Depends on how many cores you want. For all-out mhz speed the best is the dual core Phenom II N660 at 3.0Ghz. There is also the triple core N870 at 2.3Ghz or the quad core N970 at 2.2Ghz. Since this video I have upgraded to the N660 and it's pretty nice.
I just wanted to thank you for this video. I just inherited an E442 with a V160. I was just going to up the RAM on it (from 2gb) but after seeing your video, I picked up a P540 on ebay and will drop it in too.Should make it a decent little unit. Thanks for posting the video! :)
I also have a emachines E442-V133 laptop with the AMD V140 CPU. I just upgraded my RAM from the 2gb Kingston sticks to 8GB Crucial memory sticks ($46 shipped). The RAM worked perfect. I got the Crucial 8GB kit: CT5305051 (4GBx2) DDR3-1600 PC3-12800. I'm about to upgrade my CPU today to the AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N970 2.2 GHz CPU (EBAY used USA seller $67 shipped). Wish me luck!
so just to update... all went flawlessly thanks to this video and all the helpful comments below! CPU and RAM working perfect in the laptop! Thank you all!
@SurushBlade The ones on the sides don't move--get the top of the keyboard out first, then you should be able to get the keyboard out of those side tabs--or stick something flat by the edge of the keyboard and pry it out around the tab.
@guestandsons Should be fine. Sometimes they call them ultra, sometimes not. Sounds like the exact same one I used. As long as it's socket S1 (S1G4 to be exact) it should work.
@CogZ97 The standard RAM is DDR3-1333 (PC3-10600) so I'd stick with that to be sure it's compatible. I've actually already upgraded mine to 4GB, which I think is plenty for this system (2x2GB). I'm actually not even sure if it supports sticks over 2GB each
Assuming you can find a replacement and get your case apart, yes. Looks like you have the same chipset as me, and the assembly should be pretty similar.
@ZZZjoel43ZZ No, I don't notice it running any hotter. Both processors are the same wattage so that shouldn't be an issue. There is no video "card", it's a chip built in to the motherboard, so no it can't be changed.
@DreamPhire It is a noticeable difference, mostly in multi-tasking as you would expect when adding more cores. Boot times didn't seem to change much. Windows Experience index gives the processor a 5.9 rating now, but I can't remember what it was before.
@CogZ97 No--that's a Socket AM3 processor, meaning it's for desktops not laptops. You want to look for socket S1G4 processors with 25 watts. See this list: enDOTwikipediaDOTorg/wiki/List_of_AMD_mobile_microprocessors
4GB works really well. This increases speed well. The laptop can be upgraded to 8GB. Yes a dual/tripple/quad core over the V140/V160 single core is again a useful upgrade (like the Phenom II N970 quad core).
well the last processor was 93C , max was 115C and i played GTA IV . This processor has been 71C better settings ingame . So im glad it is running very well .
Yes it will. I asked emachines and 35W TDP is fine but not 45W. So I'm running the phenom N970 2.2 Quad Core now 35W. This is my second upgrade on my emachines E442. It was a V140 2.3 then a P560 2.5 Dual Core now the phenom N970. So slap int he tripple core!
Look at the Acer Aspire 5552-7803. That is the more expensive sister (acer) version of the emachines e442 (same motherboard). I don't know if the fan is different but that can run 35W TDP quad core processor.
You need to figure out what the socket and TDP of that processor are. I'm having a hard time finding it with quick searches. You could download a program such as hwinfo to check, then look for other processors with that same socket and TDP--doing this you shouldn't run any hotter than you currently do.
Brilliant I've done it.Scary tho and keyboard I found very hard to get out! But well worth doing. The speed is incredible on google earth & it runs cooler and the CPU guage is generally under 50% instead of over 50%! thanks again wouldn't of done it without this video.
@CogZ97 Again no--None of Intel's processors will work on an AMD platform--completely different designs. Any processor should tell you the socket, you want S1G4 and as I stated in the video the standard processor is 25 watts and I don't know if this machine supports anything higher than that. 35 watts *might* be ok, but I haven't tried.
I don't think most laptop video cards can be replaced at all. As far as I know they are permanently attached to the motherboard. And even if not, replacements are nearly impossible to find and very expensive.
Is it possible to have a portable usb device that either replaces or adds on to graphics cards, processors, or whatever? I have a gaming laptop, but only 1.73GHz. Even with a Nvidia Geforce GT 425M and 6gb RAM, I can only play the Witcher 2 on low and still get bad framerate and, more annoying, slow responsiveness (about 0.25 seconds).
@iirmantass3 Sorry I don't know. The place I bought it from only ships to USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. I've seen them on Ebay also, maybe check the Europe ebay pages
well you are wrong , it worked and its running wayy colder , last processor was sometime 93C this one has been max 71C . So yeah ... it works well and usually its is 52C-62C max .
I AM UPGRADING AMD V160 (single core) to a AMD PHENOM II X3 N850 2.2ghz . Evrything is the same socket , size etc . i wanna know if it will work since the V160 is 25W and the new is 35W ? Thanks
do u see much difference with the dual core 2.4ghz p540, because i have a v140 amd processor at 2.3ghz single core and i want to upgrade as multitasking on single cores are a pain. performance ways is there much difference with these 2?
I:m looking to upgrade my E442-V133 what is the best chip for the $.? with 1/2/3/4 cores out there ghz up to 3.4? athalon/phenom/turion? i.m looking to spend under 40$ for a used 64bit possessor.
if i upgrade my processor am i still gonna have all my programs on my computer that i had before, sorry for stupid question, computers are not really my thing
Hi! Thank u for making this vid! I've a Toshiba laptop with 1.7 Ghz processor and 2 GB in RAM. If I want to make it to a better "gaming computer", do I just basically have to upgrade those two components (the Proccesor and the graphic card)?
I downloaded CPU-Z and it says for socket " socket P (478) " what do i do now to upgrade to a better CPU? I was looking at i5 or i7. Would it work for me? Thanks for the video and help.
Thanks for doing such a useful video. I have a V140 in my emachines E442 I bought early on this year. Is this processor on ebay suitable? AMD Mobile Turion II Ultra Dual Core P540 2.4GHz 2M s1 Its an Ultra does this matter (different pins)? Many thanks again.
I was thinking of doing this exact upgrade... can you tell me how much of a performance gain you've experienced since the new cpu was added? Many thanks for the guide, Am looking forward to trying it!
Ok--everyone asking can I upgrade XX laptop here's what you need to do: 1) Download cpuz or hwinfo or some similar program. Run it, and get your current CPU's socket and TDP (watts) 2) Find a list of other CPUs that use the same socket and TDP Then you just need to figure out where to get the CPU (try ebay etc) and how to get to your CPU inside your laptop. Every model is different, so without having them in front of me I can't really tell you how yours works.
Thanks that helped and explained alot!!! I found something I think I am going to be buying. Is there anything ells I should keep in mind when upgrading to a higher processor? Like fans or anything ells to make sure nothing is getting to hot and running smoothly.
Those 3--processor, RAM, and graphics. However, most laptop graphics cannot be upgraded since they are soldered directly to the motherboard. Plus it's very difficult to find just a graphics chip for a laptop. Bottom line--if it wasn't built for gaming to begin with it will probably never be that great.
Well I should have qualified my answer better---at full load it will run hotter. Doing the same tasks with a faster processor will mean less load and could mean lower temps. A difference of 10W is likely negligible in many cases anyway. And I would question your monitoring software---at 93C your system would likely crash and you could permanently damage the processor.
I honestly don't know. The motherboard on mine died years ago so I no longer have it. You might try a Windows 10 compatibility checker and see what it says. I'm pretty sure Windows 11 is a no go.
I got a question, I have this same exact computer and it powers on, fans work, screen dose not work. I tried using a a spare monitor I had laying around and nothing came on the screen. (I tried using the screen with other computers and worked fine) Is this a mother board issue? or is this something else? Also, what mother board will work with this computer?
Depends on how many cores you want. For all-out mhz speed the best is the dual core Phenom II N660 at 3.0Ghz. There is also the triple core N870 at 2.3Ghz or the quad core N970 at 2.2Ghz. Since this video I have upgraded to the N660 and it's pretty nice.

Depends on whether your motherboard supports the higher wattage. One thing's for sure--if it does work it will run hotter.

Yes. AMD socket S1 G4 offer dual 3.0ghz or a tripple core 2.2ghz or a quad core 2.2ghz. All 35W TDP which is all good.
@guestandsons Should be fine. Sometimes they call them ultra, sometimes not. Sounds like the exact same one I used. As long as it's socket S1 (S1G4 to be exact) it should work.

I don't think so. Look up socket P on wikipedia. It shows other compatible processors, mostly core 2 duo. I don't think any of the i-series will work.

Alright thanks. How about when replacing a video card. Do i have to have a certain socket for that also?
@iirmantass3 Sorry I don't know. The place I bought it from only ships to USA, Canada and Puerto Rico. I've seen them on Ebay also, maybe check the Europe ebay pages
The specs of the processor are:AMD DT AM2 Athlon processor 2650e 1.6 GHz 15W FSB 800 MHz 512 KB L2 cache
@peachferrari Thank you for a quick reply. I've now bought the processor & will watch your video's few more times & give it ago.
I have a emachine em250 can I do this same swap? And What type of changes with I see after?
@peachferrari Now i can't find CPU's for laptops in europe. Is there any left or not?

Yes--won't affect any of your data.
where can you buy laptop upgrade things like processors? i'm not english so i may not spell right

what is the Highest Processor Speed i can upgrade my eMachines e442 to.
Sorry, but can I replace my CPU with this method on my E-machines E620 laptop without any cooling problems? It's a real pain(1,6gHz).
I think I should upgrade my ram seeing as that isn't its strong point is there any you could recommend ?
Can this be done to a netbook?
can i change the processor on a acer aspire 5740g???
@salonU12 Glad to be of help!

can i change out my fujitsu siemens v5535 processor?
and does it has mean?
do it makes my computer faster and smoother?
@guestandsons Cool, glad it worked out for you
@TopBearHD Read all the other comments--it's been discussed.

@johnwest19991 Yes--mostly to edit it before posting.
Works great--no problems at all.
If I upgrade my processor on my one will it let me run a newer Windows version than Windows 7?
I honestly don't know. The motherboard on mine died years ago so I no longer have it. You might try a Windows 10 compatibility checker and see what it says. I'm pretty sure Windows 11 is a no go.
Shouldn't have to. As long as the new processor is around the same TDP (wattage) then it won't run any hotter.
can i upgrade my AMD v140 Processor?
Can I upgrade to a AMD Phenom 2 dual-core mobile n660
Specs: 3.0 Ghz, 2mb cache TDP: 35watts Socket S1(S1g4)
Yes--I actually have that one in my machine now. Any Pxxx or Nxxx should work fine.
Hmm---what are you using to check the cores? Cpu-z or something else? Also what version of Windows and 32 or 64 bit?
I got a question, I have this same exact computer and it powers on, fans work, screen dose not work. I tried using a a spare monitor I had laying around and nothing came on the screen. (I tried using the screen with other computers and worked fine) Is this a mother board issue? or is this something else? Also, what mother board will work with this computer?
This is it's chipset model: AMD RS690MC/SB600 Chipset
This method probably won't work on that Acer. They may be the same company, but they use different hardware.
Yes--any AMD PXXX or NXXX should work just fine.
this is possible for emachines e725
?
man can i upgrade my lenovo g475 processor? thanks for reply :))
but this will make my computer faster right?
Thx a lot for your help. My fan was cover of a Huge hill of dust....
@4tehlulz35000vr Netbook? Dude an i5 would most likely melt a netbook because of the TDP.
Sorry--comments from suzadams are from me--I didn't notice my pc was logged into the wrong account.
for me the CPU is OK all i wont to do is upgrade the ram and get a bigger harddrive
Thanks
@TheTodoTipodecosas Sorry no--I don't have one
ok thx I'll keep searching :)
