  • This is Rule Review covering plays involving player technical fouls. This video is dedicated to educating basketball officials on the proper way to rule on non contact fouls involving players or contact fouls that happen during a dead ball. Watching actual videos of plays involving technical foul issues, along with some basic instruction explaining each rule, helps officials learn faster and retain rule information better. We can all learn together by continually discussing the rules as they are written in the NFHS rules book and viewing actual high school basketball games reinforces that learning.
    Because technical fouls carry a heavier weight than common fouls, many times officials ignore actions that would qualify as a technical foul. Worrying about being rated poorly, or having a coach report you to your assigner or association, should not be factor when ruling on the validity of a technical foul. This is what we will be reviewing in this segment of Rule Review. And remember, all video clips we reference to highlight technical fouls are from high school games and focus solely on the NFHS high school rules book.
    Video #1
    - A player makes a great play to the basket and dunks the ball to finish his incredible drive. But was the dunking action a bit too much or was it just good showmanship?
    Video #2
    - In a routine layup, a defender jumps in the air to attempt a block and slaps the backboard in the process. But did the defender actually attempt to block the shot or was the intent to hit the backboard all along?
    Video #3
    - When a player takes a shot on goal and gets knocked to the ground with no whistle, that player gets up and makes an emotional outburst only to hae the official assess a technical foul. Was this technical foul warranted?
    Video #4
    - A foul is called at the division line and after the whistle is blown, the dribbler continues toward the basket and is met by another defender who reaches out to stop him, grabbing and pulling the ball handler to the floor. A foul was called by the official observing the action. How should the crew proceed?
    Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but true education and learning can more effectively be attained when each video is annotated with diagrams and shading to point out key teaching points.
    The Officials Institute, and the Rule Review segment, creates videos that don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

    I am a second year official just now going through these videos. Very informative. In the last scenario, is there an additional bench technical foul for white #4 leaving the bench? He was not standing in response to an outstanding play by a teammate. Rule 10 Section 5 Article 4

      #4 did not leave the bench, but simply stood up and it looks to have been a spontaneous reaction to this outstanding play, "a play that stands out." Thanks for watching.

    As a non-ref, parent, I think all dead ball violations should be called right from the start. It's so easy to follow. There's no reason to give a verbal warning first. And when you let it go, you end up with nonsense dangerous situations like we saw in the last clip.

    for slapping the backboard, after you call the T, which team gets the ball back since the ball is shot and becomes loose?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому

      All technical fouls are penalized with 2 free throws to the offended team and a throw-in at the division line opposite the table. This happens for every technical foul regardless of the status of the ball.

      @kdutton33 3 роки тому +1

      @@OfficialsInstitute I disagree with what you're saying at 4:07. At least in that clip anyways. The player is attempting to block the shot at the height of the shot. The offensive player draws back his shot once the defensive goes into the air to avoid getting blocked. Leaving the defensive player still moving in that direction. There is no intent to disrupt the shot by slapping the backboard or even just slapping it to slap it. That is an attempt at a block you see time and time again of the defense pinning the shot on the glass or blocking it off the glass. It is a good job of the defense not to try and block the shot in the offense's hand and foul him.

    If the player grasp the basket, is it a direct technical foul or indirect technical foul?
    If the player do it again for the second time ( same player ), is the player stay the game or not?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  2 роки тому +1

      All player technical fouls are direct to that player. There is no indirect technical foul for a player. Two player technical fouls results in disqualification for the rest of the game.

      @@OfficialsInstitute oooh ok ty

  • @cptfwiffo
    @cptfwiffo Рік тому

    Wow. As a Fiba ref, I would've called these so, SO differently.
    1) Hanging on the rim could've been called a T... but I probably wouldn't call it. They're not 200+ pound behemoths, the ring can take it. (I say... until I see a kid break it and then I'll call it afterwards). I'd give an official warning on it.
    2) Slapping the board is fine. The board can take it, there is zero impact on the play. If it is done to distract the shooter, perhaps a Tech is valid. I'd be hesitant on that. But if it affects the ball, that's interference.
    3) Communication with the ref? Sure, you can get one. But the player was RIGHT. There is no such thing as 'marginal contact' when you're in the air. Just call the foul, protect the shooter. I don't know what he said, but if it was just emotion and nothing blasphemous, I'd let it slide. Because the ref KNOWS there was contact, and decided to ignore the rules. If it was ruled the same way consistently, sure. And if the refs had warned the players about their behaviour, sure. But I wouldn't call it out of the blue. Let them play, until they can't. Adjust as necessary to keep control.
    4) I wouldn't call a tech on the player going on. I would call a disqualifiying foul on the defender pulling him down. That is disgraceful. If you see that being done on a live ball, it's a disqualification. Way above unsportsmanlike. Up until then, you could argue the white player was moving towards the nearest ref for him to reach: the lead (as he was past the slot). Did he want to pass it? Probably not. Is it a delay of game?

    on the last play of dead ball situation, shouldn't the free throws of Technical Foul be canceled out because each team get one Technical?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому +1

      If you think the technical fouls were committed simultaneously, then yes since there no free throws awarded for a simultaneous technical foul. However, if you determine one foul happened before the other, as is indicated in this video, the fouls must be penalized in the order in which they happened.

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому +2

      If you consider the act committed by the defender to be a flagrant one you would be justified in ejecting them from the game, however, it is our opinion this contact does not rise to that level of foul and agree with the technical intentional foul as called.

    • @shanejones8884
      @shanejones8884 2 роки тому

      @@OfficialsInstitute You don’t eject a player in high school. A “flagrant technical foul” can only occur when the ball is dead. A player who receives a flagrant technical foul is disqualified from the game to the bench. High schoolers are minors and must have adult supervision.
      Which is why if the head coach and assistant coach are “ejected” and there is no other adult school representative available the game is a forfeit.

    In a game this past weekend the opposing team had 6 players on the court for about 12 seconds. When refs were made aware, they stopped the game and charged the opposing team with a delay of game penalty.
    The ref said it was not a technical foul because both refs allowed it to happen.
    Was this just a line, or is such a claim legitimate?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  Рік тому

      If 6 players are discovered to be playing on the court, it is a technical foul. However, if it goes undetected and when the officials are informed it happened, but there is no longer 6 on the floor participating at that time, it is nothing as it can only be enforced if it is discovered while happening. Make sense?

    Shouldn't an Intentional Technical foul result in 2 shots and the ball at the spot of the foul instead of the division line?

    • @OfficialsInstitute
      @OfficialsInstitute  3 роки тому +3

      This can be confusing because of the "intentional" wording in the foul, however, this is NOT an "intentional foul" but a "TECHNICAL INTENTIONAL foul". Because it is technical in nature, it is handled the same as all other technical fouls with two shots and a throw-in at the division line. Hope that helps.

    A technical foul is how an official retaliates when attention is called to a corrupt or incompetent act by the official.
