    UV is at the end of OUR spectrum, not the whole EM wave spectrum. Just saying; little things like that stand out.
    Didn't know caribou could see UV.

      I thought of it as the end of the spectrum that makes it through the atmosphere, the atmosphere blocks the other types of radiation beyond UV and beneath IR.

      Yeah their lifespan are only 19-20 so they actually die old fast than man when turned to 20

    I wish I could have a life as adventurous as hers where you could just casually take photos of wolves close-up while not fretting at all.

    It is a very neat concept, but, wolves are not ambush predators and need the caribou to run. Wolves expose themselves to their prey.

      False. They are ambush predators. They cant get close enough to their prey to "ambush" them.

    I'm a bit confused. UV is not reflected when the sun is below the horizon. UV is not reflected by the forest or other vegetation. So the only time the wolves are so "UV-visible" is in daylight, out in the open, on snow. Except for the rare white wolf, in that situation they are always very visible. So, where's the advantage?

    • @ritvikjaru
      @ritvikjaru 7 років тому +2

      The Advantage is as clear as Black and White!
      Image if some caribou have bad eyesight like some humans do (I, for example have astigmatism), they would easily miss the wolves if it was right in front of them. However, they stick out like a black mass, and are much easier to spot.
      Also, If the moon is out at night, I wonder if reflects UV light, if so the trait would be useful at night as well.

    • @Dencake
      @Dencake 7 років тому

      The forest/other vegetation should not block out all light and UV, so wolves should still appear clearer near trees.

    How can they prove that the caribou see UV light? I'm not saying they can't but how can any scientist prove this?

    • @RigorOriginal
      @RigorOriginal 8 років тому +14

      +Steve I think it has to do with the density of the individual Cones in an eyes Retina (which has millions of cones). Our eyes for example will only detect three main colors which is Red, Green and Blue and each color is actually a Wave form that vary in Wavelength, our cones will detect the different wavelengths through different cones and it is dependent on the density of a cone for which wavelength it will detect.
      (I'm guessing here) I think the denser the cones, the shorter the wavelength that can be detected and scientists will be able to get the density of the cone by looking under the microscope and depending on the density, they'll match it up with a wavelength.
      Look up "Cones in the eye" and "Electromagnetic spectrum" if you want to get the proper facts and formal definitions :)

      +Steve Do some research! I'm sure biologists have done a ton of work on this! :)

    • @109Rage
      @109Rage 7 років тому +7

      Fun Fact: Human retinas can also see UV light. We have three cone cell types for Red, Green and Blue, but our "Blue" cones can also see some UV. The reason we can't see this extra UV is because the lens inside our eye blocks this UV light. People that have their lens removed will see the world in brighter blues from the extra UV, but I imagine this might also cause damage to your retinas over the long term.

      @@longshot3120 Are non-vegans vicious killing machines? We both eat meat. Wolves are not vicious killing machines, because most of us eat meat as much as they do. Humans are much more cruel than any other animal, have you seen our mass production farms? How many animals die prematurely and live in cages? I'm not personally vegetarian, but when you're calling wolves this it makes me quite annoyed.

      it has to do with the types of rods and cones found in the back of their eyes.
      "Their cornea lets ultraviolet light pass into the eye. They don't have specialized rods or cones like other animals, but their normal cells respond to low intensity stimulation."

    I wonder why they developed UV vision over IR vision, IR would work at night too, as anything hot would radiate its own IR, and wolves are pretty hot compared to snow.

    • @KsanterX
      @KsanterX 7 років тому +3

      They didn't develop anything. It's just survived those who can see in UV.

    • @Gwyrddu
      @Gwyrddu 7 років тому +2

      And you would be seeing this IR from eyeballs that were also hot. So you end up with a lot of interference from your detection system.

    “Snow reflect ultra violet light”
    Then they say...
    “Objects that reflects UV light will be white. Objects that absorb light will be black.”
    Wait, I just realized they didn’t mean the snow will look violet(purple) in the beginning. They just meant UV.
    UV = ultra violet.
