    I honestly don't care about tutorials in games because I like to discover things myself, like in old school, but you're right in more complex games it's necessary. Fortunetely I never felt the beginning of SMT IV as a tutorial. It felt so natural to me. Excellent video. Glad this outstanding game it's finally getting the attention it deserves. Thanks so much

    Nice one, man!
    Tutorial needs to be kinda free. Like you’ll learn while you play the way you want. It’s just boring when a game keeps stopping you every time with a message “oooh, you can do that”, or “did you noticed that red balangodango? Yeah, it means it’s a special hit”. Come on! There was a freaking big red animation, I’ve noticed that it was a critical or elemental hit.
    Megaman tutorial FTW!

    Thanks for doing this, a lot of people criticized SMT4's intro but I thought the game gives you the tools you need to get through and I feel like the intro is really underrated. In fact, SMT4's difficulty is SMT4a's War difficulty - that's right, the developers were so scared that they put in 2 lower difficulties in the sequel. The great thing about SMT4 is that the tutorial is so great and teaches you the fundamentals so well, that you can play the other SMT games no problem though you'll need to learn the quirks of the other games as well. I hope your channel blows up, you deserve more views and subs. Can't wait for SMT5.

    I've often heard games like the original legend of zelda praised because of their lack of tutorial. I think a big problem is simply the complexity of a controller. On an NES controller you have a d-pad and 2 buttons. They don't interact. In a modern controller or especially on PC, there's simply too many commands available that you can't just learn by experimenting. One game I think did tutorials extremely well though is the modern iteration of the Hitman series. Take you through a mission with an easy solution, then put a bunch of goals and say "ok, you try the more complex stuff now" and they just let you leave when you want. I think that fits a great mix of giving enough information, enough time to process it, and allowing experienced players to just skip it. That might all just be a coincidence though, as that's how the game's normal gameplay loop works too.

    Happened across this video in my recommended feed. Having watched it, I don't necessarily agree with everything you're saying. Vanilla SMT4 has one glaring problem that prevents it from being a gold standard for video game tutorials - its difficulty, on the whole, is wildly inconsistent. I generally don't like to go on MauLer-style spiels about video game difficulty because it's highly subjective. With that said, vanilla SMT4 has so many quirks that make it swing from "the Dark Souls of Persona" to "Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland" and vice-versa.
    It's universally accepted that SMT4's early-game (as in everything up to and including Medusa) is significantly tougher to deal with than the rest of the game. Early on, your XP gains are *extremely* limited in that you only receive XP in the double digits for most kills. Macca is also heavily limited in the early-game, which is quite punishing if you're like me and you get unlucky multiple times during demon recruitment. To top it all off, the player can actively hinder *or* help themselves in their stat allocation choices and app selection. Agility in SMT4 is a veritable monkeywrench of a stat that determines critical aspects of combat like attack accuracy, evasion, and turn order.
    Contrast this to Strength, which is again, universally regarded as the worst stat in the entire game due to it being completely outclassed by Dexterity in terms of the return on investment. Strength only increases your auto-attack damage, but Dexterity increases the damage of physical *and* gun skills, giving you two damage types for the price of one! Any player who wishes to experiment rather than specialise right off the bat will immediately be punished, should they invest into Strength due to its poor balancing. I eventually reset my first save on SMT4 (a Strength/Agility/Luck build) and focused primarily on Magic and Agility during my second run through the game. The experience against Minotaur was like night and day. My demon lineup wasn't that different either, except for replacing Pele with Fortuna. Once you make it into Tokyo, the game's difficulty goes down rapidly. Encounters now award XP within the hundreds to even thousands, there's a *lot* more relics and sidequests to be found for Macca, and you have more demons to recruit, which inevitably means more demons to fuse, which in turn means more skill diversity.
    I want to make one thing clear: I adore Shin Megami Tensei IV and believe it brought a lot of great things to the table as a MegaTen game, and as a video game in general. With that said, calling the utter hell that is the early game a good tutorial seems a bit much for me to take in.

    I feel like one thing people who advocate for more involved tutorials is: the first thing everyone does when starting a new game is press every button and experiment. If you have Play Coins SMT 4 makes it really obvious dying has very little consequence. So you can just go wild experimenting.

    This is why I prefer Megaten over the poke'mon rpgs. We all understand that poke'mon is aimed for kids but Poke'mon is the no.1 biggest franchise of all time and they know that adults n hardcore rpg nerds play these games... yet they don't give the option for a hard mode and remove the handholding if selected hard mode. They're too boring, and easy to get through. So I have to go with Megaten and even persona. Tho as flashy n more character depth persona is. I prefer the more miserable megaten by alot more. It doesn't hold my hand, it doesn't treat players like idiots, it's not afraid to beat you indiscriminately, it doesn't care if you wanna take a break... I love it.

  • @Alpha-kt4yl
    @Alpha-kt4yl 3 роки тому +4

    Why am I watching this even though I haven't beat the minotaur yet. God this game is soo difficult. Of course the difficulty helps both the story and gameplay through selling how unforgiving the world is and through pushing the player into all of it's systems to get every edge they can get. But damn does the difficulty wear me out. As someone who hasn't beaten the Minotaur, my only complaint is that there is no fair way to beat the game deathless on your first run. Like, there's no way to get information on demons, especially bosses, beforehand so that you can prepare for it. You have to die( and die over again depending on your skill) in order to get the information you need to prepare for the boss. Still, regardless of how brutal tiring this game is, I hope to see it through to the end.

    • @SlightlyInDepthGaming
      @SlightlyInDepthGaming  3 роки тому +3

      That is very true a lot of the bosses in the game have to be fought before you can actually plan for them although saving right before hand can alleviate this problem.

    3. Naraku isn't an interesting location
    4. It's the hardest part of the game, which means that these boring 5-10 hours of running from your bed to dungeon and back(because oneshots) are they only hours you don't use auto-battle and right after Medusa you just play on auto-battle for the next 70 hours.
