On a June night in 2017, opera lovers thronged to the Royal Opera House in London to hear tenor Jonas Kaufmann, recently acclaimed by The Daily Telegraph as the world s greatest tenor, make his eagerly anticipated debut in the title role of Otello Verdi s greatest and most demanding role for tenor voice. As the New York Times wrote Mr. Kaufmann made his debut in the part, and he calmly, confidently sang it for the ages.

I find it fascinating how different Verdi's last operas are in comparison with his earlier creations. It's like a completely different composer.
Try comparing this music with his Rigoletto or Nabucco.

One of the most important things I try to impress on my bassoon students at the RCM in London is changing the tone colour and this is such a perfect example for them to listen to.
Of course I love the way (particularly) Domingo and Vickers sing this aria, but Kaufmann's interpretation, for me, feels heartbreaking

Despite personal preferences, one cannot deny the immense power in Gaston Rivero's performances, especially in comparison to Kaufmann.
To anyone in the comments criticising Kaufmann’s performance here, I disagree- I think he hits a brilliant tone in contrast between the mezzoforte/forte sections and the pianissimo and pianissiissimo sections brilliantly. The amount of skill it takes to maintain tuning and darkness and sound while still maintaining delicacy while singing that quietly is incredible, and he’s not “inaudible” as some people in the comments claim- he has clarity and can always be heard over the audience. Plus, to those saying he can’t act, he’s a hell of a lot better than some opera singers, and he’s got a real element of dynamism- I recommend that everyone check out his 2014 performance of “la vita e inferno all’infelice”
@Nat Oliver Well if you perceive his voice as being 'brilliant' and 'clarion' , that's your opinion. Others don't, and that's their opinion. All a matter of opinions, and everyone is entitled to have one, but not everyone is entitled to their own truth. The whole business ceases to be an opinion and moves more toward objective fact only after you begin to compare Kaufmann's voice with other voices, preferably with LOTS of other voices - which is a very easy thing to do, plenty of material available, it requires only time, inclination, a good ear, and leaving your biases (if you have any) out of the game. The last thing is the hardest.
Let's celebrate the rich heritage of both seasoned legends and rising stars in the opera scene.

I have seen several productions of othello,in fact saw live last year live 2 shows in Vienna but this production I might say is the best,lovehim so much but this production beats them all,I think he is at his highest peak at this point,marvellous and beautiful beautiful voice and acting perfection ,thank you in uploading. 3:34

Kaufmann was born to sing "Otello". He's the only one who has all it takes.
To say someone is the ONLY one , now this is a very tall number . It means you have listened to ALL the others (ahem , that must have taken you the better part of an year , listening every day) , and it implies you have used comparison criteria , criteria you applied to all and found all the others wanting . If you don't know how many mathematical combinations this comparison business results in , consult wikipedia . Suffice to say , the comparisons would take the better part of your entire life , counting even the childhood years . Now to your criteria .What is your criteria? I am genuinely interested . Do you understand singing technique , various period styles , musical scores ,so you feel confident in making such a statement? If this isn't your criteria ,what is?

When Verdi sings, one has no mercy with the voice, words by Giacomo Lauri-Volpi himself, I study the affondo technique, which vocally catapulted opera singers such as Mario del Monaco, Corelli, Nunzio Todisco, Giacomini, Apollo Granforte, Titta Ruffo and a current vocal monstrosity like the Korean Rudy Park, listening to Kaufmann sing Verdi's Otello doesn't make me feel the slightest bit, ladies and gentlemen, we're talking about Otello! an immensely demanding work regarding the voice and its maturity, I believe without fear of being mistaken that this is the worst otello vocally speaking that I have heard in my life! I respect Mr. Kaufmann for his great career, humility, effort and courage that this entails, but at least in this work he does not stand out vocally at all, including those unnecessary pianos. Greetings.

This is not opera. This is whispering with the enhancement of amplifiers. Otello should be sang with rich, dark voice, not fake musicality. If Kaufmann is the most demanding tenor right now, then I'm not surprised that Opera Houses worldwide keep struggling to fill their seats.
Kaufmann heavy cow sound in bucket. Monotonous. Can't act. Unlike Corelli, voice not open, not visceral or thrilling in the moment. No top brilliance.
I sensed intense jealousy here. Learn something about opera and you will know why people fly across the world to hear him.
salve...Lei ha ragione a scrivere questo commento...ma siamo in un'epoca tecnologica,ed anche il teatro lirico ne usa a "JOSA",e non da ora...consideri,che già nel 1990 ,alcuni cantanti lirici ,avevano i microfoni inseriti nei costumi di scena!!! figuriamoci ora...Kaufmann ha una vocalità,che,dopo la terza fila la sua voce si perde... i suoi piani sono senza appoggio,e di conseguenza non corrono..... se ascoltiamo Kaufmann nell'aria Aura Amorosa di Mozart di 15 anni fa,stento a riconoscerlo!!! Li era davvero bravo,poi ha cambiato repertorio e tecnica,con voce intubata,ingolata e i risultati sono preoccupanti...saluti
