I went over to Panasonic after I upgraded to 4K HDR and my DMP-UB700 has worked flawlessly thus far, had it for over a year now and DVDs, Bluray and 4k discs give me no problems playing on it.
@@happyloaf double check that your disks are perfect. I've found brand new out of the package disks with smudges on them. Get a microfiber cloth good for cleaning glasses and make sure that they are pristine. I had at least one disc that was causing issues that was brand new that I assumed was clean and was not.
I have the same freezing issue with a Sony X800M2 (2 months old), that occurs on some brand new 4K UHD movies. It has just occurred on standard brand new Blu ray and you cannot eject the disc, turn the machine off with remote or on machine. You have to unplug and re-boot, it then plays at exact spot OK. Have connected Sony and await their reply to already opened case on 4K problem. Previously they advised well worn factory reset, clean disc etc. Finally said connect Sony HDMI direct to tv, not via 4K Denon Receiver (Blu ray in and out via monitor ARC).
I just recently bought the Sony UBP-X800M2 4K Ultra HD DVD/Blue Ray player, as well as the Top Gun 4K Ultra HD DVD, both from Best Buy, to see how the player performs. I tried it out with my new TCL 5 series (Roku) TV. I not only noticed a downscaling issue, but what really caught me by surprise, was the terrible sound when playing this DVD. Also, in attempting to troubleshoot the problem, I tried using it to play a much older DVD, which it played in 480p, and in stereo. (When I checked it with the Display button on the remote). When I played that same DVD in a Sony Blue Ray player that I bought back in 2015, it played the same DVD in 1080p, and in 5.1 Dolby surround sound! (Although the older Sony player is unable to play the Top Gun 4K Ultra HD DVD). I don't get it? Anyone have any answers as to why this would be? Or (like with the UBP-X700) is it just another common problem with this particular unit?
And I noticed that I can't get it to power on until I unplug it from the power cord plug it back in and then it will come on what is the deal with that
I have this player and anytime I put a 4k disk in it, it says “unable to play disc” or “no disk in player”. This has happened with multiple disks that are 4k or just Blu-ray
I had the x800 and it froze twice and I took it back right away. I had read about the issue but still wanted to try it out. Fail...I had to unplug the power to get it to work. End up getting a LG 4K player that does DV. Th LG Player has been great and only had a problem with one 4K disc- RP1.
Try to turn off the 4K upscale function in the menu it worked for me. Before that I had also a lot of freezes so I played around with some settings and turned off that 4K upscale function. Since then for me the problem was gone.
Mine froze the first day I had it and I tried to reset player and it wouldn’t even turn back on. Needless to say I returned it and bought the Panasonic UB-820 that has worked flawlessly.
I´ve heard that the freezing issue is caused by the player dynamically updating Bluray/DVD-info from the internet and that you can go to the Bluray/DVD settings>BD Internet Connection and select 'Do not allow', - this user claimed he haven't had any trouble after doing this..
It could be the layer change where it freezes? I had an issue with it freezing on the disc Ex Machina, however I found it was an issue with the disc itself, I needed to get a replacement disc. I have this same player and it rarely freezes, when it does, cleaning the disc seems to fix it. One known issue with the player is that the network settings get wiped. Apparently there is a bug in the software related to the APPS. When the apps are updated it can wipe your network settings. I never use the apps, and stopped doing those updates and I don't have the problem anymore. One of the first things I did when getting this player was change the Dolby Vision settings. Once it is set you don't have to go into them again. I am pretty happy with the player.
Have the player also, you can check in display (button) when it uses Dolby vision. If I put a 4K disc with HDR or DV on it, it shows in the output display. When I put a regular DVD in, DV isn’t used when I check the display output.
The latest update for Sony X800 is M36.R.0338. Not seen any videos or reviews about it. Would you recommend downloading it? Could you do a video to see the improvements.

2015 seems to be the point Sony's Blu-ray models took a nosedive in regards to reliability. So many stacked up for parts/repair on eBay already. A trend that's continued into their UHD models. I still use a couple of their old DVP-S7000s for DVD fed into an outboard video processor. Despite being 23 years old, they still function reliably, playing disc after disc. Even one with over 10k laser hours.
Mine has been freezing up and I’m under warranty, they asked for the receipt and I sent it to them and they are saying it’s not good enough. They need some mysterious code on the receipt that’s missing so they won’t fix it.
It might be a over heating issue , maybe its similar to the ps4 over heating issue , maybe they need to use better quility thermal compound and leave the black top cover off so it has airflow through the vent holes
I just got the Sony UBP X800m2 today and it has problems, when I resume playback on a 4K disk I select YES and it just gives me a black screen and to fix it I have to first eject the disc and put it back in than it works. also the audio sound drops out when playing a 4K Blu-ray movie disc.
Yea, My x800 just froze on John wick 2 4k. Can't do anything with it. It won't even shut off, eject disc, so now I have to get to the power strip behind the entertainment center to unplug it and plug it back in. Which is a real pain in the A**. I'm not sure if this will even work. The entertainment center is a heavy beast to move from the wall.
I have an extension cord that has a power switch, I have it located on the floor next to my entertainment center so that I can kill the power without the need to dive into the cable jungle behind the center.
Yes I have and it seems to work perfectly. I use an audioquest vodka cable rated at 18g and audioquest now makes 48Gbps bandwidth hdmi cables capable of 8K and 10K passthrough.
Not sure if this is still happening but I too experienced the same thing with my LG UBK90. Bought the player on sale and it sat unused and the warranty expired. The issue seems tied to triple layer 100GB disks during the switch to the third layer. Movies such as Saving Private Ryan, Ready Player One, Gladiator etc. You can look for the layers on the inner disk ring. You are correct when it happens on a first play through from the beginning if you skip to the problem area it will play fine. Solution? Ditch Sony and LG and buy a Panasonic 820. They don't have any of these issues.
I have the X800M2 and had issues with skipping, freezing and now constant video glitches (think a dirty NES cart where various areas are glitching out). Only had it for 14 months and it needs to be replaced/fixed.
I've had my X800M2 for about 3 months. Have had no issues at all so far playing any 4K discs. However I have had 2 standard Bluray discs (Layer Cake and Star Trek First Contact) freeze at the point of layer change (c. 1h 10m elapsed time), no longer have the box I'm afraid. It is notable that home burned content and other discs which didn't work properly in my previous (Sony blu ray player) work fine on my X800.
Thanks for the info about this issue with this player, I wasn't aware of this. BUT, got to say, love your dog just randomly appearing at just under the 3:00 mark, had to replay it to make sure what I think I saw, and at the end also, lol.
I recently bought this player and am having lip sync issues playing regular DVD's and streaming Netflix. Plugging in my old fire stick plays Netflix flawlessly.
This why I bought a Xbox One X...no problem with freezing...and it has Dolby Atmos and Vision...which is a plus for Netflix which has both on their streaming network...
Currently searching for info on my problem which might be related. I got the UBP-X800M2 (not the 700) and after two years it suddenly won't read a single blu-ray or UltraHD disc. Only DVDs. It's been sitting in the same spot since purchase, and only sporadically used (you prolly know with all streaming services nowadays). Anyone else with a similar problem?
This same thing happened to me. Played a DVD last night. Also CDs. But no blu-ray or UltraHD disc, they just read "no disk" or say there's an issue. I've tried many different blu-ray disks to rule out the disks, but it is clearly an issue with the player. Going to take it apart and clean the head. See if i get lucky... 🤷
@@mrcassioo Didn't seem to help. ☹️ Called Sony and they were shockingly unhelpful too. They essentially blamed "the disk" (despite my attempts to explain that it will not play ANY blu ray disc) with basically no troubleshooting. Very frustrating. Mine is about a year out of warranty though, so maybe you will have better luck 🤞
@@krjohnson29 Aww, that's too bad. Really appreciate the reply tho! I better see if I can work some magic over here with my "warranty". Basically I have to send it in, factory reset, pay for shipping myself and pray to some higher power they end up deciding this fault isn't on me. I've always liked Sony for the quality of their products, but based on how common this issue seem to be, and their reluctance to even listen, I guess our focus should shift over to the competitors now. Thanks again!
@@mrcassioo Looks like UA-cam deleted my last comment? (Maybe thought it was commercial content...) I'll try again using more general terms: Basically, I was able to repair mine using the service manual for the x800, which I found posted online. It was pretty simple, just involved replacing the disc drive (most likely the Blu ray laser went bad). You can easily find the parts online, though I couldn't find them at an "official" retailer.
I had issues with the Samsung UBDK8500.. it began freezing like you mentioned here with the Sony then just refused to output a picture signal.. I had to switch the player off at the wall and back on again for me to retrieve the disc.. it would not stop or power down by the remote. It just went kaput overnight.. so i sold that player for spare parts and opted for this Sony UDPX700 and after a month or this also started freezing 4k discs!!!.. dvds and blu ray playback was fine it just had issues randomly playing 4ks fine on one evening then freezing.. it was so random that I didnt quite know what to do.. so i boxed it back up and purchased a region free Oppo UDP 203 which is pretty amazing but just very recently films have started to freeze on this player. I was thinking I must be jinxed right?.. i discinnected everything, ran a few cleaning discs through (which may or may not work) and there simply is no explanation. I have a UHD tv. Check. I have the compatible UHD lead. Check. Everything worked before and if I didnt have the right equipment 4k discs wouldnt play from the very start of set up right? Am I going insane here?. Should it really be this stressful owning a 4k player?.. I still cant come to any conclusion other than perhaps 4k players are not really built and have been tested. If it was the players issue then surely Dvds and blu rays wouldnt playback also?.. mmm. Still unsure that the source outputting at 2160p can sustain itself and be consistent at playing back 4k discs?. That is my theory but for those who may have the answer to this crisis then I would be grateful for any advise or solution?. Thank you ;)
@@danielgarcia21 same iam not sure whats going on, surely it cant be compatability issues. I noticed also that the Sony player which is (region 2) dosent register some 4k discs, displays as either no disc or reads them as an mp3 file but my oppo plays em fine. Other times its a stop and start process for the player to playback the disc, its frustrating to say the least, theres never any issues with blu ray and dvd disc playback
@@ethanberry9846 probably. Before the Panny I had a Samsung 9500 4K player, no issues with freezing but one movie just died completely. It was Blade Runner 2049 4K. No scratches nor visible damage. Bought the Panny and the movie wasn't able to play in it either. So I bought a replacement. Now I'm suffering from pixelation in a lot of my 4Ks and movies that completely stopped working even when they were fine the last time I put them in the player. So weird.
@@danielgarcia21 have you tried using lens cleaner discs? I just dont think the players are much good and we spend alot of money on the upgrades. Annoying, I wonder if the PS5 will get any reports of playback issues. We will see
I suggest with Sony x700 4k player, turn off 4k upscaling in setup and turn to video Cinema comparison mode. I've had no freezing so far with this model.
For whatever reason, this player isn't displaying my 4k disks on my 4k monitor anymore. I worked fine when I bought it, but now it only plays blu rays. Could it be a firmware update thats left my (older) Acer predator monitor unrecognized by the player? Or could it be a problem with the player itself?
Unfortunately, my x800mk2 has the same freezing problems as in the older machines. And it doesn't only happen with 4K BD, but also with MC SACD. After approx half an hour audio and video start flickering. It is as if the handshake between the different machines in the chain become unstable. Really annoying. I will be trying the 4k upscaling off option. I have a Bravia A9 so that can take care of the upscaling too.
Sony now officially manufactures garbage and tells you to "clean your disk with a dry soft cloth", and "unplug and wait for 30 seconds" as a remedy. I purchased this UBP-X800 YESTERDAY and it won't play ANY DISK I HAVE without freezing up. But my old Blu-ray player plays them all just fine. They manufacture garbage, and instead of issuing a recall, they tell us to clean our disc with a soft dry cloth. I have been a "Sony only" customer for years... but not any more. For the last 12 years or so, I've been buying new TV's and players about every 2 years-- always Sony. Never again!! I won't recommend their garbage to any of my friends and family. EVER. I would say "goodbye", but its's actually..... Good riddance.

My player keeps resetting itself, completely wiping my internet settings and returning some of my audio and video settings to their default values. I'm on my second one and both have done this.

Yeah, I was told to check the firmware update and I did and it did not help. I'm going to get a better HDMI cable for one, and then I'm going to do what another person suggested on here and check my Blueray/DVD settings. I've got two days to make a decision whether or not to return this player, which I don't like, because other than the freezing everything is great.
when I first purchased my UBP X-1000 started freezing with all Blue ray or 4K disks so I figured I had to return it. I remodel my living room and forgot about it . After a year I installed my player back again and keep having the same, I watch a few videos and found out what the real problem is , I fix it by turning off the HDR upscaling while playing Blue ray or 4K
I've got the X800 and have had similar issues. I've turned off the 4k upscale function as per this thread and others. Will see if it makes a difference. I'd probably only switch the upscale option on for dvds tbh. FYI Sonys guarantees are worthless. Me and tons of others have had our repairs under warranty rejected for our various Sony products. They should be reported
My Sony UBP-X700 stopped playing bluray disks. It will play DVD though. Bummer i payed some nice coin $$ for this player.. I did register it jst cant find damn receipt.
That Is Only For Warner Bros Disc ! Even When I Popped In Ready Player One,I Had To Manually Change It To Dolby Atmos,The Same Case With Justice League ! But,I Love The UBP X-700 !
Love your dog, probably waiting for you to play some Lassie movies. I have recently purchased this player and expecting delivery later today. Hope the issue is now resolved.
I have the X-700 and have had problems with some of the Fast & Furious films as well as the Batman films. My Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones 4K also froze a lot. I’ll gladly buy a new player of it means not having to deal with this anymore.
I had an issue on Disc 2 of Two Towers 4K, however after doing some research, i found the spot the player was having issues with where it would freeze then play was the layer change and seems to be a problem for a bunch of players.
Cheap Sanyo 4K players played triple layer reliably because they were made when design, quality of parts and quality control were excellent. That time is in the past, players today won't last as we're being forced into streaming.
X800 has done it on and off since I’ve owned it. I was going to get an 800m2 but I see a lot of reviews saying the same thing. Panasonic is getting my money next. And everything else I have is made by Sony...
The freezing issue is caused by the player dynamically updating Bluray/DVD info from the internet. Go to Bluray/DVD settings>BD Internet Connection and select 'Do not allow'. I haven't had any trouble since. Don't care about d'loaded bluray info anyway.
I've only had my Sony UDP700 for almost 2 weeks and prior to that I had another Sony and they both have freezing issues, and I've only got 2 days left to decide if I'm going to have to return this one. The update from 2019 was supposedly fixed in my player that I bought but it doesn't solve the problem and I am playing just standard Blu-ray. I read an article yesterday similar to what you mention. Thanks! I'll try this.
@@manuelzamudio5917 , I did but it did not work for my player. I had to end up getting a different brand of player. But thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

This format is so undercooked it seems. I have playback issues with some discs on my LG player and video/audio sync problems with some. I didn't experience such things with DVD or Blu-ray but all the issues in the world with this 4K format. I think they really launched it pre-maturely. I hope we'll get working players in the future.
too many layers chunked on a disc, sony should know this and thus manufacture higher quality player. if doubled-layer, normally, ''may trigger slight pause'', imagine how a poorly-made player playing a disc with more than 2 layers
Let me say that almost EVERY player I've ever owned from DVD, to Bluray with the exception of one and only one froze at on at least ONE disc if not more! The exception? A Philips DVD player! Sony freezes, Pioneer freezes, LG freezes, Toshiba freezes, lol! I have a Pioneer Elite that still froze after over half a dozen firmware upgrades, lol. You'd think that manufacturers could coordinate their firmware with the discs they're supposed to play. But, as you know, DISC formats are always making CHANGES that end up baffling the player's firmware. HEY! DEVELOP ONE STANDARD and STICK TO IT, for god's sake. Endless revisions and reformatting are just BAD for player owners. And even Sony which produces discs can't get it right! Can't even coordinate between their movie division and their equipment, how dysfunctional is that. Stop trying to RUSH the next great NEW thing to the market, why don't you. Jeeeesh!

Hell, I wish I have freezes with this product. At least I could get my disc back. Bought it yesterday and played it once. Today, no power/boot despite performing the power cycle troubleshoot guide. I'm willing to bet that both issues stem from hardware. Despite being off (with the fast boot & networks disabled) all night, I noticed that the AC adapter was warmer than what it should have been since it was off for over 12 hours and is rather a low output (12V 1.5A). So something kept drawing power. Which could be a mountain of things. I would dive into a thorough inspection but since it's brand new, it'll serve as a paperweight at the store when I return it. Kinda disgusted with Sony products lately. Damn shame too.
I own this too, got it only because it's cheaper & I don't use it that much, I use it with a cheap TCL 4K TV, freezers about 4% of the time including the apps over 6 months.

It won't even shut off, eject disc, so now I have to get to the power strip behind the entertainment center to unplug it and plug it back in. Which is a real pain in the A**. I'm not sure if this will even work. The entertainment center is a heavy beast to move from the wall.
Did you make any progress?! I can't turn it off or see anything on the input
I have an extension cord that has a power switch, I have it located on the floor next to my entertainment center so that I can kill the power without the need to dive into the cable jungle behind the center.
I was going to buy this but so many people reported the freezing in reviews, it must be a huge percentage of the players doing it
Have you tried using a high quality 18GB per second HDMI cable?
Yes I have and it seems to work perfectly. I use an audioquest vodka cable rated at 18g and audioquest now makes 48Gbps bandwidth hdmi cables capable of 8K and 10K passthrough.
@@tacticalAV I’m about ready to buy a Sony UBP X800M2 and it will be my first time using 4K.
why use a product that does not function correctly? mine just won‘t play 4k, says no disc.xbox plays the disc
Currently I cannot see anything on the input, AND I can't turn off the player 😐.. Any advice which doesn't involve burning or returning
Hit it with a hammer
The freezing is so upsetting
I have the 800 version hate that it reset once a week
it happens to me on a brand new zero finger print 4k blu ray and it's the first one i've put in that day.
I have the X800M2 and had issues with skipping, freezing and now constant video glitches (think a dirty NES cart where various areas are glitching out). Only had it for 14 months and it needs to be replaced/fixed.
Do the Netflix app allows for native Atmos thur your reciever?
what about playing 4k hdr files through usb?does it even freeze in usb playback
Usb playback was the first time i had the black-screen freeze. Since then its happened to discs as well and the player is only 3 days old
I've had my X800M2 for about 3 months.
I have one I bought at Walmart, Sony uhd blu ray, I have no problems from it after I turned on the option in audio settings secondary audio channel
I just got mine and right from the get go the audio will cut out for a second every 10 minutes or so.
I recently bought this player and am having lip sync issues playing regular DVD's and streaming Netflix. Plugging in my old fire stick plays Netflix flawlessly.
I got a panosonic 820 from best buy plays dvds like blu rays 450$
This why I bought a Xbox One X...no problem with freezing...and it has Dolby Atmos and Vision...which is a plus for Netflix which has both on their streaming network...
No Dolby vision for disk though, just streaming
cleaning the disk is some complete BS its a great Blu-Ray player but when it comes to 4K blu-rays witch is what we all bought it for its not reliable.
@@krjohnson29 Would appreciate some feedback if you succeed! I’m still sort of within warranty (if I can prove the problem isn’t caused by me).
@@mrcassioo Didn't seem to help. ☹️
Called Sony and they were shockingly unhelpful too.
(Maybe thought it was commercial content...) I'll try again using more general terms:
Basically, I was able to repair mine using the service manual for the x800, which I found posted online.
Thank you ;)
Hi have the same issue with my Panasonic UB820.
We will see
@@ethanberry9846 I actually open the player and cleaned the laser with a cotton swab. Nothing changed.
I suggest with Sony x700 4k player, turn off 4k upscaling in setup and turn to video Cinema comparison mode. I've had no freezing so far with this model.
After my player froze, it stopped playing 4k discs. Literally gives me an "unplayable" disc.

Same here. Mine just reset itself the other day and I had to re-add all my apps.

Anyone figure out this issue yet? It’s annoying.
I know I’m writing this four years after you made this video but I’ve got this model, it’s probably a newer one and I’ve had zero issues.
that you can force dv is a +
I've got the X800 and have had similar issues.

Having same issue with Sony x-800 m2. Plays to about 60 minutes. Will be returning.

I saw this player at Bestbuy not bad for the price . I could live with it but get a warranty. And no IMAX update for us that some bull .
This was happening with my Sony UBP-X800M2
I haven't heard of any 4K UHD players that don't have issues, what a sad state of affairs.
I'm more than happy with Blu-Ray. 👍
too many layers chunked on a disc, sony should know this and thus manufacture higher quality player. if doubled-layer, normally, ''may trigger slight pause'', imagine how a poorly-made player playing a disc with more than 2 layers
Jeeeesh!
Toy Story 4 4K worked fine!!

Its also a difference in price between oppo and sony.
Never gone with 4K, normal blu ray is superb. I said 4K would die before these problems are solved and looks like that is going to happen. Not a fan of dodgy home cinema. Overpriced and unreliable.
