"You're better than Knopfler!" Rare praise from audience gets me through the busking day 9/10/19
Вставка
- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- I played this song a lot in 2019 over six months. After about the first 3 plays, I started to do my own thing and improvise as much as possible to fill those vocal holes. Every take I do is different. This guy at the end of the song 6:10, a Dire Straits fan, talked to me and gave me a nice compliment. Just remember, he said it, not me, so please direct hate comments to him at his email fyou@yahoo.com. It's not often anyone even stops to listen or tip, so this is a very rare event and a little thing like this makes the other 99% of the audience apathy worth it.

1) Street playing is not all fun and games and dancing kids. Doing this for 7 years. I regularly face not only verbal abuse, but physical assault as I work a few blocks from downtown eastside Vancouver. I'm surrounded by addicts, drunks, and people who should be in mental homes.
2) I'm unemployed. All live music including busking, is banned. I lost all work last year and received ZERO compensation. I had a very bad year in 2020 and only recently came out of a depression.
3) I make ZERO from youtube no matter how many views I get. I was demonetized by Google years ago as part of their culling of small accounts. Class action lawsuit was initiated. I don't run ads. And more importantly, even if I did, most of my videos are instantly copyrighted and auto monetized by record labels because they are COVERS. If you see an ad, it's the record label collecting. If you liked the performance, please think about supporting me on patreon/paypal tip/bandcamp.
4) I'm a musician that writes his own music for 20 years. Check out my bandcamp page to see what I can really do with a guitar. 500 albums of original instrumentals.
5) It's a lot of unpaid work to post these videos all the time so please try to help me keep the channel going. Many thanks to those that have supported me! It means a lot!
6) I get asked this 100 times a day so here's the answer: I play on the street and not in a band because all the clubs closed years ago. I used to lead many bands from 2006 to 2018. That's all gone. It's also a lot more hassle, and less money, to run a band than play by myself.
7) I get asked this 100 times a day. "Why don't you try a better spot?" THIS is the best spot. How do I know? I've tried all of them. This spot is even better than Granville Island which is all tourists. Vancouver does not have many spots to play. Maybe 3-4 downtown. I have to go where traffic is heaviest or you make no money. Playing on beaches and parks or near homes, condos, apt buildings, is forbidden. This is the main transit hub of trains/seabus and also walkway for the convention centre as well as heavily touristed gastown.
Fact: No one can be better than Mark Knopfler.
But you, you absolutely are awesome
Kind words are sometimes better than tips! Too few appreciate live music nowadays and we are living in a strange world!
no he is different, gee talant
@Russ Sabourim Tommy is a different beast, one of my favourite guitar players alongside MK for sure, but I wouldn't compare the two of them. I equally enjoy both of them.
It's subjective. If you think he is, he is.
It's apples and oranges. No two players are exactly the same in their styles. I think it's a great compliment to Mark Knopfler that such a great guitar player chooses to cover his songs. I for one prefer players who do covers to play them adding their own style and not just note for note. One example that comes to mind is Jose Feliciano playing the Beatles song, "In my life".. Completely different style and I personally like it better than the Beatles version.
How can people just walk by like this masterpiece is given to them for free.
Totally agree
Because about 90% of the population is ASLEEP. Sad. They are all on their way to listen to some rap, Beyonce, or Cardi B.
I'd call my job and be like, "yo I gotta slight temperature, gonna go get tested for coronavirus, gonna have to take the day off..." and I'd sit my ass right there on the sidewalk and listen until dude packed up and went home.
Sooo beautiful 👌 👏👏👏
How can people walk by and be so totally tone deaf.
This video is like a short documentary of how much modern society lost appreciation of good live music.
Very few on the planet can play at this level. Gifted
People are just zombies who have no taste of their own. Even if you don't like guitar if you are a living person the chords will resonate in your soul. These people are lost
@@Jim26D or just trying to get to work lol
They've lost their soul.
People have lives, unlike this bum
I can listen to this all day long. Seriously.
Me too, I've become addicted.
@@vivienleigh4640 Almost forgot to click the like button, because of listening - almost... ;)
That’s exactly what I thought too. If he went on playing I would still be listening. It’s a great tune for variations, so it never gets old.
That makes at least 113 of us. He's become part of my nightly viewing. I'm not a TV guy.
Well, Harry wouldn't mind if you were to do just that. Cheers.
Absolutely brilliant! Appreciate it man!
I’m amazed you don’t have 50-100 people standing and listening. This is fantastic
dt vancouver is a bunch of zombies
I am 70 yrs old and I've now watched all of your videos at least once, subscribed, and am mesmerized by your unbelievable talent!! All my favorites from back in the day. In most of them, only a couple of people actually stop to listen or drop some coins. Most are oblivious to the entertainment you are providing them. How anyone can walk right by unfazed is mind-boggling. Thinking of moving to Vancouver so I can set up a lawn chair and listen (and tip) all day!! MAXIMUM RESPECT TO YOU, SIR!!!
Wow, thank you! It’s a real shock for me to get this kind of reaction after years of being ignored on the street. Turns out it’s just my city and not the rest of the world that feels this way.
@@shatnershairpiece I'm born and raised in Vancouver. I Love you're playing , just don't get downtown much after moving to the burbs !
I second that from the bottom of my heart ♥
I had the same thought about bringing a lawn chair and just watching all day.
Dude at 1:38 was like something touched my soul, he had to stop in disbelief! Great job
Beautiful, such talent, people just don't understand how much goes into playing a guitar that well👏👏👏👏
he is in music from 1970's , that is how long it takes.
Of course they don’t understand when most of the kids listen to DJs and call that music. LISTEN TO THE BEAT BROO... (de)generations
@@magichackerv8 check also Lexington Lab Band on youtube, they are also great musicians
Agree.
So true
The skilled required to play at this elite level is astounding. You've honed your talents and gifts, so admirable.
I love it when a performer does a cover in his/her own style and kills it...
Man he Got the Lead, Rythym AND Vocals in
AND was ablé to improvisé over the top of it
all, and I've been listening to this song sincé
1978, ¡¡¡¡¡¡ Wow
so happy you are not one of these trolls that attacks me for not copying the original. never understand these people. It’s like their brain is stuck in 1978.
@@shatnershairpiece I actually like your version more. Maybe it's because I've listened so much to the original that it's started to get boring, or it just happens to be better than the original all together.
All those people walking past is a disgrace. Wouldn't happen in England that. You are a genius by the way.
Americans have a very aloof culture. In city environments were are "supposed" to pretend everyone else does not exist or it looks weird.
@@del5582
'Americans' from the US claim that it would also be different there ...I guess it mostly depends on the town or the location.
This would 100% happen in England
@@del5582 Not true. Last week I was in London, playing this exact song in the exact arrangement and people just passed by, didn't want to stop and listen.
Folk are busy. There is a lot of talent in the States, perhaps they are used to it. Austin, Texas is the place to go, mega talent. This is great.
Those Canadians dont know how GOOD they got it!!!!....
Outstanding guitar work! Loved it all.
Glad you liked it!
Us musicians know most people would not recognize great musical performance from a blender in operation ... Luckily, there are those few old souls that occasionally make our life a little better by acknowledging our existence and our honed talents. Masterful command and playing, maestro.
Just beautiful - love the finger picking!
You re very very musically...😯. I love Mark Knopfler and you are perfect!!!! Thank for your music , for your guitar and for your force!!!!
From one Vancouver guitarist to another, you inspire me to keep on, no matter if no one seems to care about real music
I sure do miss the talented musicians of the 60’s and 70’s. You remind me that there is creative talent here today. Well done.
So nice to hear a different and personal interpretation of this, after hearing so many straight-up takes. Really enjoyed it.
I don't know how my random choices on UA-cam led me to you, but man! You have made my day worthwhile! If you were playing in Sydney I'd be there! Awesome 👍
Thanks! You can support this channel by checking the description links for patreon, PayPal tip, and band camp, where you can download 15 years worth of my original music. I’m still banned from Busking and I make no money from UA-cam videos.
As a fellow SYDNEYSIDER, I totally agree !!! 🍻😎
A lot of those good folks pass you by giving you silent praise but high praise. Knopfler wrote it, but you arranged this that day. You made, and are still making, a beautiful impression on many peoples' lives. Rock on and on.
This is the third video I have listened to now your art has made me feel joy today, thank you.
Beautiful playing , my brother ...from a fellow musician /piano player ...65 years in this earth ...seeing you play out there and most people walking by oblivious and unappreciative reminds me so much of the Joni Mitchell song “Playin’ real good for free”. -keep up the great work -Kudos !
That's the truth. I even wrote a book about being on the street. Any publishers out there? Quite a few amazing stories. It's like being in a war zone down there.
I’m 14 and I would’ve sat down to watch the entire thing. You’re amazing!
Adding some enthralling colors and textures to a masterpiece is a sure sign of artistic magnificence.
I'm a huge Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler fan tour own spin on this song is amazing....and I must say if I walked by and saw you playing...my whole days plans would be shot...I'd just pull up a lawn chair and listen for hours...your a true talent!
Love your vibe.
Please keep up.
Cheers from Portugal. 🥂
Have made a few comments on your channel but again I feel compelled to comment. It's inspiring seeing someone living their best life. Living life in their own unique way and seeming to love every minute. Brilliant stuff.
Well said!
Incredible talent. Very clean intonation, phrasing and control. Incredible, you need to be discovered.
Love your version of this absolute classic.brilliant
AMAZING!!! This could easily be the best version of this song I've ever heard.
You really touch my soul when you play! Your music is not only live is alive and AUTHENTIC!
Reminds me a little of a story that Chet Atkins used to tell. He was on cruise ship sitting on the deck playing his guitar. A man came along and listened to him for awhile and then stated,, 'You're pretty good, but you're no Chet Atkins".
Lol
This is a perfect example of why 'context' is so important. Put Knopfler on the street next to me. Totally ignored. Charge $500 a ticket? "Isn't he fabulous!"
@@shatnershairpiece so true, if it wasnt for the face people wouldnt know or see talent, is all about the ideal today. There is actually just so many good guitarrist out there. It was a thing back then to say someone was good (when guitarrist werent that easy to come by)..now with internet it seems there are just too many
@@juannunez4436 Yes, internet now creates 5 year olds that outplay Steve Vai. The other problem is that almost 100% of these internet guitarist plays from their bedroom. If I see another lesson video where someone gets 5 million views for showing how to play a 50 year old AC DC solo, I'm going to throw up. No one posts their own music anymore. It's all copy, copy, copy, like attack of the clones.
@@shatnershairpiece tbh is so sad that increeible talent people just go viral for covering songs to the perfect and not because they made great music.. is amazing that it also happends at classical music levels too. Im fine for the bedroom, but i wish they just composed more
All the people walking by just don't appreciate how lucky they are to have you there! I'm so envious! 💖🎶🎵
Playing this song by myself, I have to say, this was really a brilliant version!
The mixture of cites of the original, parts with the same playing style and completely own style parts was just perfect!
I fear you just made me playing this by myself all day... thx!
You are amazing. Don't give up, playing is your life. Luck will arrive. And hey, we are lucky to be alive playing and listening to great music
If you’re not better, you’re right there with the man. Thank you for this. Live music is magic. It can’t be held, just leased, and the memories are but mere shadows. This will live on. Outstanding.
Your the best 💯💯 love from 🇮🇳💛 I am 13 years old, I just started playing 🎸 you are awesome love you ❤

Holy chit man, I listened to this amazing rendition, and was forced to trade my Strat in for an accordion that I only play late at night in a secret location.
Thanks for the laugh!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I'd like to hear Sultans of Swing played on an accordian.
I bring lemons if U do catch fish I even fire up Barby, Ta 4 chuckles
Damn it's like he knows all the chords
Man I was sure that was Georges!
But he makes it cry and sing so well
Mind he strictly rhythm.
Who cares if he knows the chords....
He’s got a daytime job if all fails.... he’s doing alright.
Yes he does know all the chords,
but he ain't George.
George was strictly rhythm.
He didn't wanna make it cry or sing.
More over, a left-handed old guitar was all George could afford.
Fanfreakintastic guitar work my friend. 😀. Just so cool to listen to your improves of so many great tunes...
Dude, again I am glad your here,,, I dig your jams, took me away. Visions of the roller girl in my mind hip check. 😎
Some exciting, excellent playing. I'm sure Knopfler would be delighted. More please 🙏
I just started watching his videos and I am just amazed also with all the comments that I've read their all noticing the same thing as I am he doesn't seem to have a crowd around him people are just oblivious of this guy's Talent well if I lived in Vancouver I think on my days off I would just bring an ice cooler in a chair and pull up some of that sidewalk for a couple hours and be entertained by his greatness
Mate , absolutely amazing even Mr Mark knopfler will agree
you're doing your own thing , really feel sorry for people passing by and not stopping , too busy with life, you people stop for a minute smell the roses and listen to Art , would personally love to have you as my neighbour so I can listen to this all day
good luck mate well done
It might have started life as a DS piece but you made it your own. Amazing work. Many thanks.
This is what I aspire to be as a teenage busker. Keep it up man, love watching people do stuff like this.
ive seen and heard many great guitarists in the last 60 yrs but he is up there with my all time fav....Roy Buchanan

You're very good and very creative in the way you interpret those hits. Thanks for the music.
I listen to this again and again durring painting..it goes through my soul and bones
I love this song...and I love your version! So great!!!
Dude this is so cool playing for the people that’s what it’s about

you inspire me. that was hypnotic playing! i want lessons from you dude! absolutley amazing. 10 times better than anything i could ever dream of doing. keep it going!!
What an incredible interpretation. Wow.
The internet is full of great art and great people. But that’s no excuse not to try to learn and practice an art by oneself. By realizing how hard it is to become good in a certain art or job makes you more grateful, more empathetic and more mindful. Try things on your own! Invest your time and energy on working on yourself! That’s the only way to realize that walking by and listening to this great guitarist playing this fantastic song (in real and not only virtually) is NOT just an ordinary moment in your life but a valuable moment of enjoying, gratitude and understanding.
Fantastic. just checked your bandcamp and bought one of your albums. you're an insane guitarrist and a great composer. rock on!
Much appreciated!
Sir, listening to you fills my heart with sheer joy, nothing but joy. Am grateful and offer much thanks.
I appreciate the kind words and I’m very happy the music moved you. what can I say? You have great taste!
@@shatnershairpiece Your music would move any music lover who has good taste. i have seen most of the great guitarist who toured since the 80.s., a lot of them are truly great, many are predictable, you are not ! And that is why you stand out....besides you put melody in your music.
Vancouver is one of my favorite places that I have been to ( twice). Just shocked how they pass you by as though you invisible. Sorry mate.
The Sultans of Swing has been my favorite song since it came out in the 70's. I always stop what I'm doing and listen if it comes on. Your version is now my favorite!
How is there not 20 people Standing watching this Masterclass ????
Great job indeed! You have found room enough to elaborate a language similar to MK's, but still very "of your own" on a classic standard. Bravo!
Incredible how people barely react to such an awesome performance. Robots of the modern society. It's sad...
You're amazing! Thank you for sharing!
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME GUITAR PLAYING.
such a talent and so many people passed by with not even looking or listening a second!
damn your note selection and phrasing is among the tastiest I have seen on UA-cam my friend, subbed
He is so talented and such a beautiful ❤️ track.
The world is so consumed with technology, cell phones, Twitter, Facebook etc that 99.98% don’t even acknowledge the great player and music happening in front of them. The same zombies walking by are the same zombies that would wait outside overnight in the freezing cold for the next I phone. Sad people, sad.
People should be allowed to get on with what ever they want without someone calling them zombies. There is loads of great music out there and I bet you wouldnt stop for every style there is no matter what the performance. Does that mean you have zombie occasions too?
@@westindiman Agreed on the "having to stop" part, everyone loves music, but obviously people have to go somewhere and not everyone can stop. But to me it's just weird that most don't even bat an eye. Again nobody has to obviously but it's just surprising to me that it happens even on the craziest most amazing piano videos i've seen in malls or stations.
@@kylef9276 its pretty hard to tell who's "batting an eye" on this video. The camera angle isn't pointed towards people so theres a lot going on off screen. Anyway, not that it matters. The important thing is he's enjoying what he's doing
You are kind of missing things here. Some people are traveling and have a fixed schedule. Nice music loses out to finding the train/bus or the ticket vending machine.
Some may have a lunch break and a fixed number of thngs they need to do before being back at the office.
Some may have a fixed time when they need to pick up their child from school.
Assuming people walking past are zombies means you have entered zombie mode and forgotten to actually think about what is driving each individual that is walking past.
Per normal rules, I can say for certain that *you* have walked past great music too without looking. Many times while being so screened off in your focus that you haven't even noticed the musician.
It's sad when people misses the opportunity to listen to great music. But life is life and we all gave different things that drives us forward. How many great books have you missed out on? Great poems? Great technical exhibitions?
I mean people got shit to do. Or maybe they just don't care abt guitar lmao and have other passions
Omg...keep playing......I'll keep listening. Thank you for sharing!! Respect from Virginia.
Oh man! I was hooked after I heard you play Le Grange. There are good people out there who would miss the second half of their work day just to fall into your tone and chops. I am one of them. Damn! and I am hard to impress (a guitarist of 35 years)...
You are such a joy to listen to. Keep shining sir, you are awesome.
Great job! I can say that sultans of swing is not a easy song to play. But you play it and do it in your way. You're awesome!
glad you can appreciate me not copying the original!
Wow !!!! A guitar magician ...... amazing stuff .....
Man listening to you playing give me such good vibes
Beautiful playing
Your an amazing guitar player and the sound is awesome, listening on my computer at home in Wales in the UK.
Being from New Orleans, I'm used to hearing good music on every corner and in between. Alot of folks not even half as good make tips all day long. We love music here. There's room, come on!!!!
That got better and better. Awesome

Nice to see someone appreciating your hard work and talent. Far better than playing to yourself in a bedroom.. Quite a work out!
Most people don't know or appreciate good music when they hear it.
I'm currently learning how to play it with my guitar, and damn your version is amazing! well done i'm glad i saw this vidéo, it's great.
You play greatly!!! You're the first one (I've heard, but I've heard a lot) playing this song in his own way. All the others "simply" do what Mark has done on the record. I find you're version to be wonderful, you're really a great guitarist.
thanks. I never understood the need for people to copy original solos. It’s bewildering. The whole point of being a musician is to do your own thing as much as possible. improvisation is the be-all and end-all. what’s funny are the people that think I can’t play the original.
@@shatnershairpiece ahahahaha!!!! Your last sentence is so funny!! I'd like to add to what you wrote, that for me it may be very difficult to play the exact same notes of MK, but it does not mean I could not find "my" personal version that, in the end, would also be more natural to me and sounds more spontaneous.
I like a lot how you changed the chorus especially on the Bb chord.
All the best
@@alessiograziani6355 Funny you mention the b flat. I purposely avoid playing that chord because it's boring. I've got a few people now telling me not to play the chord I'm playing, that I should play the b flat. It's hilarious. First, they 'incorrectly' tell me I'm playing a c11, so they don't know what they are talking about, and then they're saying "I like your improv, but don't improv the chords." Who the f tells a musician how to interpret music? That's like knowing nothing about painting and then telling Van Gogh, 'That brush stroke is wrong, you should do it this way."
@@shatnershairpiece I find that the Bbsus2 that you play instead of the more classical Bb sounds more modern and open. Continue playing the Bbsus2, even Mark never thought about it... :)
Amazing performance and fresh take on an old classic!
