- Iris DeMent's encore from her gig in Campbells Tavern in Clockanover was John Prine's 'In Spite of Ourselves' John, who was in the audience, joined her on stage for the last show of the last night of the 2011 Galway Arts Festival. Enjoy! Filmed by Des Kilbane.
THIS will never, ever, ever get old. An absolute musical gem for the ages.
When someone invents a time machine I know exactly when it should be channeled to change history. I cannot really believe that John Prine is no longer on this earth. The essence of spirit of kindness and joy of humanity encapsulated in one man.
That's about as well said of John as anything I've ever read or heard about him.
They look like they are having a wonderful time doing this song. Two old friends who genuinely like one another. Embrace the moment it just doesn't get much better.
R.I.P John Prine, thank you for the great music you left for us.
look at the smile on Johns face , when Iris starts singing... Says it all for me.
..........Beautiful smiles to go with their big O hearts.......and now.....I've a big beautiful smile to match....life...what a journey we get to experience....if.....we can be humble. Thanks Iris n John. 💕
not much flash, no pyrotechniques, no fake build up, just talent and class✅😎✌️👍
So true. All that dancing around and stage show for mainstream popular music is mainly to cover up the mediocre melodies and ordinary singing
Philipo Pruesse for sure, the so called ‘mainstream’ pop music scene has no melody or sensible story to tell. if you isolate the ‘music’ from the ‘singing’ the sound is awful
The audience is joining in. I'm crying now.
Regardless how old we all get, Iris is SO beautiful. (John too)
What a pair. One of the most amusing songs I've ever heard. Iris DeMent clearly "owns" this song. I get the feeling that if either of them forgot the lyrics - the crowd would just chime right up and get them back on track. Thank You Both. They're both so cute together.
As a 74 year old, once folk-singer turned nightclub entertainer turned 'entertainer' for (even older) elders, I appreciate their humor, comaraderie, innocence, sweetness --and natural appearance: nuttin' "put on" here. And takes lots of experience to pull it off, with such ease and grace. Good Stuff.
Your good post got me thinking again (at 82) about John coming up from the audience to join Iris at the end of her last show of that last night of the 2011 Galway Art Festival. What an special encore, "In Spite of Ourselves," for the over-the-top enthusiastic crowd, who hooted and hollered, knew all the lines and sang along with them! The natural poet had outdone himself again with "nuttin 'put on' here" just as you described. And, "Good Stuff"--the "humor, camaraderie, innocence and sweetness" sure was there, too, as always, with such lines as, "Honey, we're the big door prize!" June 13, 2021 now...more than a year since April 7, 2020...when COVID...fed to our nation as "a HOAX"...sadly took John Prine, too.
Love this song it makes me smile from ear to ear👏😄
Fundamentals of great music.......raw talent....RIP...JP...❤️🔥🇮🇪
A classic Prine and DeMent song. They sing it so well together. I can see they are enjoying singing it together as much as I am enjoying seeing them sing it together.
Two precious people !
By the time this video was shot John must have played this song a 1,000 times and he was fighting cancer, but he's smiling and laughing during the song like he's doing it for the first time. Love it (and Iris of course)
Yes. ❤
Two of the best, can't get enough.
Love this song more and more every time I hear it.
I like the way the crowd really got into this song without really interfering with John & Iris.
That's what the Irish do at concerts, God love 'em!
I love her voice! ☺️
It's one thirty six 02142020. I'm 73 years old and i think I've just set off on a John Prine listening Fest!
This has left a big ole heart dancing in my eyes!
Bye John....RIP

timeless no matter how old we get
this shows how much fun you can have with a guitar and a few words!!!!!
Just found this incredible! Two icons together
Fantastic song and an even more fantastic performance! Love both of these unique and outstanding performers!
Iris Dement, gotta love a lady with a sense of humor. John Prine wrote so many great songs that ran the gamut of many emotions. RIP Mr. Prine, taken from us by this China Virus in 2020.
The Trump virus.
@Gus VanHorn No, he didn't invent the virus, just disregarded it, then chose to scapegoat and pass the blame on its aftermath; demonizing Wuhan and China the same way he's always done when he fails. It's NEVER him...and you Gus, will eagerly oblige...It's time for the next John Prine song: "Your flag decal won't get you into heaven anymore."
I miss John.
wow! priceless.
Thanks Mike
Great performers and what a great song.
Big love to both Iris and John the UK - the odd blip only makes it more endearing, and great when the crowd come in
****I Love Her Singing Voice...

I've been binging John recently and never seen him smile so much as in this video. Such a loss for this world :(
Thanks to Steven Colbet, I found John Prine. Through John Prine I found Iris. I couldn't be happier. Play their music all the time now. There's just something about this song that's visceral to me. I've played this song so many times, but this is the first I saw this video and how the crowd interacts with them. Needed to wipe my eyes to see the whole video.
great joy. thank you!!
we are listening to greatness.
Love the song
A REAL love song.

🙋🏻♀️👍
If you could bottle like, then I have a whole huge bottle of like for this vid. thanks gafrv for this. PS, I think Prine and I are about the same age now, not certain if we always were, though. Damn old postman--- Kristofferson shares the blame for discovering him
Just gets better and better!!!
Just pure magic. Sadly John is no longer with us. Great to have these videos though. His songs will live forever. Gerry Farry
Lovely simply lovely

Wooohoooo, I love you guys! You are the cutest pair out there.
Thanks for this upload, GAF TV!
Fantastic ❤
Ive fallen in Love with Iris. Unusual voice but the more you hear her sing the better she gets. This song is so funny. They compliment each other.
Check out her duet with Delbert McClinton Trouble
@@lindastokes5589 It's probably good, but I doubt it's as funny, clever and as readily identified with as "In Spite Of Ourselves".
@@4orrcountry You're right, not really as funny but, if you like Iris it is something to listen to.
I love Iris Dement.
I love to hear Iris. It takes me to Tennessee and see my wife’s kin. Her cousin sings like Iris..family reunions are great
That's a UA-cam treasure! His eyes sing along with his voice (and HEART!) John's lyrics describe how love works out here in the real world...here in the HEARTland, not only in America, but as this comment section demonstrates, from throughout the world. Shows the cleverness and genius of John Prine. And one of his best came late in his career. We thought we had our Top Ten lists all set, but along comes this one and it has to be on it. I mean, did you hear that audience singing along? How often does that happen, and in an impromptu performance? And Iris shows why she's such a great duet partner for Prine. What a team, what a song! That's our BIiG door prize! •Sticks-of-TNT •Sent from my iCave
Thank you
AMEN........Love Them Both.....They Are Great........
