    Today on The Highlander Life, I install Butyl acoustic door treatment to deaden the thin and noisy sounding front doors on my 2017 Highlander XLT. This made such a HUGE change to the sound and feel of the door. Let me know if you did this in the comments section below.

    By now I’m sure youve figured out that the opening for the front speakers aren’t traditional 6x9’s. Have you changed the speakers yet? Im curious to see what youve got in there now.

      Hey John, I haven't changed them out yet... So I assume I'll need to use an adapter even for 6x9 right? Have you changed these yourself? Did you find something you like?

      Dan Holt when i first got the highlander, i bought some nice rockford fosgate 6x9s but lo and behold they didnt fit. The cutout is obnoxiously huge. I believe theres a company called Focal that makes speakers for toyota but they were about $300 a piece! After many purchases of adapters from amazon and ebay, I ended up making my own with some 1/8 thick 8x12 plastic sheets i bought on ebay. Turned out nice. I ended up just putting Pioneer 6.5 2 ways instead of the fosgates. Sounds good since I have an amp pushing them. Be forewarned, I have yet to see any adapters that fit our HL.

      Dan Holt the adapters that i made really seem better quality than the prefab ones. I only wish i had a jigsaw but my dremel worked out fine. I put some baffles behind the speakers and sealed just about every nook so the sound is nice and tight. I prob wasted $80-$100 on adapters before i made my own, and frankly, it was more satisfying. Good luck with yours!

    Great video in showing us slowly how to access the metal from the inside of the door. So thank you!
    However, and after much research, I am starting believe that we don’t really need to cover the entire door, floor, trunk/hatch, ceiling with butyl sheets. STEP1- Just evenly spaced small pieces will do to absorb the reverberations and prevent rattle (this way we can use 1-2 boxes for the whole SUV) Then STEP 2- Get the Second Skin treated OPEN foam roll and peel & stick, then the closed Foam on top of that. Then STEP 3- peel and stick the MLV (MASS LOADED VINYL) It may/not come attached to a foam layer of its own, but that REALLY is the sound blocker. The first 2 steps are for sound deadening/dampening and absorption respectively. Also the foam & vinyl are great insulators for heat & cold. Couple that with an IR blocking tints (3M crystaline, Spectra etc) and you have a luxury $1500 upgrade.
    Is it worth it? NO, but will it make your highlander feel like a MayBach? Possibly and you’ll be happier for sure.
    Cons:
    1- Expensive
    2- DIY is 1week 10 hours/day time consuming, effort, cuts sweat & bruises, risk of damage to trim and or electronics etc. The last sentence should be a point on its own
    3- what if you sell/crash the car
    4- wind & outside noise may still leak in the cabin through Windows especially Pano Roofs, so unless it’s a new car, buy OEM weatherstripping. It does not eliminate 100% of sound, but it softens the blow.
    5- Nervous about losing touch with your car, it talks to you through sound much like the body through pain, sound deadening, absorption and blockage is like taking pain killers. They only mask the problem-if there is any.
    I’m still contemplating doing this despite all the CONS. Any advice? I’m in Ontario Canada BTW

      Thanks for your detailed comments here. My concern with any approach that doesn't fully coat the inside is the chance for moisture pockets to form as water gets to the inside of the door. If there are pockets, you could hold water which would cause rust to form on the inside of the door.

    • @retiredrebel
      @retiredrebel 3 роки тому

      @@DansWay Agreed, but that’s why you use the spray. Anti Corrosion, rust-proof (or rust preventive qualities), sound deadening adhesive. It’s basically liquified Mass Loaded Vinyl that you’d spray any ways in all the nooks, crannies, and hard to reach spaces. I believe Second Skin sells theirs in a gallon called ‘Spectrum’ which you’ll need a spray gun to apply evenly as if you’re painting or applying clear coat. Another company sells it in a green can (non smelly) spray bottle (big nozzle to allow the semi-solid particles to evenly leave the can and disperse.)

    Thanks for the assuring ideas. I want to do that improvement to my Hilander. I will wrap some material around the steel bar to help cancel the metal vibration. My speakers vibrate, too. I want to adventure into adding sound deadening on the ceiling because it is very noisy when it rains hard. I still get wind noise through the windows because they are thin. Lexus gets less window noise because they use a thicker window glass. I will be saving for a future Lexus.

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  3 роки тому +2

      All I can say is that it is very difficult to do a true A.B. comparison when you spent an entire day installing the material. I can say the speakers sound a bit different, better. Quieter? That’s difficult to say because for me I seem to hear more road/wind sounds through the glass than through the doors. The improvement to the sound of the doors shutting means as much to me as these other things.

    Leave a 1/4 inch strip of plastic around the edges to allow them to slide without the edges sticking as you positioned it?

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  3 роки тому +2

      That could work, but I'd worry about the possibility of moisture getting stuck between the two causing rust. It doesn't stick that much, so just slide it around and you can get it positioned. Just takes a bit of practice. Thanks for the comment!

      I used a box and a half of the sheets found in the link above for two of the four doors... I used multiple layers on the mid-sections, so you might be able to stretch it out a bit, but you would likely need three boxes total to do all four doors.

    Will spray foam help with sound deadening and be much easier to do?

    • @DansWay
      @DansWay  9 місяців тому +1

      It would add some slight deadening from outside sound, but it doesn’t have the heavy mass that this material adds which helps to stiffen the door-skin. You could try a door and see?

      Dan, After thinking more about it I realized that any foam injection would block the movement of the glass window. It would take a hurculean effort to keep the foam from blocking the vertical movement of the window. We have a Highlander which we love but the road noise is unusually high for a Toyota. Thanks for your quick reply and your videos! Keep up the great work!
