You are the first tutorial video that actually demonstrates how to begin calligraphy. Thank you so much. Very helpful. Can't wait to start practicing. ❤
Am a retired teacher and decided to teach myself calligraphy as you do and ordered some books and pens and made a start it was okay-ish but your video breaking the letter down into strokes makes everything so much easier I’ve looked at other calligraphy videos but speaking as a professional teacher of 30 Years...yours is the best I’ve found for content, clarity ....just all round..
This is the best tutorial on this subject. I was confused and now I have a much better understanding going forward. Thank you very much for taking the time to teach us. Now it's time to practice my Caligraphy strokes. ;)
Thanks for the lesson on basic calligraphy! I taught the palmar method of cursive writing to my third graders for 35 years. We had basic strokes similar to the calligraphy. The only difference was the pressure for light and heavy strokes! Hope I can master calligraphy now! Thanks!
Hi, I have a terrible handwriting and I want to learn calligraphy, what would be your suggestion? Can I jump into calligraphy and it can help me to improve my handwriting and cursive writing? or should I practice to make my handwriting better before starting to learn calligraphy? Thanks so much for your reply :)
Easily the best calligraphy for beginners video on the internet. My calligraphy got 10x better in a matter of seconds after hearing the information she had to share. Love love love this!
As a beginner, I can say that this is the best breakdown of calligraphy I have seen so far after watching multiple videos the last few days. This was the first time hearing that cursive and calligraphy are different because calligraphy letters are composed of strokes. So excited to have that base knowledge when I'm practicing the basics! Thank you!
I like how she adds an extra element into writing. most tutorials focus on the lines and spacing. She adds a third element which is pressure. I really enjoyed watching this video as a better break down. Her detailed explanations of each letter is very impressive.
I completely agree with this above comment! I've never heard of some of the explanations you've given in this video before and I've watched a lot of calligraphy vids. Thanks so much Thehappyevercrafter for breaking it down so well!
... but I do not understand why it is sped up!!!! That is the most important part of this video! ... and... the camera could have been closer... I really love the way she makes her lettering... she is truly an artist...
As someone who learned to write cursive as a child, I think there are two aspects that separate cursive from calligraphy. 1) The continuation - you don't lift your pen when writing cursive, but you do with calligraphy. 2) The pressure - you keep the same pressure throughout when writing cursive, but you put more pressure on down strokes and ease it on up strokes in calligraphy.
I really like that you have explained why the basic strokes are important and how they connect together in different letters. The way you've described it all here is very easy to understand.
@@saujanyaroy4942 thankfully creators can earn a living to support the incentive to share this no cost solution for us advertisement watching UA-camrs ;)
I'm pushing 70 and never had any interest in calligraphy until I watched this video and several of Becca's other video's. Now I've got Tombow brush pens and Rhodia paper ordered, and I've signed up for one of her courses. I think she hypnotized me with those darned eyes. Her well organized and precise approach to teaching really piqued my interest. Nice job Becca, and thank you.
After seeing so many demonstration videos without revealing any basic rules of calligraphy, I stumbled upon this gem. It TRULY is Calligraphy 101. THIS is someone that actually knows how to teach. I’m actually trying to not only improve my cursive handwriting, but started getting accustomed to using a fountain pen and also have an interest in learning calligraphy. The more skills we can learn, the better our understanding of their differences and the better our proficiency can become. Thank you, Becca, for making this video and providing such a vital understanding of the basics of calligraphy. I’ll go and check out your course now.
First video i've seen that breaks down the strokes. Now i know what I've been doing wrong and why i could not get it right! Still struggling with pressure but i believe it would be much easier after knowing what i just learnt. Thank you!
I’m learning calligraphy since few months, but I like to back to basics. I would love to see this video a few months ago.... It’s best video for beginners I’ve ever seen 💕🌺
I don't want to sound like the grandpa yelling "get off my lawn," but this is why handwriting still matters. If people took a whole minute to write out a word, lifting their pen after each stroke, they would appreciate the words they write and then speak.
Wow! You have explained and demonstrated the differences in cursive and calligraphy. How could I have spent my 69 years not knowing this!!!! Brilliantly explained thank you so much!
I’m a kid and I’ve never done calligraphy only cursive and I really wanted to learn it and I am able to write words so easily and I learned under 10 minutes amazing video you earned a like and a subscriber
I LITERALLY HAVE CHILLS DOWN MY SPINE IM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED! Thanks for the INSANELY simple but oh so powerful advice Becca! PS. I am starting calligraphy/brush lettering for the EXACT same reason you started back in the day - rocking it out as an Archi in an Engineering firm - lacking serious creativity in my life ... Thanks for being an inspiration!
God I have difficulty trying to write being a retired builder with sausage stumps but this is very inspiring so thanks and I,ll definitely try and lots of love from the uk 👍
This tutorial was phenomenal!! Absolutely amazingly awesome & helpful!!! Ty!! 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 👍🏻👌🏻👏🏻💓❣️ I agree with all of the comments in that this has BY FAR been the BEST tutorial for beginners on calligraphy and how to create the proper, beautiful, and perfect calligraphy writing text! Love it!
My only complaint is that I wish you had done your calligraphy in real time so that we could write along with you. I hope that you re-do this video one day & show the calligraphy being done in real time so that we can practice along with you during the video. Aside from that I thought it was great. Thanks!
I think I am going to FINALLY learn calligraphy, since most of the videos I have seen have never broke it down this way. I am so excited to finally do this!
This is the best video I found about calligraphy... I owe you a huge thanks. but I would like to make a request. Can you make an in depth tutorial on how to do calligraphy with WATER COLOR BRUSHES not with brush pens.
You have explained this to me in a way that it FINALLY makes sense- i keep trying to copy whole letters without understanding that it is a series of basic strokes- which of course, has not worked- Thank you sooooo much!
I've been wanting to learn calligraphy for years. Penmanship aka Cursive/Calligraphy is becoming a dying art and I like things like that. I will mention because I think it might be an issue. I'm left-handed and am 40. So my handwriting is awful now. I used to be able to write in cursive fast and well in high school. Now it looks bad and my hand will even do normal hand writing at times. I'm a blue collar guy. Writing isn't a very needed skill at my job. But I do feel the urge to muse and pontificate as I near my midlife crisis. So I want to start documenting my thoughts. When myself or whoever looks at them in the future. I want them to think the document is from a 17th century author who somehow became immortal. I've even considered making parchment in the future. But one step at a time. So any advice, tips, tricks etc are welcome. Especially from a fellow South-Paw who knows calligraphy. Oh and most important what types of calligraphy are there? Some seem to look more feminine than others. As a large bearded man of Old Norse ancestors, I'd like to learn a font that looks the part. TIA.
That was an amazingly informative class! Tbh all the other videos ive seen is basically people who just made a video about how they do it out of muscle memory without really teaching the basics to people. Youve taught me more in those mere 7 minutes than what 20-30 other youtube and skillshare videos have taught me. Much love to you 🧡🧡🧡
You are a really good teacher and explain it really well. Thank you. I really want to learn and have beautiful writing. What's the difference with beginners pens? What you've shown me here about the strokes you use is really helpful. I will practise every day☺
I see a few letters made up of strokes that were not in your basic strokes. Namely, the c, e, the rounded part of the b, etc. I am enrolled in your January class so I hope it will become clearer then.
Thank you so much for this video! I was making the exact mistake and was frustrated why my letter didn't look smooth. This was the most helpful video for beginners like me!

This is so cool. When I was learning to write the Catholic nuns would cane my hands for messy writing, which made it harder to write neater, resulting in more caning. I have always had messy writing as an adult, and when I try to write neater the trauma would tighten up the muscles in my hands making the writing worse. I am training myself through calligraphy to enjoy writing as artistic expression with your helpful content. Thank you!
I love this video! I teach lettering in person and I start with this concept as well. Cursive is not calligraphy! I just taught a workshop for Bible journaling people who had been attempting lettering in their Bible and when I told them that it's not cursive, they screamed. haha!! I could almost see a light bulb over their heads. I love it!! Great video - your production on your videos rocks!

Yes, and it’s pretty sad that they have taken cursive out of the curriculum in Louisiana and puts the focus on just learning print. Takes the excitement out of handwriting. You have to teach your kids how to write a proper signature.

The breaking down of the alphabet by different colors to show the strokes is genius!!
... but I do not understand why it is sped up!!!!
That is the most important part of this video!
... and... the camera could have been closer...
I really love the way she makes her lettering...
she is truly an artist...
It is sped up because it is an introductory video telling about her classes - not a teaching video.😍
OHHH... that's tooo bad... it would
have been a great teaching video.
I couldn't get past her up-speaking long enough to find out.
It would be even better if each stroke had the same colour :)

Agreed. I saw the "q" descending stroke. My penmanship up to now has been horrible. I'm hoping after her drills my handwriting might improve.

r is the combination of stroke = upstroke +comma stroke + down stroke
And stroke for s is callled swatch
