Hey Rob! Thank you!!! I've heard the screw called a "shaker-head". Strapcode uses them in some bracelets as well. It decouples the rotation of the pin and bracelet, so the screws will not loosen. I'm working on making the slots deeper in the heads :)
I had the hardest time trying to get those screws out, couldn't get it. My fine precision screwdrivers wouldn't work so I ended up bring it to a jeweler. Got it sized and good to go but those screw heads need to be deeper, almost impossible for the normal everyday guy with 40+ yr old eyes.
Marc did his homework and spent a lot of time and took a chance. I don't own one, but thinking about it. It's probably the best bang for the buck in this class of watch. No desire to mod. I'm impressed that you reviewed it. I happen to like the all black one, it's a bit more and not on bracelet which for me is fine.
This is one of the two I presently own...I’ve purchased two of these… Gave one away as a gift So I could justify buying another one! Mark has made the watch that we all wanted Seiko to make. And SKX with a sapphire crystal, A quality bracelet with solid end links and a milled clasp...Ceramic lumed bezel, And cool color choices...Upgraded hacking and handwinding...And it’s still a real dive watch...Seiko Turned The SKX into a dive ‘style’ Fashion watch Otherwise known as the 5KX…Mark is now the keeper of the SKX! Just purchased this (9/20/20) can't wait to get it. I purchased this for the reasons being sapphire crystal, hacking and winding ability, lumed dial and the most favorite reason.... my Detroit Lions colors. Thank you for making such a gorgeous timepiece.
I got one of these before they sold out. It’s awesome. Happy to support Marc. I had a little trouble removing the links. You do need the smallest screwdriver possible.
That is by far the best looking blue dial dive watch in the market today . I hope Marc releases the same watch in quartz version with s soft silicone strap . I'd buy the first one off the assembly line .
This blue diver would look absolutely fantastic on something like a light blue ZULUDIVER 284 Italian Rubber strap. Number one pick for a future Islander purchase.
I have this watch that I put on a strapcode Angus Jubilee bracelet that I had for my skx009 so I have no experience with this bracelet but the watch head itself is amazing. It's been running about -4 seconds a day for me which is awesome accuracy. The blue is an awesome color and I love the satinized chapter ring that in my opinion doesn't directly match the dial but accents it beautifully. Awesome lume, I'm a lume junkie and I actually adore the lume bleeding through at night. The bezel is still completely legible even with the bleeding of lume. It looks dynamic in every lighting condition. I think my next watch will be the 🐢 style islander because although I am in love with this color it clashes hard when you wear any other color (if that's something you care about).
I love great lume also. The Angus Jubliee is a fantastic bracelet. Bought a Seiko SKX 009J from Marc and installed a Hexad bracelet to give it a more beefier look!
@@duke6j that's a great bracelet too, I went with the Angus jubilee because I like the mixture of brushed with polished but I also wanted something more substantial that would make the watch feel more evenly weighted. I think I'll get the turtle style watch that Marc has and fit it with the Engineer bracelet
I am really glad to see someone review these islander watches, they seem to be one of the best for your money dive watches the way the SKS should have been upgraded to.
Thanks for the heads up on the bracelet pins, I had to buy a cheap set of screwdrivers from amazon. Once I had the correct size tool it was super easy 👍🏻
This is like your watch forum buddy who you know knows his stuff makes a watch. He has spent the same amount of hours looking, reading, thinking and breathing the same watch thoughts as yourself. $299? That's worth the R&D costs for this delivery alone!!
Note: I posted this randomly on JOMW and realized it was sort of a useful comment on Islanders, rather than just ranting about lume. Figured I’d post it in more logical places, too. I don’t quite understand the obsession with Lume. For years I have worn a succession of Vostok Amphibia watches to bed. Why that watch? When you wear something in your sleep, they can and do tend to get banged around, and occasionally even smashed- at Vostok prices, I just replace the thing. But the lume worked perfectly; any time I woke up in the middle of the night, I could check the time quite easily and determine if it made sense to try to get back to sleep, without having to wake up and fumble for a watch on my bedside, or whatever. With all the government lucre that came my way during the pandemic, when it came time to replace my night watch (this time my wife put it on top of the medicine cabinet to charge the lume, opened the door to the cabinet, let it bounce off the sink and on to the floor, and... well time for a new watch) I decided to 1) determine what all the fuss with the NH36 was when I was pretty sure it was just a hacking (useful) and hand winding (silly on a magic lever) 7S36, and 2) Check out those really cool looking Long Island Watch takes on the SKX. So I ordered one. I suspect if Jody was to review it, it would do well- it checks all the boxes that seem to impress him. But, oh god, the lume. No, its not... bad. Its... amazingly bright. Which is the problem. It’s too damned bright! My wife complained it would wake her up, and when I would wake up to use it... well, yeah it’s visible. It hurt my eyes, its so visible. It tended to cause me to wake up further. I can not, for the life of me, come up with a useful reason for watch lume this bright. On top of that, the NH36/4R movement is quite apparently a 7S36 with a hacking function and a redundant hand-wind function, including the famously crappy 7S36 regulation, time keeping, component finish, slap-dash balance wheel, shotgun lubrication work and so on (can you tell I serviced the thing? It needed it!). Both Sea-Gull and Vostok bottom ends of production are superior, let alone when you go up the ladder on either brand. Not commenting specific to Islanders; all low end Seiko movements are kind of crappy in build quality. Anyway, too much lume. Please note, I am not attacking Long Island Watch. The model I have is really cool looking. A product should be judged by what it is intending to be; Mark set out to provide an upgraded SKX with brighter lume, a superior bracelet, nicer fittings, and the upgrades the NH36 provides over the 7S26. The Islander is all of those things. Mark is good at figuring out what people tend to want to buy, and supplying it to them at a good price with excellent customer service. He succeeds with the Islander, truly. I just don’t quite understand why people want some of those things, particularly lume intensity that is retina-searing when viewed by somebody who has just woken up in a pitch-black room. Its a beautifully made watch, honestly, and to quote Abraham Lincoln, “If you like this sort of thing, you will find it the sort of thing you like.” It just never occurred to me that ‘superior’ lume would make the watch bad for my purposes.
How's the bezel action on your example?? Mine is really not that great. Very difficult to turn. I love what Marc is doing and have bought two of the islanders in the last month. This one and the 38mm Pepsi. While their designs are really nice both are not without their issues. The 38mm bracelet is almost useless because the pins are so tight in the bracelet they simply refuse to come out. I gave up sizing my band after breaking 3 tips from my pin removal tool. I could get one link out and even with it pushed out 80 percent of the way I required a pair of pliers to grab it and pull it the rest of the way out. Ive sized many a watch with pins and never had near the trouble I've had with that band. The bezel on it isn't so great either. the clicks are very mushy and different areas as it spins requires different amount of pressure to spin it. Ie its fairly easy to turn most of the way but between 6 and 3 it gets harder to turn. And the back play is excessive. In various areas of the rotation I can push it back between 3 and 5 min. The blue dial watch looks killer. It's bracelet is ok and was easy enough to size with the right size driver. The bezel action on it is extremely difficult to turn but there are solid clicks and no backplay. Both watches chapter rings line up well. I really love the looks of both watches in their own way and was not sure what size to get for my petite wrist so I figured Id try both. Overall I really like them but think quality control atm seems to be a tad hit or miss in some areas. A few written reviews especially for the 38mm sizes show that.
Sorry Rob. Gotta disagree on the orange Seiko 5 and the Seiko SKX011. But, your right, it’s all subjective. But I love my SKX011 and when I received it, it was so much better than the hype to me. I would definitely love to get a hold of that yellow Islander though. I’m constantly scanning the web for the SKXA35.
You should look at the sharkey/heimdallr SKX style watches. They are around $160-190 and have similar specs to the islander (NH35, Sapphire, ceramic bezel, solid endlinks, milled clasp) and they offer bronze versions. The only downside I've seen is that the newer batches use a different system for the bezel clicks, so after market bezels won't work (but the bezel inserts do).
What factory are these made in does anyone know , some serious mark up for a micro brand , Deep Blue is much more reasonable for comparable appointments
Love these watches, gorgeous. He's supposed to be releasing another style islander watch very soon. I don't know if it's going to a dress watch, or another diver that is different than an skx homage. I don't know but I am anxious to see one. I'm torn between an islander and an orient Kamasu for my next purchase.
Beautiful shade of blue on this watch. I waffled back and forth...and now they’re sold out unfortunately. Maybe that’s a good thing, as I prefer a 39mm - 40mm. Still a great looking watch though. Enjoy it!!
