It's the first time I had a such a deep analysis of Putin's economic strategy. Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)

I see that the HR strengthening solution offered by increasing the state debt is indeed good for the long term. as part of the European Union since the WW era. It seems that Putin knows that if foreign investment is suddenly withdrawn due to a sensitive issue about Russia and causes riots in his people, of course that is a high price. see how outside companies withdrew from russia after russian operations to ukraine

Happy to find your very correct use of the terms: Liberal and conservative. We are tired of swallowing the ignorant and distorted American use of the terms. Liberalism: maximal individual rights over "collective" aspirations; minimal decentralised state (government); empire of Law; Liberal Democracy. As for conservative you can figure out anything.
Depends on social policy. Social Liberal invests in the poor and warps the economy and pushes the poor in to the middle class. Classical Liberal is where buisness rules and future strategic planes are ignored.
@@panzerofthelake506 this comment is very biased and idealistic and ignores the reality of things. How do they "push poor people into the middle class" ? By increasing welfare payments thus making poverty more comfortable while attracting even more welfare recipients via Induced Demand? Such policies are consistently linked to higher poverty (you can simply look at differences within the USA of states that implement such policies). How are they "pushed" into the middle class explain the exact mechanism?
Another great vid! Somewhat unrelated, but I wanted to point out how your North Korean analysis video from FOUR years ago (which I first watched a few days before the big announcement) was absolutely spot on. keep up the great work!
It does as long as there are reserves to use up (both financial and human). When the reserves dry up the whole thing collapses. But I guess their plan is "lets leave this problem for the future generations"
it works. There r many new opening factories, farms and other stuff, Russia is getting lots of investitions because of weak rubble it became easier for making business here
Despite Putin's own promises in 2000, when he became president, the retirement age was lifted to 65(male) and 60(female) the very same year this video was uploaded (2018). It may seem quite OK if you compare it retirement age in other European countries, but the problem is that average life expectancy in Russia is just 67.51 for men and 77.64 for women (data from 2019). Now you see the cruelty of this reform. If you bear in mind that the government is determined to avoid social unrest due to economic instability, this retirement reform means that Russia already has no money.
I have watched a few episodes from the Caspian report. The breadth of your topics is stunning and seems to come with a real understanding for the local issues
Great insight, especially the narrative on the Russian Military industrial Complex and how it drives public policy. It's talked about a lot by the Americans, but most people don't realize these MIC companies are in most countries. Russia, China, all of NATO, Iran and Israel etc. Making weapons is big money.
Cane Blu--You are a moron. Italy is not "under control of zionist banks." You hate Jews first, then try to wrap the world around that. Think like an adult, not a child.
Cane Blu--You have at least been honest enough to say you hate Jews. Now, you need to reflect on that statement. Do you think it is something an intelligent, thinking human being should do (that is, clump people into a group and then make judgements on all of them with no further information on any individual)?
I hear the analysis on this channel, and am reminded of an Einstein quote "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking that we used when we created them"
Honestly, do Russians living in Russia honestly fucking believe US$1 Trillion lost is worth Crimea? That is how much they lost post-sanctions and post-oil crisis. That little province is already nearing USA involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq levels of spending (US$4 Trillion).
Kudrin's reforms will lead nowhere, as they rely on foreign investments. There will be no significant investments, because they're too high risk for a typical Western investor. Titov's plan sounds like what most Russians would prefer.
Jao Jao Not nearly enough as needed. The only ones that come are for short term gain. Most investments are required for infrastructure - roads, bridges, railroads, etc. But they don't bring fast returns.
Vadim Kharichkov putin said that the investment on roads and ports connecting EU to asia will increase, making russia a passage corridor from europe to asia
Actually china growth started with massive investment from foreign company and labour force liberal reform into special area. Which look like more to kudrin's plan.
The difference between the US printing more money and taking on more debt and Russia printing more money and taking on more debt is simple - all the oil in the world is traded in dollars. So he dollar has a secure underpinning no matter how much the US debt grows, the ruble does not. With the sanctions and permanently low oil prices around $60, Russia is squeezed tight, the problem is not how to distribute money, it's that there isn't much to distribute.
Yep. No matter what Putin does, he is going to be hated and blamed for the people's suffering, even though it's Yeltsin's fault Russia has nothing else and is therefore so reliant on oil. I kinda feel sorry for him
Andras Libal Russia and china already proposed to change the petro-dollar and Russia state budget had a 50% dependency on oil/gas in 2015 while in 2017 it was 39% and in 2020 it will be 33%
Allright, where is the revenue coming from then? Russia is not good at making high quality or high tech products so what they can sell is raw materials + weapons. As I don't see why weapons sales would grow, how exactly is the money coming in? I mean anyone can propose percentages but if you don't have an alternative source of income it remains a proposal.
Andras Libal they have a growing industrial sector+ some of kudrins reforms could attract medium-size foreign enterprises to Russia, also they are now the biggest wheat producer in the world
If it had been a functioning democracy, Kudrin and Titov would have had two different political parties and would vie for people's mandate, instead of fighting for the approval of the strongman. A bit unfortunate.
There are many parties in Russia but United Russia is seen as the most stable middle ground choice. There ARE other parties with more liberal (or other different) platforms.
@Hamid Hussein I don't understand your point, that if Russia will become a truly democratic society it would collapse? Why hasn't France collapsed? Why hasn't Germany collapsed? Your argument makes no sense. How could possibly a country like Russia, be governed by foreign powers? That's just pure nonsense, made up by Putin and his fans to say "If Putin leaves there will be chaos". Also if you think that there are only 2 political parties in the US you are wrong. And if you claim that the US is governed by some "secret forces" then please be so kind and prove it.
Shirvan, you should consider doing a follow up to this video. I personally would love to see a video that deals with Putinomics and the current China-Russia relationship as well as one that deals with Putinomics and how it might be impacted by a possible Russian reentry into the G7. That with Petro yuan will only strengthen them because China is the biggest importer of oil. China and Russia already agreed to terms to increase its oil exchange and economic cooperation. Strengthening both.

@@Daniel-rh7kh"Liberalization" worked for Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia etc, where the salaries are higher than in Russia..., Russia did not try it correctly and Russia expected to get rich immediately. GDP growth has very little to do with a higher living standart for the common people as seen in the last decades in the west where in fact livings standarts fell for most even during times of better growth rates. GDP growth is not a valid measurement for the average prosperity. That the Kremlin has a policy that favours stability and security is comprehensible and rational. Oh,and btw the military budget also was cut back and is now lower than that of Saudi Arabia for example.
However you cant have a low gdp and have a high standard of living. GDP represents the health of the economy, basically what a country produces. Policies, culture, and etc dictate who benefit from those gains.

It is best to show occupied territory, at least show it as a separate color or the best is to show it as a hatched area. Regardless of the legality of the occupation, the Russians have control of the area and not the Ukraine. I mean, the invasion of Tibet was _technically_ illegal and pretty evil, but we still show Tibet as part of China on maps and such.
This is the sort of "Juniors first economic analysis" one can expect of someone that just picked up The Economist for the first time. Completely omits the fact that the defense budget shrank in favor of domestic infrastructure and social spending, tries to paint financial reserves as depleted when they are some of the healthiest in the western world, paints removal of failing governors as corruption instead of accountability. Anyone watching this is going to end up the opposite of informed. For something resembling a fair-minded analysis of Russia see here: www.thenation.com/authors/stephen-f-cohen/
Fantastic video. Summed it up perfectly at the end. Russia will lag behind the world in development unless there is significant overhaul of the structure. When political power and control is placed over economic growth investment is stifled. Oligarchs obviously won't give up their power and the low growth cycle will continue.
Wow this is so well done! However I think its entirely wrong to equate the Russian military complex with the American military complex in their status in their respective nations economy.
I think they need to start giving out Paradox games in politics and history classes. I've learned more about geography and politics from just Paradox games then i did through 14 years of public school and 2 years of technical school.

You do realize that Russian capital reserves currently stand at over 400 billion dollars right? And during the recession, they never went below 300 million dollars. How is this nearly depleted?
Not only is that money depleted, but the state actually does not have money in reserves, which is why Russians have seen a large number of taxes implemented, all taking money from a consumer in attempts to balance the books and allow the regime to survive.
Actually investment into healthcare and education is now a total of 2% of expenditures, and has been decreasing for the past 4 years, and decreasing not in % of expenditures, but in amount of $. I recently visited Russia, staying there for 4 months, having a chat with many locals, which all say how they have a lot less money on their hands, all due to the government implementing taxes etc.. I cannot give you proof readily. Putin's government is reliant on money to pump to keep the officials loyal to him. That is what i mean by survive.
He covered some of that in one of his political videos on south Africa or Africa as a whole, but I'd love to hear more about the land seizures and the government sanctioned persecution of white farmers. It's kind of depressing how the world seems to just kind of ignore the borderline genocide going on down there, just because its happening to white people. Afrikaners tried applying to the UN to be a protected minority (or a minority in danger, or something like that) and the UN turned down their petition. I heard that in the 90's South Africa was around a third white, now whites make up about 8% of the population, they felt so threatened that most of them fled the country leaving behind mostly (financially) poor white farmers. The Apartheid was perpetrated by mostly upper class elites, but the farmers were what built south africa from a tribal society to the greatest country in Africa.
Russia should work on IT sector. It was theirs for the taking with the math and informatics culture they have. Yet India is doing so much better. They should at least partner with us (India).
Why because they dont praise your dear leader putin or spread happy happy news all over the place. In the US we constantly question our leaders, this isnt the case in Russia. Go to any state run new agency and see if you can find anything negative about putin....lol. There is none, so glad im not a russian. They are doomed
the strategy of not growing or changing much in good times in order to also not suffer as much in the bad is as old as russia itself. this is a vast simplification of it of course.
Something Russia needs to learn, what a lot of other countries (not even only western) already know: if your people are living good lives, your government, economy, country, etc. will live a good life. Ofcourse this is a very broad statement, but in overall it applies.
Russia has one big problem, the climate. The government has to make sure that the people in Siberia have enough food, heat and fuel during the winter months. The logistics to accomplish this goal before winter sets in are daunting. China has a similar problem; although China's climate is not as severe as Russia's climate. China's looming problem is that climate change has brought drought in the mountains that supply China's rivers with water.
Wrong if you have a good life you will get a self respect and will demand more from the gvt . Just look at election results in Moscow , saint p. and the poor cities and countryside. Poor people support Putin much more. Poor man thinks about getting his family fed so he has no time to protest. So if you just concerned about staying in power people well being is not that important and even bad. It's cheaper to brainwash them then raising their living standards.
Valid points indeed, although I think the problem lies somewhere else: the government is to scared to be undermined in any way. I think it is actually possible for the overall Russian to have better living standards IF political will shifted towards more private matters. Sure peeps in bigger cities in the west of the country have a pretty decent live. But I feel like the large scale of the country is more of a burden than a blessing. But eh, this is just my simple opinion from a simple dutchman. I'm no Russia expert in any way. And please, dont mistake my words for arrogance instead of curiosity ^^
Яков Финкельштейн Hm, if I can compare your statement to my country, The Netherlands: we have a pretty high standard of living and yes, we do demand ALOT from our government. We also protest. But all this does not undermine our country in any way. People have a feeling they have a say in things and you know what, sometimes it does work and political will shifts. I understand the political climate is totaly different over there. But wouldnt you want to be able to say what you want and actually get it sometimes?
There's a lot more risk involved then the government cannot bail you out of trouble, therefore no incentive to steal exists then you have the competitors, laws and regulations biting your behind.
Russian is in deep debit, they've maxed out their debit card and they've been trying to pay it off with the credit line. Pretty soon they'll have to try and explain things to the bank or try pay day loans.
Correct, although for a long time is was spelled without a "b". But just to be fancy a lot of English words got mistakenly respelled to resemble similar Latin words, even though there wasn't a historical connection. So the silent "b" in debt come from an attempt to mimic the latin word "debitum".
1% growth is not little growth when seen on the long run. That's the power of the compounding effect. If you grow at that rate for 30 years you'll have a +35% growth in total that can change a lot in your economy's structure.
Over that same 30 years, the 2% growth from all the NATO countries will cause 100% growth. So the rich will become even more dominant over middle class Russia. Over those same 30 years 5% growth from developing countries like Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil and etc will cause their economy to be bigger than Russia
Neoliberal solutions are always assumed to be "sensible," even though their effects on the ordinary people in the given country are never sensible or acceptable.
In terms of macro economy Putin did what had to be done. Stabilized the sh...it out of it. However, in terms of microeconomy and long term - well, country of 140 mln people won't survive long or on good level as outdated arms pedler and gas station. They have to liberalise at least internal market and allow average uhg...Ivans and Tanias to get richer.
Jon Sei Lim i dont thing dere is any comparison b/w modi n putin.....putin isnt idoit.......modi crippled our economy which was going 7-8% growth by imposing demonatization nd GST to 3-5%
In my opinion, they could combine both Plans but in a Smart way. Instead of cutting Defence Spending, like the Kudrin Camp suggested. 1. They could borrow money and Invest in Education and Health-care. 2. Fully liberalize the Non-Strategic sectors, (Strategic Sectors are Energy, Mining and Defence, and State-Owned companies) 3. Borrow and Spend in other Sectors, Like Industry, Manufacturing and Mining. 4. Encourage foreign investment in the Non-Strategic Sectors.
Borrowing money for spending on education and healthcare is risky. Cutting defence is necessary for now at least. If they cut defence by let's say 20% over 2 years, they could then gradually increase it by some fixed % of government revenue growth each year, making certain that defence grows with the economy instead of ahead of it.
Smart nations will use the profits from their vast natural resources to invest in education and growing industry. The US used its vast timber, oil, and coal fields to invest in massive industrialization. The UK did the same with Coal and Tin. The Nordic Countries use their oil to grow their knowledge capital. Stupid nations spend the money on useless projects, pointless wars, or corruption. Romania used to have some of the largest oil deposits in Europe and they blew most of it on massive infrastructure and building projects that had no practical use and eventually went bankrupt. It looks like Russia is making the same mistake. They have natural resources that match if not exceed what the US had, but they blew alot of it during the cold war, spent most of it on corruption during the 90's and 00's, and now it looks like they'll spend the rest on pointless wars and they'll lose the rest to sanctions.
Loved this video. Very thoughtful. It shows Putin is not all powerful, but he is in good shape. IMHO, the idea of unleashing non-productive loans for temporary stimulation is right out of the Maduro school of economics. But Putin is smarter than Maduro, and will likely do exactly as the video says: a little bit of this, a little bit of that. Keeps everyone slightly happy.
Great video! Suggestions for future videos :Brazil 2018 election, European military, Mexican cartels, Taliban political integration, EU & Russia cooperation possibility? and World Cup potential winners...
Foreign investment is selling country's interest. State industry development is best for people and country. Investment in education is long term bet. Wish Russia best.
Try looking up the "Wimbledon Effect". Some countries thrive even if large portions of their major businesses are foreign owned. Hong Kong used to be dominated by foreign owned companies and it did well, and depending on whether or not you consider China to be foreign, it's still dominated by foreign companies. From the 1800's until the 70's and 80's many countries economies were dominated by European companies and still did relatively well. After WW2 Germany only had a few native owned businesses, and many of those were at least partially owned by Allied investors. After the end of colonialism in Africa most of the countries fell apart, but many of them are starting to grow thanks to heavy foreign investment, often from their former overlords. In some areas France, England, and Portugal contribute more investment than native or state investors.
Investment in education is indeed a long term bet. And China has made a huge bet in this fashion. Russia still seems to be worried about the US. I wonder why. The US has done its worst to Russia, yet Russia is keeping on. China has yet to step up to the plate
Well, US economy is largest in the world, is very diversified, open, lots of investments, young population, world class education and dollar is the world reserve currency. While Russia' economy is smaller than Italy's reliant on natural resources, ageing population, international isolation, unstable ruble etc., etc.

EU should be dissolved. It was okay when it was the Common Market but the EU bureaucrats have usurped more and more power. These bureaucrats are not elected and they are led by cultural Marxists with many screwy ideas. e.g. Dropping the borders before an all-EU border land/sea/air patrol was created. Unless wrecking the nation-states of Europe was the real goal of the EU. (imho: a very real possibility that this was the plan)
The original plan of the EU was to create a situation where European states no longer find it easy to declare war on each other compared to instead cooperating with each other. This idea formed in the wake of WW2 unsurprisingly and was proposed by the French. It's basically a replacement on previous European ideas to keep the peace, which WW1 and WW2 showed not to work. In any case bBased on how things are going this seems to have some what worked. Due to it being a political project as such, instead of an economic one. Certain things might have been pushed forward faster then was wise though. Still they do reform it after the fact over and over again. So for instance the ruling bodies of the EU are now elected in various ways and it looks a bit like a Parliament-Senate-Executive structure now. Though with the oddity of the Senate electing the Executive instead of the Parliament. (And thus increasingly looking like a country as such) And they are now looking in to a combined border patrol system and other such things to control immigrant flow. Still it does end up being a bit backwards, solving the problem after it rears its head once. On the other hand, atleast they do try to solve their problems, even if they're slow about it. As a government goes, this is far from stellar governance, but it's far from the depths of incompetence seen in many other places as well. (Especially say Venezuela)
The nature of Europe will irreversibly change if the illegal immigrants are not deported soon and the Immigrant policy immediately tightened to favor skills vs. the current policy of family unification and the importation of brides from the immigrants' native countries (These men want their brides young and ignorant to control them more easily) Also ..... The farmland of Europe can only support "x" number of people (as is true elsewhere in the world). Climate change will impact the countries of Europe with rising sea levels, and changing weather patterns.

> How Putinomics works
TL;DR it doesn't
It does as long as there are reserves to use up (both financial and human). When the reserves dry up the whole thing collapses. But I guess their plan is "lets leave this problem for the future generations"
it works. There r many new opening factories, farms and other stuff, Russia is getting lots of investitions because of weak rubble it became easier for making business here
Russia now is #11 in GDP from #12.
@@zjpdarkblaze it was #6 in 2013
Klash1100 Yes, that was when crude oil prices were high. Now, Russia is working to diversify their economy in order to get that #6 spot back
Brilliant as always. Well done, your reports are getting better and better.

Cane Blu--You have at least been honest enough to say you hate Jews. Now, you need to reflect on that statement. The US has plenty of states with deficits, maybe it should eject them too using your logic.

Kudrin's reforms will lead nowhere, as they rely on foreign investments. There will be no significant investments, because they're too high risk for a typical Western investor. Titov's plan sounds like what most Russians would prefer.
Titovs calls also work look at China, everything stateowned highest growth since decades.
Vadim Kharichkov mercedes already opened a factory at moscow, west is opening lots of business in Russia
Jao Jao
Not nearly enough as needed.
As Russian you know Russia like for every inch, Good job Shirvan
I kinda feel sorry for him
Andras Libal Russia and china already proposed to change the petro-dollar and Russia state budget had a 50% dependency on oil/gas in 2015 while in 2017 it was 39% and in 2020 it will be 33%
Andras Libal Time of Petro dollar is comming to an end.
Andras Libal they have a growing industrial sector+ some of kudrins reforms could attract medium-size foreign enterprises to Russia, also they are now the biggest wheat producer in the world
Thank you CaspianReport, pragmatic and thorough research
If it had been a functioning democracy, Kudrin and Titov would have had two different political parties and would vie for people's mandate, instead of fighting for the approval of the strongman. A bit unfortunate.
There are many parties in Russia but United Russia is seen as the most stable middle ground choice. There ARE other parties with more liberal (or other different) platforms.
@@Endelite Russia is too corrupt and the elections are a sham, so it doesn't even matter how many parties are there.

That the Kremlin has a policy that favours stability and security is comprehensible and rational.
Oh,and btw the military budget also was cut back and is now lower than that of Saudi Arabia for example.

Do a video on the land seizures in South Africa

Something Russia needs to learn, what a lot of other countries (not even only western) already know: if your people are living good lives, your government, economy, country, etc. will live a good life. Ofcourse this is a very broad statement, but in overall it applies.
Russia has one big problem, the climate.
The government has to make sure that
the people in Siberia have enough food,
heat and fuel during the winter months.
The logistics to accomplish this goal
before winter sets in are daunting.
China has a similar problem; although
China's climate is not as severe as
Russia's climate. China's looming
problem is that climate change has
brought drought in the mountains
that supply China's rivers with water.
ozh Alex From my side of the river it does not seem so. But please enlighten me :)
People really think that private owners of companys are inherently less corrupt?
There's a lot more risk involved then the government cannot bail you out of trouble, therefore no incentive to steal exists then you have the competitors, laws and regulations biting your behind.

One of my former friends pronounced "Knife" with the "K", it gave me one of the best laughs ever! 🤣
Over those same 30 years 5% growth from developing countries like Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa, Brazil and etc will cause their economy to be bigger than Russia

tdr Exactly - in the west, and under Yeltsin, the President works for the oligarchs, but with Putin, the oligarchs work for the President and country
In my opinion, they could combine both Plans but in a Smart way.
Instead of cutting Defence Spending, like the Kudrin Camp suggested.
1. They could borrow money and Invest in Education and Health-care.
2. Fully liberalize the Non-Strategic sectors, (Strategic Sectors are Energy, Mining and Defence, and State-Owned companies)
Russia is doomed

Nice analysis; no BS.
Why don’t you criticize the US in the same way? US deficit is unsustainable.
Can't upset your sponsors.
So this is the rumored whataboutism.
Well, US economy is largest in the world, is very diversified, open, lots of investments, young population, world class education and dollar is the world reserve currency. While Russia' economy is smaller than Italy's reliant on natural resources, ageing population, international isolation, unstable ruble etc., etc.
Both parts need to be done, a little bit.
Borrow some money, make some military cuts and invest everything into education and healthcare.

Great one
the solution to this all if russia would join the EU no more geopolitical tensions just economic prosperity
EVNI ha good luck with that
EU should be dissolved.
It was okay when it was the Common Market but
the EU bureaucrats have usurped more and more
power. These bureaucrats are not elected and they
are led by cultural Marxists with many screwy ideas.
e.g. Dropping the borders before an all-EU border
land/sea/air patrol was created. Unless wrecking the
nation-states of Europe was the real goal of the EU.
(imho: a very real possibility that this was the plan)
They wouldn’t be allowed to join :D
(And thus increasingly looking like a country as such)
And they are now looking in to a combined border patrol system and other such things to control immigrant flow.
The nature of Europe will irreversibly
change if the illegal immigrants are
not deported soon and the Immigrant
policy immediately tightened to favor
skills vs. the current policy of family
unification and the importation of brides
from the immigrants' native countries
(These men want their brides young and
ignorant to control them more easily)
Also .....
The farmland of Europe can only support
"x" number of people (as is true elsewhere
in the world). Climate change will impact
the countries of Europe with rising sea
levels, and changing weather patterns.
Nice🎉
Always negative pieces about Russia and Iran, and delusional rantings about Turkey. Your Azeri bias is blinding you.
SamantheGreat I mean, Russia is quite shitty if you actually go there. Russia has big potential, but the corruption is high, so the elites get wealthy and none of the oil money ever comes down to the people
I can definitely agree with that. But Turkey is no Utopia. Do you not agree that Shrivan's videos about Turkey and the Geo-politics of Turkey are fluff pieces? As if Turkey's control of the two rivers flowing into Iraq and Syria are some sort of trump cards that nobody has the answer to. But hearing him tell it, Turkey is the new hegemon of the Middle East, even though its army has proven that it can't fight, Erdogan makes the biggest foreign policy blunders, and Turkey is becoming more isolated by the day.
SamantheGreat Turkey has all the makings of a regional power, however I believe that Cardigan is driving Turkey into the ground. He is the reason the Turkish military is inept and he is isolating the West for countries like Pakistan
Erlik Khagan What do you mean by shitty if you go there?
Russia is porer then most of west Europe, but it also looks better then most of it.
As for people, while they earn less, they live completly fine
Bolt Mix I'm talking about how 90% of Russia has shitty roads and shitty infrastructure that is crumbling. Plus the wages are low. You must have never been outside Moscow or St. Petersburg. Granted, these two cities have nice living standards and are beautiful. The rest of the country, not so much
Thank You Shirvan, you're awesome as always, there's intelligence report that Putin wants to liberate Constantinople and condone American invasion of Persia. How would you evaluate this report ?
