Octopus Reacts to Basketball - Episode 11

  • What do octopuses and basketballs have in common? They both go right through nets :P
    In today's episode of Octopus Reacts, Larry, our octopus, gears up for a quick game of basketball. What initially started as a fun little game quickly turned into an episode when we saw his fascination with both the ball and the net. You'll notice his handler had a very difficult time taking the ball away from him. In fact, the ball remains with Larry to this day!
    We will continue working with Larry on the court. Using positive reinforcement, we're attempting to teach him to put the ball through the hoop. We'll definitely be posting another basketball video if we manage to get anywhere with this. Larry may not be ready for the NBA just yet, but octopuses are fast learners!
    The song is the "Sorry Boyz Music" take on the old public domain classic, "Sweet Georgia Brown"

      I can't image they would like nets. I wish I had the time and resources to build 2 tanks with all kinds of unique color schemes and then create challenging escape routes between tanks and enjoy watching a real octopus once they get comfortable enough to try everything out. but I don't so Im glad that this channel is here. If or when I get in a different place then it would be awesome to do.

    I want an octopus. If I just had a large aquarium with one in it that I could watch, I believe I would get to sleep pretty quickly. Their slow motion and how their tentacles unroll and roll perfectly. The way they carefully touch a thing and their inquisitiveness. Relaxing. Yes, I want a octopus.

    Choose snack A (his favorite snack) and snack B (a snack he likes a bit less). Then, give him snack B, and a few minutes later, give him snack A. Later, give him first snack A and once he has finished it, nothing. Repeats both versions several times. Then, finally, give him the choice of both snacks (in separate spaces so he cannot "think" that he can get both of them), and we'll manage to see if he refrains his desire of eating snack A and eat snack B (which he likes less) instead to get an additional better snack a few minutes later. We'll see if our friend has a sense of ressource management !

    I was going to suggest you try again but dunking the ball directly into the net, whilst simultaneously releasing his favourite snack. Then I read you're training him to "score" using positive reinforcement, so I think we're on the same page! I'd love to see it when he finally clicks and understands the purpose of ball and net 😆 It's hilarious that he's still got the ball, though. I wonder if he's seeing it as something else that would be found in his natural environment?
    (Don't worry, I'm not saying he should be released. I understand that behaviour and other aspects of octopus life need studying if we're to protect their wild cousins. Besides, were I a wild animal who was able to choose between the typical daily stresses of my natural environment and a safe haven where there was no chance of me being someone's dinner (including humans!), food would be regular, I'd have "playmates _and_ my mind would be stimulated daily... I know which metaphorical pillow my head would rest on!)

    Go Larry go!! The music for this was fantastic. I have seen the video with different genres of music being played but have you ever given them a situation to play music/sounds on their own? Give them control of a sound board of sorts? If this has been done, sorry for asking, I didn't find any example of it.

    • @riphopfer5816
      @riphopfer5816 3 роки тому +1

      Audio engineer here. It’s been scientifically proven that octopodes can only detect sounds from about 1-600cps. Any music they like would sound very muddy and bass-intensive to us.
      Ironically, out of the water, it would sound like music being played underwater.
      But I like the idea of giving an octopus control of a simple sampler, with some kick and snare rhythms to choose from, and some tom fills, and some simple mix-and-match bass tracks with a couple mid-bass intensive sounds (for some reason I imagine occies liking round, muted, fingerpicked bass tones with mid-high gain and a little bit of low-frequency fuzz on there. That, or perhaps a doubled synth tone with a sawtooth wave with 7-22ms attack, 1.76s of sustain/decay, 2ms release time, and polyphonics turned OFF.
      Both basses should be connected directly into the mixing desk/software with DI preamps, with the fuzz boxes connected as insert effects, those preamps input gain set in such a way that the loudest bass notes you will play on the song push the meters into the red. Then set the faders on your mixing desk so that when the bass thumps into the red on your preamp, it peaks at -24 dB on your channel strip. Then add your compressor; set the the ratio to 4:1 or maybe 7:1, depending on how good your bassist is. Set the ‘knee’ to ‘sharp’ if there’s an option. Set the threshold to where you can hit that super-loud, super heavy note without pushing your meters into the red. Now push your fader back up to where that loud note peaks at -24 on your channel strip.
