Damn right it did!
*Absolutely.*

Which books do you recommend? Also which books have the fall of Cadia?
No power armor, no superhuman habilities, no bolters. Only lasguns, bayonets and their faith in the emperor. The imperial guard are the really badasses of WH40k
All the guard is badasses. Its just that Cadia troops were in a league all unto themselves. They literally were the primary defense for over 10000 years against Chaos forces from the Eye of Terror one guardsman from Cadia is worth more then dozens of guardsman from other sectors. Cadia has fallen and yet the Guard didn't break until long after the world was destroyed and Abbaddon had them scattered across the galaxy and into the hands of the other most badass army in Imperium Space the Ultra Marines. Abbaddon is royally screwed. He just doesn't know it yet.
"The Adeptus Astarte's are the defenders of humanity, the Imperial Guard ARE humanity."
When one is recruited into the Imperial Guard, you will be issued your Lasgun, standard body armour, a copy of the Guardsman's Uplifting Primer and a wheel barrow to carry around your gigantic, solid adamantium balls, because the guard are not brave, they are heroic, valiant to the last
"...and he has held the line for ten thousand years."
AND several tens of thousands of Leman Russ tanks,
AND Several tens of thousands of fire support and mobile artillery bastions,
AND several thousand Baneblades,
AND Several thousand Imperial Knights,
AND A few orders of the Adeptus Soroitas. Namely; the Order of the Ebon Chalice and the Order of the Bloody Rose,
AND several Astartes chapters inculding; Novamarines, Reclaimers, Excoriators, Cerulean Guard, Iron Hands, Angels of Absolution, Black Consuls, Watchguards, Relictors... Hell even the Legion of the Damned and Imperial Fists showed up to destroy the assaulting chaos forces.
AND the entirety of Legio Ignatum, Legio Metalica and Legio Gryphonicus of the Legion Titanicus (founded before the Age of the Imperium, during the Age of Strife. Some of their Titans were blessed by the emperor himself and served during the Great Crusade - INCLUDING the defence of Terra itself during the Horus Heresy),
AND the vast, VAST force of battleships, battlecruisers, cruisers, frigates, destroyers, Orbital weaponry, mass conveyors and system monitors in orbit from Battlefleets; Agripinaa
, Cadia, Coronus, Gothic, Scarus,
AND the PHALANX star fortress..
Not to mention the Eldar that helped out a few imperial forces by fighting alongside them , and then activating the webway gate on ice moon of Klaisus for them to escape - and ultimately playing a hand in the resurrection of Roboute Guilliman on Macragge.
STILL doesn't lessen their achievements though. They were not under equipped with "Only lasguns, bayonets and their faith in the emperor" - Superior tactics, strategy, and sheer overwhelming sacrifices and tenacity is what made the 13th black crusade forced to break the planet itself to deal with them. Remember Cadia's fall honestly, for what it was. To say they had less, or little to work with cheapens the enemies victory, and portrays them as a lesser threat.
Cadia's final defeat was their greatest victory. The martyrdom from this driving THE ENTIRE REST OF THE IMPERIUM to action is Abaddon's biggest mistake. I'm sure the Adeptus Soroitas, the Guard, the SM legions will all make this crusade pay dearly. Imagine when the Space Wolves on Fenris get wind of this - (EDITED) - Considering how they fought the Imperium itself to save the lives of loyal guardsmen and civilians, literally fighting the Grey Knights and Inquisition to a stalemate to save the defenders of Armageddon from imperial cleansing, even under threat of being declared heretics and being purged. Now picture that urge to protect normal humans after hearing about this.... Space Wolves were the Legion designed and trained as the one to be able to kill Astartes traitors. Even before the Horus Heresy. And are arguably the best melee combatants and shock assualt force in the whole Imperium of Man... And their proximity to Cadia puts them in perfect position for a counter attack... Hopefully Guilliman remembers serving beside them during the great crusade and puts them to good use - OR that Russ himself makes a return and joins in on the fun with his legion and his brother.
"If a creature like Abaddon is still capable of experiencing even a tinge of fear, then he must be haunted by the fact that in destroying Cadia, he has added a trillion fallen saints to the highest pantheon of the Imperium"

Y'know the thing about cadia breaking before the guard doing so is why I like the Imperial Guard more than the Space Marines. The IG is just a bunch of dudes, just some dudes with some ok-ish weaponry and even so when the going gets tough they go and either win or just hold ground. It's pretty easy to be super human with the best equipment that there is avaliable and fight a alien or a demon but to do so with just being a normal person? That's some tough shit.
@RubikonSFM But they still were 70% SM, those dudes are different than Bob who only has a lasgun and some luck. A almost blood raven killing a demon lord is one thing but a normal human, a honest to god normal human is something else.
@RubikonSFM I know I know. But still, what I want to say is that I preffer a normal dude over one that has all the cards in his favor.
There is a quote from the book Storm of Iron I can't perfectly remember but it's along the lines of the few space marines that are there call the guardsman brave. The Space marine says they know no fear so they can't be brave. Never do they walk into a situation and believe they can lose He picks up a stick and tells the man to break it. He does and now break the two pieces together. He once again does until he can't. The Space Marine tells the captains that the sticks are the guardsman, together an unbreakable force the likes of which too many chapters forget IS the backbone of the Imperium.

Again and again they tried.
Tried to lay low the gate and the guard.
Again and again they held their ground.
Eventually, the despoiler saw that to claim victory, the guard must have no ground to give.
And so the fortress fell from the sky, and the world broke; its defenders destroyed.
But the terror the black legion sought to bestow, was rejected.
Even as the cicatrix maledictum opened, cadians fought with renewed vigour. Even though their home world died, they still survive, fight and claim new victories.
The spirit of cadia lives on in the cadians.

I remember being in a room full of 40K fans and we were talking about Cadia, and one guy piped up and said something along the lines of “what if they did break before the planet? Like how do we know it’s actually true? Most people didn’t actually see Cadia in its final moments, and the ones who did are super dead! So it could be one of the Inperiums many lies” and everyone in the room just turned their heads towards him and gave him the type of death stare you’d expect to see from someone who’s dog you killed before all yelling “HERESY!!!”
It was glorious!
Took failbadon the harmless thirteen tries to take a single world then he just rage broke it. I bet Horus would be laughing at his traitorous son if his soul had survived the Emperor's wrath.
That's the funniest part, really. He just fucking smashed a Blackstone Fortress into the planet because he just can't take it in both sense of the word!
From what I saw of sane Horus in the Horus Heresy books, he’d be absolutely livid about every tactic Abbadon used, especially the way he wasted the Will of eternity
What do you expect from a guy that made a giant fuck-off starship which largely consisted of a ridiculously huge fuck-off deathstar laser in a setting that has cyclonic torpedoes, virus bombs, and vortex bombs capable of being carried by light cruisers and escorts. Nevermind the fact that the Planet Killer got destroyed, and just like Big E Palpatine, the armless made another one. Abaddon is always propped up by GW to be a main antagonist but is so comically evil (and incompetant) to ever again be taken seriously. Think about how much better it would be to have one or two Black crusades since the heresy and instead of being a farce, the crusades caused such extreme damage that parts of the Imperium are still trying to rebuild thousands of years later.

What do I ask of my officers? Merely that they do their duty with fire in their bellies and a prayer on their lips - Lord Castellan Ursarkar E. Creed
The guardsmen held the line because they were beyond simple soldiers. They were and idea, the idea that mankind will not go without a fight, that we will not run away from battle. They stood as a light in the darkness, they held the line
till the end and if the planet would have not been broken they would have still stood till today. Vengeance for Cadia !
And that defiance spurs on the Imperium, from Valhalla, to Catachan, to Armageddon, and Krieg. Reaching the far flung ears of even the ghosts of the Tanith first and only. To the well disciplined Mordian Iron guard, and the hell jumpers of the Elysian droptroops. Every fighting soldier of the Imperium has not been shamed or broken by this lose, no. They were emboldened, a great world of greater people was lost, our people. In their final moments they did not go quietly, they shouted and fired until they were consumed by the flames. A great blaze set of by the embers of Cadia is in each person heart, so long as humanity stands, we will stand definitely and spit in the face of death, for even if only one guardsman stands at the gates of terra, should even the might of the adeptas custodies be overcome, that one man will stand and fight for vengeance, the planet broke before the guard- and the guard has remained unbroken for 10,000.

Theres a poem by a poet called Dylan Thomas called Do not go gentle into that good night and it literally seems like it was written for warhammer 40k
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
By the Emperor, that last 5 minutes had me shaking.

Is this normal to shed tears over something that never existed? Those heroic acts of Cadia, all those people, they are just imaginary toy soldiers. And yet I cry. For real. Why is that so? I never even was that big of a fan for WH40k, and yet i cry. Something is just MOVING inside of me when i hear that the planet broke before the guard did. I don't know why. It's concerning me. And yet I cry. Is this because of the way Templin Institute tells this story? Why do I cry, like those were my own compatriots diyng in unjust war? Why? Why am I crying?
Brother it is normal to shed tears from the billions lost in the fight against Chaos. But now we must be strong for the imperium, for the Emperor and for Cadia. The traitors will suffer a thousand deaths for every loyal man, woman and child lost on Cadia. The Emperor protects, Cadia stands, and the planet broke before the guard.

If we do ever expand to other star system and meet an alien race that wanted nothing but our destruction, I hope we would be as brave as these Cadian Guardsmen. I hope it would bring sheer terror into their hearts, realizing we are not a race that cower at the face of total annihilation, but spits and laughs at it. Then brutally fights backs with the spirits of all those lost and filled with vengeance.

Every time I come back to this video, I tear up a little when that final sentence is said "The planet broke before the guard"
"The planet broke before the guard" is one of the most hauntingly beautiful and inspiring things ive ever heard
I love the deeper meaning to the phrase "The planet broke before the Guard".
It signifies to the Ruinous powers that humanity will have to be exterminated before they'll lose, as they won't stop fighting before then.
This means Chaos only wins if it can maintain the status quo. No humanity means no sustenance; and Imperium winning (theoretically) could be similar. Only the middle ground is a victory for the Gods.
When it's easier to break the ground under the defender's feet than it is to break the defenders themselves, you know you're up against serious badassess.
It's okay to cry friends, even the emperor, upon hearing the bell that signals the loss of an imperial hero, sheds a single tear.
