For me, Ran is the best 1985 film. I know that they had some problems with getting the film nominated for best foreign language film (which I think Ran should've won easily), and Sydney Lumet helped that Kurosawa was nominated for best director. Shame that he didn't won that one. I mean, every film that was nominated is great, but that's a shame for Ran, it's beautifully done all around.
***** I wouldn't call it bad, but it's a matter of opinion. I agree with you that Out of Africa wasn't the best film that year. And I know there are some films made only to be Oscar baits (I strongly believe that for the most part 12 years a slave was such a movie), and maybe Out of Africa is one of those, but I repeat, I don't think it's a bad movie. Also, when you mentioned Brazil. That's a top notch. For me, it's on my top 10 list movies of all time for sure. But, Terry Gillaim's work has never been that much recognized by the Academy. Here and there are few nominations for his films.

The first time I watched Out of Africa, I thought it was one of the most boring movies I'd ever seen. The second time I watched it, I thought it was one of the greatest movies I'd ever seen. Seriously. I think it was sometime in the 90s. I rented it from a video store down the block. It was before there was a Blockbuster on every corner. It was about a half mile from my house so it didn't take me long to drive there. I used to rent more than just one movie but I don't remember what else I rented. But I do remember I watched it two times. To be honest, I don't remember how long the interval was between viewings.
I too thought that Out of Africa was a boring film. I thought that it did not deserve to win despite starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford and I still do not like it today. The only thing I can really remember from it today is the wonderful camerawork and its fabulous musical score by John Barry. There was not really not much of a storyline to the film anyway. I'm surprised that it won for best screenplay. My choice for best picture in 1985 was Prizzi's Honor. I guess I am one of the very few people who hated the film The Color Purple in 1985. I still do, a vastly overrated movie. It was nominated for 11 Oscars and did not win any, I'm glad.
I LOOOOVED Prizzi's Honor. Of course, I'm a huge fan of black comedies and that one was one of the best. Great cast! I'm just surprised that Kathleen Turner got robbed of an oscar nomination. She deserved it for her performance.
If Oscar accepted international films for its Best Picture category long ago, Rashomon (1950), Seven Samurai (1954), Kagemusha (1980) and Ran (1985) should have been nominated and even won!!!
I thought Wilder was the youngest of the three, but he was actually the oldest-months older than Huston and a couple of years older than Kurosawa. I’m on the last pages of Conversations with Wilder by Cameron Crowe. The man really took care of himself. He avoided elevators out of fear of getting stuck, but I think that habit ended up helping him physically. God, grant me health like that in my eighties.
I love both "The Color Purple" and "Out of Africa"! I really wish they both weren't released in the same year! I was hoping the movie musical version of "The Color Purple" would win Best Picture so that we could have both "The Color Purple" and "Out of Africa" be Best Picture winners for two separate years, but sadly that didn't work out the way I wanted it to!

Sydney Pollack's (July 1, 1934-May 26, 2008) seems to be a great filmmaker like me. He directed movies such as Out of Africa, released on December 18, 1985, filmed in Kenya. It is based on a true story about Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) who travels to colonial Kenya to join her husband, Bror von Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandeur), who spends their money on a coffee plantation and falls in love with hunter Denys Finch Hatton (Robert Redford). I liked that beautiful scene where the two flew a plane through Africa. Anyways, Pollack was awesome and directed other great films like Havana and Sabrina. John Barry (November 3, 1930-January 30, 2011) was awesome too. He was a great composer, especially for the Flying Over Africa score.
like spanish man that i am they are three great directors but the good thing of cinema is that one of them being japanese with all films in their country he is recognised what he is one of the 20 best directirs of all time. Bravo Akira Kurosawa

Out of Africa was by far the better movie. The Color Purple was like a Hallmark movie, too cliche ridden, and scenes that were overstaged, not natural or believable.
Can't really disagree on best picture etc. because i've only seen the Colour Purple. But the score? no way! The Out of Africa score is absolutely stunning.
@soaphunks Too true. The Academy really needs to think about whether the films they vote for deserve to be immensely watched in the future. By the way, I think it is an absolute insult to Akira Kurosawa to present BP when his own film "RAN" - so clearly the BEST film of 1985 - was snubbed :(
Out of Africa is one of the most beautiful movies I've ever watched! The photography is perfect, the soundtrack is wonderful - not to mention the Meryl Streep's performance, impeccable as always. It really deserved to win the Academy Award for Best Picture that year! But I missed The Purple Rose of Cairo. Even though Out of Africa deserved to win the Oscar in 1985, The Purple Rose of Cairo should at least have been nominated, instead of Witness.

Well, here’s another Oscar winner that didn’t age well and that’s been mostly forgotten by the mainstream public. Best Picture should have went to either Back to the Future or The Color Purple.
Wrong. I'm writing from 2022 and still admiring Out of Africa as the immortal masterpiece it is. The Color Purple is a worse movie and easier to forget. Out of Africa has better slundtrack, better photography and equally good performances (Whoopi Goldberg was amazing but so was Meryl Streep).
Out of Africa was a very good movie, in many ways, but hardly the Best Picture of the Year. The Color Purple should have won the Oscar for Best Picture. Witness was also brilliant film worthy of the win for Best Picture. For many movie fans, this Best Picture decision was and remains an OUTRAGE!

I think the same thing. The only thing I ever remember from Out of Africa is the score by John Barry and the cinematography. Other than those things, it’s one of the more forgettable films to win Best Picture. Whereas people still remember films like Back to the Future, Brazil, The Color Purple & Witness. As a side note: I would also nominate Back to the Future for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Christopher Lloyd, Best Production Design & Best Visual Effects. I didn’t mention Original Screenplay, Best Score or Song & Sound Editing & Mixing because it was already nominated in those categories.
Color purple don´t win any oscar, I Think, but it is a realy great movie. Out of Africa it´s too a nice movie. In my opinion color purple should be win...
anjelica is a wonderful actress... but when Oprah's character (sophia) is totally numb from her time in jail... I mean, just her expression makes me cry
You’d think the academy would have learned from the year before when they let Laurence Olivier present the best picture and he forget to mention the nominations that they were done letting the elderly present
Run this race again today and I guarantee you that "Out of Africa" loses. OOA is one of those movies (like "The English Patient") that "seems" like it will be an ultimate "Oscar-type" movie, only to be overshadowed in later years by the movies it beat out.
Overshadowed in your dreams maybe. I'm writing from 2022 and still enjoying ghe masterpiece of Out of Africa. The Color Purple was fine, but Out of Africa has better soundtrack, better photography and equally good performances (WhoopinGoodberg was excellent, but so was Meryl Streep).
Close contact with director Akira Kurosawa! The camera time slipped in July 1984 at the shooting site of the movie "Ran". You can meet a master who gives gentle and polite acting guidance to actors who do not scold other than the assistant director. While attending Kwansei Gakuin University, he collaborated with a video cameraman and director as a filming assistant and audio manager at the production site of "Ran". It was an exclusive independent production with permission from Director Kurosawa. Instead of having to pay the accommodation fee, the making of random production right was granted to the Herald movie at that time, and it is out in the world
Boston Terrier if only that would have been simple but the academy doesn't want that to be in the best picture nomination, I like bttf and that is very understandably.
If John Huston, Billy Wilder, and Akira Kurosawa presented my movie winning Best Picture I would retire, cause there ain't no way you'll get any better than that
It is embarrassing to see Johnny Huston's disappointment where he himself is among the presenters of an award where one of the films he directed and loses: Prizzi's Honor.
Why would I be referring to the person next to Spielberg when I just stated that Jon Voight's kids are rude for not applauding? James is to the left of Jon Voight and Angelina is to the right.
I think that, possibly, The Color Purple may be the best picture ever made that didn't win the Best Picture Oscar. Several places in that movie where I get teary-eyed with a lump-in-the-throat; now that's a moving experience. Just an observation, and a tour de force by Whoopi Goldberg & Oprah Winfrey.
Blade Runner, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon or Burning (2018), to cite a few, are better movies that The Color Purple and also didn't win the best movie award.
John Huston, Billy Wilder & Akira Kurosawa presenting...it doesn't get more grand than this.
I can’t tell what makes me happier, billy wilder’s face, John Huston’s voice, or Akira Kurosawa’s EXISTENCE
Maybe just the combination of all three of them😍

Cocoon
The Purple Rose of Cairo
Runaway Train
@@hunterolaughlin Don’t you mean Supporting for Lloyd?
Best Supporting Actor then.
Putting Huston and Kurosawa as presenters in a year when both were nominated and lost was such a lack of sensibility by the Academy...
Color purple don´t win any oscar, I Think, but it is a realy great movie. Out of Africa it´s too a nice movie. In my opinion color purple should be win...
The Color Purple had worse soundtrack and worse photography than Out of Africa. Whoopi Golddberg was amazing, but so was Meryl Streep.
Hopefully a movie from Africa would win Best Picture one day. Meryl Streep was good here
For Gades sake become member of the Academy and then vote for "who is deserving or serving"
anjelica is a wonderful actress... but when Oprah's character (sophia) is totally numb from her time in jail... I mean, just her expression makes me cry
Uh-oh--wasn't "Prizzi's Honor" John Huston's movie? Awkward...
2:27 #FAIL. they put the title before announcing the winner
I hadn't noticed it untill I saw your
comment.
THE COLOR PURPLE got robbed that year. The Picture, the score, the screenplay, Oprah and Whoopi: they all deserved Oscars.
I dont think he announced the winner - I think they had the names written down on paper because they had trouble reading the teleprompter.
Billy Wilder, oh gosh.. those were the times when Oscars had class !
The Color Purple was fine, but Out of Africa has better soundtrack, better photography and equally good performances (WhoopinGoodberg was excellent, but so was Meryl Streep).
who's here in 2022? Out of Africa is timeless, classic
Instead of having to pay the accommodation fee, the making of random production right was granted to the Herald movie at that time, and it is out in the world
Back to the Future REALLY should've won. :p
Boston Terrier if only that would have been simple but the academy doesn't want that to be in the best picture nomination, I like bttf and that is very understandably.
At the 2:00 mark you can see Angelina Jolie with her dad Jon Voight.
Pollack just got excited Kurosawa is saying his name ...
Citizen Kane?
Blade Runner, A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Barry Lyndon or Burning (2018), to cite a few, are better movies that The Color Purple and also didn't win the best movie award.
2:00 in white, a young Angelina Jolie
The name of the best picture came up before the trio announced the winner
