Beth you REALLY need to review the band called Saphath. With this year's military conflict their debut album almost went unnoticed even despite high ranks in metal magazines, that's undeserved. A good point to start would be the music video entitled "Outcast of Eden". They have a lot happrning in their music, even their background choirs are recorded live.

Tori Amos is an anomaly as a singer. She does just about everything that singers are told constantly they should not do. But somehow, it works perfectly. She croaks, she squeaks, she breathes heavily on the mic, and she shifts in and out of tone and tune. One of my music appreciation professors used Tori Amos as an example of things that shouldn't work, and that wouldn't work for anybody BUT Tori Amos.
Her style and sound remind me of Loreena McKennitt.
Many 90s artists, esp early 90s, were not afraid of sounding "ugly," and in doing so they made great art.
I don't think Tori is capable of sounding ugly, but YMMV...

Tori Amos sounds like a hippie on a piano under the narcotic effect of some external substance. It also feels like she's trying to be somehow theatrical with her voice, in order to give it enfasis but thus ruinning the flow of the melody, whether instrumental or vocal or both at the same time. I rather "Sharon Den Adel - Crucify" version.

Bela, I majored in Psychology and Counseling so learned a little about synesthesia in school and it IS fascinating. Why would you say it is scary and lonely (if you don't mind me asking)? Just curious. Thank you!
Spring of '92 a roommate had the Little Earthquakes CD. I taped it and listened to it in my truck for a couple of months non stop. Got to know the songs really well.
Heard she was coming to Jacksonville, FL. Very little promotion of the show. Friday, August 14th, 1992, Club Carousel, an old roller skating place. There were probably only about 100 people there. She had her piano right in front of a large crescent carpeted steps area, most of us just sat on the steps a few feet from her. Very relaxed, amazingly intimate.
She played everything from Little Earthquakes, and included a version of Led Zepplin's Whole Lotta Love.
She sounded just as good as this video shows, it was downright incredible. The fact that I was so familiar with the songs, it was so intimate, and she sounded so fantastic, all made it out to be the greatest concert experience I've ever had.
Oh yeah, it was $5. Really.
Thanks for covering Tori. I particularly love what she does with her breathing, all the emotions she can add just by playing with breath is astounding.
I've seen hundreds of concerts, but I've seen her alone with her piano 25 years ago, and to this day it's the most striking one I've ever experienced.
As a professional piano player I was very impressed. She doesn't have the technicality of a classical concertist of course but the way she uses her piano: the pedal for rhythm, the sounds she is able to produce, not to mention her approach to harmonies (and the use of the Fender Rhodes), are incredibly creative and breathtaking. Her voice was so pure, cristal clear and so "real" (with that famous small reverb that makes you feel like she's singing at 10cm of your ear). But the most impressive of all is the way she interacted with the audience , not only the fact that she asked several times which song we wanted to hear next , or that she spent as much time conversing, explaining, telling stories, or jokes than singing but above all, and we can see her doing it in the video but can't realize it: she was literally making eye contact with everyone she was able to see while singing. I don't know how (and what amount of confidence you need to be able to do that!) and she's the only artist I've seen able to do it, but the fact is that I felt like she was singing to me personally, and the guy on my right felt the same way, as the girl on my left and everyone in there.
It was a memorable emotional roller coaster journey, and well, 25 years later, I still remember it clearly^^

Your experience sounds like mine. I’ve seen her several times, as well, but nothing compares to the first time at a small opera house in Virgina; just her and her piano. I’d only just heard of her for the very first time that same day, and bought a ticket for the show. It was powerfully affecting. I’ve never forgotten that night.
Was that when she toured with Alanis? I seen them together in Detroit and is easily one of my favorite concerts ever.
Saw her in west palm with lifelong friends about the same time. One of if not the best live performances I have ever had the privilege of being a part of. There were times where you could hear the person breathing next to you because how intently everyone was listening and then there were outcries of love and appreciation. It was a truly beautiful experience!
And she is actually classically trained (accepted to the Peabody Institute at age 5), but she has moved onto her own style.

Maybe because Tori has the ability to flay humanity open and raw, to make us look at a part of ourselves that few want to admit exists.

Because some people just listen to what their spoon fed through MTV or BET, or CMT an some people have musical tunnel vision where they only listen to one or two types of music.people need to get out of the musical monotony n listen to something fresh n different at times

I was lucky enough to see her in a tiny club in Middlesbrough on her first ever European tour. She brought even the bouncers to tears. A gig I'll never forget.

Tori should be much more 'famous' than she is because she's a genius; she has a beautiful voice and uses it in that way when it's suitable, then switches to a more distorted sound when that is needed. Thanks Beth for the great points you made. As an amateur singer myself, that was very helpful. x
Saw Tori the first time in 1994. Still one of my best concerts.
She's breathtaking to watch perform. I love everything about her! My husband got to have lunch with her in 1991 or 92. It was a contest he won and he couldn't bring me. Sad. Lol but he got to go and he said she was very down to earth and easy to talk to.

Tori is a real musician/songwriter. To me she's sort of a successor to Kate Bush. The first song I heard from her was Caught A Lite Sneeze and I was instantly hooked.
That was my first too, and what a discovery!

I am so glad you reacted to this, great reaction. I love Tori always, but she is something else live. Some artists put on a good performance of their songs, Tori sings them like it's the first time and the emotion, how she performs it, where she goes with the song is how she feels now and in this moment. I saw her once at the Royal Albert Hall and I did something I've never done before, I booked immediately and saw her the next night in another venue. It felt different each night, even for songs in both performances (and there was a LOT that was different). A different kind of venue, the Royal Albert Hall vs an indoor auditorium, a different mood, a different energy. It felt very personal and like hearing them for the first time both nights. It is incredible seeing her perform on both piano and keyboard at the same time and having perfect control over her singing, but it not feeling like it's been practiced into submission.

Hi Beth, love your channel. I'm a die hard metal fan. Usually the harder, the faster, the better. Face melting solos, pounding drums, screaming vocals, I love it all. However, I saw Tori perfom this song live on much music back when it was a new release from her first album, the performance was much the same as this one and it had me in tears, then and today. Even a metalhead like me can appreciate true musical perfection when I see it. Thanks for this one, love it!

90's alternative is still my favorite music. So much raw emotion and power in the music and lyrics; unfortunately, often fueled by trauma. You feel every emotion written into the songs, especially with an artist like Tori. I remember catching the video for 'Silent All These Years'. I had never heard of her but had to hear more. Over the years I kind of drifted away from Tori's newer stuff after, I think, the first 4 albums. Little Earthquakes though, is still an absolute masterpiece in my mind.

Great reaction and analysis. This is such a nostalgic song for me. I haven't heard it in years, but I still remembered every note and word. Btw, if you haven't heard them, check out Y Kant Tori Read. It's a band that she was in in the '80s that had a very different sound from her solo work.

I’m always amazed at how powerful her voice is and what range she has, seeing as how her voice is so soft and low when she speaks (and I love her speaking voice- it’s one of the most wonderfully soothing I’ve ever heard).
Nearly 30 years ago I saw Tori live here in Sydney. She came out and sang "Song for Eric" acapella first up and basically stunned the audience into silence for the rest of the night. Sheer perfection in voice, piano, timing, everything, and never likely to be topped.
Even when I went full on metal in high school a bit after this album came out, Tori was a common diversion. She is so great. I've only seen her once live, but it was incredible. This whole show is great, btw.
I remember when this album came out. I was just starting high school and really finding my footing as a music fan. I was rapidly becoming the diehard metalhead that I am today, but I was also drawn to a lot of beautiful, non-metal music as well.
‘Little Earthquakes’ was, and still is, a magnificent album and this song was the reason I bought the album in the first place. It has been a very long time since I have listened to it and I think, like you, I really needed to hear this song today.
I still love Tori Amos and she is still up there as not only one of my favourite non-metal artists (along with people like Nick Cave, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel), but one of my overall favourite artists.

Is it my birthday!?!? No! But just as nice 😍 found Beth roars via the smells like teen spirit cover and have enjoyed learning and experiencing music through Beth’s delightful ears and thoughts… but to see another tori video reallllly takes the cake.
I’d love to hear about her changing voice as she felt exceptionally strong w the band (compared to overall recent tours) this past leg, and really warmed up from Feb to the last shows in June 😍
The bits about her technical proficiency are interesting in the context of how she has evolved and adapted to time coming for us all. It may seem like a bit of a parlor trick at this point to those who have been around forever, but even having been around forever, I still go into (technical) art pure bliss mode when she’s playing the Bose with her left and various keyboards with her right (while emoting and sharing the fuck out of her soul and abilities in her vocal deliveries). She really is a master of storytelling and dynamics. Some of us take it for granted having seen and heard her at so many times in our lives over a 30 year span…. But I hope never ever to. Attending shows is committing yourself to a night of wonder and skill and pathos.

Tori is amazing! I’ve seen her in concert a few times now, including one where it was just her and her piano, and it was sublime. Her singing, playing, storytelling and engagement with the audience makes for a magical experience. Her voice and music is also arguably ‘different’ from what we often hear too - theres a definite quirkiness which is interesting and refreshing. It was great to hear you discuss what she was doing with her voice and choices during the song; it gives me a whole new appreciation for her talent.
Winter has always been my favourite Tori song - I’m an absolute sucker for the music: the piano, the orchestral swells, the drama, and it’s just such an emotional song (arguably like all of her music). Would love to see that one make one of your videos :) Thank you for sharing.
First time I heard Tori Amos - it was Muhammad, my friend - I didn't know any English at all and I had no idea what's she signing about but her performance was absolutely captivating nonetheless. She's like an embodiment of raw, unstoppable female power. It's like a goddess herself descended down to Earth. Still love her, such an amazingly powerful singer and performer.

Tori is a fascinating singer. But my bias is to piano, and on that front, she is a force of nature. Good grief, she's amazing on keys. I particularly love her piano work on "Caught a Lite Sneeze," "Precious Things," and "Bouncing Off Clouds."

You hear her studio albums and think, zero way she pulls that off live, then she pulls that off live. Though, it has to be said that this shows her vocal ability but doesn't demonstrate the real power of her songs. The combination of her incredible voice and song writing, and the production on this album is monstrous. She really uses her breath as an instrument like no one else I'm aware of as well.
Of course, you look behind Tori and you'll see Kate Bush back there. It's a lineage. And moving forward, to people like Regina Spektor.

Tori's voice is so rich and her discography is so extensive - and has evolved so much! - I could listen to you teach me how to sing just based on Tori's work forever! (Tori is a born piano prodigy, able to replicate pieces she'd heard on the radio at the age of *2.* That led to her abortive attendance at the Peabody Institute, as you mentioned. She also sang at church, her father a Methodist minister, and in gay bars in Washington DC, so she cut her teeth singing choral pieces as well as pop songs...) Ahh Glorious! More! More! 💕
Even with her amazing lyrics, I have also always loved how much Tori integrates her breath into the music as if her taking in more air is part of the vocals. She never tries to hide her breathing or minimizes the volume of it.

Omg, eventually something about T.A. I love her since 90s when I've been living in Kazakhstan and that time was really hard to find a tape with Tori. I remember winter day when I walked 1 hour across the city to buy album Boy for Pele in the central store. Her clear voice is only one that brings me calm and relax and emotional pleasure. She is absolutely genius composer: Sugar, Precious Things, Past the Mission, Black Dove, Crusiffy and other great songs.
My wife's favorite singer. I got brownie points for having a few albums when we were dating.
This tour is amazing and she is back at the top of her game again. It's well worth seeing if you can.

Her early stuff was incredible. Such a unique voice, right up there with Doloris O’Roirdan.
I have been a Tori fan for many years. She is a true talent 100%. I seen her on TV a few times on the late night shows, back in the day. On one show she sang Father Lucifer. Well that was on her newest CD at the time. What amazed me about her performance was she sang alternative lyrics added to the song. Watching videos of her in concert I noted she will do this to quite a few of her other songs. She keeps you on your toes and you never know what story she is going to tell.
Even though I haven't heard a whole lot from Tori, I've always appreciated her. Just love her music and her voice. I used to get her and Fiona Apple confused since they reminded me of each other.
The premise "why do we doubt ourselves so much" is incorrect, because we don't necessarily do that in real life, unless you are a basket case.
Doubt, hurt, remorse, etc. is in music and theater for dramatic purposes. Otherwise music and drama would be too bland to entertain.
Her songwriting, her compositions and her playing and her voice all are extraordinarily expressive and emotionally riveting. I don't know anything about vocal technique, but I know she is my favorite musician and singer by many miles because of the effect she has had on my mind, my heart and my imagination.

Try teenage pregnancy. You are crucified, ostracized, criticized, judged, doubted, and whispered about with every breath, everywhere you go, even at home. I looked like a 12 yr old carrying triplets. It was embarrassing. (I was 17).
There is no choice that is okay. I kept my son. I heard nurses talk about me in the halls after my c-section. They said my mother was going to end up raising him, (she didn’t have time to raise me.). Every time he misbehaved in public it was because I was only 19. I was a good mother. Yet I grew up feeling ashamed to the degree that even my son grew up judging me. His friends at school thought I was his sister. He’s 33 now and people guess me to be in my 30’s. I guess I am too immature to grow up after all. Lol.
I NEEDED SUPPORT MORE THAN ANY NEW MOTHER COULD POSSIBLY NEED IT, BUT I WAS PUNISHED. The dad decided he wasn’t in the mood to become a dad so he moved away.
I would say that I wish he would have been the one to get pregnant, but I would never trust him being solely responsible for my child.
It’s not fair.

BTW, I got my GED and went straight to college. I got through nursing school on pell grants and scholarships. I’ve been an RN for 23 years.

Being a teen in the 90's, she was one of my crushes. I didn't understand english at that time, but it didn't prevent her voice to reach me.
What I have always loved about York's voice is that she always knows EDACTLY how much sir to usr for a given phrase and how to use that sir just right. I don't know many other pop singers who can float through a phrase like "my heart is sick of bring... (PAUSE)... changed", and stretch out the last word like she does without running out of breath entirely. Opera singers, sure, but not pop.
Tori.. and a large amount of family support and drugs got me though my divorce and exiting the Army. Really large amount of drugs...
She did a cover of Angie...from the Stones...so good
