  • In this video, the second in our "Is It Worth It?" series, we are going to look at upgrading an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x to the Ryzen 7 5800x3D, widely considered the prior generation king of gaming CPU’s. Our "Is It Worth It?" series is focused on showing you just how much you can expect to increase the performance of your system with a drop-in upgrade. One of the biggest challenges with upgrades is that they can rapidly spiral out of control if you are not careful ... you start with good intentions but rapidly find yourself rebuilding your entire machine ... that has happened to me way too many times to count. So for this series we are going to limit the upgrade to only one component ... no major generational upgrades that would require multiple components to be changed will be allowed.
The system being upgraded today is one of my own personal systems originally built by Falcon Northwest. The system was built with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900x in the system, which is a great prior gen CPU from AMD. One question I see a lot with AM4 based systems is whether you should upgrade to a 5800x3D chip. It's an easy answer coming from a lower end chip but what about a 5900x? In this video we are going to answer the question "Is The 5800X3D Really Worth It?"
As you will see in the video, it's really not rocket science, it's Lego … my goal is to help you make the right component choices and put them together the right way, every time.

My Cinebench score for the 5800X3D displayed in the video is lower than expected so I investigated to find the cause. It turns out that my AIO cooler from Falcon Northwest decided to die during my benchmark testing (never had that happen before). After installing a new AIO and running all of the benchmarks again, the only numbers that changed were the synthetic CPU benchmarks and Microsoft Flight simulator at lower resolutions, that's it. So the good news is the recommendations in the video are all still valid. You can find a PDF of the new benchmarks on my website: blackbirdpc.tech/

Dumb question but is there a game that the 5800x3d can't run over 144hz ? Kinda pointless to upgrade if the speed it will gain can't hit the screen. But then again the 8800 isn't even out yet

    • @jonathanmellette8541

@@news2383 Depends on resolution and GPU, of course. There are certainly games that the 5800x3d can't hit 144hz at 4k. I have a 5800x3d and a 4090 and I pretty much peg 144fps at the highest possible settings for Horizon Forbidden West, but that wasn't the case with the 3090Ti.
Games all are different in terms of whether they're CPU intensive, GPU intensive, or balanced.
But overall I agree with you. The time to upgrade is when your PC doesn't do what you want it to do. For some people, that's hitting 99th percentile in TimeSpy Extreme. For others, it's maxing out their monitors refresh rate.
Also, keep in mind there are a LOT of 240hz monitors out there now, and LC has a 32" OLED 480Hz monitor.

I bought the 5800X3D a few months ago at $300. I had an X570 build with a 3700X processor and an RX 580 GPU. It gave my machine a new life and made upgrading the video card worthwhile. I am feeling pretty good about my machine again. I have an RX 6800 that is bottlenecking my CPU. For $658 I got a major upgrade. The 6800 was $358 and the 5800X3D was $300. It's not all brand new tech but for me it is a brand new machine. I even had to buy a case because the 6800 wouldn't fit my old front bay full tower. Add another $109.
Yep, the money does pile up. As long as I don't have a motherboard failure I am good with what I spent for the performance I got. It's always a gamble and a 4 year old board can go pop at any time.

I do agree that a higher-end card such as a 7900 XTX will place more strain on the CPU, so these type of gains with an X3D chip are indeed possible under those conditions. Totally depends on your use-case, if you play a lot of e-sport games then the switch to 5800X3D makes sense but if your use-case is mostly related to productivity or you just play some triple A games from time to time then probably not. Remember that you are losing 4 cores and 8 threads, I would only consider upgrading if I had a 4080 / 7900 XTX level perf GPU.

Then this weekend I installed a 5800X3D on the old B450 and WOW! What a diffrence, playing PUGB in 2560x1440 and the intel was yielding about 170fps, the 3600x about 140-150 (with bigger drops) but the 5800X3D shot right to 300.

I greatly enjoyed your 7800X-3D video, so I'm back for another in the series. My previous main gaming/production PC was a 3900X/2080Ti build, and I considered just dropping in a Zen3 chip. But which one? Extensive research told me the best bang-for-the-buck AM4 upgrade for my 3900X was -- none. The only truly significant AM4 upgrade from the 3900X is the 5950X, and I could not justify its cost now that AM5 is available. I decided to build a new rig and stick with the 3900X in that PC, relegating it to a secondary role (now with a 6750XT as the 2080Ti has developed what I think is a sensor issue that makes it think it's overheating). My main machine is now a 13700K/7900XTX build, and it is at least 50% faster than the old system in every application.

@@blackbirdpctech They will trade blows, I suspect, with no clear winner. I chose the 7900XTX for its 50% greater VRAM buffer, because I don't play any RT games, and because Nvidia has openly declared, albeit in a way that many people miss, that it does not care about gamers. I already had a 6800XT, more than adequate for my needs, but I promised myself a 7900XTX if I could get one for under $900. That happened, and it's in the machine. The 6800XT is now in a 5700X machine, where it's pretty well balanced.

I almost did just that. I have a quality X570S , 64gb , 6900XT with 5900X. Curious about trying the 5800X3D so I found a cheaper open box for $239. The next day after installing it I was already jumping on board just selling my good hardware and buying new 7800X3D as the entire upgrade would be $250-300. I placed the order and planed to return this open box. But I cancelled my AM5 hardware and decided to just stick with my new openbox 5800X3D. A friend is going to buy my 5900X for the same price but I will do all the labor of bios update and install.
I just undervolted it using curve optimizer. Only wanted to lower it a bit as I can't believe extreme undervolting is good for electronics. It runs better with a ALL CORE NEGATIVE -15.

@@mrswagtastic3276 Honestly it is really hard to tell. Today I thought about swapping back to the 5900x to see if it was noticeable worse.
The problem is I also just updated the bios and updated AMD 6900XT driver.
Their new driver I think was the cause for stuttering as I felt some weird micro stutter.
But as far as more FPS it isn't so obvious for me to notice night and day benefits.
Part of the issue is I am not playing high FPS games that I could easily see the change. My 6900XT at 5120x1440p shooting for 240fps is very much GPU bound. I still play old school BF4 and my FPS really seems about the same and I think it's due to a GPU bottle neck. It jumps around between 150fps - 200fps. The GPU does show full utilization though except for when it hits the 200fps cap of the game.
Really it is hard to say , I almost want to swap back and try my 5900X out again but really why though as the 5800X3D has the 8 core CCX and VCACHE so I can't see how the 5900XT would be better. Clock speeds are similar, the 5900X would boost to 4950mhz but in game the cores were more like 4300-4500mhz same with the 5800X3D which is around 4350-4450mhz.
I did undervolt it but put it back when I saw stuttering as I wanted to rule it out as the cause. I might try my 5900X again but I really think I am not able to see the improvement due to the game, resolution and ULTRA detail being used.
      Hope these random thoughts help.
UPDATE 1/8/24 - Still running this 5800X3D. Prices on he 7800X3D went up $52, motherboards are spendy and ram is still the same in price. What I cancelled would have been the best deal. I likely will not return this 5800X3D as it's better than my 6900XT can perform at 5120x1440 @240hz. If I come across a smoking price on AM5, 7600, MB and RAM I might just sell off this current AM4 hardware but unlikely. 5800X3D should be good for most 200 - 240fps targets once I have a GPU with enough muscle to stay around there. Must resist the urge to upgrade for little reason at the moment.

You really do not have to do a thing depending on if any of your games are dropping under 60fps much or what games you play. If its just solitaire or hearts then keep the 5800 its only 9 percent difference with a 5800x3d. Not really enough to be worth the 300+ dollars.

There is no way to get all 5Ghz cores on a die because it's a silecon lottery, so even a 5800X3D has cores that won't reach 5Ghz :) If you have to budget to buy a decent cpu I would definately go for the 5900X because of the performance in other tasks besides gaming.

Great question. A comparison with a 5800x is not super interesting to me because it has been done many times and the only reason to do it would be to attempt to isolate the impact of the 3D v-cache. The problem is that if the 5800x is a golden sample and the 5800x3D is not, then the results would be very misleading. I had a gaming system with a 5900x in it and I wondered if it would be worth it to install a 5800x3d. That is definitely an option however at this point I would wait to see what the 9000 CPU’s offer and potentially get a new AM5 motherboard that will likely support higher speed ddr5.

Your results are not showing the same CPU scaling as other big name channels with these parts. I am not sure if its a GPU bottleneck or what but, Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed show the 5800X3D absolutely destroying the 5900X in most games. They are using a 4090 and not a 3080ti.

    • @blackbirdpctech
      @blackbirdpctech  25 днів тому +1

Please look at the pinned comment and updated benchmarks. At 1080p there is an average increase of 11% and 1% low increase of 14% across 13 games, which is a significant advantage for the 5800X3D. In games that really leverage the 3D cache, like Microsoft Flight Simulator, the advantage at 1080p is around 46%. I can't talk to the results from other channels because I am not familiar with how they test.

I feel like this is more of a sidegrade, not really an upgrade, you exchanged productivity power for gaming power, both are great CPUs, but each is somewhat better in either productivity or gaming, looking at your own benchmarks, I don't you you got your value out of this upgrade, overall it's the same, so you paid money to buy an extra cpu, to basically just get the same, switched productivity prowess for gaming prowess so I agree with your conclussion.
To someone building a new PC it depends on what they plan to do with it, if they're gonna both game and work on the same machine, then the 5900x, but if the system is purely entertainment and they work at work on a laptop for example, then the 5800x3d all the way, the only downside of going AM4 is that it's a dead-end platform, while from a performance difference between the generations you'd get more value going for AM4, but if you realize that the AM5 platform will keep you going for 3 more generations after the current, you'd be doing yourself a huge favor in terms of support and future upgradability.

I should also do a video on bottlenecks … I’m concerned that they are not well understood. Thanks for your comment.
