Went to my local music store to buy a used CR120, they sold it before I got there but gave me a great deal on a new super crush 100. I have been using tube amps for the past 15 years and this is right up there with them! Currently listing my Egnater Tweaker 40 after picking up this gem
I own this and it’s the best amp i ever had. Ive had all kinds of amps, fenders, mesa, vintage bla bla - this amp has what i want, tone at any volume - and it looks ace. My favorite amp ever, for $500 no brainer. Jfets sound very good. For $500 i feel like a genius when i show it to people… it kicks ars. I even dig the reverb, no clashy spring dinky tank sound… just a nice basic mid sized verb.
I picked up a super crush 100 and absolutely love it. It's the only amp I can use now. Would love to see a stand-alone preamp version of the super-crush!
Ade gives such a perfect description of the technical specs, what they actually do and how it all functions musically. I've learned so much from his descriptions on this channel, thank you Ade!
The first Orange product I bought a few years was the Two Stroke pedal, and I still love it! I also have the KongPressor pedal. For a couple years I have considerd adding the Getaway Driver to my pedal board, so that is the Orange product I actually wish for on a regular basis. I believe I have listened to every UA-cam video that demos the product. Thank you, Orangeamps!
This amp is killer! The master volume knob controls the XLR direct output level. For silent recording, I confirmed with Orange that it is safe to use the amp without a load or speaker cab. I’ve been rocking it with the Celestion G12H-150 Redback impulse response. Sounds great!!
Are you using IR on the line out or adding an IR on the cab sim? I would prefer the Di. to be pre mastervol. it makes much more practical sense in a live setting, i.e. you can turn the amp down, check the monitor sounds, and then adjust the mastervol to taste, to fit the room. FWIW
For silent recording, I have tested 3 different configurations: • DI Out • Effect Loop Send • Speaker Output to CaptorX I use an IR in all 3 cases. The CabSim speaker emulation on the DI Out is just frequency filtering so it still requires an IR as it does not sound good without one. There are two different filter options, but unfortunately there is no option to disable the filtering.
Create demo by Ade and I love how honest he is. Yes Rockerverb is untouchable but this one is very appealing for the people on budget. Still won't play anything except my OR15
Yah Bruh, I have that one too and it is a sweet amp. Very Good amp if you need some Horsepower to play with a Band. Excellent Amplifier for those that work for a living & have kids, or just starting out w/ a Band, on a budget, cannot afford elite 2-3k and up amps.
something sturdy and loud enough to gig with without all the maintenance and price, Thank you Orange, One Day I will Rep these bad boys. one day. Keep it Real and Krank it up !!!
Just ordered one. I've been playing a Marshall JCM900 for the past 15 years. It's become such a problem child for me. Something is always wrong with it. Not knocking the head, It has a lot of road wear on it. A lot miles in the van. Either way its been in the shop three times since April(still not completely fixed) and I just can't trust taking it out on the road anymore. Def bitter sweet. I'm going out on a small tour in October so I decided to get something brand new, reliable and tubeless for once. I'm a bit nervous about it. But for the money, and 30 day trial I couldn't resist. Plus I've yet to find a truly bad review. Seeing this video with the designer just made me feel that much more confident in my purchase. I'll give a full update.
Jfet is the real deal. I have this 80s fender solid state amplifier that is awesome! But the crunch channel is very difficult to get along with. I bought boutique jfet pedal, that was supposed to give a solid state fender that power amp punch of a blackface tube fender. So Instead of putting in front, I actually installed into the effects loop. Man! It took that god awful distortion and made it sound like heaven!! So an 80s fender opamp preamp going into a jfet pedal - and it improved 30X!
I just tried one, it's awesome! I won't be buying it any time soon, because I have the Rocker 15 Terror, but it is really great. I think it felt and sounded best with the channel volume all the way up, and then using the master volume for adjusting the actual volume.
@@JohnnyRaven69 I think it sounds best at medium to higher volumes, but everything sounds better when it's loud. I'd recommend trying it yourself if you can! As an alternative you could check out the smaller crush amps or the micro terror amps.
@@slash148 of course. But the amp has a master volume, channel (preamp) volume and gain. With the channel volume down and the gain way up it sounds very fizzy and crappy. I've seen many people on UA-cam use it like that and it never sounds as good as it could sound.
You can shout about tubes VS solid state amps, once upon a time it was an easy argument, but one thing is for certain...If you arent recording and gathering a specific tone, no one is going to know a shred of difference with this amp, its 90% there in tone, brilliant!!
Although it's nice to save money, my decision for buying the CR 120h was strictly because I wanted more articulation and dependability. When I turn it on, I know it's going to sound the way I dialed it in previously and I don't have to wait a minute for it to warm up. A minute can seem like a lifetime when I've got an idea I'm dying to try. I don't want a tube amp! I love the CR 120 and it sounds like I'm going to like the Super Crush 100 even more..... especially with the cab sim! Nobody would be able to tell if I'm using solid state with the way I do have it dialed in.....I love it and I've gotten a lot of compliments on my sound with the CR 120h!
Sounded great. You might say I'm a fan of Orange as I have the Poor Mans Special Dark Terror 7/15w, OR15, CR120, & BAX Bangeetar Pre-Amp.Also several Orange Plug-Ins. These are great times we're living in my Guitar playing brothers and sisters. You don't have to be rich to sound great either. Now, it all comes down to playing so practice, practice, practice ha ha.
I absolutely love my Orange Crush 120 head, I've heard many say its no good for modern metal, but its a great pedal platform so slap an od pedal/noise gate in front andn an eq pedal in the fx loop n the thing absolutely kills!
Same, I mostly use a boss sd-1 in front of mine and it rips. Then for like, doomy stonery kinda vibes a fuzz pedal through the dirty channel just makes a wall of sound lol
Ordered mine yesterday. I'm so damn excited to get it plugged in and playing. This is what my Groove, Stoner metal band needs. It fits my style. It will sound great on Van Halen covers to Iron Maiden covers to Pantera covers.
@@pattillo21 Awesome!!!! I have found so many different types of sounds. I've run pedals through it in front and through the effects loop and it handles them all very well. Never does it sound like a Marshall or a Mesa. No matter how you dial it in and no matter what effects you use it always maintains the Orange sound and tone. I wouldn't want it to sound like anything else. That's why I choose Orange. Great amp.
I love my Orange Micro Terror, and this amp looks like the next addition to my gear collection. Even the Orange MT running through a run of the mill 4x12 cab screams. I'm strongly considering this amp for gigging when we move our band out of the garage. Great work guys!
LOVING MINE! What an amp. Last time anybody did something remotely this awesome with solid state analog, it was the Marshall MosFET Lead 100. The Super-Crush is a much better gain channel. The clean is great too, but my MosFET was a bit sweeter (it could be scooped) like the Pro 120. It had the advantage of a mid control. Maybe I need to get the Crush Pro 120 and an A/B box. (PS… Little tip… It loves a Dyna Comp with the level high and the compression almost off into a medium gain for solos)
Thank you Ade! While the CR120 was a great amp? I personally couldn't gel with the one I briefly had. I discovered later that it either didn't get on with the 100 year old American wiring in the house I was in, or it just may had been an unfortunate "dud', as it hated my pedals, and would clip in the bad way. I'm super stoked with the choice to go with Jfets this go round, as this new Super Crush will most definitely now vibe with boost and OD pedal more convincingly because as a result, and the other decision to power it with the Class A/B Pedal Baby circuit means it will also provide a more convincing tone and impedance compared to the modern Class D offerings flooding the market. All in all? I think you got yourself the makings of a true "winner winner chicken dinner" on your hands mate! Hats off to you once more! Cheers from the North East USA dude!
I think a lot of people try it out and try and use it like any other amp, or through the wrong speakers, and end up not liking it. I mean I did the same thing, I'm on my second CR120 now lol But once I kinda learned its quirks and how to set it right I've fallen in love. It's not like my favorite amp ever and I wouldn't use it in the studio, but for a cheap reliable live amp it's great. I will say they really don't take their sound until they're at band volume; I rarely play mine at home (I'll just use an amp sim instead) because they're too fizzy and thin sounding at low volume. But when you crank them up through some vintage 30's they're a different amp... Like, my band plays mostly Jimmy Eat World type-stuff, lower gain, and it does that great (the trick is less gain than you think you need and just play harder, once you go past like 1o'clock it's too much gain for anything almost), but it also is ferocious for most kinds of metal when you turn it up. Turned up with the right boost pedal in front it's brutal. And yet, if I don't want the orange sound I've been able to go through the clean channel (channel volume very low to stay clean and master up to compensate) and use it as a pedal platform and it does that great too.
IDK I'm rambling, but yeah I can totally see why a lot of people (myself included) sleep on them- you just have to know how to work with it
I bought a CR120 3 years ago, have had a Marshall DSL40, 2 Vox Ac10s, a Vox Ac15, a Peavey 6505+, a Fender Hotrod 2x12, and a Orange Micro 20 watt hybrid head. You wanna know which amp I had before all those amps and which one I still have and love? My CR120 crush. I sold every other amp except my Crush bass combo and my Cr120 head. Literally sounds exactly like a valve amp to me and takes all my pedals so well. The natural gain on it is exactly what I need and it dials in an amazing tone I use for jazz. Half the time I don’t use pedals because the amp has everything already. I love that amp to death, you must have got a dud.
@@twilightaudioelectronics Most likely, but I also tried to use it like I would a tube amp in a variety of scenarios with no good results. With Orange going with Jfets this go round however? I expect the Supercrush to respond to boost and OD pedals more naturally if used in a more conservative fashion. Honestly? I see this amp selling like freakin' hotcakes within the near future!
@@EasyHeat Okay you have a really good point. The Jfets on the dirty channel do make it very round and not very aggressive OD like. I agree the dirty channel is very clear and crystal like but it’s really dirty and thick for some reason that appeals to me a lot. However the clean channel serves as an amazing pedal platform for just about any kind of music
@@twilightaudioelectronics If I were to buy a gigging amp tomorrow? I'd definitely get the Super Crush on the grounds of potentially zero maintenance and consistent tone reliability. Not only does it sound amazing on it's own, and seriously look the part to the nines, but it's power section design is literally just the existing Pedal Baby Class A/B circuit. So hypothetically, by incorporating any modeler with an FX loop, or even better a Victory Amps Kraken preamp via the Four Cable Method?! The sky is basically the limit and I bet it would not only sound ACE AF, but would be a tank built touring rig at a fraction of the more typical investments! Honestly, just thinking about that scenario has got me seriously gassing pretty hard for one with a matching vertical 2x12 at the moment. Hahaha! Cheers man!
I just got my Super Crush 100 head, and it’s a sonic storm! This genuinely has to be the best solid state guitar amp ever built. It has all the signature Orange drive we all love and a glorious clean channel that has headroom for days! I wish for a PPC212V for the holidays. #WISHGRANTED
This sounds great, seems like a step up from the Crush 120, some of the Crush Pro dirty channel stetting seemed a little "muddy sounding" to me. I still love my Crush 120 Combo, but I think I'll need one of these some time
This is such a great video., having this amp's designer taking us through this amp's capabilities..there was a used one (combo) at GC at another store, so I picked it up...supposed to be in today. I haven't had a guitar amp in years...I have been using modelers to do my gigs (and depending on the gig, still will be using modeling), but in recording, I've just not been happy with modeler results...as well as playing out...I am going to experiment with this, putting it in the chain via the the cab simulator output...in the front, out the cab sim, using the send and return of the SY 1000) of what I am currently using as a modeler. (BOSS SY1000, which has models of amps, various modeled guitar tones, effects, etc)..hoping for great results...Thanks, Ade, and the folks at Orange for taking the time to do this overview.
It's true, the SC 100 sure enough uses JFETs in the preamp section. But so do the Crush Pro 60 and 120, stacked JFETs to be exact (a guy on Reddit opened up a 120, and posted pictures of the circuit.) The Supers have improved tone filtering, which is why it's brighter and more 'pedal-friendly.' Also, as Ade said, the 100's use the Pedal Baby power amp circuit, which definitely improves both Presence and Resonance. This is a good time to be a solid state rocker.
The new amp looks incredible, I just don't need it. Got a CR60 and swapped the stock speaker with a V30. Was swapping speakers worth the effort and price? Yes!
I would go back and forth between the stock speaker in the CR60, and running it into a V30 loaded 4X12. I usually preferred the V30 setup, but I thought the Voice of the World still sounded killer!

Late comment, but EXCELLENT EXCELLENT VIDEO AND EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT AMP!! I purchased this Amp before I saw this video and Sir, YOU NAILED IT PERFECTLY!!! IM SO GLAD YOU WORK WITH ORANGE!! It's by far, I mean FAR, the best solid-state Amp period! A Boss Katana is very, very good and has lots of their effect technology put into it, but as for SOUND, it's NOT comparable! Hell, I use boss pettles with your Amp. But as far as the comparability to VALVE AMPS, THE ORANGE CRUSHED IT! The distortion is so Fricking good and easy to set its nuts!! For $500.00 US? Unless you can make a better one, this IS!!.......
For a solid state ok it is what it is better than some but not a tube. But Ade Emsley might be the coolest dude of all time!! He just looks like a rock n roller. Like he could have been in blue cheer or he could be in the sword, or even play in a band like earthles!
@@edrowley1 you can run it into a PPC112 just don’t max out the master volume. You’d have to get very loud to blow the speaker and it’s unlikely you’ll be going over 60 watts in most situations. If there’s a problem you’ll hear it in the speaker clipping. If you’re a bedroom player you’ll be fine if you’re gigging you’ll have to be a bit more carful but I suspect the sound guy will be having words before you get close to blowing a speaker and the XLR on the back can be plugged into the board.
so, the D.I. will actually change the tone when u push it in or out? And the xlr ,,,I would need to locate a cord that has XLR male on one end and a 3.5 or USB on the other end in order to put it into my computer?
@Orange Amps, I bought this amp and love it. I play post hardcore/hardcore punk music, and run some pedals through the front of the amp and like the AMP gain to be pretty high. In terms of volume, I've heard that for these amps you want to crank the master volume and then turn up the channel volume to taste (depending on size of room, band, etc) Can you confirm if that's the best way to run this amp? (High Master volume with lower channel volume?) Or should I have the channel volume maxed out (for dirty channel) and then turn up the master volume. I run a lot of gain from amp, and tube scream/distortion pedal. Appreciate any feedback. Thank you
Would've been nice to have either an IR loader or an option to turn off the cab sim from the DI. The analogue cab sim just doesn't sound like a real cab
It seems the cab sim is still a raw signal but with two different EQ curve options to choose from. I’ve been rocking the closed back option with a Celestion G12H-150 Redback impulse response. Sounds killer! I also confirmed with Orange that it is safe to use without a load or speaker cab. Perfect for late night silent recording.
as a bedroom amp will this be hard to get to a low reasonable volume because it is 100 watts ? or because of it being solid state will it be pretty easy ?

@@danielcarter3928 Without a doubt. Imo 10 inch speakers don't sound any good. I prefer 212 myself as they give a fuller sound, but as the super crush only comes in 112 that'll have to do. If you could, I'd go with a head and 212 cab. You could get a cab that's not Orange to save some cash as the PPC 212 is kind of expensive and if you're not gigging you won't need one of Oranges high quality. Btw I suggest 212 rather than 412 bc you can't move a 412 on your own. 212s are a little difficult but at least it's possible.

Serious competition for Fender’s ToneMaster line. The Crush Pro was a great amp. This model supplies the cab sim I felt the old Pro needed.
Yup. Now they just need to have stock of it in the US so we can actually buy them.
Ade gives such a perfect description of the technical specs, what they actually do and how it all functions musically. I've learned so much from his descriptions on this channel, thank you Ade!
Orange have the best solid state amps. I currently gig with the CR120 and it absolutely screams. Can’t wait to pick this one up
The first Orange product I bought a few years was the Two Stroke pedal, and I still love it!
FWIW
For silent recording, I have tested 3 different configurations:
• DI Out
• Effect Loop Send
• Speaker Output to CaptorX
I use an IR in all 3 cases. The CabSim speaker emulation on the DI Out is just frequency filtering so it still requires an IR as it does not sound good without one. There are two different filter options, but unfortunately there is no option to disable the filtering.
Amazing designer he is, and has turned me into an Orange fan 🤘💀🤘
This is such a fucking phenomenal amp head.
This sounds way better than the solid state I had in the early 90’s that got me started!
something sturdy and loud enough to gig with without all the maintenance and price, Thank you Orange, One Day I will Rep these bad boys.
Is it good on low volumes too?!
@@JohnnyRaven69 I think it sounds best at medium to higher volumes, but everything sounds better when it's loud. I'd recommend trying it yourself if you can!
As an alternative you could check out the smaller crush amps or the micro terror amps.
Thats how it should be. Distortion in the power section of a solid state sounds just... BAD.
And only $500… i think best tone for dollar in a 100 watt head
Orange headstock coolest headstock I’ve seen in a while
Their guits are EXPENSIVE though
@@ATthemusician yeah true but it is cheaper than other custom shop instruments by a bit. *cough Gibson
How’s the amp going now?
@@pattillo21 Awesome!!!! I have found so many different types of sounds. I've run pedals through it in front and through the effects loop and it handles them all very well. Never does it sound like a Marshall or a Mesa. No matter how you dial it in and no matter what effects you use it always maintains the Orange sound and tone. I wouldn't want it to sound like anything else. That's why I choose Orange. Great amp.
@@roosterj2599 hell yeah man that’s what’s up!! 🤘🏼
@@pattillo21 Did you pick one up?
I love my Orange Micro Terror, and this amp looks like the next addition to my gear collection. Even the Orange MT running through a run of the mill 4x12 cab screams. I'm strongly considering this amp for gigging when we move our band out of the garage. Great work guys!
I highly recommend this amp it is my fa orite and aounds amazing for any genre
Can you record with the XLR connection without connecting a speaker cab? 🤘✌️
Yes
Man this guy is cool, thanks for making the tiny terror, such a fun amp.
Love your videos. I wish you would make more ;)
Thank you Ade!
I mean I did the same thing, I'm on my second CR120 now lol
But once I kinda learned its quirks and how to set it right I've fallen in love.
Well that explanation sold me on this amp
There's plenty of us still rocking 100w amps.
Will be for a very long time!
Rite here 🤘🏼
I do as well unless going thru my band’s PA, then it’s 15 watt OR 15 :)
I gave up & pulled two tubes on the PVWinsor, the other has been an Orange GRO50(yes,50) since 1997.
I’m rocking a 200w Randall Century 200 still. I love Randall’s solid state stuff.
"It looks way more tarty", indeed it does. Sounds awesome as well
This sounds great, seems like a step up from the Crush 120, some of the Crush Pro dirty channel stetting seemed a little "muddy sounding" to me. I still love my Crush 120 Combo, but I think I'll need one of these some time
I literally just bought this and for 500 bucks it sound good. Once plug my mxr 10band eq it changed everything
On my list for 2022! Great for pedals!
Dave Simpson brought my here. He's great and turned me onto Orange l amplifier 😊
Very tempted by this although I would love orange to do a stereo version like the rocker 32, that would be awesome.
3:38 Does anyone know where this riff comes from? Sounds cool and familiar.
Yes!
Yes!! Definitely it’s worth it! Cab, speakers, mic & mic placement makes way more impact to your tone than the head, tubes & pickup
I would go back and forth between the stock speaker in the CR60, and running it into a V30 loaded 4X12. I usually preferred the V30 setup, but I thought the Voice of the World still sounded killer!
8 or 16 ohm? Am I correct in thinking I can put an 8 ohm speaker in my pro 60 and it'll out out the full 60 watts?
I've been kicking around trying v30's or swamp thangs in my cr120c
Good choice seeing as Orange use v30 in their PPC112 cab.
@3:55 OR30R in the background!!!!! Orange when is this beauty coming out?
Proud owner of the Orange Crush Pro 120H , Super Crush 100 combo, Super Crush 100H. Next in my sites 212 Vertical cab and the Crush 412 cab.
I was thinking of saving for hiwatts but im starting to get interested in these amps now
They are pretty phenomenal.
I ordered one last week!
Thanks Ade - love your work
Been waiting on this one for a while, and didn’t even know it
Already got one preordered
Awesome sounding amp ! ! I Only wished the combo had the FAT Picture frame look .
I wish it had the fat framing on the front too, but I'm still buying it anyways 😂
Wow.... I didn't know that Derek Smalls works for Orange Amps! ;) (Love your amps :) )
I was a very early customer in the original London shop...
I just ordered mine I can finally give my Heavy Mesa Boogie Mark 2 B rest I am 61 and I love my Mesa Boogie but I can't lift it anymore my new Orange Crush Super 100 combo is perfect for me it only weighs 39.8 pounds and I can practice all day with out burning up any Power tubes I only have one question does it make any noise when I am playing in clubs with alot of lights are ungrounded clubs I have had that problem in the past with solid state Amps if so is there a solution to keep the Amp quiet from unwanted hum noises and one more question can you run two of these Amps together Thank you Orange Amps I can't wait to get my new Amp in November I already ordered it 😎🎸🤘🎶🎵
Love the sounds of the amp, and the look. But please do tell us more about the one behind Adrian????
Sounds great! I hope they do a 50watt version
Yes, my thoughts exactly!
Why would you need that ?
It's solid state so turning the volume down makes no difference you can play it at lower settings
@@Soldano999 Orange PPC112 is rated at 60 watts. That's why I would want it. I have one and a Tiny Terror, why buy another cab?
@@edrowley1 you can run it into a PPC112 just don’t max out the master volume. You’d have to get very loud to blow the speaker and it’s unlikely you’ll be going over 60 watts in most situations. If there’s a problem you’ll hear it in the speaker clipping. If you’re a bedroom player you’ll be fine if you’re gigging you’ll have to be a bit more carful but I suspect the sound guy will be having words before you get close to blowing a speaker and the XLR on the back can be plugged into the board.
@@sid35gb Thanks for the info. A hundred watts is still a lot! LoL!
this dude rules.
man i really want one of these now
"... and it looks way more tarty"? Is that what he said? LOL!
Thank goodness for CC
Getting one of these for sure.
Oh, I'm getting this.
so, the D.I. will actually change the tone when u push it in or out? And the xlr ,,,I would need to locate a cord that has XLR male on one end and a 3.5 or USB on the other end in order to put it into my computer?
plug the XLR from the amp straight into your audio interface
That was an amazing review
wondering how the amp/speaker sim sounds
Nigel makes killer amps!
i wish there was a channel LED light so when you use a pedal to switch channel you have a visual indication on the amp as well
his playing is reminiscent ov hendrix , love it ...
any chance of releasing an update where you can disable the amp sim on the direct out?
This guy makes me wanna buy this amp even though I don’t need it!🤣
@Orange Amps,
I bought this amp and love it. I play post hardcore/hardcore punk music, and run some pedals through the front of the amp and like the AMP gain to be pretty high.
In terms of volume, I've heard that for these amps you want to crank the master volume and then turn up the channel volume to taste (depending on size of room, band, etc)
Can you confirm if that's the best way to run this amp? (High Master volume with lower channel volume?)
Or should I have the channel volume maxed out (for dirty channel) and then turn up the master volume.
I run a lot of gain from amp, and tube scream/distortion pedal.
Appreciate any feedback. Thank you
Would've been nice to have either an IR loader or an option to turn off the cab sim from the DI. The analogue cab sim just doesn't sound like a real cab
Use real speakers, push air, pissoff the neighbors cause hearing damage
It seems the cab sim is still a raw signal but with two different EQ curve options to choose from. I’ve been rocking the closed back option with a Celestion G12H-150 Redback impulse response. Sounds killer! I also confirmed with Orange that it is safe to use without a load or speaker cab. Perfect for late night silent recording.
Love this guy
I'm pretty sure this is going to be my next amp 🤘👹🤘
as a bedroom amp will this be hard to get to a low reasonable volume because it is 100 watts ? or because of it being solid state will it be pretty easy ?
You'll be fine. Ss sounds the same at lower volume.
@@castleanthrax1833 ya i’ve got the Crush 35RT currently which i love. i put a Celestion G10 Vintage in it, and when i upgrade i’m thinking about going with the Super Crush. i wish the 35RT had a little more “presence”, do you think the Super Crush 100 combo would be a noticeable upgrade over the Crush 35RT?
@@danielcarter3928 Without a doubt. Imo 10 inch speakers don't sound any good. I prefer 212 myself as they give a fuller sound, but as the super crush only comes in 112 that'll have to do. If you could, I'd go with a head and 212 cab. You could get a cab that's not Orange to save some cash as the PPC 212 is kind of expensive and if you're not gigging you won't need one of Oranges high quality. Btw I suggest 212 rather than 412 bc you can't move a 412 on your own. 212s are a little difficult but at least it's possible.
Hi what your cabinet
That sounds amazing, and I love tube amps. I think solid state can be its own thing
