Let's Rank All the Shin Megami Tensei IV Guest Demons!

- After Kaneko stopped designing demons but before Doi started, Shin Megami Tensei IV put us in a unique place where tokusatsu designers and horror directors were bringing their own demon designs to the franchise. Now it's my job to go through all of them and give them a letter grade based on how I happened to feel about them while I was recording!

#ShinMegamiTenseiIV #SMTIV #SMT4 - Ігри
Lucifer's second form is elevated when you realsie WHY his 'arm tumour' turned into the baby thing: that 'baby thing' is the remnants of the human whose body is acting as his host, and you can tell that because its wearing said host's scarf. Basically, the character has been lowered into just a part of Lucifer as consequence of merging with him.
Going by IV Apocalypse, Walter still existed inside Lucifer to some extent, so maybe the baby tumor thing actually has Walter's consciousness.
The worst part abt SMT IV's demons being designed by guest artists is that they don't return in future entries (aside from the Doi touched up ones like Lucifer & Medusa) Koga Saburo getting added to DX2 does give me a bit of hope we'll see designs like Astaroth, Minotaur & Lillith in later entries tho
An interesting idea: rankings demons multiple designs again each other ex: smt 1 nekomata vs smt 3 nekomata vs devil summoner nekomata
Ah yes, the furry 1 vs the furry 2 vs the cat girl
Might as well even things out and include the megami tensei design.
The fact that when you get Masakado in the form of his head, that is a reference to that after a betrayal and his head being decapitated and placed on a post, it stayed fresh and got more pissed off by the day, which one day it floated away and became a LITERAL force of nature and disease.
I like to thing about how someone just stole the head and people though he became a god
Minotaur in SMTIV has one of the best designs and his striking appearance only makes his painful fight even more memorable. I actually got lucky and did not have much of a problem with him, but his design is immediately identifiable.
I remember not having too much of an issue with him. It was years later I learned the difficulty of that fight was basically a meme. Maybe I just got lucky 'cause I know I didn't win through skill XD
@@strain42 To be fair, I think I got Jonathan for the fight with him; I think anybody who gets bad RNG and gets Walter is in for a bad time.
love the little detail that the bicep has a darker coloration in order to look like a bull's hoof
@@strain42this may be an issue with experience
When i first played smt 4 i had a really hard time with minotaur but now that i played more games i dont really find them hard
I beated devil survivor without griding and without finding too difficult with a phys build on top of that
3 things the game is kinda notorious for but that was after playing every mainline but smt 1 so at this point i do know how to play an smt game
Medusa looks like what a new Persona party member's depiction of Medusa would be like rather than a regular Medusa design. It looks weirdly modern and over the top haha
That just that Artists Design aka lots of Skulls and Punk like stuff and most his Human Faced characters have faces like that.
I love that Yamato Takeru is just wearing Kamen Rider W’s belt.
Oh yes the raidou comic! I would still love to hear you talk about it, what you planned for the plot, possible designs and stuff. I really liked that one and reread it multiple times.
I don't remember if I did it on Twitter or Facebook or wherever, but I did once write out where the story was gonna go. Basically Johei's 6 demons were supposed to represent one of the seven deadly sins and it was gonna end with a big tournament against Raidou the 18th and his gang of humans who had all fused themselves with demons.
@@strain42 I can definitely see that. (Sloth and Lust seem obvious^^) with a pretty massive battle at the end. I think I'll hunt down that tweet. Thanks for answering that question that had not much to do with the video. It was really a treat seeing you also made videos aside from the comics and it still is every time you upload. Thanks Strain.
This is really cool, Strain! I've found it hard to find actual lists of who did what demon in this game, so I appreciate your work getting this together
I also enjoy your takes! Love all your SMT (and Hamtaro) videos
Lucifer having Walter as literally the left hand of the devil was cool not gonna lie
It is a pleasure to see another ranking video from you, and it is with my favorite of the mainline series. The guest demon designs are peaks and valleys for me. There are the archangel designs and Minotaur, which I adore, and then there is Sanat.
I can't wait for the Apocalypse video. Some really great designs there
Good video, my dude! Always had a soft spot for the guest-drawn demon in this game. xD
I love SMT V but I hope they continue the story of SMT 4 and 4 Apocalypse because those games were Both masterpiece for me.
I’m glad you liked them most people would disagree but don’t let that discourage you
Nice video! I liked hearing opinions on these demons that didn’t focus so hard on like historical accuracy and bash on them for not being near identical to historical depictions. Are you gonna include Doi’s redesigns of some of the IV demons for Apocalypse? I liked a lot of the makeovers he did to them, especially Lucifer and Medusa
Call me weird but I absolutely adore Lucifer's design in this game. Especially his base design. He looks utterly terrifying and makes for an unnerving pressence to have around you. I think him having the arm bulge leaves you anxious about what the hell is going on inside that thing and it makes for the strongest reveal in his second form.
I thought i was the only one, i love it, he's so unnerving
To be fair, if you listen to the legend of masakado, it does sound like he's trying very hard to be cool and ends up being cool.
Usually watching your game reviews and demonic compendiums, it feels nice and fresh seeing something less scripted than usual
I usually write down some notes to keep me on track ‘cause otherwise I tend to go on tangents, but yeah, much less scripting was involved in this episode. I wasn’t sure how people would feel about that
@@strain42 I personally really like it.
Can someone tell me the na.e if this anime I can understand him. 16:24
Wow, you watched ToQger?
I like trains
…plus they had Wagon
Did shinohara work on shinkenger? Whenever i see Minotaur or koga saburo i always think of the gedoshu
Something I just noticed about astaroth's design while watching this is that his legs are supposed to invoke a snake's forked tongue.
it a little strange when mentioning Keita Amemiya you didnt mention GARO which has horror ( demons for the series that have) that are also tied to mythology which is interesting to say the least when he made demons for this series. also because the series need more love. Also also these guys are straight from Garo
Seriously Merkabah looks like a Messiah tier horror only lawful evil instead of Chaotic evil.
@@OnDavidsBrain heck it unleashed form looks like a monster from the toegun flute movie
I LOOOOOOVED the new archangels,I HAAAAAATED Lilith but my favorite design was probably Merkabah's first version
...Cleopatra was an apocalypse demon,right?
Lilith is a bit too much for me, but overall she is one of-if not my favourite demon in MegaTen.
Granted, some of that is bias from working my ass off to try and get Lilith in my first playthrough, and then having her as my best magic nuke for the endgame.
The designs in SMT IV are really a mix bag for me...
for the longest time i thought centaur was Bicorn in my playthrough
If they ever bring him back, they should rename him that way.
As a constant player of FF14 I often jokingly called the boss Rofocale Murkaba's Cousin. Because I could.
I want these in 3D smt 6 or persona 6 or soul hackers 2 gimme
Sanat is chaos incarnate so it works given his ailment imo
Masakado Is one of my favorite.
Megaten designs are like action figures you'll always see a repaint of one of them
id get the medusa one as a tattoo... idk if that's a compliment or an insult lmao
unpopular opinion: Sanat looks great without the mythological context
I love Yaso Magatsuhi. I love how the way its sprite is done just doesn't fit. It's vaguely 3D compared to all the 2D art. My fave is Minotaur though, and my least fave Medusa.
Because he's a practical effects artist, all of Nishimura's demons were actually designed by him making physical models of them, which were then adapted into sprites, so that's a big part of why his demons have that particular feel to them. Actually, the photo I used for the Pluto Soldier actually was one of his models since I couldn't find any decent photos of the in-game sprite lol
@Happy thoughts If it was in a game where the other designs matched it, I wouldn't care. :p
Minotaur is pretty much hands down the best design in SMT 4
3:16
"Come, Samurai. Cum!"
Smt 4 demon desgin feel like they should be a different series. Like there something about mixed with the human characters feel weird.
Yeah, the clashing art style always makes it seem a bit out of place. If all the guest demons had still been designed by their respective creators, but then redrawn by Doi or Kaneko I don't think they'd be quite as polarizing as many of them are.
Thankful smt 4 apocalypse does do that.
medusa is SSS
Minotaur is the BEST One. The worst is Centaur, Lucifer, 4 Archangel, Lilith and Sanat. At least Doi fix Lucifer, Merkabah, Lucifer, Centaur, Napaea and Tenkai make them more appealing
Sanat feels like they told him that he’s gonna be a super strong chaos demon. And then he just overemphasized the “disorder” component of chaos.
I like Lucifer's design alright, but that is NOT Lucifer. idk why they used that design for that character. In a vacuum it's fine, but why the fuck was it used for Lucifer, who has two perfect designs already
IV Archangel designs > the “original” Archangel designs.
I still think SMTIV has a miles better story than SMTV.
Story aside, the demon designs didn’t really stand out to me, from what I can recall.
IV is my personal favorite as far as characters and story goes.
@@strain42 IV Apocalypse has probably the hypest final boss (massacre route especially) but the rest of the story has its issues.
@@Ubersupersloth And the hypest final boss themes
i don't dislike lucifer/merkabah's design but i despise the art, i find them ugly
i largely prefer Doi's take on them in 4A
Shin megami tensei: kamen rider
S: Yaso Magatsuhi
F: the rest
Have played through like 15% of Smt IV in the past but honestly most of these designs are overdesigned ugly and confusing dogshit. Keep it simple stupid. Although Minotaur is literally the best take on its concept I've ever seen so yeah.
