when checking compression do your first test record the numbers, if low add ten drops oil to the cylinder and check again if the numbers go up it is rings, if it stays the same it is valves.
My old Dad loved his 36er, bought his Bug brand new in 1957 drove it until he died in 1976, unfortunately after his passing my Mum sold it to a friend, it had only about 70k miles. Wish I still had it, it was in nice condition, he'd never let me drive it when I was younger.
Help...I have a problem with the throttle cable .. I have a picture of what is happening. Wish I could attach it. The boot over the spring is catching on the spring causing the motor to race. Not sure what the problem is... Is it the throttle tube is sticking out to far causing the problem? Can't seem to find a photo of what it is suppose to look like.
I think after 35 some years those cylinders would be quite dry . I would have rolled plugs out & dumped some diesel fuel in there so it didn't dry start . Maybe even spin it over to get rings lubed up . That prolly would have helped it start as well as your compression readings .
im picking up a 40 horse from a 65 bug this weekend.its near complete just has a rotted muffler.going to eventually clean it up and do a cosmetic resto.wont use it on my 68 bug but will make a nice spare
Yea those are great. If you put the 1384 kit on it and put 1600 rockers they run close to 1500 stock. But without that they are super slow and dont climb hills. In a 68 stock with the 4.12 gears they dont pull very well but with the power up it will do better than you might think. With 3.88s they are a dog though.
yea it was tight. Still running on all 4 but that one is weak for sure. Might have rust on the valve and seat contact area that will get better over a bit more run time but for sure that one is the problem.
mike try dripping some oil in the cylinder and check compression again.if it goes up its the darn rings.if its not , its maybe the darn valves.since you got the motor out why not opening the heads and see whats wrong? any idea how is the case from the inside? like cam and crankshaft? maybe rusty? thats how mine was and its still like that cause i got no idea how to clean all the insides of the case without splitting the case (cam and crankshafs and bearings etc are at excellent condition). maybe a "flush" inside with oil?maybe fill the case with oil ,run it and then dump the oil?
runs on all 4 but that one is the weakest link. DId come up tight. So maybe after a bit more run time it would get better or maybe totally burn out. either way. but its a runner.

Bitchun 36. I put 146,000 miles on mine in my 58 ragtop after it sat 26 years before I got it. awesome!
they will run forever I think but they just dont get you there very fast.

Great motor. It will make great back up engine. Not bad for 64 years old. It runs better than I do! LOL. Great video

How was the crank play?

remove the heads and check for a burnt value on #4. fix as needed.

another oil change would probably be best to save engine seems like the longer it runs the better it runs
Just amazing that old engine would run at all, but instead it runs great for it's age.
Question on the compression numbers, when you check the compression, did you open the carburetor full throttle ?
usually that is a good idea but if you crank it long enough it will make up for that.

I have a 59 bug with the 36 hp, it runs great but it's leaking oil right at the pulley any ideas?
does it have end play
try to find a injection engine that runs like that after 35 years , after heavy use..
Wonder what the compression is on cylinder 4 now that you’ve ran it more.
Sounds good man, sounds like a good spare engine.

Did you make a video on resealing the engine on the white 67 bug?
yea just uploaded. however lost some footage on that.
is there much end float on the engine?
not too loose.
why do you work on the floor a table works much better and wont stress your knees
It is not the cam = # 4 shares lobes with #2 worn rings or stuck
