    once you apply a first coat are the lines gone?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 роки тому +1

      No, it took several applications to smooth it out. Printing at .1 layer height may help speed up the smoothing process.

    Did the smoothed print ever dry? or was it always tacky?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  3 роки тому +3

      Dried solid. Super glossy too!

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  3 роки тому +2

      Worked the best for me. Just takes a little more patience. Even better would be a light sanding and then the spray method if you are looking for super-smooth and glossy

    Hi, im new to this 3D print stuff. Question: If I wanted to paint this Vader statue, what type of paint is recommended for it? Thanks!

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  11 місяців тому +1

      I think just about any paint will work. If you plan on using PVB filament, like what is used in this video, I would stay away from alcohol paints. But acrylic paint and spray paint should be fine.

    Great test! Do you know if this is more heat resistant than PLA? I need something that is more rigid than PETG but can also survive a day in a hot car.

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 роки тому +1

      Your best bet for car parts is either ABS or nylon. You will need an all-metal hot end to print it, though. I doubt PVB is heat resistant as it prints at the same temperature as PLA

    • @-Ricochet-
      @-Ricochet- 2 роки тому

      @@SouthpawWorkshop Well, ABS stinks and nylon is too floppy. And both are a PITA to print. The search for an easy to print but durable material continues I guess. Thanks for confirming.

      @@-Ricochet- maybe try one of the heat-treatable or heat-resistant PLAs

      @@-Ricochet- Try ASA maybe. Harder to print than PLA but its UV resistant and bit more heat resistant than PETG.

    Can you share your print settings? How did they compare to PLA?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  3 роки тому +1

      Prints just like PLA. Normal temperatures, normal speeds.

    I need a comparison between this and polysmooth. they're like 10-20$ apart but this cheaper filament looks exactly the same...

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  3 роки тому +5

      Pretty much the same thing. But I haven’t found any actual tests to prove it.

    Hello, you should test with a paint gun for miniatures. It's very cheap, provided you already have the compressor. The advantage is that you can dose the amount of air and a lot of air mixed with the alcohol dries faster.

    no matter what i try, I cant seem to get this stuff to polish like it did in your video. Ive tried airbrushing the 99% alcohol, dipping in the alcohol, brushing the alcohol… nothing. surface is still rough. Any ideas?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  8 місяців тому +1

      What layer height did you print? Are you using this specific brand or a different brand? I suspect performance varies between brands

    • @braintrust12
      @braintrust12 8 місяців тому

      @@SouthpawWorkshop I used .1 layer height, and Yousu black PVB (just like yours.) I used 99% IPA. I tried brushing, spraying, dipping... nothing seems to work.

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  8 місяців тому

      Sounds like you are doing it right. I sprayed it on heavy and let it dry on its own. Maybe you got a bad roll.

  • @ludovic2003
    @ludovic2003 2 роки тому +2

    Why not dip and then wash? Would that be more even?

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  2 роки тому

      Possibly, as long as it stays wet long enough to melt the surface. I like the control the sprayer gives me.

  • @bonesawisready684
    @bonesawisready684 3 роки тому +3

    I wonder how well the smoothing would work if you tried applying it with an airbrush. It would be aerosolizing the IPA, which is essentially what the Polymaker Polysher thing does, you just wouldn't have the chamber.

    • @SouthpawWorkshop
      @SouthpawWorkshop  3 роки тому +2

      Might work, but remember, the smaller the droplet of alcohol, the faster it evaporates. The reason Polysher doesn’t have that problem is because it is in a closed system.

    • @braintrust12
      @braintrust12 8 місяців тому +1

      @@SouthpawWorkshop yeah i can confirm, the airbrush method has been the worsed so far. i think it's partially because of the reason you mentioned, but also if you live in a high humidity area and brush outside, your compressor is going to pick up water in the air and spray it on to the print. as far as I can tell, any amount of water absolutely destroys the print surface

  • @w1llowsworld

    It's not great so far for me I'm like double that amount of alcohol spray on a small temp tower.
