  • Quick demonstration how to poly chain a Tetra to the Mopho x 4. Only a bit of playing on here, mostly just instruction and discussion on how the poly chaining is set up.
    And the end result? 8 wonderful analog voices of Prophet-like, synthesized goodness.
    If you really don't care about HOW to poly chain the Tetra to the Mopho x4, but just want to hear it, skip to 05:24.
    UPDATE: After much troubleshooting with the Dave Smith support guys via email, looks like I'll be dropping the Mopho x4 at the authorized repair shop to fix that "line noise" problem mentioned in the video. This is my second issue with the Dave Smith support folks, and I have to say they are SUPER responsive. First issue wasn't really a problem so much...but they still responded promptly and professionally.

    Hey! Helpful video - I also would mention that both the Tetra & Mopho X4 (or whatever module you are chaining) is the same midi channel whilst poly chained. In the midst of all the callamity and midi cables in my studio I seemed to overlook this upon my initial setup. Got it up and running, and I am loving it. Deep vibes tonight :D

      Yeah, when I did this video there weren't a lot of polyphonic analog choices out there, and this made a lot more sense as an option back then. Now, even a used Tetra and Mopho x4 would cost only slightly less than a new 8-voice Prophet Rev 2. These are good times for synth geeks!

    Man, I'm seriously considering snagging a Tetra for my X4 and your video has totally helped sell me. I love my X4 and there are things that does well and there are things that it doesn't. Those analog string/brass/pads are just next level with these guys but you are hard pressed to get a good "synth keys" sound out of it; it's possible but not it's most practical application. I feel you on not being able to use all of the parameters of each synth but if you're using the multi-timbral aspects of the Tetra and perhaps the sequencing of the X4 then you could plan that out ahead of time with a DAW or other sequencer - I know I'm not the type of guy to use that stuff on a regular basis, I mainly want bangarang, pop out of any mix chords.
    So I'll have to tack a Tetra on to the wish list and then eventually build a passive mix box to pipe a mixed version of all analog goodness straight into the DAW.

      Well, you already have the X4, the more expensive of the two, so yeah, the Tetra would be a natural next choice, as they really do work great together. Fortunately Tetras are fairly cheap nowadays too. Cheers...

      definately can get those sounds, its just a bit of a dive. I am going to mess around with different setups - as mentioned in the video - figuring out how to split voices between tetra and mopho x4 seems to be either elluding me, or is not possible. I would be able to program multiple other sounds via my Elektron Octatrack, with the assumption I have each of the 2 voices from the tetra on discreet midi channels. In theory, I think the other 2 voices could potentially chain with the mopho . i just dont know about midi in/out availability with the Tetra post polychain.
      I just got my Tetra hooked up tonight, been noodling with 8 voices with some fx chains in ableton, and I am impressed to say the very least as I have only begun to scratch the surface with this addition to my subtraction (see what i did there)

    Nice video!
    Simple question: when both are paired and share the same bank and I change a patch on x4....does the tetra follow with the patch change?

    Midipal/mid gal/midi bro (they’re virtually the same) can enable poly chain with 2 synths that aren’t polychainable. I’m sure you can use a merge box to get a 6 and 2 going with something else sequencing the other 2 voices

      Good suggestion. I wanted to pick up a Midipal or some kind of logical midi processor for a while now, but I never have.

    Thanks for the assistance. However, in retrospect, I think I should have just bought a Rev2, since getting a mixer, Tetra and X4 came out to be about the same price-though in “installments”.

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  4 роки тому

      Yeah, fully agree. If you're mostly building this setup for the 8 voices of polyphony, you might as well get a used Prophet 8 or a used Rev 2. I saw some guy interviewed where he had this setup mostly for programming his Tetra with his x4, using them both in his home studio , and then actually using just the Tetra for gigging with some other lighter controller he also used for pianos and organs.

    really nice that u made a video on this subject, i'm really thinkin' of getting morpho 4 or prophet 6 to control my tetras, but seems like with so many new synths coming nowadays it will be very difficult to uphold that dream, but anyway real curious to know how smoothly it works, u just share the same preset on both units and tweak fully on the morpho and it affects both right? any glitches? if u get time it would be super if u cud do another more in depth video just on how u tweak patches.

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  8 років тому

      +Ehsan Kamran Thanks for the feedback. The good news is the Mopho x4 really does let you easily program your Tetra. There is some menu-diving required, but for the most part, it's quite easy. And no, no glitches that I've encountered. The bad news is the Prophet 6 can't be used to program the Tetra. They have a different architecture and sound engine.

  • @fuzzupuzzu
    @fuzzupuzzu 8 років тому

    The only limitation i am seeing with is setup is that the morpho x 4 doesn't seem to have knobs for editing the step sequencer, I guess a prophet 6 would be a better choice, as per the all voices or none thing, I don't think its a serious issue but I do feel that it would have been nice to have it as u explained how you wanted to use it, although the good thing is u can connect the tetra via usb to another keyborard and just use it by itself for the layered sounds and other combo modes and what not and it can still be connected to the morpho by midi when u wanna fire up a 8 voice royal horns patch!

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  8 років тому +2

      +Ehsan Kamran The 2 biggest advantages I can see chaining the Tetra to the Mopho x4 is: 1) you double your polyphony, and have 8 voices which are great for slow fading pads or any patch with a slow release, and 2) It lets you program the Tetra with knobs! I can see times where I would rather just control the Tetra with the Mopho x4, letting them both have 4 voices (and different patches if needed), and then maybe layering them. You could get a big, fat sounding, 4-voice pad that way (with the 2 synths layered instead of chained). Hope that helps. Cheers!

    Awesome. Thx for the vid. I've got a yellow mopho keyboard and tetra and was thinking about upgrading the mopho to SE or maybe even X4 since because you can put the tetra on top, it basically takes up same amount of space as mopho keyboard and tetra but gives extra keys, and also tetra on top of other black units would just give a more unified experience, but........ the damn filter and resonance knobs are badly placed relative to tetra on top. Not enough room to tweak. Is it as annoying as it looks to me to be?

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  7 років тому

      Nah...it's not that cramped, at least not in any way that I noticed while playing with it. That being said, I'm not a massive knob tweaker while I'm playing (as I mentioned in the other Mopho x4 vid, I don't sequence much outside of a DAW). And as my left hand is used to doing the pitch or mod wheel, it really isn't hindered if I swing it over to work the filter knobs. If you're someone who just lets the on-board sequencer run, and you basically play the knobs with both hands, THEN the Tetra might be a slight obstruction, but nothing that's a show-stopper in my book.

    Hi man,
    I am from little Belgium
    Nice demonstration , very nice... Thanks!!!
    I would like to keep the patches and sounds of the Mopho x4 and those froth tetra in the same instrument ? in your setup it seems that an entire bank of the Mopho disappears and is replaced by the sounds of the tetra to reach 8 voices polyphony? Can we transfer an entire bank from the Tetra to an "user bank" of the Mopho and have access once to 8 voices of polyphony, or once to the two x 4 layered sounds or patches . Possible to choose the destination of the transfer ?
    Also I have a Mopho x4 and two Tetra's : 12 voices possible isn't it ?
    Thank's
    Philippe

      Hoi! België is klein maar leuk. Ik heb daar gewoond. And if you're Walloon, je regrette, mais mon français sucks. I did learn a little French in Belgium, but not enough. Fortunately I already knew some Nederlands/Vlaams.
      If I understand what you're asking, I think the answer is no. When playing in 8-voice configuration, the only data shared between the two devices is the midi performance data (note, CC, velocity, etc). The Mopho x4 can't read the patch data from the Tetra or vice versa. The only reason to have the same patch data in both devices (the Mopho and Tetra) is so when ANY of the 8 notes is triggered it will have the same sound. Though I haven't tested it, I think you can have different patches on the 2 devices (like a brass sound on one and a clav sound on the other ), and the extra midi notes from the Mopho x4 will still trigger the Tetra regardless of what the patch is (whether the patch sounds are similar or not). For a 4-note chord, 2 notes might have a brass sound, and 2 notes might have a clav sound, depending on how they are allotted for that one chord.
      Lastly if you don't want to copy over a whole bank of patches, you can copy just a single patch from one device to the other. That way you don't replace the WHOLE bank, but just the sounds that you WANT to have 8 voices for.
      Does that make sense? Hope so.
      And yes, 12 voices are possible with an X4 and 2 Tetras. I have thought about getting an extra Tetra just for that reason! Cheers...

    Hey man, i cant decide between the Mopho X4 and teh minilogue which one would you recommend ?

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  8 років тому +1

      Depends on what you ultimately want to do and what your budget is. If you're a player (you play keyboards), then the full-sized keys on the X4 is definitely preferable (to me anyway), though some folks don't seem to mind the Korg mini-keys. If you're wanting to step sequence stuff, the Minilogue appears to be a LOT easier to program sequences, and it's half the price. Sound-wise, they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
      So, were I a heavy step sequencer user who didn't mind the smaller keys, I would go with the Minilogue. In my case, I prefer the full-size keys, and don't step-sequence so much, so the X4 is preferable.
      Hope that helps...cheers!

    • @MinimalWave1982
      @MinimalWave1982 8 років тому

      Yeah it does, i am more into sequences and i dont mind the small keys. I just was concerned about the sound. The mopho x4 seemed to sound more the way i like it but then agaibn it cost a third more and teh sequencer on it is useless for me. I also own a Korg Kr-55 and i think i can sync it to the minilogue but i am not 100% sure maybe u can tell ?! Whatever thanks a lot you doin great work like your vids a lot. Keep up!

    I think DSI stuffed up here, the Tetra is great not only for the multitimbral COmbis etc but also for laying more than 1 voice of the same sound for a unison or really fat `Monosynth` sound. SHould have made the X4 a Tetra keyboard

      Fast forward to 2018 and I just got an X4 to chain to my Tetra and it`s great for proper strings/pads etc and means that my Tetra is no longer more or less a Rompler although for people without either machine to buy both today at once is pointless when you can buy a Prophet Rev 2 8 voice new for similar money to these 2 units 2nd hand.

    • @cubdukat
      @cubdukat 5 років тому

      I always wondered why DSI never did that. Mopho x4 was basically a Tetra with a keyboard. They could have kept the Mopho name for the original keyboard and thrown the Tetra name on this one. Oh, well, a rare misstep for DSI. Let's hope Sequential thinks of the lower end of the market and gives us another board like this, since I'm assuming that this and the Tetra are both out of production now...

      @@noiselabproject9659 Think I missed your comment 10 months ago, but I basically just said the same thing yesterday replying to another comment...a used Tetra and Mopho x4 is close the same price as a new Prophet Rev 2, 8-voice desktop. In some cases MORE than a Rev 2. That's nice for buying new gear, but the used gear bargains just aren't as good as they used to be. Can't complain too much, I guess.

    Hmmm... Just a thought, in addition to copying all patches over and having 8 voices of the same patch, could you also instead accomplish a bit of layering by having a certain patch in the Mopho, and a different patch in the Tetra, but in the same bank location? So 4 voices of one patch and 4 voices of another? I'm probably not describing this correctly...

    • @ProckGnosis
      @ProckGnosis  8 років тому +2

      Understand perfectly. True, if you don't activate the polychain setting, the Mopho X4 will only act as a controller keyboard, feeding the same notes to the Tetra. You could either have two different, layered, 4-voice patches or the same patch with each note using 4 oscillators to make it nice and fat (depending on how much you detune the two patches).
