I just want to thank every single one of you who takes the time to watch my videos. I hope they help you in some way. Feel free to leave a comment and respond to others as well so we can all learn more about the Bullmastiff breed together!
This channel was created to track the life of our Bullmastiff Tua.
Videos will be posted to show not only his physical growth, but his behavioral changes, obedience level changes, and our overall experience with the Bullmastiff breed.
This will hopefully help anyone interested in the Bullmastiff breed by showing what to expect at very specific times all throughout a Bullmastiff's life!
Although this will be more specifically about the Bullmastiff breed, the videos should give a very general idea about what to expect at certain ages of many different dog breeds.
    Thank you!

I fed Teena raw. raw ground chicken from the butcher, carrots, apples, an egg and supplements. i was so lucky to find a gourmet butcher who ground the chickens which were not perfect enough for his shop. he ground them whole, bones and all. her poops consisted mainly of the bone meal - small, hard white turds that didn't smell. everything else she digested and used. she always got the fruit trimmings and any tuna can water. once i looked down and she was drooling like a faucet. at first i thought something was wrong, it was just pouring out of her mouth. then i realized i was eating strawberries without giving her the green ends, she was just watching me eating them until i realized it and gave her the greens.

My male Bullmastiff is 8, very calm, reserved intelligence. He walks very nicely on a leash walks/trots right beside me, always looking to me if it's ok. He gets lots of yard time to trot around & sun himself. Extremely healthy, I think he'll live 12+ easily! I guess I just got lucky!

Years old. This gentleman is giving very good advise! I am so blessed that our first Bull Mastiff has out lived our second one! He is a great dog and is so much pleasure and love! The first year is so important to socialize and train. And he is expensive! I wouldn’t trade him for anything. I’m 65 and am thinking about finding a good breeder for my third puppy!

I adopted my girl at 8mo and she'd already had a tumor removed. She passed at 5yo from lymphoma. Took a long time to be able to talk about her passing out loud. I'm a homebody, enjoy short walks down a solitary trail near my home. When we did run into men, they always gave me a wide berth; she was such a comfort. I drive a Mini Cooper and she'd hop in, no problem. You have to learn to laugh about the drool or it'll drive you bananas. BM owners probably have the largest collection of washcloths of anyone you know. We're about to pick up our BM puppy next month and find your videos super helpful. 🙏

I love watching your videos. My husband and I got 8 amazing years with our rescued bull mastiff mix George. Despite having uncontrollable epilepsy (over 10,000 grand mal seizures in his lifetime...yes we kept track of every one)from the day after he turned six months old, we would get another in a heartbeat. He was the absolute sweetest dog I have ever had the privilege of having in my life.

Good points. You hit on several that influenced my decision not to get a Bullmastiff. At 67, I didn't think I had the physical stamina to handle a dog weighing at least 120 pounds. Plus my husband has some serious health issues and I was concerned I couldn't socialize adequately. The last thing I wanted was to have a dog that I couldn't control and for someone to get hurt and possibly cause our dog to be put down. It wasn't a chance I was willing to take.

Yep. My 102 pound BM mix eventually would have gotten me evicted because he was already dog aggressive when I adopted him. And I couldn't always hold him back well enough if he decided to ignore my training.
All it would have taken would have been one neighbor complaining because he could sound pretty scary if he wanted to.
Plus, he wasn't happy in a small apartment.
      And that's only 102 pounds, not 120-150.
I really liked that dog. He was a pleasure to train and to walk. (99% of the time) But I did end up having to rehome mine.

Not sure I agree. When my Bullmastiff hit two he became a huge couch potato. He was very aware of his surroundings and never knocked anyone over. He has been around kids and grandparents. It was nothing I worried about and never had to worry about pulling except if there was a large male dog off leash. My guy was 150 lbs. if you adopt an older dog you will be fine. I never had an easier dog to care for. He did not need much
exercise. If you adopt a Bullmastiff at 2 plus years you will be fine.
My guy passed at 5. We took him everywhere. Never had a problem.

I have always owned larger dogs and really wanted a Bullmastiff. Unfortunately, I had developed some permanent health issues myself so I "settled" for a small dog and chose a female French Bulldog.
I gotta say that I absolutely Love my Frenchie, she is definitely a BIG DOG in a little package. I just like every single thing about this breed. She is funny, intelligent, entertaining, loyal, fiercely brave, and a very good watch dog (not guard dog), she will alert me to every potential danger.
One bonus or negative depending on your lifestyle is that French Bulldogs need very little exercise or space. They are very happy being couch potatoes and simply hanging out with you.
I still really like Bullmastiffs but I would recommend French Bulldogs to any potential dog buyer, especially the big dog lovers that can not get a big dog for one reason or another.

Another thing with cost to consider is the larger the breed the more the cost of meds (heartworm, antibiotics, ect), if xray is needed or surgery it all costs more. Plus for people who enjoy having a companion for rigorous exercise like jogging, this is a brachycephalic breed known for heatstroke and also ligament tears and ruptures from over exerchion. The tears present themselves subtly that most people don't know to pay attention to until its too late and the dog is limping painfully. I walk my 155 lb 15 month old pup carefully daily. I watch the weather forecasts and time accordingly. He walks 2 miles a day just fine but it has to be below 80° or he can't breathe as well.

Bang on so far in the video. I would make sure when you buy one that it's from a reputable breeder so you can see their general genetics is good, re hip issues etc. We can't control their genetics, we can control their weight, so keeping that in check will help protect their joints ( no don't starve them, but don't let them get overweight). Vet bills are expensive even if it's just a generic visit, get insurance or start saving early.
My first 2 barely made 7 years old. Very hard to take, it rips your heart apart bc of how great a dog they are.

With the drool, my 7 month old drools like crazy. my partner hates it 😂, she's use to her whippet never drooling. I think it gives the Bullmastiff more character.

    • @bullmastiffnd9784
      @bullmastiffnd9784  2 роки тому +1

Yeah it seems like the drool can be more less depending on the individual bullmastiff. Tua really doesn't do a whole heck of a lot of drooling outside of eating/drinking or exercising

    • @E92M3
      @E92M3 2 роки тому

@@bullmastiffnd9784 I will say, both parents are heavy droolers. Sort of went with that specific line because of the size and drooling 😁. here in Australia it's not uncommon to pay $4500 for a pup from a good breeder. Worth every cent, best breed. Been around them for the last 10 years but never had the space to get my own until now.

I’m now 74. Thor just turned 1 year last month. We’ve had a rocky beginning together. Thor had a spinal cord stroke at 5 months. He lost full use of his right hind leg. He’s adapted pretty well. Hasn’t slowed him down two much. I have an old farmhouse. So his climbing stairs to sleep in the bedroom, isn’t happening. I’m looking for a mini van. The first of March Thor was already outside. I came out to feed the birds. He got very excited, because I came outside. He started spinning around and his rear struck the side of my left knee. His bad leg probably gave out. I heard my knee break. X-rays say I’m now healed. Thor weighs in around 175. Very wide chest, very large neck and muscular. He relies on his front because of the damage from the stroke to his hind leg. I’ve had other breeds in my lifetime. He’s the most affectionate dog I’ve shared my home with. Thor only barks if he feels a need too. Everyone that meets Thor really likes him. His photo is in a lot of phones. I enjoy your updates. Thank you.

I had dogs in the right circumstances sight hounds, collies, bull terriers, and waited 20 years to get a country place with a large garden before applying for a RESCUE dog. Luckily got a pup, he had issues from scavenging campylobacter, and being beaten at 8-14 weeks, frightened of bowls and crockery. Boerboel Ridgeback cross most likely? about 80lbs gentle and intelligent and soft. Great guard dog, bit barky at times always on alert, but can be helpful, nonmodded phone calls or deliveries, churned up grass, dug a cave, likes sticks! So intelligent almost house trained himself at 16 weeks, and learns tasks, one go! Brilliant. NOT A DOG for an APARTMENT though. Surprised to see people would even think it! Everyone loves his wrinkly pup face! I am very grateful to have him.

As far as the elderly/weaker person's bull mastiff are actually highly recommended for service work. But that comes with re-enforced training. And specialized training. But they can be trained Simi easily (they can just be bull headed) not to pull for disabled persons it's one of three breeds I'm considering for my next service dog because they do great for mobility work. Just thought you'd be interested. Thanks for the video very informative

Very true, all of it applies to my 10 month old boy. He's very small for his age, only 90 lbs, but he can still drag me on walks if he gets very excited, for example every time he sees his best dog friend there' just no stopping him. We've been taking him on long walks since he was a little puppy yet he still gets very tired after maybe 3 miles. He's also generally very very lazy but every evening he has a big spike in his energy level and has to run around and go crazy for a while.

As a Mastiff owner (English and Neapolitan), many of us will carry towels around to deal with the drool. These dogs have much less drool to deal with, but some people fuss over any amount - in this case - they should choose a tight lipped breed, not in the mastiff/bulldog line.

I really appreciate the comment! Yes Bullmastiffs are much less energetic than a Lab or Shepherd however keep in mind in won't start like this. When young they can be very energetic. Probably like the first year to year and a half. But then they will fall into that typical bullmastiff behavior of being on the lazier side MOST of the time. Good luck with your pup and again thanks for the comment!

my family and i used to have a bullmastiff before be passed away last march. i can't remember what he had, but he was losing his muscles and pretty much turning to skin and bone. but he had his ups and downs. but we did teach him to sit and stay and to come over when we called. but we also has to create a fence out of strong wires as he loved to run. so we could never leave the front door open or he would be gone. we pretty much had to drive around until he got tired. but most were intimidated by him as he was big. his name was Buddy, but we called him Bud. i know the vets from the vetinary clinic we took him to always loved him. but he did drive us a bit crazy. he would even drink lots of water and shake his drooly face all over my dad. it was pretty funny. but he also had some doen sides like when he barked, he always farted. when Bud farted, everyone ran off as he would deathinate the living room. but he also managed to break the wires in our couch. we had to get him his own chair to sit in so he wouldn't break anymore couches. he got his own lazyboy and he lived it. but he also was a chewer. he would destroy anything he could. mostly his beds. he also went through many cow leg bones. he loved his bones. but we could never leave food on the counter and the table. my brother rescued Bud from his friend who was going through some rough times with transitioning into a woman. i can asume she got Bud to breed to get money for surgery. but all and all, Bud was mostly a good boy. we miss him dearly.

I agree completely about the size. I like big dogs, and I'm good at training them. But if my 102 pound BM mix saw another dog before I told him to sit and just watch, he would go after it and I couldn't always hold him back.
I could train a 150 pound dog. But if one that size decided to disobey me, I'd be in trouble.
Also right about the car. I drive a Mitsubishi Eclipse. And there is definitely not room in there for a 150 pound dog. I don't think my BM mix would have even fit in there.
    And the cost, too.
As much as I'd like a Tua someday, it's probably not realistic for me.

💯, I have boreboel Mastiff "the drool is horrible. I literally have to stand by her with a cloth every time she drinks and follow her, She was 3,000 from a highly respectable breeder to start with, but the hair is horrible They're bigger size dog so they're double the hair, They're needy and won't leave you be, they will trip you up or knock you over If you're not paying attention, they're expensive to buy for, food , vet, accessories ect. think it through and do research on any breed that you choose to bring into your life because it's forever-

I got 13 years out of mine. But the last year was really tough. Now I foster Mastiffs through the Mastiff rescue and have a 7 year old Neo that was abandoned. The rescue wants me to foster more, but I refused, I only do one at a time until we find really great forever homes. P/S if ANYONE is worried about the drool, do NOT get a Mastiff or Great Dane, that's just part of life with any of them.

I had an English Mastiff and now I have a Boerboel, and she’s often mistaken for a Bullmastiff. Mabel- the English Mastiff- was very tall for a female and weighed 200 lbs. Olive- the Boerboel- is not nearly as tall but she is 150 lbs of solid muscle. The difference in personality is mostly in how they are around people they don’t know. Mabel was pretty neutral, but Olive is standoffish. If she doesn’t know you, she doesn’t want you to touch her.

Most impirtant thing in choosing a dog breed is that you need to choose a breed that fit to you not only because you just like it. Aslso When you love someone or something you have to "neverthless" not "because". Recently in Jorea, there is a Shiba inu found was resuced. The owner kept the Shiba in a small room and never allowed to get out from the room only because the dog sheds too much. The owner should have not to get the Shiba inu from the biggning with if shedding is an issue. In Korea, the dog is nothing but a meat recently. And these days due to the economic decelopment, many Koreans keep dogs to pretend western life style yet their thoughts and ideas about dogs are still behind the times and many dogs are mistreated and abused.

My bullmastiff gets more exited when he sees someone different I let him go since most of them are my friends they just say hey your dogs saliva is on my short. They don't mind but when he sees a chicken all of his senses are gone so I'll have to train him on that. He's a good boy who made me trip 3 times when jogging heh. Then one day a neighbors dog got out of his house (since he forgot to close his gate) and attacked my dog good thing bullmastiffs are strong mine is very agile so he can dodge pretty quickly. Then the neighbors dog gave up no injuries or scratches but my bullmastiff seems pretty traumatized by that whenever I go past that area his tail will go down and becomes nervous I pet him so he can feel a bit comfortable.

Get a "GENTLE LEADER" for ease of walking. Not a pronged collar. I can walk 130 pound dog with pinky with this collar, she's dragged me to the ground with other types. Plus, the harsh collars can cause trakea damage. I can't recommend Gentle Leader enough. My dog weighs same as me, she wants to go, I'm going to be dragged until she stops with other collars.

Don’t give your dog any shots and you won’t have to worry about cancer
Don’t neuter your males till at least fully grown if at all
    Ftr
I’ve had 4 cats all strays from around age one or kittens
And 7 dogs all reduced except for my two bullmastiff/English mastiff mixes
All my cats are at least 15 years old with no trips to the vet. We just put one cat down this weekend who was 16 at least.
I still have 5 out of the 8 dogs. The three that died, did so of natural age related issues including my last husky who lived to 17.
My mastiffs are now 2. Brothers from the same litter. These two are the only dogs I have purchased from a breeder. I wanted them as a guard/family dog for my property. They are perfect for that roll with instinctive tendencies to patrol and gaurd. But they are calm and can determine what is a threat and what isn’t with minimal barking. Also the most affectionate dogs I’ve ever had for me my wife and children. Once they are introduced to you they are all good. Best breed ever.
Again. No shots. No vets. Mostly raw food diet. Exercise. Love.

I want a big dog soooo bad. I grew up with Rottweilers and still miss them every freaking day. I've been researching big guard dogs and I saw these big beauties and instantly fell in love.
But now idk if I should get one if they can get up to 150 lbs. I'm only 5'9" and rarely get above 130 lbs myself 😅 I'd either need to train the hell outta him or just get a different mastiff breed...if there's any smaller/thinner people that have a bullmastiff, how's it been handling/training and would you recommend it to someone who'd be legitimately smaller than their doggo?

I was just wondering about hiking. Now I’m No marathon runner lol but one day a week I do on average a 5-7mile hike. Probably takes about 3-3 1/2 hrs. We’re not fast at all and walk about 1 mile per 30min. It would be nice if Archie could join us once he’s grown a little more but not a big deal if he just stays home for those 3 1/2 hrs. Obviously it wasn’t a dealbreaker bcuz we got him. But do u think a BM could handle a 5-7mile hike 1day a week? The breeder said absolutely but I don’t know if that was just being said to keep the sale appealing to me. 😆

I have a Boerboel @ 58 kg - plenty of Bullmastiff in him. Best friend and protector. Gets into the car by himself. But you need that weight and strengh for especially large perb's.
