Dude thank you. After a few outrageous quotes i decided to give it a try. I build furniture cannot work on a car. 15 min both lights the metal clasp was my biggest obstacle. Listen the only reason im commenting is i flat out could not afford a mechanic to do it nor could i afford a ticket. You saved a stranger and im sure im not the only one. You sir Rock !
Glad to help! I remember the first time I did this too, that darn clasp got the best of me. But now, after like 6 times of doing it, I can tackle that clasp in a minute lol Anyways, glad I could help!

This video was so helpful. I'm a 60 yr old woman and was able to replace the bulb myself. These bulbs go out quite often and have been paying $99 every time I took it to the dealership. I only paid $23 for the bulb and it took me roughly 45 min start to finish to replace the bulb myself. I was able to replace it from under the hood instead of going through the wheel well. Thank you for your helpful video!😁
Great video! Love how you explain the smallest details. I am 62 1/2, and I try and maintain my vehicle as much as I can on my own. Very simple directions, thank you!
Update: I was able to replace my headlight the second time around much more easily thanks to your video. No loosening that screw this time. Seeing how that gate worked was key. It took a LOT of pressure to unclip that thing on mine ... using a glove made it less painful. To clarify even more for those first-timers: you need to push in (toward the front of the car) very firmly and then down to unlatch it. And the lower half of the clip is the only one that latches ... no need to worry about pushing anything on the upper part of the clip. Also, I'd replace both bulbs at the same time. I only replaced one and then the other one went out shortly after that and then my new one blew again. So I ended up replacing my driver side twice in about a month. I never worried much about keeping headlights as a "matched set" but I think I'll try to do that from now on.
That’s what I did…but because it’s old the damn housing broke. Couple of zip ties and I rigged it, but gonna have to replace the entire light at some point.
You definitely saved me, guy said he would charge me 150 to do it, I brought it and found you video and wallllaaaa! Thank you do damn much, you helped another stranger out on this side big time
For those who went to LED like I did for my mom’s car to avoid changing you can remove the circle clip around the low beam and put it in and shut the door clip and put the light back in the circle clip and lock it back. Lot of research time in this trick.
Hi, whats type/model of LED for low beam you went with? H7 or 9005? appreciate the exact purchase link if any. Spent about 3 hours and couldnt find one LED that fits to replace my halogen.. many thanks
Instructions for metal clip - hardest part. Take the mudguard off partially - my cx7 had little metal push pins you can lever with Flathead screwdriver. Reach in, unplug cable by pulling straight back, remove rubber dust cover. On bottom left part of clip, push hard towards front of car and down. It will unclip. Replace bulb. To put clip back on, stand over engine bay. Squeeze hand past fuse box on LHS (take lid off), grab clip and firmly push in and slightly down on bottom bit. The key is the bit at the bottom - opposite where it hinges. This is where the catch is.
I picked one up cheap after my financed 2017 TLX gotten written off…I was enjoying it till I started replacing lights 😂 my one rear side marker socket will not fucking come out no matter how hard I pull. Can hear it unlock and everything as well
Most helpful video I've seen on this so far. Thanks. I just did the one on my wife's CX-7. If you have a good jack and an impact wrench and you can take the tire/wheel off easily, do that as well. I'd say it gives you 40% more elbow room.
Thanks Chad. Without this video I would have never been able to replace that bulb. You would think the Mazda engineers would be able to make this much easier.
Great video! I’ve been a happy CX-7 owner for many years...except when the headlight(s) burn out. Then I get angry. I know how to do it now but it’s infuriating how difficult they made it.
Thanks for the sub! I hope you got it all fixed! I hated replacing those lights, but you get pretty good at it when I had to do it a few times a winter. lol
OMG thank you so much I can't believe I watched so many videos just to get to yours!!! Do you have the best content thank you so much keep up the good work my friend greatly appreciated
Big thanks for the video!! That clip is insane to reattach. My fingers were NUMB when I finished. My drivers low beam goes out about every 4 months so next time I'm switching to LED and we'll see if they last longer.
It took me 5 minutes to pull out the passenger side bulb thanks to this video. I had to use my thumb to put enough pressure on the gate for it to release but it came out relatively easily. Drivers side is a tighter fit but I think I can squeeze my hand in there without going through the wheel well. Great video and camera angles, yours is about the best on YT.
Thanks for this video! My only critique is that maybe you should make sure the bulb is working before you replace the fender well. I had a bad bulb and had to do it again. Your video has a good visual quality, you're easy to understand, and you have a good demeanor. Thanks again
Nice video. I couldn't get that stupid hinge to release when I did mine and ended up loosening the little Phillips screw that actually holds the gate in place (on the other side of the clip than you released in the vid). I wanted to make sure that I didn't break it as others have mentioned and luckily, that worked. The whole clip just comes off that way. However, it's a beast to get back into place again, given the limited area to work with your hands while still trying to see it. Just a really lousy design.
I did the exact same thing the first time I did my headlight change. Easy to get that screw out, but a pain to get it back in with the hinge. Very stupid design but glad you got yours done too! Thank you for watching!
It is such a pain. I have done it so much on this CX-7, that I can change the bulb out in 3 minutes flat LOL. I don't know if that is a good or a bad thing.
Great video and very easy to follow. Got me out of a bind and saved me a heap of $$$ that Mazda were going to charge me. Thank you so much - very much appreciate that you shared this online.
Thank you for this video. Could Mazda (and other carmakers) make it so much easier to change this bulb? Of course, but then there's no chance anyone pays them a premium to do it. Absolutely ridiculous what's involved in a simple lightbulb change. But I did it thanks to this walkthrough. And like most others, the metal clasp was the most painful part.
This video help me. Was very hard to get the old bulb out. And with the new one I couldnt get the clip on. Was wondering if the old bulb had some kind of glue on it? Had to just put it back with the rubber housing on and not the clip. Hopefully it holds!
No glue is used. That clip is a giant pain. You could probably get away with just holding it with the rubber for a while, but may cause a premature life on the bulb. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this video! That metal clip was a b*tch. Gloves were suggested below, which I would try next time. My tender ladylike fingers were aching, trying to push the clip back into place. I ended up using a butter knife to push it. 😆
Love this video, it is very well done. Wanted to ask though, those Phillips bulbs are H7 which is correct but they are Hologen, not Xenon Fusion (HID) like the originals. Did they still work without any issues and how long did they last you? Thx
I want to add that if you did touch the new bulb with your skin, you want to remove the aforementioned oils with some alcohol and a tissue. Alcohol dissolves oils, so just before installation, do clean the bulb with alcohol. I did so twice and my bulbs are in a good shape :) ye, the most pain is that wire that locks the bulb in its place. Annoying to operate. After you get it, however, it's a lot easier. Mazda's manual describes the mechanism but extremely poorly. It's like they actually want drivers to pay ridiculous money in the dealerships to do the trick. Anyhow. Thanks, great vid.
curious, since you shot the video from the topside/hood, could you just access the bulb from there? I've changed my passenger side on a Mazda 5 and 626 before that from the topside with no issue. Is there enough clearance to access from the hood side?
thank you, please advise if you can clean the lamp from inside, it is getting foggy with time and I believe that the front lamps are sealed, any ideas? thanks a lot!
So glad we’re getting rid of this car today. It’s been a good dependable car but I’ve probably put at least 15 headlight bulbs in it . I’m SO done with that !
Great video just a question for you or anyone else I just changed my headlight bulbs now a month later the headlights are very dim is there a reason why this would be happening
There are other videos that show that clip action better. In words, press the rounded loop part of the clip down towards the light housing, towards the front of the car. Once this is done the clip clears the hook into which the clip hooks. So while continuing to press on this clip push the clip towards the ring of the light housing. The clip and light etc is in a ring of plastic. So while pushing the clip down as explained earlier push it toward the inner circumference of the ring in which it all resides. Then the clip will be free of the hook and should then swing free of the housing as on a hinge and allow the bulb to be removed. After putting in new bulb properly swing clip back in place, press in (towards front of car) and this time then press towards inside of circle. The clip should find the little latch hook and it should stay in place. All this would easily be done if you could see it all better for sure. Don’t use a tool to help you do this. You could easily break the plastic clip housing.
I’m in Australia and have a 2010 CX7 that also only ever blows the left side headlamp, no idea why and only ever changed the right side to match the new bulb. Good video and informative, I always wondered about the orientation of the base and the bulb, good to know I’ve been doing it the right way.
Same problems as most getting the clip back on. I ended up notching the end of a flat screwdriver and then bent it 45 degrees and two seconds later the clip was on.
This was a PAIN IN THE TUSHY! I was a bit irritated before I started. Your video helped with the irritation. The rest is gonna take cream. Darn there hides for designing such system.
What they designed this so you have to take it to a garage.. omg.. i did do this 1st time just got this vehicle . It is a real pain. Then i find out the assembly on one of my lights where it clips to is broken. I just slid the sleeve on and stuck it in. Hopefully good enough.
Good video but next time I have to change those bulbs I won't need an instructional video, just a sledge hammer... to release all the stress, you know?! Stupid design from hell Mazda !!!
Thanx for the information. I got it done but it wasn't easy. What a horrible design. I think they make it complicated on purpose so you give up and take it to a dealer.
Absolutely the worst design, had to do this twice (per side) in like 4 years band is a real nightmare especially the first time you do it. I feel a rubber glove is a must to avoid a dirty scraped up hand.

How to replace the controller and ballast for the headlight on 2010 mazda cx 7?
What type of bulb does the Mazda use ?
Chad, everything seemed pretty tight in there..Unless you drive on constantly bumpy roads, I would think I will be alright. What do you think?
Is this just for low beams? What bulb for high beams?
I am pretty sure the low beams and high beams is one bulb, but I can't validate as we don't own the vehicle anymore :(
I earned 50 bucks cuz of this video
My drivers side has gone out several times also, any idea whats going on there?
I never figured it out :( only thing that ever helped was installing HID headlights. I ran them for like 2 years, never burned a bulb with them.

Question, we replaced the lights a few years back and then discovered that they are angled outwards. How did this happen and how do I fix it?
You might now have put them in their slots. They have little prongs that go into slots. Double check that is the first thing I would do.
