  • Robin travels all the way from Japan to attend Ted's wedding, even though she thinks it's too weird, cos there's still something between them - "that kind of stuff doesn't just disappear".

So, you breakup with a guy for nothing who can even die for you, then you come to his wedding and tell him not to marry because you might someday want to settle with him but not at this moment. You aren't gonna propose him or accept him, but you are telling him to not get married. What level of Friendzone is it?

I disagree. Her statement about "disappearing into someone else's life" is bull. Ted loved Stella and he cared enough for Lucy to be her step father. Yes, the wedding and engagement were rushed but marriage is about becoming a part of someone else's life and it is not wrong that Ted decided to do that with Stella.

Robin has always been a trainwreck and disaster for Ted. Whenever he pursued her or just started to have something with her, she disappointed him half the way. And when he was about to move on with somebody else, she intervened and messed up with the guy's head. No man needs that kind of woman.

Later on, this exact same thing will happen with Barney (except that Barney did it on purpose), she always wants what she can't have. That's not healthy. When she and Barney get divorced she falls for Ted all over again and probably a big reason of why that happened is because he was married now. I'm not saying she dosen't love Ted or that she didn't love Barney but that love is based on a twisted mindset of wanting what you can't have. And he totally made it rain.

    • @amsaric
      @amsaric 6 років тому +39

Michael Mello All that may be true, but everything she said was absolutely right. Ted was so focused on finding the love of his life he just jumped right into the idea of Stella being that person without evaluating if she even was and if that life is the one he wanted. Robin is 100% right and though it came from her own insecurities, it also comes from being a true friend to Ted in this moment and seeing what he failed to see.

After watching the series again, I suspected Robin didn't love Ted or Barney that much. When they offered to be with her, she rejected both of them. But when they moved on, then she suddenly wanted them back. She just want what she cannot have, and Lily said it outright at season 8. I don't even think she ever loved Barney. The first time when they were together (which last 6 months lol), it was more of a casual dating and it ended terribly. And Robin moved on in few months. Then when Barney dated Nora (which Robin introduced to him btw), she suddenly wanted him back and made him break up with her then rejected him for Kevin. Barney only got Robin because he was smart and knew that about her, and sort of tricked her into being with him (said to Robin I am done with you then made her want him then proposed to her). Poor Ted, he could get Robin if he simply did what Barney did. I also think Barney just wanted Robin because he was lonely and some mid-life crisis, and Robin was the only one he could get since no one wanted a womanizer like him. Then they divorced and Robin wanted Ted because Ted was with Tracy.
She was the most likable in season 3 when she was just happy by herself and wanted nothing from nobody. I love Robin but that is some deeply flaw character.

OK, I'm going to back up Robin here. She wants what she can't have because she's used to being pushed away/hurt in love., it's what she learned. Ted was a massive curve ball for her, she couldn't accept him because he was unfamiliar, he was what she wanted but didn't feel worthy of. Enter Barney, a reminder of her emotionally distant father and bam, we have wedding (not an accident) but she could never be happy. Ted was always it for her, she just couldn't accept it until she could feel worthy of him. The fact is, she always was.

Honestly even taking Robins hang ups out of the picture she was legitimately looking out for Ted in this scene. Yea she may not want to be with him at this point in time and who knows maybe never but she just felt like Stella was just not the right person for Ted. Like she said "it's like you're skipping ahead to the end of the book." I'll admit it Robin may have had some hangups of her own with wrestling for her feelings for Ted but I think this scene is a more important scene in showing how Robin was legitimately looking out for Ted in this scene. showing how she cared about him and to me that's why this scene is masterful

Totally. They should have skipped from this season to the last one so it all makes more sense. All those seasons in between totally lost the focus, created a super platonic friendship between Ted and Robin, even as roommates, gave too much importance to Robin's feelings towards Barney and made Ted look as a stubborn guy suddenly obsessed with his female friend with whom he had a brief romance 8 years ago... The writers completely lost the track and made the ending seem senseless after all that...

I don't think you understood the scene at all. Think deeper than your hatred. She's looking out for him here. She knows marrying Stella is not good for Ted. That's why she says "you're disappearing into someone else's house, someone else's life". Because marrying Stella meant Ted has to move to her house, take care of her kid. He always wanted to build and grow a family. But now he's just going along with whatever Stella already has. That's less than what he deserves. Robin was really brave to say these to Ted when his other friends couldn't. Knowing that saying all these would make Ted hate her she still wanted the best for him.

Love in their 50's doesn't have to be a passionate love affair like Ted/Tracy or Marshall/Lily. It can simply be two friends who have good sexual chemistry and want to share the rest of their lives together. It happens all the time when widows in their 60s remarry.

He never stopped loving Robin. Tracy gave him the life he wanted yet she's too perfect and at the end of the day, Ted wanted Robin, not perfection. His daughter Penny summed up the show "It's not about how you met mom. It's about how you're madly in love with Aunt Robin." Ted and Robin went off on their separate ways to get what they wanted out of life: Ted got his family and Robin got her dream career. Then they were ready to reunite. If you love someone you don't stop, ever. Ted never gave up on Robin. Letting go is not loving less. He finally ended up with Robin because he never stopped fighting for her. The writers have intended for Ted and Robin to end up all along. Timing was always against them. Timing is a bitch. Robin was just telling Ted what he needed to hear. Stella was just a rebound, and so were the other girls he dated. It came from a good place, it was just the fact that it came from his ex-girlfriend. Ted broke up with Robin because they wanted different things. If they had continued to date, they would have been miserable. In season 2, there were signs they were headed for a breakup because they wanted different things. They didn't connect on a lot of other levels. Sometimes love isn't enough. Ted eventually did end up with someone he deserved. But Robin was who he always wanted to be with. Robin also deserved what she wanted out of life, career and traveling. She got that. She found out she couldn't have kids. They were all young people, and they all had moments of doubt of what they wanted. Lilly called off her wedding to pursue art, Marshall had doubts about when he and Lilly wanted to get pregnant, and Ted went from fling after fling, and Barney had some people he dated, too. They were all growing in different ways and wanting different things. Robin got what she wanted, but there was always something missing. I think this show was pretty brilliant for showing one woman didn't fantasize about the conventional roles; wanting to get married, and have a bunch of kids and stay at home Mom. She knew what she wanted, but she never got what she needed. She could have had it with Barney, but even Barney went back to his old ways when they divorced. He didn't want kids either-until he had a daughter. Robin didn't think marriage was right for her. Robin and Barney had an engagement and there were always signs they would end up together. Ted didn't have to say yes to being the Best Man. Sometimes Ted did things without thinking about it. Because he so desperately wanted to find the one.

She didn't want to give up her freedom/Independence (which ever way you want to look at it) and Ted didn't want to give up his choice of children. Lots of people want Swarkles to last lifetime. I really thought Barney would completely mature after his marriage to Robin but that was clearly not the case. He was still Barney, still selfish and immature. Plus it's been established that Robin can never have children. Deep down Barney does want children even if he'll never admit it, so he and Robin had to divorce--at this time Robin is completely married to her career and she's always traveling, so she has very little time to spend with Barney. He had to accompany her on all her trips abroad. Needless to say he hates it and Robin won't change who she is for anyone, not even for Barney. Neither of them are willing to make sacrifices/compromises for each other, what else did you expect, the marriage was bound to fall apart and it did, lasting only three years. Robin and Barney are too similar and better off being bros instead of a couple. If they stayed together, Barney could never hold his own daughter in his hands, someone to make him truly feel "Legendary" and give his life meaning and fulfillment.
Robin had to end up with Ted because that's the whole point of this show: The journey to find everlasting love only to know love is imperfect and embrace those imperfections in all its forms. Ted's journey is about Robin and always will be. This show is called "HOW I met Your Mother", not about the mother herself. Tracy is the end product of what happens when Ted has grown and matured enough to finally settle down and live the life he always wanted with a loving wife and two beautiful children. Tracy is too perfect. At the end of the day Ted doesn't want perfection, he wants Robin. Once he got the life he wanted and Robin got the career of her dreams, both of them felt they got exactly what they wanted out of life, and were ready to reunite with each other. Like Tracy told her friend Cindy on her first day of class at Columbia: "We each get one and I got mine already". Max was Tracy's One. Robin is Ted's One. Marshall and Lily are each other's One of course and Barney's One was not Robin, but his daughter, Ellie. Neil Patrick Harris himself states "Barney and Robin don't belong together. She's meant for Ted".
Finally, Ted's speech on lasting love says it all. "If you're looking for a word that describes caring for someone beyond all rationality and wanting them to have everything they want without asking what's in it for yourself, or how much it destroys you, THAT'S LOVE. When you love someone, you don't stop, EVER. Not even when the whole world calls you crazy or rolls their eyes. If I can accept the world's advice and move on and find someone else, that's another disposable thing. That's not LOVE. That's not what this is"

It's fair that Barney and Robin didn't end up together. I find it very rushed how the break up was portrayed after so much effort and such a long time to bring them together, but it can make sense that they don't last. With all the character development, I don't think it had to make sense that way, but it can.
It's also fair, that Ted goes for Robin after his wife has died... but this is not reality. Ted's wife didn't die, and so he has to live on some other way. It's a TV-show. They chose what happened. Tracy was not "too perfect". There's no such thing. If she hadn't died, Ted wouldn't go for Robin, and he wouldn't want to either.
That's just the twist they chose to make, and in my opinion it sucks. It doesn't suck as much as its execution, but it sucks.
In my opinion Ted's story would've ended perfectly, if he met the mother, got the kids, and told the story. The end.
No deaths, no more dating, no extra partners. It's a show. Unlike reality it doesn't go on and on and on.
Robin's story could've ended well with Barney, if that's what they wanted. Barney's always been partying and goofing around. Travelling around doesn't necessarily ruin that for him.
Also, with so much effort put into ending up with Robin, with all the character development Barney's went through, it would've made perfect sense for me that they could make it work.
...and Ted's speech on lasting love was made by the hopeless romantic who had yet to find his one; Tracy. He thought it was Robin. For a long time he thought it was Robin. But he finally found Tracy in the end.
We don't know Max. Max is just a reference Tracy makes. He wasn't a character on the show. All we know is that before Tracy fell for Ted, she thinks she's had her "one true love", and that she can't get over him.
Well, surprise surprise! The show chooses to debunk that notion. Meaning the show does not want you to think "There is only one right person for everyone.". Otherwise they wouldn't have sent Ted to Robin either, because Tracy was indeed the right person for him (just like he was also the right person for Tracy). They just chose to make Robin one as well.
The only thing I like about that horrendous twist at the end is that it supports the notion that you can meet someone who fits you well as a partner, but that the timing still has to be right. That is literally the only positive side to that twist in my opinion.

Zoe Fang yeah that was a bunch of crap just like the ending. If it was true love, one of them would've given up something to be together instead of falling deeply for someone else lmao. I'm not saying only sacrifices mean true love, I'm just saying they clearly didn't choose each other. The ending sucks because it's so forced and ridiculous. Robin doesn't want kids, so let's make Ted hook up with another woman so she can be the breeding pig and give Ted the kids he wants, now her job is done let's kill her off so these two can get back together as intended, oh wait gotta break up her marriage too hum let me think let's make this adventurous guy who used to fly stage to stage just to pick up ons chicks suddenly have trouble with traveling too much and forget about a whole prev season where we make such fusses about how they grow and change and mature. Yeah beautiful love story isn't it.
Oh and btw about your quote, it's sweet but Ted clearly gave up on Robin lmao (of course unless he planned to murder his wife) so what's your point quoting it

No Robin was right, Ted was rushing into this wedding and Stella wasn't the one. She literally left him at the altar. She was talking out of place of love mostly, because she knows Ted and knows that he wants a grand wedding because he is such a hopeless romantic. It had some selfish intention too though I agree, because she still wants Ted as an available possibility if she doesn't find someone. It's like she tried to kill 2 birds with one stone by saying what she said.

Robin wanted to say « I still love you, don’t get married ». And she was right, Ted was rushing too fast to get married (like Ross with Emily in friends). Ted wanted to get married, not Stella.

I don't really like Robin, in hindsight, because she is an envious, self centered, abrasive jerk with a borderline hair-trigger temper. I especially dislike the character, since her fatal flaws are all traits I struggle with to a certain degree (abrasiveness less so), and yet she makes little effort to overcome them. I believe that she should have ended up with neither Barney nor Ted (Nora should have ended up with Barney, Tracy shouldn't have been killed off). She may be a good worker, but she doesn't function well in romantic relationships. It's no wonder, in my opinion, that Ted tries to portray her as a Romantic False Lead, in contrast to Tracy's Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Ted has reasons not to want to end up with her, and tries to tell the story accordingly, remaining in denial. Unfortunately, his kids realize that he is attracted to Robin, and manipulate him into continuing the story so they can try to convince him to move on from Tracy's untimely demise. Again, why HER?
That said, Robin's not wrong about Ted's intention to marry Stella Zinman being a HUGE mistake.
In hindsight, Stella's amicable personality comes off as a facade, while at least Robin is honest about her personality in comparison.

Even though Robin shouldn't gave been the person telling ted all this considering she is his ex and didn't want to marry him and now she is stopping him from marrying someone else. But she does have a point though. She was right ted was rushing into this. Honestly ted and Stella didn't even seem that much in loveor maybe it's just me. But robin did the right thing by stopping him.
