I can do that with dreaming, to select one of the five dozen or so standard scenarios I dream about. They will progress with variations but the baseline remains the same.
I spent several years at an RAF Base in East Anglia in the mid 80’s, I was with the United States Air Force. One of my regrets in life was I didn’t stay in England when my service time ended. I loved your country and still do. I loved the history, the countryside, the weather, the people, the pubs and those wonderful pints. I traveled often while I was there. In Cambridge I enjoyed napping in the sun while lying in the grass next to the river after a lunch of fish and chips and a pint. I’m retired now and would love to spend my remaining years in England but your immigration rules won’t allow it. I do plan on returning for a few weeks of fly fishing and sitting on the bank of some of those rivers smoking my pipe.
@@jimmythedrum446 yea, it a bummer. They have an income and money in the bank requirement. I have the income, which is from rental properties but to meet the money in the bank requirement I’d have to sell the properties which then leaves me short on income.
Herr Guite, in another lifetime perhaps, is uncle Bilbo Baggins in his silken waistcoat, sitting in his crammed study, brainstorming ideas about his next book chapter, 'To Tolkien and Back Again'
Yet the character Bilbo (in the sense of character traits), all physical characteristics aside, was rather egocentric in my estimation after reading so many chapters about him. For example, he could have easily understood that he was far too removed from the situation to go to Mt. Doom, yet he seemed to have thought he had a chance.
In my opinion, the scene in Bree is one of the best in the trilogy. The mood, tension, and overall feeling are perfect literature. It's cold and rainy out, smoky and loud inside. And the Riders are coming.
I sadly lost my elderly mother this week. Its been very stressful. I have not long found this channel but it has been so comforting and I have been inspired to pick up and start to re- read The Lord of the Rings. Thank you Malcom for being a safe harbour to quiet my mind and help me escape, albeit for a brief moment.

I gleefully wallow in the atmosphere of your videos, Malcolm ; your wondrous, evocative, and heartfelt readings of Tolkien; our mutual delight in pipe smoking, inspired by the great man himself; the glorious carnage of your homely library; your delightful nature; your pleasure in the smoky malts; your warmth; your encouragement to be joyful in simple pleasures; your deep love of books and eye-wateringly marvellous library; your Hobbit-like humour and chuckles; the way you make me feel like you are speaking with just me over a pipe and an ale; in fact, everything about your charming and happy videos. So I just wanted to express a sincere and profound thank you.
This is so comforting and awesome at the same time. I have that very edition with Alan Lee illustrations. Im going to to a video on how I acquired it and the lifetime it has been with me. "Books have a life of their own. They pass from one to another. Always living on an endless journey." (my quote) Bree Town has a special place in my heart. When reading it, my mind created a perfect layout I could follow to the Prancing Pony to have mutton stew and cider ales and smoke my pipe and tarry with the locals. Its description is so vivid to the reader. Just brilliant. Thank you Malcolm.
Feeling relax and enjoying a dram of Laphroaig lore or two . Prancing Pony is the kind of Inn I search out on my travels , a jar of ale and a quite corner to observe people in between reading Tolkien or the like . Thank you Mr Guite
I was reading George MacDonald’s Phantastes for a graduate seminar in Medievalism and came across your channel. I’m so glad I did. What a wonderful way of spending my Christmas break, listening to your readings of Tolkien and Dickens and Macdonald. It gave me a much deeper appreciation for Phantastes, renews my appreciation for Tolkien, and reinvigorates my seasonal fervor for Dickens.
Phil Keggy, I haven't heard his name is 2 forevers. One of the best guitar players in the world and he get very little recognition. This channel is really charming. Thank you.
I love your mention of life and literature weaving together. I experienced that during my time in the American Northwest while reading “Ecotopia”, and also during my time in Buenos Aires while reading “El Túnel” and “Rayuela”.
Malcolm, I would happily listen to you speak on any subject you choose, for as long as you might choose to speak. Thank you for every second you put into these videos.
A wonderful reading and chat about the importance of a good pub with tasty beers on offer. Mine is called Church Street pub. It allows me to tell me elderly Mother that I went to Church today. 😊
As I recall The Prancing Pony in the movies was the only place when we get a little cameo from the director of the trilogy himself, Peter Jackson. He happens to be leaving the inn as he gets a big bite on a carrot. Interesting little fact. I've loved this charming yet somewhat ominous inn since the very first time I visited many years ago reading The Fellowship for the first time. An excellent worldbulding from the very beginning. Cheers.
Another wonderful installment. Much to the chagrin of my significant other, however, I fear that the explanation as to why my office looks the way it does shall henceforth be: “it’s the familiar comfort of friendly clutter.” :)
A wonderful reading and I love the references to Strider in the Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's own telling of a Strider like character. Thank you malcolm!
This man is like a warmed duvet, wrapping itself around our weary bodies, and lulling our minds into other worldly place's we know, but have never visited with as much vision as Malcolms narrative. Thank you Malcolm for these escapes from our bonkers world.
Wonderful reading. That book you have is just stunning. Im 59 years old. First read this as a teen. I will still pick these books up and read them at least once a year. Never gets old. Thank you for this tonight
Wonderful stuff! I have spent many a night in Bree with Barliman, Nob, Bob and even the likes of Bill Ferny and Harry Goatleaf. “It has been a comfort in trouble,” throughout my life. Lothlorien and Rivendell are wonderful but a bit lofty for the likes of me. I visit the House of Tom Bombadil when I’m allowed though I must admit I do know his name yet! Cheers!
Back in the early eighties I had the good fortune to live in the little village of Aldsworth in the Cotswolds, and I worked in the local inn - The Sherbourne Arms. This was a traditional old English inn and was patronised mostly by villagers and occassionally a passing traveller - I once served Tim Rice (the lyricist) with a cigar... I treasure my time working there, it was a great way to get to know the locals and all the gossip, and I always think of the parallels between such old inns and the Prancing Pony that Tolkein described so fondly.
Your gentle Bristol accent suddenly brought a delightful and interesting new dimension to Strider, Malcolm, just goes to show the power of the storyteller. Lovely stuff, cheers from the Welsh Marches!
There is an inn, a merry old inn......They come from Mordor. Save us!........One thing drives out another..........(oh for a cozy fireplace amidst the Misty Mountains with a pipe and cup of hot tea.....sigh)
Somehow this particular reading brought back a memory of me reading this as a 15-year-old kid. It was so magical and for me the introduction of Strider was the moment that really pulled me all the way inn. Thank you.
Spot on with pubs and inns Malcolm. The Eagle and Child was the last pub I spent a meaningful length of time with an old friend of mine as it happens before moving abroad. I was chuffed to find out the illustrious former clientele of the establishment.

I read The Lord of the Rings through, just about every year. I guess it's about time to start again! I love hearing little excerpts from Tolkien's life; it would have been a real privilege to meet him. I suppose second best, is reading every scrap of his letters and writings I can get.
What an intriguing story! I think it is very compelling when there is literary crossover like that. To be able to go about the ordinary in life, and see mystery and story behind things, will bring so much depth into our writing.
I look forward to these videos, Mr. Guite. It feels like visiting an old friend. Cozy and kind. Jovial. And, of course, all about my favorite books. Also, about Tolkein and his history with his writing buddies. Thank you for making these.
