50yrs ago next week...i can remember it as a child...poor Lesley...i saw a Whittle coach in Scotland not so long ago, owned by a major chain these days!
My house was right next to bathpool woods where we played as kids. He used to steal milk from our door in the mornings and my dad because he worked nights, the police came and interviewed him in our home and they got a shock ad he had just hit offa night shift and his eyes were all red. Anyway of course it was not my dad. Another couple of things us kids found a nap in a tree hole with a ring around Kidsgrove my home town and where he had Lesley down the drains in bathpool park. The map we took to the police too. And the end of the film is the post office where the police catch him in Kidsgrove. So sad she was killed by him and the others he murdered. I moved from Kidsgrove in 2021 to the Outer Hebrides where I now live. Brings back memories.
Wot? Neilsen stole milk from and they interviewed him in your house, or did they interview your dad? Why did they get a shock, and who wasn't your dad?
I first watched this in the early 80's. I'm sure it was banned back then in Britain. Our small local corner shop was the only place that had it on video.
@@mikeconey2164 I can't ever remember seeing this on telly. Did it have any showing at the cinema ? or not ? ( i had not even heard of it until i saw it here !
Neilson was driven to all this mayhem because he was bullied in school, according to WikiPedia. His last name was Nappy. It did not do him any favours.
Yes, but no excuse to torture an innocent family and kill postal office workers. He was a clumsy thief. Feel so sorry for his wife and daughter who have to live with what happened.
I ride my Push bike through bath pool park on acayshon. And wonder where he kept her captive in the park. Did he push her or did she slip of buy Accident and hang. R.I.P. Leslie Wittel.
There is no conclusive proof if she slipped or was pushed. But either way she died during the kidnapping crime and as such Neilson would be charged with her murder. She would not have died had the criminal not put a noose about her neck and put her at that location.
Indeed. When Sams committed his crimes it was only about 15 years after Neilson's arrest, so would've still been fresh in the publics conscious. Of course Sams went straight for the big time pay out using kidnap and ransom. I believe Neilson himself was partly inspired by the kidnap of Muriel McKay in 1969. He apparently studied her kidnap and ransom and tried not to make the same mistakes that her kidnappers made.
Yes, i see your point there. The police don't seem to have got anywhere with identifying him for some reason. I suppose that if he didn't have any friends and kept away from people, there isn't anyone to put his name forward as a suspect ? ( and many criminals are only caught because someone informs on them.) I don't know many details about the investigation and why he wasn't caught sooner.

After 400 burgularies the Police could still not identify the burgularies as commited by the same criminal as he kept changing his modus Operandi. He also varied the locations and choose them for their remoteness and ease of access across country.
@ Was his eventual capture just 'bad luck for him', or was he becoming less competent ? Was he making mistakes, maybe if he was unhappy with things, maybe fed up with it ?
Is he getting away with it just by chance ? I suppose if he doesn't have any friends or accomplices, then there's no one to put his name forward to the police; which is how many criminals are caught.
A certain kind of madness in his head. The thought that he was in control of their lives. That be could just do as he wished right there and then…End their lives. I am guessing. I believe he went off the rails when he was in the army or when he left.
I read that reader digest story in africa many years before this crime. It was about a man who buried people in boxes with air supplies. Not much to read but reader digests. I never knew it inspired this madman.
If the ransom hand over had gone ahead, i don't know what plans, if any, he had to get out of that area should the police be around ? This is the trickiest part of the plan, being able to pick up the money and get away. In this case it looks as if there were only a few policemen following the money, a 'few' minutes away, so there would be a good chance that the kidnapper could avoid capture in the dark. ( what was the police's plan anyway ?)
I guess he did not. But it's reasonable in my opinion to believe a storm drain such as that one is not opened regually. It was about 2 or 3 months when workmen entering found the body.
Leslie done well didn't, it showed the black panther climbing down the drain and a caption came up 16 january 1975 then it showed her still alive, Leslie whittle died on the 14th of january, still alive after being dead for two days, Amazing
I love these old school , British crime films, like these one,and specialy Long Good Friday and Get Carter.
Excellent movie, gritty England in the 70's. Which is way preferable than today!
England has become a sewer. It's criminal what successive Labour and Conservative governments have done to such a once-beautiful country.
Nope sorry, today is vastly better than the 70s

Worth watching. A decent British movie. Back then, Post Offices carried a lot of cash.

With this film being made only a couple of years later, most things in it will look the same as at the time it took place.
