Veglie,The religious complex of the minor friars , convento francescano Veglie

In ancient times north of Veglie, within that vast area which currently includes the convent, the crypt, the church and the ancient cemetery, there was a small church dedicated to Santa Maria di Veglie; inside there was a single altar with the fresco of a Madonna with Child, found and extracted from a cave nearby and which the people and clergy of Veglie had assumed as protector of the town.
The Franciscan convent of Veglie was founded in 1579 and built on this pre-existing 14th century building.
