Oh gosh! I just finished my entire bathroom with Schluter and then Ardex 8&9 after watching your videos! LOL I completely agree with doing things the way you know best at the moment. I also wanted say thank you from the bottom of my heart for producing these videos. My father passed away two years ago and I depended on him for all of these types of things. When I bought my first home this past July, I struggled deeply with the daunting task of demoing and remodeling my bathroom. Your videos helped give me the confidence that I could do it without him, something I never thought possible. With many tears, trials and tribulations, I’m proud to say the bathroom is near completion and I’m confident that I could start another project. I hope to send a picture when it’s completely done. Keep doing what you’re doing and thank you. You inadvertently helped a stranger recover a little from the grief she was suffering ;)

I'm glad you're finally coming around with laticrete products.
I do use ardex for leveling floors, but love laticrete thinsets and grout. Hydroban cementicous I have not tried but willing to make my own tests. Thanks for your shows, I think you're a straight up guy and enjoy your videos. Keep it up and fk the products that don't live up to our standards. They either improve or go away.

Issac, I totally appreciate that you're doing the testing. The whole industry needs to get serious about waterproofing. It's sad that these companies sell products that don't perform the way they claim they do.

I came to your videos because I have been in the process of adding a bathroom with a large walk-in shower to my basement. Your videos have been (and continue to be) incredibly helpful in that endeavor, and I thank you for that. When my bathroom is done I will keep coming back so I can keep learning from you AND because of your extraordinarily kind and loving spirit. Just wanted to comment on your question about drilling through glass/porcelain tile. Ive been a glazer and installing custom euro glass showers for 8 yrs and wanted to show how we drill through this stuff. As for glass tiles we us 4 different bits, one is the spade bit like you mentioned I usually use them to start the hole is glass so my next bit wont walk on me. ( can also take a masonry bit and LIGHTLY tap and spin the bit to getting that starting point) Ill us that spade or masonry bit drill till i get a small hole going. Then I go to a round Diamond coated bit to finish the hole off. 3rd bit is CRL's Super bit with this bit it takes the longest but can be done. I recommend to use the Diamond bit works best. And ALWAYS cool bits off or you can crack the glass tile and burn up the bits. As for drilling through porcelain we use those CRL Super bits they have been the best bit we have found so far. Also keep these cool and you can us the hammer drill on them but we notice if you finish through the tile with these bits the head tends to break off, not all the time but quit often. we will usually finish the hole with our cheaper basic masonry bit. Last bit is a Prism bit, you can us this bit start to finish highly recommend having this bit in the tool box as well. But I will say the most important part is that the glass tiles have full coverage if not most the time the tiles will crack. Hope this all makes sense. Listed bits below Hope this helps some people out.

Welcome to the club. I’ve been using Laticrete products for 12 years now. I was a custom kid in 1994 and the comparison between the two, hands down Laticrete is the better product. I’ve never used Kerdi and I’m not a fan of red guard. Since discovering Laticrete, I’ve never had an issue with any of my showers(except one, that was my fault). I’ve been in the game for 28 years now and I appreciate your insight and the techniques you use. I’m always doing research and keeping up with the kids today. But Laticrete is the way to go.

I've been setting tile for 35 years and have used all three types of ditra on extremely big jobs. I am shocked at how well these products actually work. But you hit the nail on the head by stating that there only good if installed correctly and lots of times they are not been there and have seen it. Keep up your videos man there great and we can always learn from each other. Your right about reps they usually don't know there own ass from you know what.

I appreciate your openness and honesty. In my searches online comparing various things (one type of roofing vs. another, one type of framing vs. another, etc.) I find that typically anyone who promotes the “best” product also SELLS that product.
Even as you’ve discovered with a certain product that used to be “waterproof” and is now “water management,” it’s all marketing out there. Promises backed with no real world test results. It’s not until products start failing and guys like yourself start analyzing the failures in the field that “best practices” can really be evaluated.
    Thank you for your work.

Laticrete is our manufacturer of choice, best warranty in my opinion. They invented thinset and have had much time to refine the formulas. Also provide thinsets and setting materials for just about every application. Their reps are great and in the very few times I've had any issues mainly grout discoloration they have come through everytime. They even payed us to replace their plasma grout that had failed after one year.

Its pretty funny tile coach. I feel like we are having identical careers on different coasts. I even prefer Uponor aquapex and fittings as well. I've been doing the hybrid kerdi on a mud pan then 8+9 all over since about 2014. I was surprised by the pin hole issue with your 8+9 test. I truly was. Especially because I also feel like expecting a perfect flawless install on any system is a foolishly ridiculous requirement. As though every band and sheet and mortar will be set perfectly.
But I am surprised that that's enough for you. As you said before its a redundant method. You would have to have a pinhole leak decently at the point of a seam and then have that stuck through. Not impossible because as you say small dams and birdbaths happen for varieties of reasons as no installer is always perfect and I don't think a shower needs to be submerged for these issues to happen anyway. But the redundancy is enough for me as well as the efficiency of mortar set fabric immediately on a fresh pan then nearly immediate coat of waterproofer. I also can't argue the logic that if the issue was that likely to cause a failure we would see a lot more kerdi failures which we do not.
When doing tub surround showers my preference is hydroban, though I'll use any if them, and anti fracture tape. I've been looking for straight roll on shower pans for years but I just can't go there. I would use anti fracture on the entire pan then also on the changes but waiting for the pan to be fully dry is a deal breaker. And it doesn't take much moisture coming from below to break the bond of any painted on membrane. There is a very satisfying tightness to the elastomeric products when they dry but I would feel safer with the k>8+9 than even hydroban with everything taped up.

I'm in the middle of my bathroom & shower reno and I opted to use the Schluter system, Kerdi line drain etc. I've already spent $11K on this bathroom and I've already began tiling the shower walls so to hear how these systems fail is making me insane. One HUGE issue I've encountered is that No one in the Chattanooga TN area actually carries the Schluter materials, and the Laticrete products are super hard to find. I found 1 unmodified thinset at Home Depot it was the Custom's economical thinset. This is so frustrating

Thanks for this Issac. I’m going to look for your testing videos. My first inclination was, did Schluter or Ardex have any comments on testing membranes and adhesives on a plexiglas/glass surface? I suspect the manufacturers are only testing on more typical substrates: plywood, concrete, backer-board, drywall, etc.
Are there potential issues with curing on a non-porous surface like glass or plexiglass?

My money would be that they believe it works without the need for expensive mixes to set the bands. The more expensive the system the less they can sell it to contractors. An 8+9 kit is $80 from my suppliers as a discounted price. I would bet Kerdicoll would be $140 for the kit. May not seem like much but adding $100+ and more complexity to a system that more than doubles the cost of shower construction as it is while competing with a lot of others... I don't think they want it or the lack of confidence it would bring to their system as they try to explain why it would even need to exist.

First off, Thank you for making me ask questions. Second, What are your thoughts on if you use Hydroban or Ardex 8+9 AND you get a pin hole to the Kerdi... So under normal conditions the Kerdi is suppose to dry out in between uses, but if you have another waterproofer over it, do you think it will trap it in there and prevent it from drying out? causing moisture to build up and then cause fail? Thoughts?

    • @jeffmuehlfelder7468
      @jeffmuehlfelder7468 3 роки тому

I had the same question - makes no sense . With the old tried and true PVC liner - they were used without even a preslope - because TADA - pvc is actually fully waterproof - you want your waterproofing as the lowest failsafe layer - an uncoupling mat makes sense so that if something ever does move... it doesn't disturb or tear your waterproofing beneath it. I'm no tile expert... I did a new bathroom in my home 2 years ago - i did a curbless shower. I waterproofed everything with redguard using a fabric to make it even sturdier to any potential movement - then I put another coat or two of redguard on top to get it to the right total mil thickness. Then I used a custom products uncoupling mat and then tile. 2 years later it's rock solid, not even a hint of a crack in any of my grout - dry as a bone underneath (unfinished basement makes for easy inspection). I love anthing i can get at HD - these tile experts look down on HD stuff and only seem to want to use more expensive harder to find tile contractor brands.

Would be cool to see tests on some of these waterproofing boards and how stiff they are. You could set up a fake wall and with 16in spacing and 12in spacing and push in between the gaps to see how much they flex.
Maybe even install some tile on it and push on it after it dries to see how much it flexes.

@@TileCoach I’m confused. In this video it seems that the Swedish guy said that 8+9 wasn’t appropriate and it seems you talked a long time about no longer using 8+9... the title of this video says you’re not going to use it anymore, but yet you say here and in a few other replies that 8+9 is fine to use. I'm hoping you can respond to my request for the best products to use in the North Carolina region. I'm having to tell my first shower from the ground up. You're honestly about products is very refreshing in this day and age. So before war breaks out, I would like to get this older gentleman's shower done. We may have just a month or two at most before we're locked down. So if you can give me the best products to use from the studs out to a finish product, I know this may be a little lengthy but you can just list the material I would be so appreciative. Hydroban cementitious is usually used to waterproof swimming pools and fountains. But if you read the data sheet it also says bathrooms and floors. It says it can bond directly to pvc and abs, so I would assume it is fine to bond to PE sheet membrane.

We have a remodel going on, The company that set the tub/shower tile did such a poor job, they are redoing it. They are using Ardex 8+9 and applying it over the back wall tile and are going to set new tile over the tile they put on 2 weeks ago. They demoed the side walls and want to put regular drywall up and Ardex over it instead of using the purple drywall for tub/shower installation. Ugh. I feel like they are cutting so many corners. That is how they create their respective prescriptive installation guide and their respective warranty. Ask you present your videos you talk around the answer, but you need to drill down into molecule size and material bulk water collects upon AND the vapor barriers. Geat Testing and videos - Thanks

I've been using the Goboard system for quite awhile and am very happy with it. Coming from the air sealing/insulating/etc side of things, it makes the most sense to me also: the sealant it uses on the board seams & over screws/etc is a silyl-terminated polyether hybrid sealant, the same as OSI Quad Max/etc (Goboard even approved quad max and other similar sealants to be used with their system). silyl-terminated polyether hybrid sealants are the gold standard of waterproofing for exterior applications - sealing windows, doors, etc. it's the type of sealant used on the windows you see in those hurricane videos where the water is 1/2 way up the window and not a drop of water is leaking through.
And then Goboard had the additional benefit of being very lightweight, polyiso foam boards (polyiso is also completely waterproof by itself, but then Goboard puts an additional waterproof fiberglass layer over their board, which is quit a bit thicker & tougher than Kerdi/etc.
Only downside with Goboard is the lack of pre-made options, they have a few foam shower pans, but there's not many options. But for everything else, Goboard is my go to!
