Explain to me how Will Arnett not only didn't win the best voiceover acting Emmy for this episode, but wasn't even NOMINATED.

It's honestly kind of iconic that Bojack never won an Emmy, considering how much fun the show makes of the whole award show scene

"Yes, yes, I see you. Get in."
I'm a little bummed you guys figured out the ICU thing so early since it's such a gut punch, but I'm not surprised!

As a person, who also figured it out right away it actually turn this episode in classic Hitchcock's quote* about suspense. I was on the edge of my seat, hoping that Bojack would survive the reveal. So ending positively surprised me.
*"The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it […] In these conditions this same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: “You shouldn’t be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!"

Thankfully, not being a native english speaker, i didn't react to ICU at all when they said it (watched with the original english voices obviously, and while i know the meaning of ICU, i'm not used to it so it didn't occur at all for me)

      Dramatic irony

The "I see you" monologue has to be my favourite part of this episode because of how many times it recontextualizes that same sentence to find some sort of meaning or underlying intent behind it only for it to mean absolutely nothing. The essence of storytelling is perspective.

I think this episode is supposed to be the opposite of the seahorse episode in that instead of an episode completely without dialog, it's an entire episode with only one person's monolog

“My mother is dead and everything is worse now” really, really hits different after you lose a close family member for the first time, especially if you had a rocky relationship with them. The first time I watched this episode it was before my father died, so it didn’t hit _as_ hard, but it clearly made an impact because the day he died that line was swirling around in my head. It’s extremely accurate, and hits so much harder now.

A friend of mine expressed confusion over why his wife grieved the loss of her alcoholic mother with whom she had a terrible relationship, and I think this episode scratches the surface of that. It also makes me wonder what real trauma Bojack’s writing team had to pull from in order to show us what it’s like. 😢

I know it likely was just "ICU" but Beatrice was pretty much blind at that point I wonder if she just did say I see you, maybe to bojack, maybe to some imaginary or spiritual version of crackerjack or her mother coming to meet her.

  • @melkaman8200

This was a great episode! And I have to say, when Bojack said "I'm your son, all I had was you," you heard Will Arnett's voice crack, and I don't think that was acting. He, as I'm sure most actors do, tapped into some pain he was feeling. Not necessarily at his own mother, but someone important to him. I know someone whose mother was basically a clone of Beatrice, and yeah, the hurt that Will Arnett put into that scene felt very, very raw. But, as the show does, they immediately whiplash us from terrible sadness to zany laugh-out-loud humor in the same breath! And kudos to the lizards for letting him get all of that out of his system.

41:58 question, under spoiler, only for people who saw the whole show, obviously.
Did this episode actually spoil any part of the final, it's theme or messages as they speculating? Cause, I feel like it didn't, really.

      No imo.
There are conversations between Bojack and Diane in the first two seasons about how life keeps going after your best and worst days, the show is very consistent and direct about this theme all the way through.

"Bojack is a very dark show but also a very funny show" and yet I could never call it "dark comedy", I'm not sure why.

    • @ninakrishnamurthy6674
      @ninakrishnamurthy6674 3 місяці тому +2

I think it’s because the comedy doesn’t really come from darkness. “Black comedy” in my opinion is explicitly playing dark situations for laughs rather than seriously. That’s probably a reduction of the definition, but that’s what it means to me. Meanwhile, Bojack Horseman portrays these sad, dark moments for all the drama they’re worth and while, yes, comedy can be derived from these moments, they don’t take the edge off the tragedy. Take the final joke in this episode. Yes, it’s funny, but I find myself unable to laugh at it because it’s heartbreaking to me. Bojack had such a poor relationship with his mother that he walked into a funeral full of strangers and assumed he was in the right place. Because, for all he knew, maybe these people DID know Beatrice.

This whole episode is just amazing. The toughest part, however, is having to memorize a monologue in a TV show, choosing this episode ("its all monologue, surely its gonna be easy to pick a part out of it") and then realizing that you couldnt possibly decide that one part is better than others
