“Noren” is a Japanese word which refers to traditional fabric dividers that are hung between rooms, on walls, in doorways, or in windows. They usually have one or more vertical slits cut from the bottom to nearly the top of the fabric, allowing for easier passage or viewing.
Yumi Ishikita, a skilled artisan from Hiroshima, specializes in creating traditional Japanese Norens, using hemp for its natural durability. Ishikita is a master of the Katazome dyeing technique, where intricate designs are made using hand-cut stencils and rice paste. These hemp Norens, handmade by Yumi, not only serve their practical purpose as fabric dividers but also stand as elegant examples of Japanese artistry and tradition.
