I always remember him bumping into me at Angel's costume shop in Shaftesbury Avenue, he said "sorry sir" I replied "that's fine, carry on Sergeant Major" . He burst into laughter. What a gent.
Brilliant!
Great anecdote. 😊
Just watched this video with my mum, Sarah. Windsor is my grandfather and my mum’s Dad ❤️ we both loved it and thought it was a beautiful tribute to a man we both miss and love dearly. Thank you 😊
Thank you so much Rosie! I am so pleased that you and your mum like the video. That really means a lot to me that your family enjoyed it. Your grandfather gave such pleasure and laughter to so many over the years and is one of my all-time comedy heroes.
Just to echo what Stuview TV said below Rosie. Your Granddad was a comedy legend. I was born in 1969 and remember most of the roles your Granddad played. So much respect for a great man. RIP Mr Davies x
StuView TV thank you so much for your kind words
qpulse thank you very much 😊
Rosie, your Grandfather was a legend. My dad served with the army in India, Malaya and Singapore during WW2. He loved to watch your Grandfather as BSM Williams because he was so convincing. It took my Dad back to his own time in the army.
I am from his home village of Nantymoel.
I never met him, but he was in my father's class in school.
Great tribute.
I drove through Nantymoel when I come over the Bwlch mountain ⛰
Loved watching this trip down memory lane and I smiled to learn that he reached a good old 88 years old. 😃👍🇬🇧
He'll always be one of those guys I wished I'd met.
I met him a few times on the London Underground.
First time, I was sitting opposite him. I looked over, recognised him immediately, smiled and nodded at him.
He smiled back, and just said EVENING. I could see that he'd had a couple.
Next time, I think we just recognised each other, and I said EVENING to him, and we just exchanged pleasantries.
I could sense there was no ego to him.
The thing that stood out was he smiled at everybody, and everybody reacted to him.
I bet he was a brilliant bloke, and would be fun to have a pint with.
The man was a legend. Watch the boxset of "It ain't half hot mum" show wouldn't have been anything like the huge success without him. Great report 👍RIP Windsor 🙏👏
My all time hero Bsm Williams loved him dearly. Would have loved to have met him. Thanks Windsor for the great memories
Many thanks for posting, some great memories of Winsor ....
My twin brother met him and got his autograph in Inverness Eden court theatre. He signed his autograph "lovely boy" and was a really nice man. My brother said he loved the episode where he sits on the ice in "it aint half hot mum". A great star of British tv.
Thanks Stu, great tribute to a great comedy actor. He used to live near me in Carshalton in the 80s. I often shout 'lovely boy' in a Windsor Davies accent to my teenage son's, who in turn think I'm mad. I'd like to watch some of the old 'ain't arf hot mum's episodes.
This has just brought a fully grown man to tears. "I didn't expect that to happen" I feel very fortunate to have grown up in the era before political correctness destroyed everything wholesome. While I accept changes possibly did need be made, things have just gone to the other extreme these days. Yes we mocked other nationalities and religions, but we mocked ourselves just as much, and that makes me very proud to be British. we are able to see our own flaws, and make fun of them. As a nation though we have forgotten how to laugh at ourselves,as we have been beaten down for decades now by this PC crap. I feel ashamed of my generation,at 52 I feel that I have not done enough to stop this hideous regime infiltrating the younger generations.
Watching this inspirational man, that brought me so much laughter during my formative years, has made me realise that i don't really look up to anyone these days. I think we all need a hero in our lives.
I am going to consciously make more of an effort, and hopefully reverse this horrible situation that has become accepted as progress.
Why has this wave of social engineering been embraced by the commonwealth as the 'new truth of the current age' ?? >i'm sure there was a time when common sense ruled our lives with as much prominance.
well said
The fact is mate, Generations change. I'm sure the Generation before Windsor hated the idea of their comedy dying out.
As a 22 year old I can safely say comedy IS still alive, you just need to look for it. Doug Stanhope, Patrice O'Niel still have very active viewers, alibet Patrice is dead.
You won't reverse anything, and the fact you are viewing generational changes as "Good" or "Bad" is wrong.
There's no good or bad, there's just "Different time periods". Baring in mind, back in those days, being racist was completely fine and was apart of society. Women were done as they were told and their main prospects in life were hopefully being married to a wealthy man that could take care of them. Homosexuality was buried so deep, it seemed non existent (It wasn't).
Comedy reflects the society of which we live in. We no longer live in a racist, sexist, homophobic society. Isn't that a good thing?
To me, shows like Ain't half hot, Dad's Army, Only Fools, Porridge are relics of the past, and should be enjoyed as such. It must be scary, and honestly quite frightening to see everything you knew as a child dying out from society. But rest assured, I, My children, and my childrens children will be in the same position as you, asking the same questions. And one day, most likely, Even I, as Left wing as I am, will be viewed as "Right Wing".
As a great man once said, "Oh dear, How sad, Never Mind".
I have just got the box set of never the twain and it is brilliant!!! The most underrated sitcom in British history!!!
Well done mate my mates and I still do Sgt Major Williams impersonations to this day. RIP Windsor
Thank you!
In the seventies It Ain't Half Hot Mum was tremendous popular here in the Netherlands. Even now still love watching it. No one could've played the role of sergeant major better than Windsor Davies.
Best Sergeant Major ever.
the ONLY Sgt. Maj. ever :)
Better even than Snudge! There's no greater compliment !
This man has made me laugh till my sides have split.. Let’s not forget him & this style of comedy as it cannot ever be replaced because of modern society.. Many thanks Windsor for the many laughs
Takes me back. Nice little tribute & glad I found it!
Wonderful tribute to the Legend Windsor Davies. You did miss one very important role thought. In 1989, he did a health & Safety video for the RAF, called 'Hazardous Ops'. Using his Battery Sergeant Major role.
Great video. Good job.
I used to drive him from his Carshalton home to Londons West end to perform in "Run for your wife" when I was a mini cab driver in a previous life . RIP mate ...
Currently watching the re-runs of Never the Twain which is so much fun and above all very funny, brilliantly acted by those masters of comedy Windsor Davies and Donald Sinden who make a great pairing in this classic sit-com. Also a wonderful supporting role from Ringo
One of my favourite 80s sitcoms. So easy to watch again and again.
Great actor, great man !
What a lovely trip down memory lane; thankyou. RIP Mr Davies.
A wonderfully presented and heartfelt tribute to a true "one off" character. Blessings.
Many thanks Philip. Much appreciated and glad you enjoyed it.
@@stuviewtv You are very welcome. As a fellow Welshman,I always enjoy watching Windsor Davies. Blessings and peace at this Christmas time.
It ain't half hot mum was really funny!!!
Anybody that has ever served in the British army said that they knew a Sergeant Major like his creation. Brilliant actor and missed hugely!!
Such an enjoyable comedy series that I miss a lot. It reflected the truth of real life as many of the great comedy series did. RIP Windsor
National treasure pure comedy genius
A funny man. A clever man. A memorable man. A memorable voice. From a time when comedy on television was actually funny because it was allowed to be funny. He was a 'lovely boy' (or maybe that really should be 'lovely boyo') himself. I also really enjoyed the series of Never The Twain but of course Windsor will be best remembered for his brilliance in It Ain't Half Hot Mum. Whilst the two Carry On films in which he appeared may not be the best of them, they were all the better for his being in them, for sure.
The best BSM ever👍🏽
What a nice tribute Stu. All you have said is true. A great performer in a less complicated age.
Much appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks for covering Windsor luuverly boy!
Never heard a voice like his and that pigeon chest was unmatched!
I love this guy, good actor, good talent, great warmth about the man
He was also in an episode of Sooty and co "Pulling the wool" he played a Welshman who helps Matthew find farmer Jones . A small part but very memorable especially how he nails the pronunciation of the longest Welsh village.
I'll have to keep an eye out for that one! Thanks
Lovely video, Windsor is my grandfather. Thanks alot for your appreciation of him and his work!
Thank you Alfie for your kind words. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. Your grandfather is one of my all-time comedy heroes.
Wow, Alfie, one of my all time favourites. BSM WIlliams was brilliant as was Never the Twain. He always came across as a really nice Gent.
I just adore these tributes and looking forward to watching the rest in order. Never the twain was a wonderful sitcom, watched it so much as a kid. It wss just a lovely matchup between Sindon & Davies. Excellent channel buddy.
Glad you are enjoying the tribute videos and the channel. That's much appreciated!
@@stuviewtv they are fantastic. I've dipped into a few videos of yours for some time, but I've headed back to the beginning to watch all your work. They're wonderful. 😊
I got to know Windsor quite well when we both worked on a London Palladium panto in 1980. Great chap.
How wonderful to have worked with him!

Great tribute Lovely Boy. Thanks.
I was looking in a bookstore window near Covent Garden and Windsor was doing the same , I said are you Windsor Davis , he just said yes and we chatted , he was very down to earth and friendly, I made him laugh when I told him as kids me and my brother would hide behind the settee when the darleks came on doctor who but when he came on as the Sargent major on IAHHM my dad who had done national service would hide behind the settee ,
The look at me I’m a star keep me away from my fans brigade could learn a lot from Windsor , a great comedy actor sadly missed
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing that wonderful memory.

“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams............
A fabulous actor in an even better fabulous show namely, “ it ain’t arf hot mum” RIP Windsor 🙏🙏🙏
Loved Windsor in never the twain be sadly missed by many
Yeah, I loved Never The Twain. Unfortunately it only had a short run in Australia. Honour Blackman and Zara Nutley were also great in this series.
Wonderful tribute. Very enjoyable.
Thank you very much!
Yeah, I am a bit late to this but thank you very much for this.
He lived more in the middle of france in the same village as Roger Whiitaker not idea if they hung out together.
excellent bloke, excellent upload..............
Great video, the man was special
Windsor Davies had that rarest of things .......funny bones
The voice of Sergeant Major Zero in children's sci-fi programme Terrahawks.
Twas a better time, for TV at least . . . Where are the characters like this today? . . . Hey, if you did one of these about Harry H Corbett, I'd probably watch that!
Brilliant actor👏
Mosle is pronounced mose-ly with the first syllable rhyming with hose. Oswald Mosley was famously (or infamously) the leader of the British Fascist Movement in pre-WW2 Britain.
I think he taught my Uncle at Leek school
windsor davies a great actor RIP
Bugger political correctness, this series was (and still is) a triumph!
SO right Dave. The world is now full of snowflakes!
@@PhreddCrintt I never did like snow, even as a child.
Far too much has been given to the snowflakes.
@@laurencecope7083 Poor baby.
Political correctness? O dear, how sad, never mind.....
