Social media is making me exhausted to think about lately. When it first started it was about sharing your happy and proudest moments, including your best photos as a photographer. Now companies are pushing towards self promotion or the pursuit of followers for their own promotions. I feel alienated from the original hearty experience.
It's fun to see my posts in your video! Thanks for sharing this, Jonny. I like where Foto is headed and can't wait to see where Michael takes it. Thanks for doing what you do!
They should add full screen mode option to the photos and swipe with some cool animation. Like a portfolio presentation. It will look dope on the desktop. Only problem would be 'stealing'. If somehow they can lock screen grab, that will work, not 100%. But we will take it.
I've been saying for a while that instagram's era is over, it's the new facebook, and creators need a new place to interact and grow, especially photographers. This app looks exactly like what I had in mind, I can't wait
The beautiful thing of instagram in the early days was that you as a photographer could reach normal people with your work. Not photographers. A App only for photogs is just useless for me.
I think that's a very fair statement and totally get what you mean, in it's defence I think it's intended as an app for photos rather than just photographers but I get it.
We want Foto to be for everyone who wants to share photos online. Photographers are naturally the early adopters right now, but we don't want to create a photographer silo. Photography is too democratic and accessible to make it that narrow.
Interesting. As an amateur photographer and artist, I was definitely thinking about how I would want to post photos of both my stills and photos of my paintings. Both get lost on Insta. I pretty much never watch reels. I miss the old days when it was just photos.
Will keep an eye on this, thank you! What really annoyes me on IG is the lack of interactions in the feed, even the photo description will be cut after a couple of words. Everything is buld up for quick scroll and consume. I hope the developer will think about making a photography social media, based on photography and social interaction, instead of a photography social media based on just scrolling and quick consume.
Please ask them to add an option to view photos cleanly, full screen, and also the ability to rotate the phone to view landscape photos. A couple of obvious features that Instagram lacks.
This app looks pretty cool for photos, finally a good one. What about the censored policy. Will we able to post artistic nude on it for example without being stricked like on Instagram?
I wonder if there will be also a hype of Foto-influencer-contentcreators will hit like a short wave and then nobody talks about it. It felt that way with vero.... But the developer seems like he put quite some though in his Fotos app :)
I absolutely love the idea of being able to utilize metadata in photos. I would love to search a specific camera or a lens. Even a focal length would be powerful. The only issue I find with these photography centric apps is they don’t attract non photographers so they become an echo chamber for photographers And hobbyists. Give me an app that acts as a portfolio but allow likes and let me use my account to send links to folders of photos for clients and friends
It's not public yet. We will open back up for people interested in joining Private Beta in 3-4 weeks. We have to add some social features first and squash a few bugs.
I like that no one can see your followers and who you follow. Instagram has so many fake accounts. I have to keep my account private. There's a lot of scammers that will contact you after you add them. If you have them following you they can then go through your followers and add them. I hate that. Hiding that information should stop that from happening.
Hey Marco! We will be opening back up for people interested in joining Private Beta in 3-4 weeks. We got to add some social features first and squash a few bugs.
Foto will always have a free tier. We are asking for a small one-time donation for anyone who wants to be in the Private Beta group and be there from the beginning, but we know that's not for everyone. When we launch it publicly, you can use it for free.
Personally, I'm already overwhelmed with too many platforms. Maybe it's because I was a full blown adult when the first social media platforms launched.
@@riiseeeI happily pay for services (UA-cam) to avoid shitty adverts that are irrelevant. As for paying for a beta we've already seen similar withing the gaming industry.
'if there's an app, an ecosystem like this, where they strip away all that is about influensing, follows and likes, where anyone that would like to post a photo, and not just what their lunch looks like: I would quit instagram. The lack of actual social integration now, and posting photos the way they are, to everyone and anybody, is huge. Everybody want to be tix-tox, and still not loose consumers of the original some apps. that can't be done. the fast-consume needs to be dropped.
It's great to see other photo-sharing apps popping up like Grainery and now Foto. Our team in fact built one as well, though it's specific to street photography (we call it PortraitMode). Building a platform like this comes with lots of challenges but it's an exciting journey. Definitely keeping an eye on this. I can see how this appeals to a wide audience if done correctly. I sometimes feel it's tough for us going so niche - but it's ultimately also a bit easier to market, especially as a small team as we are. Kudos to Michael and his team! 🙌
I just downloaded and joined. What is your business model if it is always free? I am a paid user of Flickr, and don’t mind it. There is nothing wrong with paying for a good platform. Handle is TCPurvis.
ahhh finally breaking free from instagram is soo nice. I`ve been looking for somewhere my pictures can "breathe" and insta just feels claustrophobic? Anyway I just downloaded your app and I cannot wait to try it. :D So far, I like the layout of it! :)
I like the idea. What I would like to know is, what exactly is the advantage photographers will get from Foto? Keeping up with all the socials means photographers have to put alot of work into marketing that does not have clear advantages at times. I'd like to see a social app that introduces image purchasing directly into the app. The app creators could take a cut of sales while still sticking to the chronological ordering. Maybe it could integrate print purchasing with it too. Just an idea that would certainly get my attention
As I mentioned in one of your previous videos, I am working on a photo-sharing app as well. It's taking a while 😅 I am launching it this autumn. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to talk about it. I would love to know your feedback 😉
Apart from seeing pictures in the ratio that they are posted in, I can't see enough, strong points of difference to make this a great success. I really wish the developer luck though. Instagram needs competition.
as a beginner with not a lot of social following, using Instagram has been hell. the app has become a marketplace and it doesn't really help small creators get noticed, let alone get interactions. that's my biggest hope for apps like these
Don't see any major differences from Instagram. Even the hidden likes has been done by IG in several countries. The meta data is nice, but I don't think the average person will care or even understand what it is.
I was waiting to hear if there would be a desktop version. The IG desktop platform isn't the greatest. It feels like they don't really care much about it. Good luck to the developers!
I only post to Twitter currently and soon that will change when they make everyone pay to use. I cannot justify paying to share photos I am not making money from. For me, if you want my money, then you have to provide an easy way for customers to purchase them. I don’t care if it is digital download or framed. Secondly, I saw nothing about image protections. I don’t want people to be able to just click and download my WORK. None of my photos are straight out of the camera. I spend at least an hour on every single RAW photo I develop. I want to give people the best they can buy for the money. If none of these features are implemented, then I am most definitely out.
I liked VERO but it doesn't work on my phone. So at the end its just more flashy graphics and less photos. I hope that Foto brings that silence and quietness back to social media. Video and sound everywhere gets boring fast.
@@MichaelHowardFoto thank you so much for this answer, can't wait to be able to join an open beta and have access to a social network that really is centered around photography in all honesty and clarity. Photography must be the center.
Its exciting to see that there is a photography for photographers app in development. I just wonder how well its going to do against Vero. Personally id love a space for photographers where you can get feedback on your work and grow (in your skill, not followers). Similar to what Flickr was like 15 years ago.
I agree that I think this apps target audience is already quite well served by Vero and that was actually my first question on threads a few weeks back.
Hi Iain! Thanks for checking us out. Our vision at Foto is to create a space for everyone who wants to share photos online. The hope we have over time is that our deep commitment to photography and images will differentiate us from a place like Vero which is taking a more multi-media approach to their social platform.
