This excellent movie provides loads and loads of food for thought. This is the kind of story that stays in your head long, if not forever, after you watched it. Whenever someone with no apparent mental issues makes himself a murderer all of a sudden, as if on a whim, for no obvious reason, you can be sure there's more to it than meets the eye. Never judge a man untill you've been standing in his shoes, which doesn't mean you can turn a blind eye to everything he does. Human nature is incredibly complex, that's why Justice in any country should never rush up things in order to reach a verdict. Being a member of the jury is a very upsetting experience. A friend of mine told me once it left her reeling so much so that she's hoped ever since she'll never be put up to the job again.
Oh my goodness this brought so many tears to my eyes. This does the same thing to those in was but this is even worse. Shepherd and Butcher! Any normal human being would never be able to bear this type of work and those who could are already mentally unstable.
Absolutely stunning movie. Not my kind of movie, at all. Yet, it was mesmerizing, the entire way through. I couldn’t look away. I watched until the end and so should you. Based upon a true story.
A Powerful movie, deffo worth the watch. And good insight into the practice of the death sentence in SA. But I bet it's the same, but different in each country..
The South African defence force started fighting in Rhodesia in the 60’s then on to Namibia / Angola and Mozambique. Finally the townships until 1990 😢
Case example of how frigle the mind is. Like a sponge, the mind is able to absurd only so much before it can no longer endure. He snapped and acted unconsciously. Deminish responsibility . Compelling indeed
First time in the annals of justice that an accused of murder is proven mentally unstable and irresponsible for the murders he committed, without the testimony of not even a single psychiatrist/psychologist expert witness. Wow! What next?
@@spock3202I gave away a jaw dropping glaring mistake in the plot that supersedes the importance of the ending. PS: this is what the comments section are for: to comment about the movie.

Wow. That’s not an easy movie to watch. I’m not against death penalty in very grounded cases where the perpetrator cruelly killed someone, or totured a person before killing them, etc.; but this was something else… my goodness! And to do this job without any counsel or help…that was also cruel in itself.
Poor young man , but my question is what is south Africain military fighting in Angola???? Controversial, criminal, jurisdictional issue. This movie is a gem and good insight to a history most don't know 👍💯 A lot legal mistakes made in the court room , including the senior judge and assessor's Let alone breaches to the Geneva convention and more
I believe Angola was assisted by Cuba and US was on the side of that monster Maputpo in the congo for poitical reasons. Namibia was still under SA at the time and they were also assisting the US.
Read the history of South Africa from different perspectives. The US were manipulating as usual and the then SA government were a bunch of racist clowns. Alk for money. Follow the money. SA's history and all the blood, sweat and tears for the normal, people, was fot the enrichment of Colonialists like Britain and later supposed anti-communists like the US.
This was so powerful well presented and truthful. I do hope people remember it is the devils spirit that uses our bodies and is often the reason why the Act’is not remembered. We humans are incapable of evil but have the understanding of good and bad. It is the devils spirit that when we are vulnerable usés the opportunity to drive for the blood which when dead leaves that persons spirit open for the take if it indeed has not been saved in time in the name of Jesus before death. This being Lucifers ultimate prize. Pray and love is key ❤
As a nurse, as young 18, 19, 20 year old sheltered girls we witnessed life where people were the most vulnerable, had horrible experiences, pain and suffering shared……. We did silly things ,like dressing as ghosts, scaring our colleagues spraying them with water etc…..it’s called escapism…….nurses have the darkest of humour………I was unimpressed with the prosecutor’s argument…..she had no insight into the human psych…….
They never should have forced the warders to hang the men in a rush after the uprising in the prison. It was chaotic & put everyone at risk & made it so procedure was difficult to follow. The hanged men were essentially tortured by it taking so long. It didnt just affect them. Even on a "normal" day the warders were really affected by their role in hanging the men.💔
" that man must pay for what he's done" we as a society must pay for what we've done if we don't than, for example , those seven men pay and on and on and no one feels there's any justice done but the universe achieves balance. There's a way . Another way. We just haven't been accessed the knowledge and at constantly emotionally manipulated and distracted from our choices, how " things " work and the accountability
Hi Nobody ever thinks of the impact of the death sentence on the ones that have to carry it out! That’s bad enough but the Shepherd and butcher being the same person is trespassing on God’s exclusive domain!😮😮

In my humble opinion, this movie is trying to propagate and justify why "apartheid is a crime against humanity" as declared by the ICC and the UN, not withstanding the hippocracy of those organizations displayed during the Palistinian Genocide that Israel committed on its own citizens. That! is allso called "appartheid"by collectavist supporters . The fact that the then "apartheid" government made every nation in SA independant at the time this movie is supposed to happen is not mentioned, nor is the fact that from 31 May I961 (Republic day , or freedom from British colonialist commonweath hegemony day ).the "apartheid government" built 40 classrooms A DAY for blacks ( for 33 years). This is not remotely comparable to Israeli "apartheid. I have to mention all this to illustrate that the scenario this movie is based on could not have existed, . The propaganda lies in the suggested brutality of the previous government which is a continuation of a long standing narrative which is simply not true, illustrated by the differance in the "civilized" British "sharp inteligence" contrasted with the Afrikaans accents. The proppaganda is subtle and the evil intentional.
A most remarkable, graphic and traumatic film that stirs the emotions. Brilliantly acted and directed
An outstanding film, just worth seeing. It deserves not being lightly chatted about, but thought about over and over again.
True. A profound film

Really excellent, powerful film. Disturbing and harrowing, but also thought-provoking.
Steve Coogan is a better actor than comedian… excellent acting, very gripping film
He’s a truly talented man.

Most countries do not have the death penalty now , just barbaric countries
I'm against the death sentence I feel the legal system is mostly theater. I'm not against taking immediate self-defense actions.
Exceptionally excellent movie. Can't thank you enough. Edited to add: The acting was amazing.
Excellent and powerful movie . Acting excellent all round . Thanks for showing .
Top movie, I'm glad I've clicked it.
TOUGH SUBJECT MATTER!!! THOSE DEATH ROW AND HANGING SCENES WERE BRUTAL!!!
And possibly the original crimes?
I agree! It's statistically almost certain they weren't all guilty, either. 💔
They have to be very very careful with the death penalty.
Excellent film! Thoroughly captivated from beginning to finale ...thanks
Doubt NOT A SINGLE WORD. I lived at the time on the Cape.
How was the Cape occupied before the White settlements?
Great film. And "Escape from Pretoria" I highly recommend watching to everybody
I never realised Coogan was such a great actor. Strange how all those hung were black apart from one.
Maybe due to the fact that 76% of the population were black and 13% were white in the 1980s (the rest was made up of Indians and Coloureds)
Well 90% of residents were black in the townships for a long time. The law enforcers that resided there to oversee were white..
Heartbreaking on every level 💔

Actally it is about the death penalty rather than apartheid. And to engage in dbious whataboutery is not the best way to defend apartheid in any case.
