Am a retired teacher and decided to teach myself calligraphy as you do and ordered some books and pens and made a start it was okay-ish but your video breaking the letter down into strokes makes everything so much easier I’ve looked at other calligraphy videos but speaking as a professional teacher of 30 Years...yours is the best I’ve found for content, clarity ....just all round..
I'm pushing 70 and never had any interest in calligraphy until I watched this video and several of Becca's other video's. Now I've got Tombow brush pens and Rhodia paper ordered, and I've signed up for one of her courses. I think she hypnotized me with those darned eyes. Her well organized and precise approach to teaching really piqued my interest. Nice job Becca, and thank you.
... but I do not understand why it is sped up!!!! That is the most important part of this video! ... and... the camera could have been closer... I really love the way she makes her lettering... she is truly an artist...
As a beginner, I can say that this is the best breakdown of calligraphy I have seen so far after watching multiple videos the last few days. This was the first time hearing that cursive and calligraphy are different because calligraphy letters are composed of strokes. So excited to have that base knowledge when I'm practicing the basics! Thank you!
I like how she adds an extra element into writing. most tutorials focus on the lines and spacing. She adds a third element which is pressure. I really enjoyed watching this video as a better break down. Her detailed explanations of each letter is very impressive.
I completely agree with this above comment! I've never heard of some of the explanations you've given in this video before and I've watched a lot of calligraphy vids. Thanks so much Thehappyevercrafter for breaking it down so well!
Easily the best calligraphy for beginners video on the internet. My calligraphy got 10x better in a matter of seconds after hearing the information she had to share. Love love love this!
As someone who learned to write cursive as a child, I think there are two aspects that separate cursive from calligraphy. 1) The continuation - you don't lift your pen when writing cursive, but you do with calligraphy. 2) The pressure - you keep the same pressure throughout when writing cursive, but you put more pressure on down strokes and ease it on up strokes in calligraphy.
After seeing so many demonstration videos without revealing any basic rules of calligraphy, I stumbled upon this gem. It TRULY is Calligraphy 101. THIS is someone that actually knows how to teach. I’m actually trying to not only improve my cursive handwriting, but started getting accustomed to using a fountain pen and also have an interest in learning calligraphy. The more skills we can learn, the better our understanding of their differences and the better our proficiency can become. Thank you, Becca, for making this video and providing such a vital understanding of the basics of calligraphy. I’ll go and check out your course now.
I really like that you have explained why the basic strokes are important and how they connect together in different letters. The way you've described it all here is very easy to understand.
Knowing how to do something and being able to teach others how to do it is two different things. You know how to teach it! This short video is the best how-to on calligraphy. Thank you for sharing.
You in one sentence, taught me why I have been doing it wrong for years. Why I couldn’t get it. In just a few minutes you taught me what made perfect sense. Thank you.

Wow! You have explained and demonstrated the differences in cursive and calligraphy. How could I have spent my 69 years not knowing this!!!! Brilliantly explained thank you so much!
You are the first tutorial video that actually demonstrates how to begin calligraphy. Thank you so much. Very helpful. Can't wait to start practicing. ❤
I’m a kid and I’ve never done calligraphy only cursive and I really wanted to learn it and I am able to write words so easily and I learned under 10 minutes amazing video you earned a like and a subscriber
You have explained this to me in a way that it FINALLY makes sense- i keep trying to copy whole letters without understanding that it is a series of basic strokes- which of course, has not worked- Thank you sooooo much!
WOW! You have opened up this entire art/skill/craft. You are a natural teacher and take that from someone with years of running technical craft education.
It’s funny for me to “hear back when I learned cursive.” I learned to write some time in the late 60s. I was at a summer camp as a tot and remember people with guitars and proud Mary rolling. Little t-shirt from the moon landing when I was three so I was the 70s, when I learnt. There was no “print option.” My mother’s “cursive” always looks like calligraphy, she didn’t lift the pen. One of the inspiration Steve Jobs had for the Apple computer was a calligraphy class he took in college. I remember that because it struck me as illogical. This is an all-round fantastic video, I can actually make sense of the “instruction” packet in this kit I found at a yard sale. The fountain pens were dried up unfortunately. The tip of the pen makes sense and I thought you had to keep a constant stroke but turn the tip for the thinner lines. Clears up a lot for me. Thank you so much. Now I just have to find the pens, my wife got me new ones. Always the women. I wished you would just start running the planet, make nice things, maybe people wouldn’t be hating on each other ALL the time. Fistfights turn into sewing circles with some fistfights after (we are humans after all) but less at least. 🙏
First video i've seen that breaks down the strokes. Now i know what I've been doing wrong and why i could not get it right! Still struggling with pressure but i believe it would be much easier after knowing what i just learnt. Thank you!
I must agree with some of the other comments here. My search was for information on the basic strokes of calligraphy and this site was the first. My father was a professional sign painter and his technique always fascinated me. At my young age I never knew he understood stroke pattern, that he actually took pressure off and lifted his brush to start every “part” of each letter. I appreciate the simple explanation of the basic strokes. I want more detail and will definitely practice this technique. I will follow her now. Thank you.
I’m learning calligraphy since few months, but I like to back to basics. I would love to see this video a few months ago.... It’s best video for beginners I’ve ever seen 💕🌺

This is so cool. When I was learning to write the Catholic nuns would cane my hands for messy writing, which made it harder to write neater, resulting in more caning. I have always had messy writing as an adult, and when I try to write neater the trauma would tighten up the muscles in my hands making the writing worse. I am training myself through calligraphy to enjoy writing as artistic expression with your helpful content. Thank you!
I think I am going to FINALLY learn calligraphy, since most of the videos I have seen have never broke it down this way. I am so excited to finally do this!
My only complaint is that I wish you had done your calligraphy in real time so that we could write along with you. I hope that you re-do this video one day & show the calligraphy being done in real time so that we can practice along with you during the video. Aside from that I thought it was great. Thanks!

Wow this is such an eyeopener. So many people are trying to 'teach' handlettering by saying you just have to push down on the down strokes and lift on the upperstrokes. I had kind of giving up practicing because I thought it was an artform that needed a lot of practice and I didn't enjoy it. But this seems actually doable although it needs practice aswell of course. Omg! Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video is amazing! I’ve always wanted to learn calligraphy but it was always hard for me to get the letters right. In other videos, people just say, “Oh just practice the cursive alphabet!” or, “Oh just make your downstrokes thick!” That doesn’t give me much information. Great video explaining the absolute basics of calligraphy. Nowadays they don't even teach cursive writing in schools - totally blows my mind! Anyway, you have helped me a lot.🥰

Thank you, thank you, thank you! This video has changed my life! It's like I've just had a smack across the face & being yelled at... duh 🙄.... It's opened my eyes! 👀 😊 Thank You!
I love this video! I teach lettering in person and I start with this concept as well. Cursive is not calligraphy! I just taught a workshop for Bible journaling people who had been attempting lettering in their Bible and when I told them that it's not cursive, they screamed. haha!! I could almost see a light bulb over their heads. I love it!! Great video - your production on your videos rocks!
I've just discovered your videos and watched a couple. They are really fantastic. My main interest has been Doing a copperplate style script. I've tried so many videos that claim to be how to's but all they are is somebody writing with no demo and no discussion. Thank you so much for your clear and helpful instructions!
I don't want to sound like the grandpa yelling "get off my lawn," but this is why handwriting still matters. If people took a whole minute to write out a word, lifting their pen after each stroke, they would appreciate the words they write and then speak.
I’ve been trying to learn calligraphy but have given up and picked up the pen so many times I’ve lost count. Your video really helped me understand where I’m going wrong, thank you!
Second time watch this now. Am on my second week, em actually second time of practicing basic stroke, it seemed to me that I was getting a hang out of this. I will keep on doing it and see what it will turn out for me. Thanks a lot for the instruction!

The breaking down of the alphabet by different colors to show the strokes is genius!!
... but I do not understand why it is sped up!!!!
That is the most important part of this video!
... and... the camera could have been closer...
I really love the way she makes her lettering...
she is truly an artist...
It is sped up because it is an introductory video telling about her classes - not a teaching video.😍
OHHH... that's tooo bad... it would
have been a great teaching video.
I couldn't get past her up-speaking long enough to find out.
It would be even better if each stroke had the same colour :)

Lauren Elliott me too! All this time I thought I was doing calligraphy, it's cursive tho!

Yes!
I like how she adds an extra element into writing. most tutorials focus on the lines and spacing. She adds a third element which is pressure. I really enjoyed watching this video as a better break down. Her detailed explanations of each letter is very impressive.

No sir , you are right! Writing matters!
This video made everything click, thank you for being so detailed and honest! So glad I was able to view this tutorial!!
Hey Becca! You are absolutely amazingg✨ however I was just wondering if you could pls post a video teaching how you formulate your letters...thanx❤
I'm 77 and this is how we were taught to write at school in the 50s. I didn't realise this was now calligraphy until right now.
I have been wanting to learn calligraphy but I do not have brush pens. Is there another solution ???
wow,, you just earned a new subscriber ... thanks
The best presentation of calligraphy I've seen. Great teacher.
