  • After six years living on a homestead in rural Ireland with pigs, ducks, chickens, rabbits and other livestock, I tackle the question which I'm asked more than any other... do I eat them? The answer isn't as black and white as some would like it to be.

If you kill an animal to eat it, you're not cruel. What do you eat to compensate the meat? I want to make some research before becaming vegetarian. I don't eat a lot of meat tho.

Perhaps, but once you include all the pasture land that would be freed up and is currently being used so inefficiently, then maybe not. World arable land right now works out at about 1/3 of an acre per person which would be enough according to the video

"A good man looks after the welfare of his animals" Proverbs 12:10. I feel less weird now, for treating our ducks like pals, and refusing to eat them! A sensible opinion that is practical and adds JOY! Lately, God seems to be drawing our family to a more simpler life-a life I imagine is as close as we can get to how God had things set up in the first place before we came in and messed it all up. I came across your videos looking for advice to help me restore our garden/pond after 11 years of neglect. Your info is so easy to understand, but you also remind us so much of our adult son, whom we miss terribly. His name just happens to be...Noah :) God bless you and keep on keeping on. You are on to the secret to sanity I think brother!

Thank you Daniel, you have my upmost respect. I set up a homestead in West Cork after living abroad in San Francisco for 14 years and Berlin for 3 years. Myself and my husbands apartment was flooded in 2018, hailstones the size of golf balls fell in mid August. Our hand-painted murals, art, photos and possessions were all destroyed in the flood. We left Berlin heartbroken. We started again in West Cork and had chickens, the chickens showed us their personalities and would come into our home and sit on our laps, they were our friends and helped us overcome loneliness in a new setup and cheered us up on difficult days. We stopped eating animals as a result. We are environmentalists like yourself and we are now vegans. We saved two orphan lambs, their farmer didn't vaccinate their mothers and their mothers died painful deaths. We brought the lambs home and bottle fed them, they were both on their last legs and almost died. We've have had the two lambs for a year and 3 months now and they are best friends, they roam free and are far smarter than framers claim. The lambs zoom around our modest set up and they are protective of us, themsleves and "their" property. They are territorial. We call them our "guard dogs". They show us so much personality, they come to their names, they understand many many words, they cheer us up when we are sad about how humans mistreat nature, animals and the environment. They are very bright and compassionate and they make our lives happier. We don't believe in eating or hurting animals but I have great respect for you because of what you've said in this video. You are not vegan but you live by similar beliefs to us. Happy animals, given happy lives, treated with respect and freedom and if at the end the owner eats them after they've had good lives, then I understand that although I don't believe in ending a life myself. We eat plants and have lots of energy and look much younger than we are. We are in our late 30's- early 40's but people think we are in our early 20's.
Any way, thank you for respecting animals and for being a compassionate and wise person. If only the world had more Daniels, it wouldn't look as cruel as it does.

I do hope it is not lost on everyone in the comments section just how privileged every last one of us are. Not only do we have the luxury of a computer but we are so well fed that we can debate what is 'ethical' to eat or not to eat. Having food security is only a dream for a lot of the world.

    • @DJ-uk5mm

I agree. But if much of that world were educated in permaculture techniques and not prevented from having access to land they would be able to have food security. If you take away from a person that means of producing their own food you can effectively enslave them. Food insecurity is a method of slavery and there is no need for it anywhere on this planet. There is huge abundance from the Arctic poles to the Hottest of desertsand everywhere in between. ;-)

This is why I love following you Daniel and your beautiful farm. 💚 The world will never be completely vegan BUT we need to review (and end) the whole factory farming process. It is torturous and horrible for the animals and for the humans working in those industries. It is all based on greed and profits. • @johannesantila5738

Yes. And no. Yes it's based on greed and profit, but factory animal farming is just part of monocrop agriculture which is 100% based on growing crops(plants). There is no separate animal factory farming and crop farming. They are part of the same system. Organic farming is very much part of the same.. scheme. Modern agriculture is totally dictated, not by farmers but the rest, the supermarkets, the fertilizer producers etc. They just want you to eat mostly seeds, some day, nothing but seeds, because that's how they make money and that is the greed of food production system we live in. Long way we have strayed away from hunter-gathering to this technology enriched greedy reality where we are the only species on earth that doesn't even know what to eat.

This particular video is frankly inspiring ….notice one key point: his views on life are LEARNED from life…a bit at a time evolving. All over Europe there are versions of Mossy Bottom…places that have given So much in the past….and have much to give again. • @Silvia-0

@@Silvia-0 Yes I have to admit I have been a vegetarian for 40yrs so I am very biased. For 26 years before that I could only eat meat that was heavily disguised, I was never able to eat flesh obviously carved off the carcass of an animal even as a child. The thought of killing another being has always horrified me. I can't really explain why it took until I was 26 to decide to be a vegetarian.

    • @Silvia-0
      @Silvia-0 2 роки тому +2

@@ziggarillo well, it’s not something our society encourages us to focus on, so I can understand it, especially 40 years ago. I can appreciate the quality of life an animal had before being killed does count for something and if a person is going to eat meat, they should be concerned about how the animals were treated. Unfortunately, being a humane meat eater in a public setting is probably more difficult than being vegetarian or vegan these days. So for convenience sake, it is simply easier to abstain from eating animals.

Daniel, you've given so much food for thought here. Thank you for such a salient, clear point of view on this topic. I've been vegan for many years and have been on a homestead for about 6 years. Vegan/vegetarian homesteaders constantly find ourselves in a state of dissonance when it comes to raising animals that are not meant for consumption. There is this delicate balance between animal use/value and ethical treatment of those animals. You've put some things into perspective for me in this video, and I am most grateful. For now, we've been eating the eggs, like you, and we've had milking goats and now a cow, they produse to us milk, yoghurt, butter, cream etc. And we value those a lot. But we also love our animals very very much, so even tough we think also that it would be ethical to eat our roosters and so on, it's not easy to us. And so many homesteaders talk about that you MUST eat your own meat. You gave so good information and evaluation why you don't NEED to do it, there are nother ways to see things! Thank you! Greetings from Mexico to all the mossy bottom residents and followers. You handle these complex issues quite well. I admire well thought out arguments having studied philosophy and mathematics. In the comment section there is a lot of response, which I expected, but what I didn't expect is the how rational and kind everyone is. For me this is the height of civilization. I find it curious that one of the commentators doesn't think that birds are responsive. Any naturally social animal will have interactive capabilities, I watched a documentary about crows who would mutually help each other remove tracking devices (smile).
As for the overriding question as to whether everybody could live a mossy bottom life style, I think the best we can do is to reduce our carbon footprint as much as we can and learn as much as we can.
Best of luck to all of you out there in comment-land. Jim Oaxaca, Mexico

What a lovely way to live. :)
Have you thought of making silage for winter feed?
A good protein supplement for chickens and ducks is black soldier fly larva. I've seen several videos on UA-cam about them and I'm sure you could make your own compost bin and collection system for them.
I'm lucky to live surrounded by farmers who love all their animals. Some people even have chickens in their back gardens, and I've seen two huge turkeys, just down my street, free ranging.

So interesting Daniel - your open views are so carefully put forward, so you are not saying there is just one way. As long as we respect, and care for our world, then we are doing out best, in our own way. xxx

Now I know what the beautiful rabbits are for! I’m fascinated with your homestead life. Thanks for all great videos. I always learn something! I only have some raised beds in Toronto, but long for space & animals.
I read Moomintroll books to my kids & loved the drawings & aspect of simple pleasures of life, too. 🙂
    Keep up the good work.

Thank you Daniel for sharing your thoughts regarding animals as meat or pets based on your observations, experiences & personal values!!
The older I get the less meat I eat!
I truly love eggs (2 a day in some form 😋), I only purchase wild-caught fish for consumption and most days prefer to eat mostly vegetarian meals! I lived on a lake for almost 30 years & took pride & enjoyment eating what I caught!
I admire you for sooo many reasons & this video was a great example!!

I just discovered your channel and I am binge watching your videos. The information and insight you provide are awesome. Although I’ll never live the dream (too old, too poor, and live in the U.S.), I do enjoy your videos very much! I love Ireland, too, having visited a couple of times over the years. I spent time in Tipperary this past spring.
This video is especially near and dear to my heart because I agree with your philosophy 100%. On that note, have you considered a series on how you utilize the produce from your garden to feed yourself all year? Do you can or somehow preserve your food? Do you cook a lot? I may be in the minority but I think that would be interesting too see. Best wishes.
