    I just ordered mine (15"). Am upgrading from my 4 year old MacBook Pro which I just sold online for $1600. So my new MacBook Pro really only cost me $900. I thought long and hard wether I'll miss the ports, but then I realised I haven't used a single port on my MBP for at least 3 years, so I think I'll be fine. As for the overall specs, I was actually still fine with the speed of my current MBP and Apple promises around 50% - 100% more performance, so I'm very happy overall.

    I think this is the beginning of the end for the Mac line. If it does go downhill from here then Apple have deserved every bit of it. I find it hard to believe many people are going to buy these at their current price points but then again there are a lot of people that buy Apple products just because it's Apple. I'm even thinking of getting rid of my 2015 MacBook Pro just out of principle. For me at least, with every new hardware release just comes more anger and frustration. People need to wake up and take a stand and stop thinking "I could learn to get used to it". Apple have no direction with their Mac line and the addition of the touch bar is evidence of this.

      James Chambers I actually did that very thing and swapped over to the surface pro 4, although I'm really tempted with a book to be fair. I remember why apple use to be the industry standard for a lot of things. Need to code? You can do that no problem on a mac. Photography? No problem. Video editing? Easy. But now I just feel their putting profit first at the expense of a lot of their more professional users. It's one of the reasons I'm trying to switch to Microsoft, watch any of their presentations and they talk about how great their users are and how each new feature is intended to innovate and push forward what their users can do, I just don't get that impression any more from apple.

      I agree :) I find it fascinating though there has been a lot of flack about the macbook pro's yet there seems to be 4-5 week wait in both touch bar models and that delay is increasing. So it seems people are still ordering.

      ***** Good point about seeing whether sales have been affected in the longer run. In my opinion I am just surprised cause theres seems to be so much hate around the web and on youtube. Yet end of year quarterly sales are predicted to be at the highest they have ever had apparently for Macs. It seems interesting thats all.

    Great and fair review Dave! Just curious though, you said you think this is the best 13" display on the market. Do you really think that? I was able to view both this and the QHD+ XPS 13 almost side by side last night at Best Buy. I have to say, the XPS display, in my opinion, blew this one out of the water.
    I played with the new MacBook Pro first, and was so impressed at the display, especially coming from my MacBook Air's awful display. But then I went over to the XPS and wow, it was far better than anything I'd seen.

    • @Dave2D
      @Dave2D  7 років тому +43

      +rancwr the qhd+ screen is actually used in the video. I use both the Xps 13/15 regularly. I prefer the macbook screen. Brighter screen. better colours out of the box. Better glass surface. The xps is VERY close on image quality and has a much thinner bezel AND touch, but I'd pick the macbook for best image between the 2

    • @rancwr
      @rancwr 7 років тому +3

      Thanks Dave. I'm not so certain, but I guess they're close enough to be somewhat subjective.
      I'm so torn. I've been waiting for a new MacBook Pro for so long but there are so many things about it that have me debating to go with it or the XPS (a surprisingly awesome machine I only really explored after the disappointing MacBook announcement); the horrible keyboard, the plethora of dongles I'm going to need, the PRICE! :) ...all that said, I have an Apple ecosystem at home so not having a MacBook would be a big hole in that. This base model is too underpowered so I'd need to get one of the touch models making it even pricier. Urgh. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

      Overpriced? Try robbery, outright theft, and fraud. Apple wasn't like this when Steve was still alive. They actually gave you good value for the money. Now they just give you something underpowered, anorexic, and neutered and charge you 20-30% more for it.

    • @colombiantom
      @colombiantom 7 років тому +2

      I agree with you, but they don´t target most people like PC´s do, they target a niche of the market and this niche is willing to pay the price because the build quality is just the best, the software is smoother than windows and the connectivity with other apple devices like iphone. I now have a macbook pro, but I´ve been looking at HP´s specter 360 and it looks amazing and the price is good, but the build quality when compared to the macbook is good but not great, the mouse is also good, not great, the screen is ok, but not great, but the macbook does cost around $400 more plus dongles.

    This is by far the most honest & well thought out review of the new base MacBook Pro yet. I've had mine for a week too and agree with all the points you've made in this video - a good machine all round, even if it is pricey. Lots of other youtube reviewers just wrote the machine off from the spec sheet because they cut the ports & increased the price. Thanks Dave for actually giving us a review from a user's experience. This video reaffirmed for me why you're my go to tech reviewer on youtube (along with MKBHD) and why you have got my subscription!

    • @AlejandroLZuvic
      @AlejandroLZuvic 7 років тому +4

      Nara P nah, most of the time it goes between 25% to 60% depending on the hour of the day and what I'm doing (coding isn't the same as watching a movie). But the 500 nits are a great feature for those who like to bring their laptops outside (I work from home so I admit it isn't very normal to go work by the pool LOL).
      The 67% more contrast and wider color gamut are great for photographers and designers. Amateur photographer here.

      Nik Holloman 'I would love to see a video dedicated to testing its gaming capabilities' I was referring to anyone getting a mac for gaming, as why would you want to see its ability to game if you don't want it for gaming. That's like getting a Apple TV and testing its gaming ability, sure I guess it could do that; but it isn't made for it so it isn't gunna be any good for it

    • @yahnikh.3775

      Sam Felton I own a MacBook Pro and use it primarily for school work but, I do some light gaming. I like apple's Mac OS. That's keeping me from moving to windows. If the newer mac could handle heavier gameplay then I would consider buying it. I don't think anyone buys a Mac for gaming but, it's an added bonus if it could handle some good titles.

    I think my favourite two things about this laptop are: 1. the fact they finally offer Space Grey as an option and 2. the bigger trackpad.
    That's seriously it. As a PC user, two of the main things I've been jealous about are MagSafe and the killer battery life. One no longer exists and the other isn't nearly as hard to find in Windows-based alternatives!
    With all the praise of it's "25% more colours" display and hearing rumours of possible DCI-P3 colour space... seeing a calibrated result of only 74% AdobeRGB is laughable. Razer's base model displays do better our of the box and they aren't being marketed at creatives. Dell's XPS line is a step above and more!
    Sure the base model is supposed to replace the Air. But it's far more expensive and you actually lose ports from an already freakishly thin device! The only laptop the MacBook Pro has more ports than is the laughable MacBook itself. As a photographer using CompactFlash I can handle the loss of the SD card, but restricting the entire I/O to one port is just silly. Out of the box one can't even connect a brand new iPhone to their brand new MacBook without an adapter. How has the Mac eco-system fallen apart so quickly? Apple lost a pretty huge opportunity to knock it out of the park with this update. Don't even get me started on the 8gb of RAM being standard with absolutely no option of more than 16...

      most of the neg reviews are a result from the adapter not allowing data passthrough on the USB-C port (it only allows power). but in the case of this 13" MBP, that's np since the laptop has a 2nd USB-C port.

    • @JannikPitt
      @JannikPitt 7 років тому +4

      I agree that it's completely overprices, but a 500-900$ notebook probably won't compare with respect to display quality, build quality (why is it that no Windows notebook has the same premium build?) and probably OS quality (that depends on your point of view). Personally wouldn't buy the Macbook for that price either, but it's a shame that Windows notebook manufactures can't really keep up with the awesome quality and features the Macbook has.
      What I wanted to say that it is completely nonsensical to say that you can build a good gaming PC for the same price, a stationary Desktop PC just has a total different purpose than the Macbook (or any other portable notebook for that matter), so why would you compare them?

    • @user-rs3lg6un4n
      @user-rs3lg6un4n 7 років тому +11

      Ale Zuvic A dedicated GPU would allow for gpu accelerated rendering times and 3D work such as game design. It would also free up ram, as a dGPU has it's own. That's also not the only thing I'm criticising, I also don't like that it (13 inch) only has a dual core CPU.

    • @aoobbb
      @aoobbb 7 років тому +1

      Gavin Scherer The main idea why it has a dual core CPU is because the 13-inch is there to replace Macbook Air. The 13-inch Macbook Pro should not be Pro, it should be Air.

    Some thoughts of an Apple employee. "So a long time Apple fan needs a new phone and new computer. He goes into the Apple Store and spends $1100 on an iPhone and a fair $2800 for a new MacBook Pro. He gets home and needs to transfer his music library to his New iPhone 7 plus. Takes the USB cable from his brand new iPhone and goes to plug it into his New Mac hmmm wait that's not going to fit in this USB C port. I am sure they have included adapter right? Fuck no!!! Maybe they just forgot to put mine in here🤔🤔🤔. Well, shit I will just have to listen to my music on my Mac no problem. Takes headphones out of the iPhone box to find a set of headphones that he can't even plug into his brand new $3000 MacBook "Pro". What about all that talk about how the 3.5mm headphone jack is a way of the past. I guess they were just blowing💨 smoke up my ass when they were preaching that nonsense. Then says to himself well I will just have to break this bitch in with some video editing after all that's what puts bread on the table. He's got some video he recorded earlier so he's ready to go. Gets his $4000 camera and pulls out the SD card then goes to plug it into his "Pro" wait a second! WTF, where is the slot??!!!!! Damn they should really just take the pro out of the name. Well, $200 later and a bunch of shitty💩 looking adapters and he can finally do everything he was able to do a week ago. It's sure is a good thing money grows on trees around here🤑.” Change is I agree essential to life, but change too fast and you will forget what it is you set out to change.

      FlameFlash How is it inconvenient? because 2% of MBP buyers (photographers) don't get the outdated SD card slot? Apple shouldn't make a laptop to please the ~2%.
      Yes SD cards are outdated, and slow. Fastest SD cards run at merely 90 MB/s max. Samsung is getting 500 mb/s on their new yet to be released smaller UFS memory cards.

      Most DSLR cameras come with usb mode anyways, no need to take the SD out.

      Yah i guess i can see that but IMO loosing a lot of functionality and practicality for a port-less look is not a good trade-off. Also its just no longer a pro with that dual core and no gpu

      There will always been a need fo SD cards for cameras. Photographers sometimes have to shoot hundreds, even thousands of images in the field before being able to load to a computer.

      SD have been around for about 10 years now and hasnt changed at all, same low speed and the need to all the time have to stick them in and out. We live in the wireless era where everything is in the cloud. Thanks why I love shooting photos with my smartphone, by the time I get home, all the photos are already uploaded to my account and synced across all my devices ;)

      It's a MacBook PRO not a a MacBook, 'look I can load my amateur cell phone pics' computer. And for PROFESSIONAL photographers taking hundreds of high res RAW files, wireless is no where near fast enough. SD cards have been around for 10 years because they serve a purpose that a Thunderbolt port doesn't! If you think a very expensive "pro" computer is for camera phone photos, you are what all the Apple haters are talking about.

    IMO, the big thing about this laptop is the TB3 port (& USB-C), at least when considering this vs last year's model. Having that port means I can easily put pretty much anything external, including a top of the line GPU and use it fully.
    Also, I think I'm going to get this model (sans Touch Bar), as it's the least overpriced of the bunch, but still provides a good deal of the capabilities. I'd just max out the RAM, though 8GB is enough for most people. I'd want it for 3D work and VMs (virtual machines).
    As for whether it is pro or not, what makes a machine pro? Generally, I'd say it is having a certain level of hardware, such that it's performance and reliability fits certain segments of professional work. This is easier to determine for a desktop. I guess I'd say that if previous Mac laptops have been pro, than this is as well. And, given the external expansion possibilities, this might be the most pro for Apple laptops yet.
    That said, I'm annoyed, for sure, with Apple's direction with the Mac, especially on the software front. And, overall as a company, in shifting to profits/business101 > UX, instead of putting UX first, as I feel they used to do.

    Basing judgement on the Pro moniker is a bit silly, as the MacBook Pro has adapted over the years and is now moving into the consumer and educational market so Pro is just not relevant anymore, the market is too small for the line to survive and Apple has to explore other markets. I have been using the MacBook Pro for eight yeArs and I am not a Pro user, so loads of ports and the latest chipset is not an issue, my current one is five years old and does the job well. I agree the last years model is the way to go, but try and get them at any sort of discount, even second hand ones are selling close to retail, another reason why haters saying these are overpriced are ill informed, if second hand values hold up well you can infer it is not over priced. The Samsung Tab Pro S is overpriced, I can buy this on ebay, a month old version for half the price of retail, even at that price I wouldn't recommend it. So yes it is expensive but you do pay for what you get, I sold an eight year old previous generation MacBook Pro for £250 and I bought a new Elitebook 820 with i7, LTE, SSD for the same price. Forget sticker prices there are far more reasons to judge value.

      its better because youre comparing a heavy duty laptop to a college/business only laptop ..
      i have a macbook pro i use it when i go to school its easy to carry and its not heavy even the charger is so small. there are times that i cant even find my macbook pro inside my bag when its mixed with my books altogether.
      i already have a gaming pc . and i rather build a gaming pc instead of buying a gaming laptop .. its heavy and thick

    • @Hekovashi
      @Hekovashi 7 років тому +6

      Um....it's named a PRO, which means it's for proffesionals such as photographers, video editors and such stuff, PRO is NOT for college students. PRO things should be a heavy duty machine, for all of that editing. Long ago MBP was an actually best laptop, with decent specs. But now seems like PRO ends up being a laptop for students and hipsters, and for actual pros there way better solutions (hello surface series).
