I got here from a “who did it better vid” and I’m almost offended at how little justice it gave this performance. Brilliant, innovative and very easily read as a part of the story. A+

I'm speechless. Absolutely speechless. I've heard "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" so many times with different singers. Don't get me wrong, I like Natalie Dessay, but Kathleen Kim... holy crap. She hits the notes perfectly, and as someone wrote, they're not shrill. What an amazing voice.

People always going on about this or that in opera. This song is highly variable. Every singer does it differently. Personally, I really love Kathleen Kim's tone, her beautiful staccato notes, her even tempo, and the precision of her performance. Do other singers hit higher notes or add more colorful things? Sure, but it doesn't take away from this performance! It's possible to enjoy them all!
Of all the performances I’ve seen of this song, I think I like this one most. She has good acting skills, she’s able to sing the song accurately while moving, and she has a lightness if voice that I’d imagine a doll having (rather than the womanly voices I’ve heard from the other performers I’ve seen).

In the story Olympia, who is singing here, is an automaton created by two scientists: The guy in the Dr. Evil costume, whose name is Spalanzani, and the other guy with the crazy haircut, whose name is Coppélius.
Spalanzani can be seen as a bad guy for 2 reasons.
One: he tricked the protagonist Hoffmann, here shown as the guy with the glasses, into believing the doll was a real human. Hence the eye-props when he inspected her.
Two: He tried to cheat Coppélius, the co-creator of Olympia, of his fees for his work done on Olympia. This later leads Coppélius to angrily dismantle Olympia, which then breaks the illusion for Hoffmann to his own embarrassment.
The attires of both Dr. Evil and Spalanzani are most likely based on more archaic crazy scientist figures, such as (and in particular) Dr. Frankenstein.

Fascinating performance though
The singing is of a high order such as has not been realistically attainable since the mid-1960's. Erin Morley is absolutely magnificent as the doll in every way, singing transcendantly and acting delectably inhuman. Even the chorus baritone's Strohbassy low F had point and good meaning. (A basso profondo would have sounded too good down there.) Much praise is due everywhere.

Can someone please explain the context of this? I really like this aria and would like to know what's actually happening.
Jeannie Traverso from what I read, it’s about a man named Hoffman falling in love with a girl (in this scene, it’s Olympia). This is only a part of the whole play. I think the aria is called “The Doll’s Song” because Olympia is actually a robot/doll. Hoffman later finds that out when he dance with her and she trips/fell and broke apart. I hope that helps, my information might not be accurate, you can find more about it on google, search for “Tales of Hoffman”

If by reference you mean is it both staccato, then yes. its a vocal technique that both of these songs use (sharp isolation of each note from eachother) however neither invented or own the technique.
