- What do octopuses and basketballs have in common? They both go right through nets :P
In today's episode of Octopus Reacts, Larry, our octopus, gears up for a quick game of basketball. What initially started as a fun little game quickly turned into an episode when we saw his fascination with both the ball and the net. You'll notice his handler had a very difficult time taking the ball away from him. In fact, the ball remains with Larry to this day!
We will continue working with Larry on the court. Using positive reinforcement, we're attempting to teach him to put the ball through the hoop. We'll definitely be posting another basketball video if we manage to get anywhere with this. Larry may not be ready for the NBA just yet, but octopuses are fast learners!
The song is the "Sorry Boyz Music" take on the old public domain classic, "Sweet Georgia Brown"

Larry sure loved that ball! The way he grabbed it when you bounced it..."MINE!" I hope it's going to be a permanent part of his toys now. 😁
I really hope so too! He loved that ball! So awesome✌🐙
I thought he was trying to eat it at first when he ballooned over it, lol .... then he grabbed it from you -- talk about possession of the ball!!
I'd say it did try. First "is it edible" then "does it contain something edible" then "this is a toy".
@@3characterhandlerequired It looks like I'm starting to understand octopus body language -- who knew!!!
Get that 'pus a Celtics t-shirt! (Must have 8 armholes, of course.) Loved how he oozed out of the net-gives new meaning to "loopholes."
Larry can already steal the ball and block shots! Now he just needs to know how to make baskets and dribble.
This is so cool, Larry loves the basketball. I think he's attracted the bright color orange 🏀 🐙 ❤💙💚
Yup, I think that too!
🧡
Is it me or do Ocotpus prefer round items than any other shape? That would be a good experiment to try. 😊🐙🐙
Great idea!
I can't image they would like nets. I wish I had the time and resources to build 2 tanks with all kinds of unique color schemes and then create challenging escape routes between tanks and enjoy watching a real octopus once they get comfortable enough to try everything out. but I don't so Im glad that this channel is here. If or when I get in a different place then it would be awesome to do.
Larry is gonna be the next member of the Harlem Globetrotters! ❤️
He sure liked when the ball bounced fast, maybe it surprised him.
He grabbed it like MINE😀🐙
Oh my gosh; he loved it! Have you tried him with a jungle gym since he likes climbing? You can get little bird sized jungle gyms that might suit him, lol.
A few more lessons, & they can add "Byrd" for Larry's last name.
😄 I'm sure the human basketball legend would approve, with the greatest enthusiasm, of such an honor.🎉🏆🏀🐙🎆
Larry sure has a killer steal! I wouldn't like to play man-to-octopus with him...
😂
That would be a two on one right?😀
I think Larry likes how the ball feels. Sort of like a soft round rock. Maybe he would add it to his hoard.
Poor Larry need some octopussy.
"Why do they keep tossing me the squeezie when I'm climbing on my jungle gym?"
Larry loves his ball and needs it. I love Larry.
What next? Octopuses on Ice playing Hockey?
I think your octopi have gotten used to the notion of random objects entering their tank every extent of time
He's a natural and with all those legs...fakes will win the game! :)
This one looks like a really chill easy-going chap.
Ref: traveling!....…...... I think.
Octopus: ...
2:53 Wow, look at that coloration. "MINE! MINE!" Are you going let Larry keep his ball? :-)
I can't tell if it liked the ball or the net more. 🤔 Either way, I think you've got a winner. 👍
Now I wanna see an Air Bud movie featuring an octopus instead of a dog. "Well there is no rule that says an octopus can't play".
He sure loves that ball! Was he also trying to imitate the shape of the net? At 0.29 and again at 2.04? He sure seemed to enjoy interacting with the human and the ball!
2:14 "This is the worst hammock, ever! How's it supposed to work, anyway? Quit throwing that ball; I'm trying to figure out something, here! Dammit, I give up. Where's that ball?"
ive never really thought of octopus before as cute , but that is really cute
I want an octopus. If I just had a large aquarium with one in it that I could watch, I believe I would get to sleep pretty quickly. Their slow motion and how their tentacles unroll and roll perfectly. The way they carefully touch a thing and their inquisitiveness. Relaxing. Yes, I want a octopus.
Eight-armed defender. I sense a new character in the Space Jam sequel.
Larry sure liked that basketball...Globetrotters will be looking to sign him on😂
(Bounces ball) "food!" Grabs ball. Nom nom. "Bleh! What's this crab made of!?"
It's was amazing when his mantle was pointing straight up!!
Wonder what that meant!! Lol
He looked like a completely different creature!
Best Harlem Globetrotters audition yet!
That is so cool. I have always loved these animals. Thank you !
Imagine the level of computations needed to make a robot do what an octopus does.
What we learned from this video:
1) There are no palming or traveling rules in Octopus basketball. Just like the NBA.
2) The Globies have made Sweet Georgia Brown the theme of basketball on a court or under water.
Sweet Georgia Brown!😂
2:25 *blows whistle* FOUL! Number 11, goal-tending! 2 free throws!
They love red and orange don't they? They are always so possessive of that color. Loved the creative use of the GeoMags.
Another terrific octovideo! Thanks for giving us the name! Larry would excel in dribbling!
After the net was put in, and he got a glimpse of his reflection, he seemed more interested in that.
There’s that other octopus again! Stop looking at me!
It’s really cool how the caretakers manage to make every day new and intriguing for the octopi. Good use of stimuli. ^^
That's one to make you smile!
I understand goldfish can be taught to place a ball in a hoop. Maybe there can be a future basketball "game", in different tanks, with scoring for the number of times the ball goes into the hoop in 5 minutes...
Must be a happy octopus, he is always smiling.
1:40 Screw that orange thing, I got me a hammock!
Choose snack A (his favorite snack) and snack B (a snack he likes a bit less). Then, give him snack B, and a few minutes later, give him snack A. Later, give him first snack A and once he has finished it, nothing. Repeats both versions several times. Then, finally, give him the choice of both snacks (in separate spaces so he cannot "think" that he can get both of them), and we'll manage to see if he refrains his desire of eating snack A and eat snack B (which he likes less) instead to get an additional better snack a few minutes later. We'll see if our friend has a sense of ressource management !
So the octopus is playing basketball.
That was so cute! I loved the Globetrotters' music in the background!
Episode 276: Can an Octopus create a supercomputer from bits?
Fascinating creatures! Can they see and watch a video screen? I wonder if they can learn that way... 🤔
The music is killing me. Go Larry Octopus-Bird!!
LOL! I guess technically he has a beak.
Actually, that's Harlem Globetrotter music...
These videos are amazing
That is a neat ball! It bounces and he appears to love it!
I feel like you'd need to show the octopus a game of basketball for him to understand it. I've heard they can learn by watching other octopuses, I wonder if they can learn by watching a human...
This octopus is very beautiful. Flexible, colorful, and intelligent 🤓
Haha I have to say this is my new favorite!! I just love the little creatures! MOM I WANT AN OCTOPUS!!!🐙💜🌎✌
Can you use food conditioning to teach him how to throw down monster jams?
I love these smart and wonderful creatures!
Amazing creatures
He gets 10 points two for the ball and 8 for him :) love Larry!! 👍
Super amazing I was sure that he doing
Thank you for this video
I was going to suggest you try again but dunking the ball directly into the net, whilst simultaneously releasing his favourite snack. Then I read you're training him to "score" using positive reinforcement, so I think we're on the same page! I'd love to see it when he finally clicks and understands the purpose of ball and net 😆 It's hilarious that he's still got the ball, though. I wonder if he's seeing it as something else that would be found in his natural environment?
(Don't worry, I'm not saying he should be released. I understand that behaviour and other aspects of octopus life need studying if we're to protect their wild cousins. Besides, were I a wild animal who was able to choose between the typical daily stresses of my natural environment and a safe haven where there was no chance of me being someone's dinner (including humans!), food would be regular, I'd have "playmates _and_ my mind would be stimulated daily... I know which metaphorical pillow my head would rest on!)
I honestly think these octopuses already are knowing what's going on and what these things are. They're just like, "lemme gon head and do this real quick so that they can give me a snack and leave me alone"
That’s my ball!
How cute 😊
1:09 MIIINEEE!!!
I have seen a couple of videos now. Just subscribed. Greetings from Dimboola in Victoria, Australia.
Octopus Will never balling
Isn't reaching in the basket when the ball is already there illegal goaltending?
True
Seems to really like the ball! Wonder if its the colour or texture in particular?
I seriously didn’t realize how small these guys are!! They are too cute!
Octopus: "hmmm do dee dumm....huh?"
*enter basketball*
Octopus: "hold my beer!"
Yo when the octopus started sizing up the rim I thought he was about to do a self alleyoop
8 pointer!
But who doesn't like a nice ball😂
Time To Play Basket Ball!
Why was Larry holding his mantle so stiffly upright at around 2:05? Is that a posture that has some underlying meaning or just a different kind of thinking pose?
Mine🏀 🐙
Mine 🏀🐙
Mine 🏀🐙
How about a react to those baby play gyms or a play mat. Things with spinners and rattles and other interactive toys.
Hello, thank you for posting this.
One question, did you fill the ball with water?
Eventually, Larry learnt to dribble. :)
I really would appreciate if you could test what ground (don't know the right term) he prefers. A square with fluff, one with massage buckles, one with sand, etc
He got an octo double today
For a next experiment, dunk the ball in the basket and then drop a clam. See if Octo will try to replicate the result.
1:10 who else said MINE! lol
Two thumbs up! 👍 👍 so funny!
Y'all should do a video on how one would react to a mirror
Have you tried underwater speakers to see how they react to voices and music?
I'm looking for a whistle for goaltending at 2:22...... Where is it???? He had eight legs on the ball after it was above the rim....
Lol This is MY ball
woah i never realised how small they were
I thought I was in for a behind the back slam dunk. Sadly, he is not the MJ of octopuses.
Roundy shapes sure are friendly
How did you set up such a cool environment for the Octopus? An underwater basketball court! Impressive!
Go Larry go!! The music for this was fantastic. I have seen the video with different genres of music being played but have you ever given them a situation to play music/sounds on their own? Give them control of a sound board of sorts? If this has been done, sorry for asking, I didn't find any example of it.
Audio engineer here. It’s been scientifically proven that octopodes can only detect sounds from about 1-600cps. Any music they like would sound very muddy and bass-intensive to us.
Ironically, out of the water, it would sound like music being played underwater.
But I like the idea of giving an octopus control of a simple sampler, with some kick and snare rhythms to choose from, and some tom fills, and some simple mix-and-match bass tracks with a couple mid-bass intensive sounds (for some reason I imagine occies liking round, muted, fingerpicked bass tones with mid-high gain and a little bit of low-frequency fuzz on there. That, or perhaps a doubled synth tone with a sawtooth wave with 7-22ms attack, 1.76s of sustain/decay, 2ms release time, and polyphonics turned OFF.
Both basses should be connected directly into the mixing desk/software with DI preamps, with the fuzz boxes connected as insert effects, those preamps input gain set in such a way that the loudest bass notes you will play on the song push the meters into the red. Then set the faders on your mixing desk so that when the bass thumps into the red on your preamp, it peaks at -24 dB on your channel strip. Then add your compressor; set the the ratio to 4:1 or maybe 7:1, depending on how good your bassist is. Set the ‘knee’ to ‘sharp’ if there’s an option. Set the threshold to where you can hit that super-loud, super heavy note without pushing your meters into the red. Now push your fader back up to where that loud note peaks at -24 on your channel strip.
Octopus Jordan 😎
Die Stimmungs-färbungen waren interessant und so viele. schade, dass diese nicht mit Untertitel versehen waren.
I'm sure I would agree!😀🐙✌
@@mookyo9602 hahaha 😂🐙
It’s good
Hahaha excellent comment a bit wordy but GREAT!!!😀🐙✌
Brilliant&Athletic!!!
😘This Chick is in LOVE!!!😘
"Hmmm.. Hammock".
How old will they get and where do u get new probands from?
