed 2wd every year it had a twin cylinder dump under the factory bed we would fill it with fire wood and snow. More weight the better of course. It had those deep tread 1980's Goodyear Mudder's on the rear and it never did let him down. He'd go to get stuck and lift the bed a little and drive on out.....
That's a 300.00 push all day long....😁👍
i had hell with around my area it was wet snow but i would put the chains on the front
Look like nice tires on those trucks too! I have the Nitto Terra Grappler G2 tires and they are awesome in the snow and quiet on the road. Deep snow there!
Just obliterating that driveway
First time out on a nasty snow job? What a task.
It might have been ok to tell the customer that a machine matched to the job is necessary and it will be subbed out to another crew.
Then go down the road and do some drives that you can make money on.
My little 18 foot long 8,000 pound 6 wheel drive motor grader with a front knock down blade and rear winch might have done a nice slow speed job. It has in the past. Probably much better than my full size 2 wheel drive TLB. It doesn't have a blade on the front bucket, or 4 wheel drive.
The last passenger vehicle I used for deep plowing was a ratty 70's Jeep Wagoneer with a 10 inch lift. It had posi rears and case with four tire chains. After that I remember thinking I would not use a nice vehicle for plowing. Made good money with that old truck, about $600 an hour.
invest in a Power Wagon it has 4 wheel differential lock with chains you may not get stuck or get a snow blower for it with the Power Wagon
Hard core plowing for sure. Ramming it up..
That driveway needs a bobcat
Truck sliding all over the place, what kind of tires are you running? All Terrain or real wintertires ?
My plow truck run real scandinavian studded wintertires, all terrain/mud tires dont work nearly as good.
I have sandbags in the back, i also use to get me unstuck.
It was pretty solid snow pack on about a 16% slope. Tough to tell how steep it is in the video. We’re running all terrains. We’re hauling the when we’re not plowing so the winter tires don’t hold up with the highway miles we’re laying down. I threw our compaction wheel attachment on the bed on the last storm per the advice of the other guy below. Seems like that is going to help us.
Ruining 2 trucks
Some of the comments on here 😂😂. There trucks, they are meant to be worked lol. Wish I could have this much fun plowing.
Heavy spring snow is the worst. Soon as you drive it it packs hard and slippery as hog snot. I don't really know how slippery as hog snot is. Gotta be slippery though! Enjoyed the video. Maybe spring will be early this year. I'll know in just a few weeks when Phil comes out with his forecast here in Pennsylvania.
Lol
Tire chains help a lot ya know... Thats how we do it
They have em on back tires of grey one
Add in about three or 400 pounds to the back helps a lot when your plywood
500/1000. Anything less is bro isn't enough
You will only buy studded snows once before you never NOT buy them again. The difference is beyond noticeable. Great job boys! This is not easy plowing by any means.
Thanks
Aww.... takes two Dodges to do the part of one Ford.
Lol agreed. Not a fan myself. Giving the dodge make a whirl but will most likely be trading it in come 2021.
Where you trading that truck? I'll steer clear of that place. Never buy a used truck that has a plow.
I still have it and it’s doing good work for us at the moment.
@@jeffshultz3883 I just learned this the hard, expensive, and rusty way recently!
@@JasonLaMonica Me too! It looked like a great truck. That thing was a nightmare! Lesson learned by both of us.
Try running chains on your steering axle you're probably have better luck also more ballast in the back of the truck would help. I run about 1k in the bed behind the axle on my 06 cummins basically same setup just a SS fisher. We get 140"+ a year. 20-35 plowable events a season.
Dang! That’s next level. We’re still just cutting our teeth over here by the sounds of it. Thanks so much for the tips. We’ll definitely take your advice. What do you use for ballast in the rear? Thinking about a sand spreader. Any comments on one of those?
I'm in Connecticut. We get a ton of snow. We just got a foot with 45+mph winds. We get prolly 15-20 events a season. We used to get 30+,but global warming
I was plowing the blizzard of '78 in CT using my dads 75 Chevy K20 with 7 ft fisher blade. At the far end of one push the lower edge tripped back and grabbed the end of a fallen tree. I couldnt back up, i could not go forward until i dug the blade out and cut the branch. That was heavy wet snow. Straps were an improvement on logging chains. Now i am getting Matts Off Road Recovery kinetic rope and soft shackles for recovery.
Are you still doing this road? Did you find a better solution? That is a very difficult road for light duty pickups especially with wet snow. Snow tracks might give you enough traction to plow in 4 low but they are expensive and have to be taken off to drive over 35mph. If you put some 35's with chains on one of your trucks and add enough weight you might be able to drive to the top first and plow down which is really how it should be done. Plowing uphill is very hard on equipment.
3/4 ton ram for sale..dark gray..never beaten lol Jesus christ that poor truck
It’s a one ton but I do feel bad for it! But it’s a ram at least he is using it how the brand name is!
Time for a tractor with a snowblower lol
CAT D9 BULLDOZER for that driveway would be great
Lol. Yes, but mobilization. Driveways up here in the mountains of CO should be illegal. We got hosed on this contract.
I plowed for several years over the hill from you in Winter Park and Fraser. Those heavy spring snows can really suck when they get that deep.
Ya kick ass ..
4 wheel drive, heavy chains on all 4 wheels and about 1000 pounds of weight in the back. No need for a second truck. Just sayin
observation: @ 1:12 I knew that was coming. Wasn't hoping it would but that drive you had better look at it a few times before snowfall.
Good tip.
Put 900 lbs in the box and you won’t get stuck
That is some deep heavy snow. It takes weight to move weight. Think of Sumo Wrestlers. Fill that box up with sand or bolt a chunk of heavy plate in the back to hit that snow. Was entertaining.
Yea need at least 1klb in the ass, basically run same truck fisher xv and real winter tires.
Indeed. We’ll be running that way this spring.
God bless these cars :( Tractor job.
looks like a lot of fun, but maybe get a snow cat, borrow a groomer lol
Well at least it's a Cummins
Just wondering why America got those little toy trucks for plowing?
That would be a piece of cake for a plow in Europe. (Unimog)
Average people arent going to buy a truck like that for plowing. Some townships or county/state government use big trucks like you are saying. Pick ups are more cost effective for personal/small company use
use a 4 wheel drive car, you need to mount a winch on the car. Andrew Camarata
No chains and no ballast?
They needed chains on a 4 tires
Good tip. We got all four chained up this year.
You need a tractor for this lane way
Agree. We suffered damage to the trucks on this one as well. Slid the grey dodge into a boulder hiding in the snow on the side of the road.
Looks like you need bigger machines for that job.
No weight in the trucks is half your problem, need at least 1500lbs in the bed ... rear end wouldn’t come out then.
On it.
just curious do your plow customers think 12" deep is the same price as 2-3" ? you know. And then do they try to pay with a check? Or worse a business check with their doctor business name on it?
Cause they try in Central IL. I can fill in a drive entrance If I'm screwed bad enough or won't get caught.
Lol. Yes, last year was our first year plowing and we had a hell of a time keeping up with collections and billing. We got through it barely. This year all customers pay in advance. 12” is definitely more. We plow every 4” on annual contracts only so people gotta be paid up if they want plow service.
A small dozer would be a much better choice..but destroying 2 trucks is always a blast
Where is the proper ballist, would make this so much easier!
Get snow deflectors for the plows there a life saver also not as much light snow powder on the windshield with them
This should be a commercial for how not to plow. If I hired yall, yall would be fired before you tore up my road / driveway and even finished the job.
Time to break out the Unimog!!
What’s a unimog? Found it: classiccars.com/listings/view/1026578/1969-mercedes-benz-unimog-for-sale-in-denver-colorado-80205
Definitely the right rig for the job.
@@HighPerformanceEarthworks Pretty much a tractor/truck hybrid.
You can make multiple passes with your blade slightly up, cant make money if you gotta buy new equipment
Especially a new 1 ton
Agreed. We replaced the head gasket already. We’ll be making smaller cuts this year. We have easier driveways as well. Last year was just the brutal school of hard knocks.
Tire chains would have save a lot of headache.
We had them on the rears but without weight in the rear it didn’t help us too much.
1500 lbs of weight will make a HUGE difference next time
Can you say "snow blower on a large tractor"?
Tractor with a blower
Just buy a bigger tractor and you dont have to abuse the trucks anymore ;)
Right. We were contracted for this one.
@@HighPerformanceEarthworks Then you should have subcontracted that one out to somebody with the right equipment. That was a tractor w/ blower job. You probably lost your behind on it, and beat the crap out your trucks.
What state are u in
Colorado Rocky Mountains just outside of Boulder, CO.
Chain all 4.
is the grey dodges blade not down enough or is the truck not strong enough ?
We got the job done.
I'm not hiring this crew. ouch.
Tractor with a blower would solve all their problems....
Agreed
I wonder why that fan is singing
Lmfao...
Fan clutch was shot. It’s fixed now. That dodge is back to 100% due to the awesome shop crew we have.
White guy stuff.
Military lmtv with a fisher V make short work of that
Track skid steer with 8’ plow would destroy that driveway. Trucks suck unless it’s just a few “
Snow blower people !
The guy in the dodge was going to fast for conditions
Why 4 low? Atleast sounds like it
Chains and a v plow with a 🧠 you'll accomplish any roadway...
What's going on here
Looks like you need some weight in the back. That v plow sucks I've plowed much deeper snow with a straight blade and does a cleaner job.
They don't look too professional to me getting stuck all the time
Are these guys new?? Good grief
Snow like that put chains on front where you got most your weight & need control
That’s the mew approach this year. We have easier driveways as well.
You guys need weight in those trucks... You wouldn't have near as much trouble.
Wow man im a doper want a hit
if he is your friend ask him how to plow snow...You need lessons...
Lol. Lessons abound. Hopefully the learning sticks.
No idea what they are doing push some snow of to the side
Pretty sad these guys don't have a clue
How much do you charge for a job like that holyshit
Thanks for the warning. I almost passed out
5500 Dodge with a street Boss plow 9-foot abusing the truck yeah Dad, wait and you just take the time and you take a little time off the edge 16 years I fine I like my straight edge
Hard to watch...put more weight in the bed and stop spinning your tires
