How I Met Your Mother | Official 'Alternate Ending'

  • SPOILERS AHEAD!
Ted Mosby's wife Tracy McConnell, the titular "Mother," doesn't pass away from a terminal illness in this more upbeat version that plays on the happenstance of previous seasons.
Even the cold manner in which the show reveals Tracy's death - a mere sentence after nine seasons of building up the relationship - was criticized by fans. That's not an issue here. In this ending, the widowed Ted Mosby doesn't wind up with the now-divorced Robin Scherbatsky; partly because Ted isn't widowed, partly because Robin stays married to Neil Patrick Harris's Barney Stinson. In short, no new footage but less divorce, less death, and more closure from the narration provided by Bob Saget.

While this ending will likely satisfy HIMYM fans that complained about the original ending, it also opens the door for criticism from people wondering how this alternate end was left on the cutting room floor. "16 days ago today we were in the HIMYM edit room, trying to decide between two very different endings," Bays explained of his decision back in April. "We only shot one script, but through edit room magic we had two possible outcomes for the series. We chose the ending we chose and we stand by it. But we loved the other version too."

I think How I Met Your Mother has to be the best example of "planning an ending in advance" and "simultaneously drawing the show out for several more seasons because it's popular" and it not working out in combination.
The original ending would have fitted really well if it happened after the first few seasons. The mother dying made sense and Ted and Robin not working out because they wanted different things in life and then getting back together after all was kinda obvious too.
But then the series went on and on and the characters just kept changing so much. They kept developing, just to then be forced into an ending that was created like a decade earlier and that completely disregarded all that character development they went through.
Robin and Barney were so perfect for each other. And Ted having that awkward "letting go of Robin" epiphany just to then go back to Robin after all was just stupid.
Sometimes you just gotta admit to yourself that the stuff you've been planning for 10 years doesn't fit anymore and let go.

    • @robatfreedomhouse
      @robatfreedomhouse Рік тому +132

The issue is that the cast weren't sure if they would stay on for another season (think it was Jason Segal who was on the fence), so the showrunners started wrapping up the series throughout season 8. The problem then was that the cast DID agree to stay on, but Ted already met the 'Mother', so they stretched out S9 so it was set over a whole 3 day period. S8 & s9 both just felt extremely padded and it was really frustrating to watch, especially after following the gang over all those years

I consider this to be the true ending. As much as I hate SOME of the edits George Lucas made to the Star Wars movies after the fact, I truly believe that films and television programs can be altered after the fact in a positive manner. In this case, they felt stuck with an ending they wrote and filmed back when they weren't sure they'd even get a 2nd season, let alone a 9th, so they aired it even though it flew against years of character development. And after fan backlash, they used what they had to create the ending that should have been. This is 1 of 2 canon endings, and it's a clear favorite, not simply because Ted gets a happy ending, but because it doesn't destroy years of storytelling and character building over the span of 15 minutes.

I just wish there were more of them, more scenes, more moments with their kids - so we could have seen how they built their family. the very idea itself of making whole season around one wedding is great, but it’s like at some point they’ve forgotten the plots name. it’s the mother who should have been the main character in the last season. by the time show had ended we already got all the information about main five people we needed. we’d seen all grow ups and character building. we needed Tracy to become the main character. it’s just my opinion, let it pass by

I just rewatched the series for the upteenth time. I still can't endure the ending. I really don't mind Tracy dying at all. It makes sense, given the circumstance. And I love the little loving moments between Ted and Tracy that make it all too obvious she doesn't make it. But Robin and Barney shouldn't have gotten divorced, and Barney shouldn't have had his backslide, undoing seasons of development. I expected an ending akin to episodes like The Lucky Penny, where Ted mourns the loss of his wife, but leaves a lesson for his children. Something about how love is always worth it even when we know we'll lose it, one way or another. Lily says that Ted is a person with more emotional endurance than she has ever known. That's absolutely true, and was the lesson they could have ended on. Being vulnerable, open, and willing to get your heart broken time and again was the lesson of the whole show. Even the heartbreak of losing the love of your life. It could have ended on a note of tragic optimism. Instead, we got a cliche ending that was predicted years ago, and we were explicitly told would not happen. We got the FRIENDS ending. And it just didn't work.

The character development of Barney was killing the character. He is to a large extent a tragic hero. He uses nd loses women. He may hate it but it's the only way he knows how to live. And tbh, he still reaches some level of maturity when his daughter was born... But Barney and Robin were never supposed to work... I disagree. As someone who has been divorced, Robin and Barney never really made any sense to me. Also, it's very common for people to fall back to their old ways after a break-up. Happens all the time. But it had been said several times that Barney wanted to be a father... even his mother questioned him about being with Robin if he couldn't be a dad (yes, I know he could in other ways). So although he did a backslide... which happens all the time... he also changed for the good after his daughter was born and recites exactly what he said that he could NEVER say to a woman.
I don't remember anyone saying that the ending wasn't going to happen like this. Maybe they just didn't want to spoil it, but it's very obvious that the aired ending was the original idea. I thought it worked really well. The truth is that most people don't just have a single true love in their lives. Tracy had two. Ted had two. I've had two. Many people have. would

You have things that help with diseases and that god awful excuse of the internet going down and the whole blog thing was stupid when we have internet, cell phones and etc to occupy our time. Barney, young and old would have enjoyed traveling with the woman he loved and they both enjoy the same things in life. It was the creators who did not know who these characters they created were but the actors did especially Neil and Cobie who wanted them together because they understood the characters they played. But the way it was told wasnt realistic based on the other 8.75 seasons. The guy drags on about every little story, including extreme detail about Barney and Robins wedding , but then is quickly like "yea but they broke up" afterwards.
Also Ted and Robin ending up together made sense for a while in the show, but everything he did to move on from her leading up to the wedding gets completely undercut if he just ends up with her anyway.

The biggest problem is: When you re-watch the show you can clearly see that mother was gonna die, it was planted here and there. That maked it so that when you watched it again there were scenes that really make you understand the scene more. But with Barney and Robin's relationship, they made them perfect for each other, they developed their characters. Both Barney and Robin sacrificed a lot just to be with each other, it took years for them to see each other in the truest sense and they realized they were the ones for each other. That's why when people say "Ending is realistic" don't make sense. It's not realistic at all, it destroys the believability of the show because the whole show said something else just to say something else in the last minute. Whole show showed us Barney grew up, he found love again, he knew Robin was the one and slowly got his heart fixed, He endured a lot for her, she actually was through whole show the only woman Barney truly fell in love with and they made that clear. Robin, loved Barney deep down, although she was suspicious at first slowly but surely realized how much he loved her, she saw him as someone he never let anyone else see: Someone vulnerable. And in the end they were like "Aight, we need a divorce because of my blog". There's theories that make much sense than this. They could've simply showed us Barney wanted kids, Robin didn't and they broke up over that. At least it would be realistic that way but no they broke up for a dumb reason and gave up their whole character arc just because.

    • @JSmellerM

They did film the scene about how the show originally ended in the first season. Look at the kids, they are still as young as they were when the series started. So the ending was planned way, way in advance. And yes, there were those hints but as the show went on the characters developed in a way that made the original ending bad. The whole wedding season basically destroyed the original ending. At that point they should've realized their original idea didn't work anymore but that's where you find out if the writers are good or extraordinary. Extraordinary writers let go of an original idea even if it wasn't a bad idea.

For somehow, i hate Robin too. Everybody devoted so many things for her, and she put her career on top all of that, giving up her friendship and even her marriage. She did not sacrify for once.
And Ted was such a stubborn "simp". Finally, he got his "the one" and still ended up with Robin although MANY MANY MANY moments in the show pointed out that he was ready to let Robin go (like the beach scene right before Barneys wedding). This part pissed me off so hard. It makes Tracy no longer "the one" and she was just like someone who happened to be Ted's wife and died so he could return to Robin again.
One of the best show ever yet has the worst ending

I cried so much when I watched it. It may just be a TV show but I was going through some pretty serious life stuff during the time this show first aired. It became an escape. I watched the character growth and development, I applied my own issues to some the characters faces and while I may have been alone it gave me hope things would eventually be ok. I know it's just a TV show.. but when the original ending appears it was such a slap in the face. Everything that was built for the last nearly 9 years all destroyed in the last two parts.

it isn't even a problem that tracy died in the original ending, it's hinted at throughout the series bc it's what was intended so early on, and I think it gives more weight to the premise of ted telling his kids this ridiculously long story. i actually think tracy dying and ted NOT ending up w robin would've really underlined the fact that ted really did find The One in the end, like the entire show was about. idk it just feels kinda cold to have 8 seasons of ted/robin will they won't they (which imo perfectly highlights how wrong they are for eachother) one whole season abt barney/robins wedding and how great they were for eachother all this time, only to backtrack on everything just to fit this sort of pre established rule of sitcoms that the will they won't they couple must end up together. himym felt like a perfect deviation from that rule and a real breath of fresh air, so having it all erased right at the end made me (and obviously a lot of other people) feel kinda cheated. on the other hand i do kinda like that what makes barney give up his hedonistic, selfish, and typically misogynistic ways was having a daughter of his own. its mentioned that he likes kids a lot in the series. I feel like it actually could've been used to make the barney/robin breakup make way more sense, barney sees this as a new thing to devote himself to and a second chance, and robin just never wanted kids. if they HAD to have barney and robin break up, that's how I would've wanted it to happen.

I just finished the last episode. I’m really glad this alternate ending exists. I think the original ending was really sad and screwed up what could’ve been a good ending. Ted broke up with Robin because she didn’t want kids and was independent even if she had a lot of childhood problems. Ted wanted to have kids and be married. So it seems forced that he would come back to her with the blue French horn. Seeing Barney and Robin breaking up was upsetting because the audience spent so much time watching them chase after eachother and wanting to be together only to have it yanked away in the last episodes. Barney was also kinda independent but manipulative, telling huge lies etc but he did develop when he used his wealth to help his best friends. That’s why his ending sucked. Barney was happy and independent only to have a kid with a woman he barely knew.

Yea, I didn't like how Barney just regressed and knocked some random girl up at the end, with a tacked on fatherhood development. He and Robin could've been an iconic child-free couple 😠
And with Tracy, the "real" ending makes it seem like she was just a stepping stone or surrogate for Ted to have kids with, so he could then go back to Robin. The whole thing just... feels wrong af on several levels. They all got done dirty 🤷‍♀️

Thoughts and a slightly alt ending:
Tbh Tracy dying actually made sense, but i actually think that Ted's intention to tell the story sucked, when Penny said that he told them to tell the story just because he still has "the hots for aunt robin"
i think it would've made more sense that Ted did mention that Tracy died, they show a flashback of the scene where Ted was reading Tracy a book, Ted reminding the kids of his last moment of their mother while walking to a somewhat grassy field, then it reveals that
Ted actually told them the story since (lets just say) that its been a decade or the 10th year anniversary of Tracy's death, and as Ted was about to put Tracy's yellow umbrella on her grave, he tells the scene of both of their first interactions- waiting for the train. Then the outro fades in
Robin and Barney- I also think that them getting a divorce made sense, it was clear that they loved each other but with every other failed relationship Robin had, they broke up because of her career.
I would've used the appearance of Barney's brother (BB since i dont know his name) at the wedding to reach out to Barney and robin that BB trusted Barney to co-parent his kids since he was having . hard time with single parenting (from his partner dyig) and say that he and his partner had a baby, but since Barney knew and loved Robin, he respected her not wanting kids and hold BB off but saying he would help if he can.
Now that obviously him and robin had divorced, a few weeks after feeling depressed (but NOT turning to banging random chicks), BB goes over t. comfort Barney only t. be surprised that Barney's apartment is all changed and homey with little aspects of his personality(ofc). Barney also prepared A room for the baby and the kids, and he was willing to fhange and be the cool "youre living with me uncle" (expecting for that to be used as a running but also comforting joke) and changed his weird bang1ng habits.
While Robin is completely happy with her new career, travelling around the world and possibly also started a dog rescue or hotel center
    But idk tho

YESSSS...the fact that Marshall and Lily go to Rome is yet another example of this. True love CAN allow women to grow and evolve too! As well as "playboys" and Nice Guys TM. Ted actually grew as a person, unlike Ross. And I love that Marshall got another chance at a judgeship...if they're going to play at wish fulfillment for Tracy being so perfect for Ted, and Lily and Marshall, why revert to the trope that a woman pursuing her career guarantees a lonely, unhappy life full of regrets? People DO grow, and while it's not easy, I have seen such fairy-tale endings in real life, too. Much more satisfying than "woman throws away her career or lives miserably for the next dozen years until the wife of the man who wasn't a match for her dies and they can be together, because the spouse who did match her loses all character growth and stops being the guy who finds fun in every moment."

Which show am I talking about?
A group of friends with three male characters; one of them expresses in the first episode that he just wants to be married. A female character joins the group in the same episode and said male character reaches out to her semi-successfully. He keeps chasing her until he gives up, which is when the female character falls for him. They kiss, but she finds out something related to the break-up with his last relationship which stops them from becoming a couple. After a few episodes they manage to get together anyway and they stay a couple for about a season. Then they split up for a long time (except for some short-lived relapses).
Meanwhile, the womanizer of the group falls in love with the female character. At first nothing comes of it, but then - with the approval of the first male character - they get together. However, eventually they break up again and at the very end it seems that the male character has finally and for good won the heart of the woman he fell for in the first episode.
If you can't tell whether I am talking about Friends or HIMYM, then you are right - the main romantic arc of the two shows has the absolute same structure. Which is why I hate the official ending!
HIMYM sold itself as the show that began like Friends but wouldn't end like it - it promised that Ted and Robin would be no Ross and Rachel, that he needed to get over her instead of winning her over. This is what made it interesting and alluring. And then they decided to end it like Friends anyway - raising the question: Why does this lazy rip-off of a show even need to exist? Tracy, a great character, turned out to be nothing but a gimmick to be deposed as soon as she had fulfilled her role of dragging us along with the promise of a more interesting story.
I still love HIMYM, but I only watch it with the alternate ending. It's not overly inspired, but it works and doesn't make the preceding seasons feel like a big waste of time. The official finale is a bigger slap in the face for the viewers than all of Marshall's slaps combined.

Everything moves in one succinct way and Tracy is so perfect for Tedd in these brief clips with him as she lives out the remainder of her life that we forget how much of a villain Tedd kind of was throughout the whole series. Everything about this ending is so perfect that it truly is a shame that we as an audience got the other ending instead which shows just how much the writers didn't understand that characters that they themselves had written so well over the years.

After reading lots of comments I have some thoughts... As a huge RobinxBarney lover I definitely consider them having a happily ever after, after they got married but I also get it when people say it's realistic for them to get divorced after three (?) years since they both weren't the biggest commitment people and enjoyed not being in a relationship. However if you watch the show closely that still doesn't really make sense because Barney literally said (in the episode where they were going to sell his apartment) he never wanted to be alone again. The characters, especially Barney (!), had so much development in the later seasons it's a crime to just throw it in the trash like in the "original" ending.
What I really don't get though are BarneyxRobin "haters" who say it's obvious they don't work out because of their first breakup; because after that they both changed- and had a lot of character development. Barney had other relationships (which he hadn't had in s5) and became a much better version of himself and they both said they were ready for commitment.
I like both Nora and Quinn as well but it was even showed Barney and Robin were soulmates when Nora's dad talks about meeting the right person.
For Ted and Tracy I guess it sort of makes sense she has passed away, even though it's very sad, because why else would Ted be so invested in his past and stories? The worst part is Ted getting back with Robin, it would've been way better if he just had stayed a single dad. Ted and Robin are great as besties but apart from that they really don't have THE chemistry like Robin and Barney/Cobie and Neil have. Honestly, I feel like Ted and Robin barely even liked eachothers personalities. Also I kind of feel like the show hadn't really found Robin's character until around s3 when they had broke up..?

+ I really don't agree when people say they like the original ending because it's realistic to real life, I mean it's fine to like that ending but it's not realistic because even though this show has a lot of deep it's still clearly a sitcom and a TV-show with LOTS of unrealistic elements. If you spend a whole season building up to a wedding you hinted about already in s6, spent the last seasons of character development for the fan favorite character (Barney) it's nothing but AWFUL writing to just throw it all in the trash in the last 2 episodes.
