I guess the upshot is, prune the heck out of quince. As youmaineyou said, the reason I'm on here is that our quince is 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide. I'd hoped to find some proper instruction on dealing with it.
This is hilarious ! I just came in from trimming my white flowering quince, I actually thought I might be doing a bad thing, but it has gotten really tall. Seems I might have done a good thing without knowing. I started these white blooming, from seed about 5 years ago. They were well over 12 foot when I started trimming today. I hope it goes well. The blooms smell heavenly every spring. Anybody have any suggestions for the use of the green fruit? It smells good too
This is interesting, but what of a quince bush that is not so small? What of a quick the size of a small car? Seriously, his plant is straight from the nursery, not one in serious need of pruning.
This is wrong. You always prune flowering quince from the base. Cutting tops makes it rangy and crooked. Take out the biggest canes with long loppers to protect yourself from thorns.
