Perfect form. I just smithed my first Scythe blade. Man they are challenging. Most people don't know that the scythe rides flat on the ground and only cuts a narrow strip of grass, and once you get in a rhythm you can basically shut your brain off and just daydream.
You are spot on. For a long time, I have been trying to cut a too broad strip of grass. Instead, one should do as if one simply wanted to push sideways what has been cut on the previous stroke, and it works almost like magic.
Thanks for this. I learned to do this very quickly from this demo - it makes all the difference to my stamina, and especially to how I feel the next day
very nice. I just started scything. I'm going to try this technique. I can't seem to get the motion down. but I'm determined to get the hang of it! Although by probably the middle of that section I'd have to resharpen my blade!! You make it look amazingly easy!
Nice, inspiring video. I think it's great that you have found an environmentally friendly way to cut down the weeds/grass. It also seems like a great way to exercise. I love hearing the birds in the background. Thanks for sharing.
It's wonderful that you are carrying on the tradition of your Great Grandfather. So many things our Great Grandparents did on a daily basis have become dying arts. I too try to keep some of those traditions alive. In doing so, I can pass those things along to others and honor those that have passed on.
Thank you for posting this, it's a true art-form, lost with all this technology. I might pick it up just for the exercise. I like doing natural motion exercises.
A year ago I saw this video for the first time. Last June (2017) I could practice it, and yes sir, it works fine. I'm not in a very good shape but I could show to my friends in south France, how this city boy can be a country hard worker!!! Thanks Christoff
I came down here into the comments expecting *"no m8 the fockin currekt wey to do this shite is to arch your back as far as you can"* then a reply that said *"no m8, the fockin correct wey to do this it to do **_the backwards arch_** "*

I need a long handled scythe to chop some weeds down on a steep bank by my creek that I can't get to...weed wackers and mowers are a no go on the bank...where would I get a good quality scythe?
You couldn't apply that technique on my hilly land ! I went back to using my scythe around the orchard after I grew fed up with engine trimmers, and really love it, but still have to use a bar mower for the larger plots. And... ThaiChi needs slow motions, when cutting grass you have to produce !
@akyramoto - don't know where you are from but there are teachers out there giving courses in how to adjust the scythe to your body, learn the technique and how to sharpen the blade during mowing and learn how to peen. i know of people in Austria (where i'm from and i teach myself), England, Australia, Czech Republic, Romania ...
@drasechrisu We are in the Czech Republic doing courses or with our website and info/videos if its any help ? I love watching people mowing, the only better thing is mowing yourself :)
@HowToHistory Havn't tried this yet, but have had a few people ask us this at courses we run in Czech republic... We had a czech cartoonist draw something along these lines which is funny Can't link here but search google for images "kosimesnadno pavel rak"
This is ideal situation here, he wouldn't have a chance on the mountains with narrow fields and with mountain grass, so hard like a wire and stones everywhere
Heh, you'd lose that bet. I'm over sixty years old and cut native grass on my five acres with an austrian style blade every week during our long hot summers. Not just this summer but for the past 25 years. I've found that people who gasp at bare feet and express skepticism at any and all parts of the process have either not actually spent any time with a good sharp scythe or tried it and quit when the blade got dull.
Claudio Venturelli I would say easier, not more efficient. Lawn mowers cost quite a bit of money, require gas to run, and can't mow grass that's grown too high. A scythe requires more manpower, but doesn't need any gas or parts replaced to run and is a lower initial cost. Not to mention they're significantly quieter than mowers and can get in corners and near fences that mowers can't.
AmmieDanceAndViolin and scythes are as fast if not faster than brush cutters, for example (even with a Blade instead of wire) They simply are more tiring and difficult to use If you cut the grass for feeding animals there is nothing better than a clean cut of a scythe The reason why we use Power tools even when not required is the fact we are getting more and more LAZY

I know what you are talking about. I cut plenty of grass growing up on a farm.

That is a VERY tall hobbit.
Nice Technique! Scythes are such a great tool. Greetings from germany and thanks for the video.
When the times are ready, the show must go on with No one left behind...step by step...
Beautiful! I want one! I love your body mechanics - nice and even bilateral.
awesome. I'm just learning to do this in Poland, and I got to say your doing this pretty quick, like a machine! lol
very nice. I just started scything.

Great video.
You live in a beautiful place.

My Great Grandfather used this in Ukraine in the early 20th century

What a beautiful and upright technique.
Beautiful! It's like dancing! Bellissimo!

He has a beautiful technique.
After going through gas powered trimmer each year.. I about taking this approach.. Nice form of scythe use.. good for whole body exercise..

Why is Matthew Mcconaughey cutting grass with a scythe?
omg 😂😂😂
wow I just realized you made this comment 2 years ago 😂
And yet he is still out there cutting grass with a scythe. The world may never know.
Oh pero que lugar tan tranquilo paz y libertad 😎😎
Work always looks like more fun when someone else is doing it.
I admire your form, its very graceful. Can I ask, how much can you mow in an hour?
The legend says that he is mowing until today.
I love this legend mate :-) Cheers
It's a great connotation to a biokinetically sound golf swing.
Mowing is usually done e-early in the morning, when grass is wet with dew. Good for any climate.
Hell yeah.
very good!
This video is so green )
i can almost smell the freshly cut grass
Woooww i like it
well done !
That's a huge lawn.
Good technique! I'd put some shoes on though! Lmao
This made me think of the movie The Karate Kid! ;)
nice technique
matthew mcconaughey mowing his yard with a scythe. interesting.
Cutting grass is murder!
Plants are living things!
Beautiful place. Where it is ?
I could do this for hours, so satisfying to soo that strip of grass just disappear.
Would there be any sense in having a left handed scythe and alternating from time to balance the movement?
looks like you're dancing x)

mi domando se le lame fossero 2 e contrapposte se si potessa tagliare con la stessa efficacia anche andando verso destra nel movimento di ritorno
Wow
Can you tell me where I can buy a sythe just like urs?
You couldn't apply that technique on my hilly land !

Folks. I highly recommend to wear shoes when you are a beginner. Let me know if you need certain infos. Permaculturally Christoff
What blade you use?
Peenin. Permaculturally & Namaste C.
Where did you get your pants? I want some
A sharp blade and good technique is surprisingly efficient. Still, this is a workout for your azz, no wonder the ancients were so buffed.

Tracey La you ask a guy from new zealand where you buy stuff in US?
+Tracey La Lee Valley sells a decent one. Comes with sharpener and pouch to wear on your belt
Where do think windrows came from my god people this is how my family done over 1000 acres
Sir you could get in trouble with Obama Care for not wearing steal soled boots.
Peenin. Namaste.
.... mhhh? and why does the grass grow back? :-)
Christoff Schneider what Blade are you using? Where are you from?
Your scything technique is perfect
Do you Hammer or grind the bevels on your scythe?
Of course, if you had a Terrafirminator, it would be afraid to grow. (Gnome and Juliette reference)
Rammstein!!!!
This is ideal situation here, he wouldn't have a chance on the mountains with narrow fields and with mountain grass, so hard like a wire and stones everywhere
I don't know what is tai chi, but I know much about scythe.
No one will be productive long time with such short snatch.
as ya notice, there's plenty of grass to wipe yer feet off
shagy and scoby doo
아.. 온다..
किधर मिलेगा
ma chi te lo fa' fare di tagliare l'erba a mano?
Lawn mower
There are no fat scythers.
Bug types have exoskeletons and cant expland
PillCosby There have probably been quite a few fat ex-scythers who quit after they sliced half their foot off.
1:34 gave me a headache
I'm going to laugh wen one of his toes go missing :)
so the grim reaper cuts grass ?
Husnain Anwaar harvests souls. scythes were used to harvest grain crops, hence the scythe imagery used in the grim reaper mythology.
fakiirification And probably because of how common scythe accidents would have been, especially with crazy shit like *doing it barefoot*.
HighFunctioning Sociopath k
I'll bet money that he won't be scything that way when he's sixty years old, or if he had forty acres of hay to cut.

... üben, Junge. Irgendwann kannst du es.
und warum vollführst du dabei so einen barfüssigen schwulentanz? mann oh mann!
you know, it's been more than 50 years since we invented more efficient ways to cut grass.
yeah, but it stinks
