SU not being the best in all of their history does not mean they are terrible now. That is an insane standard! They won it handily and MVSU sounded so much better than previously. SU with the W but salute to both of these programs.
Serious question. Do you think Haymer, Doc, Mr. j, Knighten or Brian would’ve been satisfied with “not being the best in all of their history?” If the answer is yes, then that’s the whole problem with this new SU. (Barely) getting by bands when you recruit the best talent in the states. JSU has already dominated them and soon every other band will. Competition has finally caught up. Your suppose to dominate the minute you earn an “S” on your chest. The “S” Should’ve never picked Taylor over Haymer and it’s obvious. Now, you may be satisfied with being “good”. But the legends who’ve built this program sure wouldn’t be.

I love this video angle. You can collectively hear the entire band together. MS Valley needs to work on the trumpets if they are trying to hit those high octaves on the first song. Their baritones sounded very nice. All together, I’d give them a 8.5. They are truly good. Southern’s mellophone section sounds beautiful. They are together when playing scales, they don’t miss the frequency or pitch. I love how the music Southern plays showcases the tuba, more than most bands I’ve listened to. Southern’s trumpets and coronets sound great too but, the trombone section needs to stay together when hitting the difficult scales. The second song played by Valley was the best among the pieces they played. Southern’s second piece was outstanding. I have to give it up to Southern’s tuba section. That second song was just so clean. Southern’s third song sounded brilliant, but the trumpets need to get it together like the tubas. On that third song it needs to be cleaner. Valley sounded nice on the third song, but the song choice was not that great. That is not their fault. I wasn’t feeling it, so the arrangement was stale. Pick songs that enhances the band’s talent, sound and Southern’s fourth piece was outstanding. But I have to make a comment about the percussion section. The bass drums were a little sloppy, so their technique, and/or the score’s rhythmic complexity was lacking. During the interludes when the tuba and percussion section were playing, you can clearly hear that the bass drum’s rhythm and/or tempo was off. As a matter of fact, other than the bass drums, the percussion section was drowned out entirely even when the band plays. Overall, there is no argument that Southern was better than Valley. Being a flautist, who plays every woodwind in the flute family, I’m partial to woodwinds. That aside, I love the rich sound of brass instrument❤. Both have their different talent, being that the size of Valley’s brass section is not equal to Southern’s brass. The place for woodwind instruments with Valley, eliminates the number of brass instruments that Southern has. I searched for a Southern University orchestra, so I could hear all the pieces of the band, and couldn’t find an orchestra programs, but Valley State has a Symphonic Band and Concert Band. If I’m wrong, please let me know. I would love to hear these students play not only in a marching band, also in a concert, symphonic and concert band. ❤❤. Congratulations MVSU and Southern for the great sound, and entertainment this season.
Im reading these comments. Southern Band sound quality has fallen. I hope the band directors get a shot of Cognac next year! Big Ups to both bands. Our future entrepreneurs!

SU won just sounds like a really young group. Always remember that constant pitch center is the name of the game. Constant pitch center no matter how hard to press the gas! Euphoniums did an okay job just for outside of pitch center at times. Fun battle just sounds like a potential having young group(SU) vs a group that needs more time(The spring) to play together(MVSU). The jukebox was moving a lot of sonic energy though we just need more maturity in sonority and articulation and that’ll come with playing together and building the chops more. Can’t wait to hear them next year or the year after. Just sounds like BLAAAAHHHHH at times!!! Just my opinion. JSU does a wonderful job at it. They’ve toned down slightly and use a lot more resonance and that makes them sound a lot stronger than they EVER have. Constant Pitch Center has to be practiced and goes beyond just blowing!

@@ikenga02 Clearly your memory is cloudy... You have the wrong person... In addition to you simply having no idea what you are talking about.
@@ikenga02 O now, you edited your comment changing to I'm "the same type of person" from "you are the same person"... Mind you, I never mentioned Haymer, you did... Haymer has nothing to do with my comment...
My point is further proven, that you do not know what you are talking about at all... It is clear you made a comment for attention, which was absolutely stupid of you to do, and even more stupid to edit your comment from your original lie, only to further to stupidity lie... Now, go sit in a corner, facing and face a wall...🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@ikenga02Reporting my comment is not going to erase the fact that you edited your comment in an attempt to cover your lie, only to tell another lie🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@ikenga02Show me where I mentioned Haymer... You can't, because you simply told a LIE... Go sit in a corner...🤣🤣🤣🤣
Man i don't know what that rockhead dude was talking bout, MV sounded empty af. They have a decent lil trumpet section but overall all their songs sounded empty. SU played and it's like magic happened. No flaws at all for SU, they was just too strong and on point! The best I've heard them ever! I had to say goddamm after every song SU played. If you don't have a good ear for instruments and music, stfu with your ignorant opinions. SU slapped the tihs out them boys 😂😬
Eh SU has sounded better before
BOFFUM 🚮 🚮🚮🚮🚮
Amos ain slick either we see you my boy 🤣
Southern has zero competition these days.
What are these dudes snorting and shooting up their arms? Valley sounds better, but they acting like they brought some heat to the Jukebox. Stay off 'dem drugs.
Mvsu had to many mistakes and sounded a mess at times. I don't how people think they won. Get yo ears checked. SU ran them boyz..
This battle wasn't it. 😂 Idk what's going on with either program but I hope it gets fixed.
Did y'all just learn B&B....sounds like it....

Man idk what that was from both bands but hell naw.
anybody realize southern drum major always been lightskin or is it just me ?
There have been an array of darker toned SU drum majors... Their previous drum major for 2021-22 seasons, is definitely a chocolate tone
And that’s the problem, they always wanna sound like Southern. There is only one SU.
20:24
Wow, that tune at 13:00 was terrible, just saying
Nooooo trumpets
This shit is hurting my ears. High school. Both bands need to go practice
Valley won
Yall really some meat riders and in denial if you think SU this 😂 southern ain’t been the same since ‘17
😂 you valley lost bro , stop the hate on Su
Dawg just the simple fact valley holding their weight against the “S” is a disgrace. People living off the name, not what they’re hearing. Any former juke knows ever since B and Haymer left Taylor has ran it into the ground.
@@cj9160bro never touched a horn in his life😂 talking bout valley held their own dudes was trash

Mississippi Valley with the high school arrangements
Valley and dega sound just alike hand down SU music just unprecedented song selection on point
Hell nah valley sounds like the VERY OLD VERSION of dega. Not the 2024 dega. Those are two DIFFERENT degas. Dega today is not what valley sounds like ..in fact the dega today sounds better than valley
Bonds need a real writer this not high school. You gets no love playing other ppl tunes even if you wrote it differently
Sad that Dega lost 200 bandsmen. Glad that Valley increased their numbers about roughly 200 bandsmen. Get that education and take advantage of scholarship opportunities 🙌
This is a valley & su video. Dega is not affiliated so don’t mention them
@@gofish4392 How you gone tell somebody what to say with they opinion on a public comment section 😭
@@Reaching_Nirvana easy I just did
@@Reaching_Nirvana cause I just did sos don’t mention them on no dega videos tf!! They are not affiliated
@@gofish4392 Don't matter
I don’t like that trumpet part on “Black and Blues” arrangement…. It’s way too ignorant
