- Tahoe's storm patterns have resulted in accumulation levels not seen since the 1951-52 season-and in some cases, surpassing the highest totals ever recorded. In this video, we’ll go through the most insane aspects of heading to Tahoe for a ski trip this season-both positive and negative-and how they might impact your ski vacation.

This season for California has been like one of those cursed genie wishes, like you get what you want technically, but there is some sort of catch that ends up screwing you.
It’s still so satisfying seeing all of the annoying European skiiers who always sh*t on North American snow, mountains, and lifts have to eat their words with California and Colorado skiing being way better than the Michigan snow accumulation they are getting in Europe. North American skiiing has always been on par if not better than the Alps, and this season has cemented that point, with European mountains looking more like golf courses than ski destinations
Monkey's paw
You're exactly right haha gotta be from around here to know this though our main road is i80 haha but this year has been nuts since what 2004
My name is Genie and I live in Truckee.
I glanced at your comment, had to look twice… cursed Genie wish? Did I make a wish? 😮 no doubt and definitely messed with.
the Squaw parking lot attendant said one morning…. it’s like mother nature is angry and said here take that and that and that and that.
Whoever was PRAYING for SNOW this year was obviously FASTING also !😂. I was SNOWED IN my home for 14 days straight. I had electricity, THANK GOD !!! But No WIFI service, which means no cable for TV, and no landline phone service. I had to walk about a half mile to get food. So PLEASE be nice to the locals. We have been through A LOT. STAY SAFE. 👍🙏😎
Amen!!!
Nobody cares!!!
Sorry 😅…
I wished for snow at my home resort after the rain storm of december 30th.
That road closure sign gave me flashbacks
This is a very, very good video with a narration that thoroughly covers it all. Excellent job whoever you are. Will leave Sacramento early Thursday morning to take my chances hoping for the best. Going to treat the hammered Tahoe residents well.
In our family we are mostly June Mtn. & Mammoth people. But we live here and love the Sierras. So this report was valuable as a Sierra report.
My late wife was a Tahoe bird. I wish she could have seen this.
Thank you. Very practical!
Great review and overview of this crazy winter and to approach the Sierras this winter.
yea I went skiing there after not going for 6 years, messed up my knees within 5 min and because the weather the mountain shut down within the hr…crazy
@@isaacsee3807 damn!
I live nearby but haven't been up in over a month now. When the weather is clear on the weekend, traffic this season has been absolutely insane. I heard that the number of cars on the weekend has doubled vs previous years. I might be able to make it this weekend but we will see. Unfortunately you have to already be there to take advantage of the best conditions otherwise the road is either closed or it's pretty much impossible to get there. It's snowing now but when the weather clears Thursday it's going to be sunny and 46.
Awesome video, thats an insane how much snow they have gotten! I saw you guys visited Wildcat on the east coast, when is the video for that coming out?
Did a 3 day strike mission two weekends ago. Giant storm of course. Saturday, only lower part of Heavenly opened, super crowded. Resorts closed Sunday, not too bad considering how crowded it would have been with little to no vis. Monday reopened and ended up being all time. Champagne powder. Nothing like last March. Lifts to Canyon and Sky were closed days prior so was all untouched when we got up there. Gotta get lucky and enjoy that visitor's bliss. Family living there this season so stayed with them. Couldn't imagine living in those conditions especially being from Hawaii. To get in/get out was mind blowing and amazing though.
Great video btw. I was there for that Feb dry oeriod for my trip, and it's been weekend after weekend that we're snowed out. Majority of blue days post storms have been weekdays. Wish I knew someone who tracked it
Ahhhhhh was up there for president's day weekend. It was amazing!
There is so much snow that the roofs of houses and supermarkets are caving in. Ski resorts have been closed a lot this season, staff will dig out and then next storm rolls in and renders the previous dig out moot again
I was worried my trip for Late-March might be too two weeks to late. Turns out it was two months too early.
Late March is generally when the snowpack peaks here, except for when it doesn't, ha.
You covered that well. This season has not been the best for me as there were so many closures. Sometimes the entire ski area is closed, or when it does open there is limited terrain. Today the entire ski area is closed because of rain and wind. In some of the past big years, there seemed to be less closures and a few more sunny days between storms to enjoy it. It's all good though.
That's why I ski on storm days at the resort with the highest base elevation, we've hardly had any closed days.
@@bjbhehir That would be Mt Rose. Main base 8260', Bottom of Chuter Chair 7900'. I figure the wind up there would close lifts more often.
@@grizzkid795 there are definitely wind holds but we've been really lucky this season. They've added a new Lakeview Chair lift that can run when the other lifts are closed.
Utahs seasons is also crazy just went there wanna def come here in June after trying 2 years ago at Palisades and there was nothing!
Just got here today. Going to Palisades tomorrow. Not psyched about the recent rain but still hopeful
Palisades is a sheet of ice Enjoy 😢
I’am here right now as we speak
I think today was my 115th day this season, my new goal is 150 days with Alpine and Mammoth staying open into July. The local resort I ski at mostly has the highest base elevation and has only been closed a few days. We never get any rain and it's been a really cold winter, the snow has been amazing every day but 1 day. I've been hoping for a blue bird groomer day but its been a pow day every day!! My legs need a rest!! It's been an amazing season except the typical Cali Mini Van screwing up traffic!!
THERE IS SO MUCH SNOW!!!
I have been in Tahoe for 12 days so far this season. We skied 7 of those 12 days. 2 were missed due to wind, 2 due to road closure and 1 due to rain.
The days that we did get to ski we had 2-3 days with temps in the mid 40s and sunny. One day of 3 to 8’ of powder. One day of heavy fresh snow. One day of 6” of light fluffy snow. And one day of light fluffy snow over top of ice. So the conditions have been very consistent.
Going up this weekend with the break in the snow and we are looking at 35-40 degrees and sunny days with mor snow coming on Sunday.
625” of snow at Sierra at Tahoe this year, 3rd most ever and still counting.
Think it would be possible to make it up from out of town? With traffic and roads etc??? Looks epic
@@selahpsalmist The last storm that came through was pretty warm so most of the roads and passes are pretty clear and the predicted weather is clear, so I don't see any road closure issues. Not much we can do about traffic, but we leave tonight, so we will miss most of the traffic and will only have to deal with the traffic from the place we are staying to the resort. I don't think it will be too bad. Going to Palisades or Northstar may be a bit worse as they tend to have more traffic.
@@mr2fyre thanks for the info, Enjoy the snow show!
I go to Tahoe 5 times a year I live close , drownings in the summer and skiing skiing accidents in the winter are no stranger to this area . I was in Tahoe on January 1998 celebrating my birthday at a local casino when I got word that Sonny Bono had a skiing accident and passed away
And your point???
800 inches of snow in 2017 at Sugar Bowl resort in Tahoe... it hasn't even snowed that much yet this year.
3:53 is so true. I went to Tahoe and got lost like 4 times because the signs were under the snow.
Yes there is such a thing as way to much snow. Tahoe got it this winter.
I live in tahoe. levels in north tahoe are insane. Almost very weekend is a pow day.
HAHA I remember seeing u guys at the end of the day at Alpine when we were walking down the stairs I wanted to say hi but i was to shy:(. You guys are amazing!!
Say hi next time!
@@PeakRankings sure will:)
There about to get so much flooding in the spring/ early summer
Since I am not 79 years old, I guess I did not see the last high. I have seen some big highs. Often it is how much gets blown into a pile by snow blowers. There has been a lot of snow this year though.
All true, so much snow, impossible to reach unless you’re a local. We need better roads and tunnels under the passes!
This is "Donner Party" levels of snow, right?
This is La Niña I've heard. And next year will be El Niño.
Bloomberg and the LA Times ran 2022 articles declaring an end to Sierra snow. Maybe I need better search skills but I can't find their mea culpas.
Now if only Epic pass will follow suit and allow next years pass to apply to spring skiing...
not happening
while in bulgaria we are happy when it snows 12 cm in a whole week at 2600m at peak season
That insane bouncing basketball type sound you use for your transitions scare the everliving shit out of me every time, jesus christ
It happened in the 1960's. Twice...
Don't park your car in a "Tow Away Zone"... that includes grocery store parking lots, they clear the snow away at night. Make use of local bus lines, taxi cabs, and just park your car. Be safe, if you are not accustomed to driving in the snow call a cab, they are everywhere at Lake Tahoe.
Ikr
The lodging is NOT that much cheaper currently for April and May IMO. Short-term rental and resorts know why you're going.
Also, Ikon 23/24 access in CA starts April 10th, after Easter Weekend.
It sucks because there is no good days to be able to go up and play in it!!! its just storm after storm...
"What's that sign mean? Who knows?"
So Tahoe sucks no matter how you skin the cat? That’s how I interpreted this video. If there’s no snow you’ll have less than ideal conditions due to the large infrequent snow events. If there’s too much snow you can’t even get to the hill because of road closures and proximity to large population centers creates traffic jams and long lift lines? Sounds like a great time.
That's not even the big snow in California. Mammoth Ski Resort has 618 inches on the ground. That's 51 and a half FEET.
utah is way crazier. the whole valley is probably gonna flood this summer. the snow is better for riding too. super extreme
Avoid the trees, hitting the wrong tree well equals gone forever
meanwhile in europe: 😢
It is always very telling when people from SoCal and the Bay Area come to Tahoe and underestimate the road construction and spin out because they took their tesla with summer tires. Yet all the residents who drive Jeeps, Subarus, and trucks are just fine.
Avalanches will be out of control in the next few days
Tahoe has anomalous CALORS. It has insane steeps and elongated pitches full of no fall zones. The CALORS have vast bowl coverage, CALORS
What are CALORS?
First
Curse you global warming,
But the people from POW (Protect Our Winters) told me that snowfall was decreasing every year and by 2050 there will be no ski resorts open. Are they going to switch to POS (Protect Our Summers)? what a bunch of quacks.
Well if you live in PA or anywhere south of NY on the East, you would soon know the feeling of having to say goodbye to local ski resorts forever.
on the east coast we've had a terrible winter. it's been bad in most other places, there were just some extra storms.
@@adrienguinebertiere you guys should give half your paycheck to POW. They fixed CA and the West Coast resorts for ya..
Global warming has affected snow totals to some extent, but consistent cold weather has started to become less and less reliable, especially at lower elevations. Even resorts farther North on the East coast have seen an abnormal amount of rain and down here in Northwest CT, there have been some weeks where it has not dropped below 50 degrees.
Tahoe may be having a great season now, but last year there was almost no accumulation between January to March.
Temperatures are rising. Tahoe has been warm for a long time now to the point where only higher elevations reliably get snow, and infact the last few storms over the weekend it was actually raining and causing a lot of problems. We may continue to get storms but the issue is will it still be cold enough to snow.
MAMMOTH SAYS THEY WILL BY OPEN FOR JULY 4 WEEKEND GUARANTEE 😂.
We ain't Tahoe.
THIS YEARS CONTEST TO SEE WHO STAYS OPEN THE LONGEST IS BETWEEN MAMMOTH AND SNOWBIRD. CALIFORNIA VS UTAH .
The less dense snow of the Wasatch will settle down to a shallower base in the Spring. Mammoth will have top to bottom skiing well into July if they decide to stay open.
@@grizzkid795 , snowbird/Alta has been averaging around 8% water , there has only been one storm under 5% water , a couple storms have been 12% water , which does not happen much . Alta will be getting over 700 inches this year , maybe even 800 , that and it will be cooler longer in Utah . It will be interesting to see how long it lasts . 720 inches is 60 feet of snow , Alta is looking at getting over 60 ft. Of snow which is incredible.
@@tt55k Mammoth has announced they will be open "at least" until the end of July, so the bar is set. I remember one year they were open in August.
@@grizzkid795 that is awesome 😎
@@tt55k I just looked at the California snow surveys for April 1st and a plot near Mammoth at 9400' has 246" of snow on the ground with 104" of water content!
