An illegal dribble (double dribble) doesn't happen often, so don't be surprised when it does.

  • This is another Rule Review segment covering plays involving illegal dribble situations, aka double dribble. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on the proper way to determine if an illegal dribble (double dribble) has occurred. Knowing when a dribble starts and ends is crucial when understanding and processing the basics of this rule. Just because a player touches the ball with two hands does not make it an illegal action. However, if a second dribble occurs after the first has ended, an illegal dribble has occurred and a violation should be ruled. Watching actual videos showing illegal dribble plays helps officials learn faster and retain rule information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written pertaining to the legality of a dribble, when it starts and when it ends, and reinforce those rules by applying them to actual high school basketball videos.
    In this segment of Rule Review, the four illegal dribble video clips we reference are all high school games and involve different aspects to improving your ruling on any possible illegal dribble violations.
    Video #1
    - An unbalanced dribbler carry's/palms the ball with the official blowing his whistle and calling an illegal dribble violation. The dribble ended once the ball came to rest in the dribblers hand on the carry. A correct ruling of an illegal dribble was made since a second dribble was made after the first dribble had ended.
    Video #2
    - The dribbler initiates a pass to his teammate but changes his mind and continues dribbling. Touching the ball with two hands is NOT illegal act alone. The ball must be dribbled a second time after first dribble ends but since the player touched the ball simultaneously with both his hands, the dribble had ended. When he continued to dribble after this act an illegal dribble had occurred.
    Video #3
    - A player intends to pass the ball to a teammate but when he runs by the ball the player darts to regains possession. The dribble ended once the ball was touched simultaneous by both hands. When a ball is thrown away, hitting the floor, it is considered to be the start of a dribble. If ball is regained by the same player, the dribble is completed. However, if this act is a "fumble" then the player may regain possession without penalty BUT the player still CANNOT dribble a second time.
    Video #4
    - The dribbler loses control of the ball and and after picking the ball back up and starting another dribble no call is made by the official. Once the ball hits the opponents foot the dribble ended so why was the player able to pick the ball up with two hands and start a new dribble? Rule 9.5.2 states the illegal dribble restriction do not apply when an opponent touches the ball causing the dribbler to lose control. It is also noted, this play is not a kicking violation since the defender do not intentionally strike the ball with his foot.
    Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points. Taking away and remember specifics on a rule such as the illegal dribble (double dribble) is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
    The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

    If I'm in a triple threat position can I keep dribbling? Also if I catch the ball while dribbling,and dribble again is that a double dribble? Im confused on what a double dribble is.

      I'm not sure I understand your questions. What do you mean by a "triple threat?" "Catch the ball while dribbling?" If you are dribbling then stop dribbling by catching the ball, you cannot dribble again.

    First question: Can you still establish a pivot foot after recovering a fumbled ball? Second question: if i possessed the ball on a hustle, can i stand up without dribbling the ball?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  Рік тому

      If a ball is fumbled, it is a loss of control and therefore a new pivot foot may be established.
      A player who has grabbed the ball and established control “on the ground” may not stand up without a violation occurring. If that player still has a dribble available to them, they may start a dribble and stand up while dribbling without penalty.

    Thank you for this video, it is very helpful! But one question: in the situation at 4:33, after the ball was fumbled without control could the player theoretically slap the top of the ball/dribble it with ONE hand while it is bouncing or rolling on the ground (or even after it comes to a complete stop on the ground) to continue a live dribble? On one hand I would think yes since he never had control for the dribble to end and then never picks it up with 2 hands, but on the other you said at 4:42 that the dribble "still ends" even if there is loss of control (thus implying no further dribbling at all, even with one hand). Thanks in advance!

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  Рік тому +1

      When the player touches it with two hands, by rule the dribble ends, regardless of fumble status or not.

    From where Is rule 9.5 stated in video 4?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому +1

      In the fourth video clip, the ball touches the defenders foot. Since 9.5.2 says this is one of the acceptable situations where a dribbler CAN dribble a second time, this play is legal. Hope that helps.

    • @810ych
      @810ych 3 роки тому +1

      @@OfficialsInstitute yes, it helps! Thanks for the clear explanation for this situation. However, I have the same situation as the comment below. If a ball handler ends his dribble, couldn’t shoot or pass. Then he finds a defender, intentionally and lightly throws the ball to the defender’s back. Could he start a new dribble since the ball has made contact with others. In my opinion, I consider it legal.
      What do you think?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому +2

      9.5.3 says "a pass or fumble which has then touched, or been touched by, another player." And since the definition of a pass is not restricted to a teammate, this would be a legal play.

      @@OfficialsInstitute it’s weird that when someone dribbles then picks it up with 2 hands to pass like at 4:30, but then if it’s deemed a fumble then they can go recover it but if it’s not deemed a fumble then they can’t recover it. Why are you just not penalize whether it’s a fumble or not. That leaves too much to discretion and it could be a bail out for the player. It’s all based on the ref and what they’d like to call almost.
      Also, the kickball rule is tricky. Because if the offensive player throws it off the defense foot that’s not intentional by the defender but oftentimes the offense gets the ball back… in this video while the defense was sliding and the ball went off his foot it was deemed not a kickball … basketball rules are iffy man

I think games would be a lot smoother and maybe there would be a lot less conflict between players coaches and officials! Players just don't know Basic Rules of Basketball
