Mary Chapin Carpenter - Songs From Home Episode 54: A Keeper For Every Flame

- Welcome back friends, to Songs From Home…today’s tune is “A Keeper For Every Flame”...
I've received many requests for this song, from my 1994 album Stones In The Road…brushing up on it brought back memories of the wonderful Bias Studios in Northern Virginia and the many favorite musicians, artists and singers who took part in those sessions...
The song speaks to how differently we deal with heartbreak and the letting go that it requires…except some never do quite let go.
Cheers this past week for the news that our favorite legend Joan Baez is being honored by the Kennedy Center for the Kennedy Center Honors. In my opinion it is waaaaaay past due and so richly deserved - our country has endured tumultuous times in the past, and with the beacons of non-violence, peaceful protesters like Joan succeeded in illuminating many of the wrongs of those times. We still have a long way to go, but Joan has never given up, and we can all be inspired by that.
Speaking of beacons, Happy Martin Luther King Day tomorrow!
Until the next time, stay well, stay strong, wear your mask everywhere, carry on and #staymighty !

Thanks again Mary for your gifts of calm and beautiful music.
I remember being a teenager in the 90s and I would listen to you to fall asleep. You don't feel like an entertainer to me. You feel like an old friend.
Your song is an arrow into my heart. I am a keeper of a flame!
The songs from Stones In The Road bring back such happy memories of discovery and the power & beauty of possibility.
Thank you, Angus and white kitty for the warmth and the music.
🙂♥️
♥️ All songs from Stones In The Road bring back happy memories of discovery and the power and beauty of possibility.
MCC you look stunning . Love the lights . Thank you so much ..
A huge thanks to Bob Harris on UK radio who introduced me to your music!!
OH THANK YOU for this one!! I was wishing for it. Played it last night and sang my butt off. What a great song. And what a great treasure you are. I love you. Thanks again.... Tom in Vegas!!
Love love that song!! And yesss I do believe it!! 🥰🙏🌺
Great!
Beautiful and the music too. 😁👍
Thank you Mary.
Not gloomy here in New Zealand. And it just got brighter!
❤ I just cannot get this girls attention. Doesn’t seem fair I am probably one of the very biggest fans of her and I cannot communicate that to her in the years just keep going bye well one thing is the older she gets a better looking she is. ❤
Late to the party as I catch up on a few weeks that I missed, but thank you. Not a break-up song to me, but one that brought me a new view of it in the midst of this pandemic.
My first love and I reconnected after 30+ years only to discover that we drifted apart all those years ago because neither realized that the other felt the same way. We walled each walled that off to protect ourselves from heartache that we feared. Biggest regret of my life. As we've talked, we learned that we both kept that flame, a soft glow, this entire time. Through marriages and families, births and deaths, and everything that life brings. Time hasn't changed who either of us are in our souls. We fell so easily back into a strong friendship and share a special bond, a steady, eternal flame. It doesn't change our relationships with, or how we feel about, others in our lives. We simply are. We were never meant to burn bright or out of control, but to be true friends and are both so thankful to have recaptured that. We'll see one another again once it's safe to travel; first time in 35 years.
Sounds like a MCC song, doesn't it? If only I had that songwriting gift...
So good to hear it again....xxxxxxx
Thank you, pretty lady! 🎶🤗🎶
One of my favorites!
Awesome!
If it’s Sunday, it’s Songs From Home 😊. I can’ t imagine going through everything we have without this beacon of light shining on us every week. I have heard a few people say that the US will never be United again. I don’t believe that. We grow the most from our toughest days. I think it will take awhile, but as long as we all persist in shining light on the dark and keeping hope alive, we will heal. Stay strong and #staymighty! 💪🏻 Thank you Mary Chapin - hugs to you, Angus, and White Kitty 🥰💜 Peace to all
Amen!
Happy New Year Nurture, I hope you don’t mind my shortcut with your moniker? A year later and your comments are as pertinent now as a year ago or two hundred plus years ago. I swore off all political outlets about 10 days before Christmas. I decided that the Season deserves better and so I pushed it all to the side and chose that which I enjoy the most. Movies from years ago, music on my record players(4), feel good TV, and Ms. Mary’s music and the comments fans have shared. So much positive in the words that all share, such good tranquil feelings they give. Peace & Blessings to you
Songs from home beats meet the press any day. Beautiful song, lovely lady! Love the lights!! Thank you Mary!! 💚🌻
Thank you Mary, once again! Your music is as beautiful as ever! Sunday isn't complete without you! And coffee!!😊
Chapin, you are the perfect blend of Head AND Heart!
Fantastic
Another wonderful Sunday gift of music from MCC. Thank you ❤️🎶🔥
Each time I watch these, I soar to great heights listening to the music, and then my heart drops as I listen to your goodbyes, dreading that this may be the last Song From Home...I hold my breath until I hear the signature "we'll see you the next time". Then I can breathe again.
Thank you from Ottawa, Canada... and the depths of my heart.
Thank you... ❤️
A new day is here, it is January the 21st and we have turned the page......love this song.......there is a keeper for all of us....and America!!!!!!
Hi mary angus white kitty thanks mary for the music photos you brighten up the days stay safe thank you for the message please wear your mask everywhere 😊😊😊
You looked so at ease and happy today. I think you knowing what would brighten your day, like the lights on your Mom’s piano is another example of kindness to self. Maybe the walk with Angus and his unbridled joy made you a little frisky? 😊 Your wit sense of humor is as sharp as your music! Thank you for your generous spirit, your thoughtful writing prior to each song, for the Sunday respite and of course sharing your home, music and fur babies. Hopefully, you feel the love, admiration and gratitude from your community. 🥰🤩. The password for today is....hope. 🙋🏼♀️🐛🌸
Ms. Penny, Good words and thoughts shared a year ago and still keep their meanings a year later. Peace & Blessing

Love & prayers to you and to all who join in this magical Sunday gathering. Maureen (Sukanya & Nanda - my furry family)
No glad you are back!
In those eyes my goodness they tell a story. Very compassionate very sensual easy to romance. If you could ever get her attention
Hi Mary, thank you again. You are the sun on a gray day.
Hi Mary, hi Everyone, this has long been a favourite of mine and ‘Stones in the Road’ remains one of my favourite albums. Maybe it’s because it’s the first MCC album that I bought and so lead me to discover what a wonderful singer/songwriter you are. This song speaks to me of those that leave your life, but even if their love for you has died, yours hang and you keep a wish that all hope is not lost. Best wishes everyone, Angus and White Kitty. Stay mighty 😊
Thank you for the added charm of piano lights, the gift of song and the heart-warming smile! You make our Sunday mornings extra special!!
Thank you Marychapin you never disappoint , you have made my day again ,love to you and your furry family stay safe and well xx
An old favorite. Thanks for sharing.
Ahhh, didn’t realize how much I enjoyed this oldie, but goodie! Such bittersweet memories these lyrics invoke.
Just beautiful ! I wish I was there. Looks so peaceful. Thank you MCC for sharing the beauty with with us
Thank you Mary. I love this song. It was on one of the first Mary Chapin Carpenter CD;s I bought. I listened to those two CD's all day and still dig them out when I am going on a road trip. Thanks for the memories.
....so no one enters, but no one leaves... a line I hear in my head so often since I heard it first. The danger of protecting yourself so well that you can’t be reached and can’t reach anyone else. Wonderful as usual. Thank you.
Thanks. I always look forward to these posts.
Good afternoon, Mary, from me and my cat 🐈 in the Central Valley of Northern California where it is 70 F. Love your singing. Love your songwriting. And I love your guitar 🎸 playing. Bravo 👏. The lights on your piano 🎹 remind me of my mother decorating her Henry F. Miller mahogany console piano during the holidays 🎄. Thanks for the memory. May The Force Be With You.
Thank you... You are a bright spot to start the week that I treasure
Happiness to you MCC. Thanks!
Good morning Ms. Mary, The dawning of a new day brings its promise of a new beginning. The pale blue sky drifting down to a golden orange waiting for the sun to appear. A fog blankets the hills in the distance so only their ridges show. The trees are bare except for the pines. The lane bordered by a fence on each side takes its two tracks from tires into the distance and the world will be slowly waking with the Sun. All is quiet this time of day and year, still a small one by the pond tells us that there will be many tommorows as it grows tall and Mighty. I see this scene and I wonder what Robert Frost would think and say? I think I’ll get my book of his poems out and find one that does your scene proper. Breathe deep this crisp morning air, scratch Angus behind the ears, brush your hand over White Kitty’s soft fur and know that there is goodness in the air. Bless you for all you give so freely and may all that hear your songs gain a few moments of peace especially those who continue to give so much to fight to save lives from this unrelenting virus. Thank you Ms. Mary and Peace be with You.
Thank you Mary - Mike and I so enjoy the time listening to you. Your songs and thoughts have been with us throughout our lives together and are with us still. Stay mighty! J
yes, I can imagine that Angus is tired from walking. Many thanks for the 54th song from home. Stay healthy.❤🍀👍
I love your music and the great gift, you are giving to us every single week.
I have loved this song forever. A keeper for every flame applies to so many situations besides a romantic one. Keeping a family of older siblings connected after the death of parents, creating a spark of love and warmth that nourishes family and friends, and in these times keeping the flame of democracy glowing.
Thank you Mary for remembering us.......Greetings from San Luis Obispo
For a the love of God woman... Only a dream next please 😘
Thanks for being on the soundtrack to my life.... Come On, Come On needs a vinyl reissue SO badly....Only was released in Netherlands in 1992 and an original copy is going to set someone back $300-400. Please somehow make this happen!! An all analog remaster would be divine!
Thank you Mary for another songs from home. I am enjoying your new cd which I got fir Christmas. Starts my day as I listen to on my way to work
Mary, it is such a wonderful thing you are doing! I know you are soothing the souls of many. Our people need uplifting. The hearts of our so called leaders in both major parties are full hate for one another. It's like the old D. Warwick tune, "what the world needs now".
Keep singing your tunes it really helps me want to be a asset for our country and world, not part of a problem. Let's heal these hard hearts.
Thank you for the Sunday concert! I have loved every one. I love the Martin. I will get a Greven.
Thanks you for this it is beautiful especially on cold and rain day in January 👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I had forgotten that song. Thanks for playing it again. I need to get out some of your older albums and feel myself going back in time, to bittersweet memories. ❤️
Thank you, Mary. Loved it! So grateful for Sunday mornings with you. What a joy!
Sunday morning coffee, my dog nearby and Songs from Home = nothing better!! Much love to you, Angus, and White Kitty!! ❤️
Thank you so much!! I love this song 😍 you're amazing and so very appreciated 🎶😊🎶
SO GOOD as always. Thanks for helping to keep the flame burning through these times. It really helps.
Splendido paesaggio, come te e le tue canzoni. Grazie ancora per il regalo che ci fai ogni volta con la tua voce e il tuo sorriso. Che sia per ciascuno un momento di serenità. Buona vita a tutti!
Thank you Mary, for this wonderful song. I'm ashamed to say it, but I haven't heard this one before. The Martin guitar sounds beautiful and that reverberation sounds great too. I always like that. Thanks for your uplifting words and as always your sweet smile. Stay safe, stay mighty and whatever comes next week, keep breathing, stay calm and Keeping the faith!
🌞🌵 Good Morning Mary, once again you help the sun rise on Sunday mornings.
Thank you for all the songs that filled my soul with the heavens beauty.
Thank you. I have always loved that song.
Thanks for being such a steady light, Mary Chapin! I look forward to my every Sunday dose of you.
Angus is one lucky dog. He gets a private concert every week plus the practice sets!!!
Again thank you! ❤️
If it's Sunday, it must be Mary Chapin Carpenter! Wonderful song selection! Haven't heard this in so long. Beautiful performance!
Great song and a great choice! Doesn't seem that long ago though. You just get better and better. Thank you for the music!!!
We didn’t make it to church today but I did make it here, God blesses just the same. Ha! Thanks so much♥️
"...there's nothing like a good break-up song..." Perfect! Thank you again.
Such fine writing, singing, playing.
Thank You!!! Each little light seems symbolic of every flame!! Always such a wonderful few minutes to look forward to and such a favorite song! Be well always!
🌼 Thank you for sharing your music every week!!! 💙💙💙
One of my favorites! Once again you read my soul. Thank you MCC. Stay well, stay safe, and always stay mighty! Your Sunday videos are like a flame in the dark.
I know this sounds crazy, but I used to play MCC on the radio and I didn't realize just how beautiful her voice is. Absolutely stunning. And she's a great guitar player too. Thank you MCC. Rock on!
Thank you again Mary. Sending love, light and sunshine from Melbourne, Australia.
You're right---what a wonderful song for such a dreary January morning. Love the lights on the piano. Stay Mighty!
Thank you so much for staying mighty with us through these ridiculous times!
Hello from Cape Town, dear MCC.
Your photo has me utterly spellbound, as it seems to be drawing my gaze and thoughts outward and ahead, and seconds later it brings the focus right back 'in'...
So happy to see that you will spoil me/us with yet another song in a few hours' time, for which I am deeply grateful.
Wishing you, your family and your lovely furry children all the VERY best.
Much strength for the new week, and beyond. 💞
As always, dear MCC, thank you for your awesome music and deeply resonating storylines.
I love the festive string lights on the piano, your warm smile and your sense of humour.
Thank you for reaching out to all of us in your kind and caring way. -
I am absolutely THRILLED that Ms Baez will be suitably honoured and celebrated by the Kennedy Center! 👏👏👏
Hi Ursula, never to forget you. Sending my friendship, support, thoughts to you and to RSA! What can I say, things are rolling like everywhere and as they do, focus loaded on health of all and staying positive, feeling this feeling more essential around day by day. Our hearts get calmed by Ms Mary Chapin's songs. I pray that you stay fine, take smart care please. :-)
@Audrey Felső
Thank you for your kind thoughts, words and prayers, dear Audrey.
Yes, I feel much enriched by Ms Chapin's songsmithing. I cannot thank her enough for all the soulfood!
I wish you much strength for guiding your students during these uncertain times. Keep the faith!
And if your night sky should be clear, you might see Orion in the south: I have just dispatched a 'good-night-wish' in such a way that it should bounce off the middle of Orion's 'belt' to reach you where you are. 😍
@@ursulamulder110 Went out to watch the sky and the good night wish jumped into my heart:)Thank you and God bless
Dear Ursula, Happy New Year, Winter came with a vengeance this week. First 3”-4” of snow so drivers can show how bad they are on slick roads, it’s a yearly thing. Today more snow but tomorrow single digit high and minus windchills going into Monday. Think I’ll just stay inside and finish my stroll through SFH, and let Ms. Mary’s music take my thoughts where they will. Peace and Blessings for the new year to you.
Thank you, Mary!! Be safe & healthy!!❤️🙏
Oh, I love this song! That album was so important in my life! If you want to play another last century song, another sad song, I’d love to hear “End of My Pirate Days”! Thank you for brightening our Sunday’s!
I love your music from Japan 💕✌️
Gosh, Mary, those guitar lessons have really paid off! I so love to hear you play your beautiful instruments. Makes me wish I practiced more. It’s not dreary in my neck of the woods but you are definitely a twinkling light on this Sunday morning. Thank you so much!
Always a pleasure to hear you and to see you even though virtually. I hope you are well. I have always thought so highly of you and your music and still do. I love the lights! I have a tiny Christmas tree that stays out year round. Joy sparks joy. Take care. Until next time.
Funny, my wife is hanging lights around the mirror in our living room right now. Something to that for sure. Cool song! Thanks for sharing your talent each week!
Thank you
Thank you for this!! Your music has a healing ability for me!!
Thank you for helping me see more good - such a welcome and needed focus right now.
Thank you so much ... you reminded me of a song I wrote in my younger days ... reminds me that no matter what is happening, keep singing -- because there is always a song to tend the soul. God Bless you 💕
Thanks to all who keep a candle glow. Where would we be if there wasn't hope and love, even for those loves that are no longer flaming. Nothing like a break-up song :)
Beautiful shot, Mary. Fence lines fascinate me, and is that a pond over to the right? Thank you for sharing!
So lovely, as always. You make my heart smile! I wrote this winter poem three years ago today for a place in Montana called Charlo. I hope you enjoy it.
Charlo In Winter
Still and white
The winter light
Doth cast an icy glow.
The owls and foxes
Do delight!
They laud the frosty show!
The trees clad
In a hoary glaze
Stand silent in the brume.
Beneath the veil
Of silver rime
Spring awaits her turn to bloom.
Once again you brighten my day with your beautiful voice....Thank you Mary
She says it's been so long, she can't remember when
The mention of his name didn't make her feel again
That everything is possible and every day a brand new start
Yes, love's something powerful when it finds a willing heart
Sometimes it's a fire burning out of control
Sometimes it's a candle burning long and low
All these years she never let him go
There's a keeper for every flame
There is someone in his past that he hasn't gotten over yet
Each day's like the last, he just misses what he can't forget
It's just an empty space where something used to be
Now he guards the gate, but he's lost the key
So no one enters, but no one leaves
There's a keeper for every flame
I thought my heart had broken, but it was just a little bruised
I thought love had spoken, I guess I was just confused
Sometimes we were a fire burning out of control
Sometimes we were nothing but a candle glow
But it never died, baby, how I know
There's a keeper for every flame
Sang as youthfully and as spirited as when I first heard it on Stones in the Road for the very first time. Thanks, Chapin!
