    Loving the wood cladding you guys!! It's amazing how quickly a van can start to feel like a home with something as simple as some wood :) Keep on crushing your build XX

    I am amazed at the fabulous job you are doing with this van. That wood cladding is absolutely gorgeous.
    The framing around the little window and the UA-cam plaque are so refined. Also, from the previous video, I love what you did with the door step.
    It’s these little touches that you and your guests will appreciate many years into the future.
    Thanks for all the work you put into filming and editing to show us all the great little details.
    Keep On Truckin’

    A little tip for you guys ....If you need to nail close to the edge of beading, cladding, a trim piece you made strike the point of the nail with the hammer to blunt it it really does work. A point goes between the fibers and the split will run to the edge of your work, a blunt nail well cut the fibers and not split the work. Loving the build ...Diesel Dave

    Really good choice guys to keep the natural lightness of the cladding = otherwise such a confined space can become too oppressive if stained darker + it gives you more options on styling front.

    I stained my pine tongue and groove floorboards with a tea infusion, it gives it that warm rustic feel, and then sealed with a clear varnish over the top. Staggering them too helps to prevent that straight edge right across, and makes less waste wood too. The edging you could just glue if you don’t have any panel pins. But you’re going to get a fantastic result guys!

    I installed cladding without showing the nails by putting then in the groove of the cladding at a 45 degree angle and the using a nail punch to make sure they didn't stick out too far. Took longer but didn't have to buy the tabs you guys used.

  • @kf-dk5pb
    @kf-dk5pb 6 років тому

    Wow guys your doing a quality job and you work together so well. Glad you decided on lighter walls as darker stains can look nice but in a small area as I’m sure you’ve noticed in other vans, can be a little “trying to find the right word” dingy, if you know what I mean without coming across as negative.
    Well done I’m really loving the build one of the best I’ve seen.

    lighten up the walnut by adding the really light stain you can mix stains to create your own shade just do it in a mindful way so you are noting the ratios of stains for the final recipe. **edit** just saw that you chose the natural colour which I think looks pretty awesome I prefer it to staining perhaps you could stain the detail strips that cover the joins. You are doing a great job thanks for documenting and posting these vids.

    Hi guys, sprinter is looking great! Not wanting to be negative but I am concerned that you may not of treated the reverse side of the cladding!
    The reflectix is your moisture barrier so any moisture that is trapped between that and the cladding could cause the dreaded mould to appear!
    This is also even more likely to happen to the ceiling boards. I am no expert on this so I could be mistaken, but it does bother me.
    Good luck with the rest of the build!

      Im doing so, just today I oiled the first couple of wood pieces, cut them jus t abit bigger, so I dont waste too much oil, and I can cut each wood piece to the perfect side.!!, with an oil to protect kitchen tops, anyways, the joins and some part will be not oiled. I hope this is not working in vain!!.. Im using the same osmo poli, but it was 40€ for 750ML, so Im using it for the side of the wood facing the inside of the van.

    Probably a silly question, but you seal all the walls up and make it water tight, but then have to screw the battens in. Does this not then make it not water right, although i guess minimal risk? Also noticed that doing it this way creates an air gap between the tongue and groove and the insulation, is this on purpose as the foil wrap needs air, but I would of thought that would of needed it on the opposite side? Thanks Nicola :)

Quick question, i really want to use cladding clips for a nice clean finish but I’ve read that they can be a bit flimsy, especially on the ceiling and people say they could bend out of place. Looks great! two questions, will there be any interaction between the stainless steel screws and the steel body of the van? And are you confident that the cladding clips are strong enough/for the ceiling as well? Also taking into consideration of wanting to screw through the cladding into the battens for other framing and support ontop, am concerned that the cladding clips will get in the way, thanks!

    Has the Spruce had the water content removed , kiln dried ? How will you deal with additional shrinkage . I went with Hardwood Ply as have seen many vans where shrinkage opened up the gaps :(

    • @theindieprojects
      @theindieprojects  6 років тому +1

      Am fairly sure the water content has been removed in the process of creating the cladding, the osmo oil will also help against shrinkage but there’s always the risk of the wood changing over the years which is something we’re prepared for 😊

    • @Island_Times
      @Island_Times 6 років тому

      Thats good to know, i did my conservatory floor in it (Wickes i believe i got it from) when i lived in the UK, its shrank too all hell, came close to ripping it out , but i came up with a cool fix to hide the ugly gaps by chasing in some nice twine (like thin rope) into the gaps. It ended up making it quite the feature :)
      Thanks for the reply toooooo ! :)

    • @twist555
      @twist555 6 років тому +2

      I used to work at Wickes and went on a training course with their timber supplier and Ronseal. The kiln dried timber still has anywhere up to something like 18% water/moisture content I believe it is. To reduce shrinkage and warp it's VITAL both sides of the wood are pained/stained/oiled etc. Leaving one side exposed will actually speed up the process believe it or not. On engineered woods, i.e. plywood/mdf/OSB this isn't so much of a problem..
      Hopefully this might help if you never decide to lay more cladding..

    • @Island_Times
      @Island_Times 6 років тому

      OMG , so it really was that bad then O.o , feeding in the rope into the gaps with a steel scraper did make it look quite plush though :)

  • @corallaroc

    Absolutely a good idea, to have a piece of wood painted with the varnish. Although, the resulting colour would depend on the type of wood so maybe it wouldn't be an accurate representation if you're using a different type of wood? They would have to put it on several types of wood I guess to be accurate. Still, even painted on a couple of pieces would give a better idea than none at all!

    Brilliant job, the pine tgv boards will turn orange after a little while regardless of what varnish you use, depending on the amount of sunlight it receives, might be worth going for a lime wash type colour, nice and bright and still rustic ,
    Also another consideration is your vans gross weight, after fitting furniture water tanks batteries ect you will be getting close to the 950kg load weight ( with a full fuel tank ) that is

    Great video no build! Perhaps use the darker wood for accents? Great idea for UA-cam 100K button !

      Thanks Sue! Yeah we’re thinking it would be nice to use on smaller patches to separate the wood from other areas which will look really nice 😊

    Definitely better that you used screws instead of nails for those clips, nails would most likely work their way back out with van movement.

    You would of been fine just using some no nails glue instead of the pins. The almond stain was nicest of what you showed us. You made the right choice going clear coat though

      We’re happy we went clear in the end as it still feels really light in there 😊
