The print restoration of the original negatives go into the process of DVD and Blu-ray releases. You address how DVDs and Blu-rays are "frivolous, conspicouous technology consumption products", but they're the only real physical access people have to art (everything else is OnDemand, Netflix Instant Play, Hulu, Amazon Rentals etc.).
I disagree. Although presumably fine in it's remastered visual and audio quality - the blu-ray release for "Sierra Madre" has somewhat sub-par special features and generic cover art and "Key Largo" hasn't had a blu-ray transfer yet. I think it's important that Criterion gets these Old Hollywood classics - because like many of the great foreign masterpieces - they don't get the proper physical release.
Anything shot on film is going to look better on blu-ray. Of course The Blair Witch Project looks like crap, it was shot on a crappy video camera. Nosferatu, on the other hand, would look terrific. I don't know why Kino hasn't released a blu-ray. I'm sure it would be a big seller.
